Abstract
Zeolite synthesis under acidic conditions has always presented a challenge. In this study, we successfully prepared series of ZSM-5 zeolite nanosheets (Z-5-SCA-X) over a broad pH range (4 to 13) without the need for additional supplements. This achievement was realized through aggregation crystallization of ZSM-5 zeolite subcrystal (Z-5-SC) with highly short-range ordering and ultrasmall size extracted from the synthetic system of ZSM-5 zeolite. Furthermore, the crystallization behavior of Z-5-SC was investigated, revealing its non-classical crystallization process under mildly alkaline and acidic conditions (pH<10), and the combination of classical and non-classical processes under strongly alkaline conditions (pH≥10). What's particularly intriguing is that, the silanol nest content in the resultant Z-5-SCA-X samples appears to be dependent on the pH values during the Z-5-SC crystallization process rather than its crystallinity. Finally, the results of the furfuryl alcohol etherification reaction demonstrate that reducing the concentration of silanol nests significantly enhances the catalytic performance of the Z-5-SCA-X zeolite. The ability to synthesize zeolite in neutral and acidic environments without the additional mineralizing agents not only broadens the current view of traditional zeolite synthesis but also provides a new approach to control the silanol nest content of zeolite catalysts.

Abstract
The reduction of CO2 is known to promote increased alkene yields from alkane dehydrogenations when the reactions are cocatalyzed. The mechanism of this promotion is not understood in the context of catalyst active-site environments because CO2 is amphoteric, and even general aspects of the chemistry, including the significance of competing side reactions, differ significantly across catalysts. Atomically dispersed chromium cations stabilized in highly siliceous MFI zeolite are shown here to enable the study of the role of parallel CO2 reduction during ethylene-selective ethane dehydrogenation. Based on infrared spectroscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy data interpreted through calculations using density functional theory (DFT), the synthesized catalyst contains atomically dispersed Cr cations stabilized by silanol nests in micropores. Reactor studies show that cofeeding CO2 increases stable ethylene-selective ethane dehydrogenation rates over a wide range of partial pressures. Operando X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectra indicate that during reaction at 650 °C the Cr cations maintain a nominal 2+ charge and a total Cr-O coordination number of approximately 2. However, CO2 reduction induces a change, correlated with the CO2 partial pressure, in the population of two distinct Cr-O scattering paths. This indicates that the promotional effect of parallel CO2 reduction can be attributed to a subtle change in Cr-O bond lengths in the local coordination environment of the active site. These insights are made possible by simultaneously fitting multiple EXAFS spectra recorded in different reaction conditions; this novel procedure is expected to be generally applicable for interpreting operando catalysis EXAFS data.

Abstract
Narrowly dispersed ultrafine Cu clusters of sizes smaller than 2.0 nm have been encapsulated in nanosized silicalite-1 zeolite through direct crystallization in the presence of Cu(en)22+ complex ions as the metal precursor. The growing silicalite-1 crystals are rich in vacancy defects and connectivity defects on the grain boundaries, where the terminating silanols promote the decomposition of Cu(en)22+, thus the deposition of ultrafine Cu species. The obtained composite material as a model catalyst is active for CO2 activation and hydrogenation to methanol. The preliminary in situ FTIR study recognizes a series of surface-adsorbed carbonyl, formyl, carbonate, and formate species when the material is exposed to CO2 and H2. Among others, the adsorbed formate decays most rapidly upon cofeeding CO2 and H2, implying that the most probable pathway toward methanol formation over this material is via the formate-mediated mechanism.

Abstract
This paper deals with the synthesis conditions-defect formation relationship in zeolites. Silicalite-1 (MFI-type) is used as a model material. Samples synthesized from a system with high basicity (at 100 °C), a system with moderate basicity (at 150 °C), and a fluoride-containing system in neutral medium (at 170 °C) are compared. Well-crystallized materials with sizes ≈0.1, 1-10, and 30-40 µm are obtained. The samples are analyzed by complementary methods providing information on the short- and long-range order in the zeolite framework. A strong correlation between the number of point defects in the zeolite framework and preparation conditions is established. Silicalite-1 synthesized under mild synthesis conditions from a highly basic system exhibits a larger number of framework defects and thus low hydrophobicity. Further, the calcined samples are subjected to aluminum and silicon incorporation by postsynthesis treatment. The Al/Si incorporation in the zeolite framework and its impact on the physicochemical properties is studied by XRD, TEM/SEM, solid-state NMR, FTIR, and thermogravimetric analyses. The defects healing as a function of the number of point defects in the initial material and zeolite crystal size is evaluated. The results of this study will serve for fine-tuning zeolite properties by in situ and postsynthesis methods.

Abstract
The preparation of defect-free MFI crystals containing single-site framework Mo through a hydrothermal postsynthesis treatment is reported. The insertion of single Mo sites in the MFI zeolite samples with different crystal sizes of 100, 200, and 2000 nm presenting a diverse concentration of silanol groups is revealed. The nature of the silanols and their role in the incorporation of Mo into the zeolite structure are elucidated through an extensive spectroscopic characterization (29Si NMR, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, and IR) combined with X-ray diffraction and HRTEM. In addition, a DFT-based theoretical modeling of a large Si154O354H92 nanoparticle containing 600 atoms is carried out to understand the expansion of the unit cell volume measured by X-ray diffraction. An accurate quantification of the silanols in the MFI crystals with different particle sizes and the insertion of Mo in the zeolitic framework is reported for the first time. The results confirmed that the non-H-bonded silanols seem to be the gateway for the insertion of single Mo atoms in the zeolite structure. Such materials with single metal sites present high crystallinity and perfect structure, thus providing great stability in catalytic applications.

Abstract
Zeolites have been game-changing materials in oil refining and petrochemistry over the last 60 years and have the potential to play the same role in the emerging processes of the energy and environmental transition. Although zeolites are crystalline inorganic solids, their structures are not perfect and the presence of defect sites - mainly Brønsted acid sites and silanols - influences their thermal and chemical resistance as well as their performances in key areas such as catalysis, gas and liquid separations and ion-exchange. In this paper, we review the type of defects in zeolites and the characterization techniques used for their identification and quantification with the focus on diffraction, spectroscopic and modeling approaches. More specifically, throughout the review, we will focus on silanol (Si-OH) defects located within the micropore structure and/or on the external surface of zeolites. The main approaches applied to engineer and heal defects and their consequences on the properties and applications of zeolites in catalysis and separation processes are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of silanol defect engineering in tuning the properties of zeolites to meet the requirements for specific applications are presented.

A series of ZnSnPt supported defective MFI zeolites with different SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (30, 110, 700, and ∞) and hydroxyl nests concentration were prepared and characterized by multiple techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen physisorption, NH3-TPD, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR). It was found that Brønsted acid sites (Si(OH)Al) with strong acid strength and the hydroxyl nests with weak acid strength coexisted over the defective ZSM-5 zeolites and ZnSnPt Lewis acid sites preferentially located on the hydroxyl nests. The increase in the concentration of hydroxyl nests and SiO2/Al2O3 ratios apparently improved the distribution of ZnSnPt Lewis acid sites. The hydroxyl nest incorporated ZnSnPt Lewis acid sites showed extraordinary dehydrogenation ability. Specially, operando dual beam Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (DB-FTIR) was applied to characterize the propane transformation under reaction conditions. At low SiO2/Al2O3 ratios, the propane efficiently transforms into propene and aromatics (total selectivity of 93.37%) by the cooperation of Brønsted acid sites and ZnSnPt Lewis acid sites. While at high SiO2/Al2O3 ratios, the propane mainly transforms into propene (selectivity of above 95%) and hydrogen. This study provides guidance for the preparation of highly efficient propane dehydrogenative transformation catalyst.

Operando Dual Beam FTIR Study of Hydroxyl Groups and Zn Species over Defective HZSM-5 Zeolite Supported Zinc Catalysts. Catalysts 2019. Abstract
A series of defective ZSM-5 zeolites (~300 nm, SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 55, 100, 480 and 950) were systematically studied by XRD, SEM, 29Si MAS NMR, argon physisorption, NH3-TPD and FT-IR technologies. The nature, the amount and the accessibility of the acid sites of defective ZSM-5 zeolites are greatly different from reported ZSM-5 zeolites with a perfect crystal structure. The Brønsted acid sites (Si(OH)Al) with strong acid strength and the Brønsted acid sites (hydroxyl nests) with weak acid strength co-existed over defective ZSM-5 zeolites, which leads to a unique catalytic function. Zn(C2H5)2 was grafted onto defective ZSM-5 zeolites through the chemical liquid deposition (CLD) method. Interestingly, FT-IR spectroscopic studies found that Zn(C2H5)2 was preferentially grafted on the hydroxyl nests with weak acid strength rather than the Si(OH)Al groups with strong acid strength over different defective ZSM-5 zeolites. In particular, home-built operando dual beam FTIR-MS was applied to study the catalytic performance of Zn species located in different sites of defective ZSM-5 zeolites under real n-hexane transformation conditions. Results show that Zn species grafted over hydroxyl nests obtain better dehydrogenative aromatization performance than Zn species over Si(OH)Al groups. This study provides guidance for the rational design of highly efficient alkane dehydrogenative aromatization catalysts.

Abstract
This review addresses the most relevant aspects of vibrational spectroscopies (IR, Raman and INS) applied to zeolites and zeotype materials. Surface Brønsted and Lewis acidity and surface basicity are treated in detail. The role of probe molecules and the relevance of tuning both the proton affinity and the steric hindrance of the probe to fully understand and map the complex site population present inside microporous materials are critically discussed. A detailed description of the methods needed to precisely determine the IR absorption coefficients is given, making IR a quantitative technique. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process that can be extracted from a variable-temperature IR study are described. Finally, cutting-edge space- and time-resolved experiments are reviewed. All aspects are discussed by reporting relevant examples. When available, the theoretical literature related to the reviewed experimental results is reported to support the interpretation of the vibrational spectra on an atomic level.

Abstract
Water and ethanol vapor adsorption phenomena are investigated systematically on a series of MFI-type zeolites: silicalite-1 samples synthesized via both alkaline (OH(-)) and fluoride (F(-)) routes, and ZSM-5 samples with different Si/Al ratios as well as different charge-balancing cations. Full isotherms (0.05-0.95 activity) over the range 25-55 °C are presented, and the lowest total water uptake ever reported in the literature is shown for silicalite-1 made via a fluoride-mediated route wherein internal silanol defects are significantly reduced. At a water activity level of 0.95 (35 °C), the total water uptake by silicalite-1 (F(-)) was found to be 0.263 mmol/g, which was only 12.6%, 9.8%, and 3.3% of the capacity for silicalite-1 (OH(-)), H-ZSM-5 (Si/Al:140), and H-ZSM-5 (Si/Al:15), respectively, under the same conditions. While water adsorption shows distinct isotherms for different MFI-type zeolites due to the difference in the concentration, distribution, and types of hydrophilic sites, the ethanol adsorption isotherms present relatively comparable results because of the overall organophilic nature of the zeolite framework. Due to the dramatic differences in the sorption behavior with the different sorbate-sorbent pairs, different models are applied to correlate and analyze the sorption isotherms. An adsorption potential theory was used to fit the water adsorption isotherms on all MFI-type zeolite adsorbents studied. The Langmuir model and Sircar's model are applied to describe ethanol adsorption on silicalite-1 and ZSM-5 samples, respectively. An ideal ethanol/water adsorption selectivity (α) was estimated for the fluoride-mediated silicalite-1. At 35 °C, α was estimated to be 36 for a 5 mol % ethanol solution in water increasing to 53 at an ethanol concentration of 1 mol %. The adsorption data demonstrate that silicalite-1 made via the fluoride-mediated route is a promising candidate for ethanol extraction from dilute ethanol-water solutions.

Abstract
We discuss herein selected examples of metal complexes of polyhedral oligosilses-quioxanes (POSSs) as models of single-site heterogeneous surface catalysts. The utility of these compounds as such models is illustrated when employed as analogues of single-site titanium species supported on a silica surface. Deep insights into structure–functionality relationships can be gained. In particular, it was possible to probe the relationship between accessibility of the reactive centre and turnover frequencies in a manner that is impossible for a purely heterogeneous catalyst. We also report that the partially dehydroxylated SiO

surface alone is an effective radical polymerization initiation catalyst. This surface reactivity is modelled by the solution reactions between the olefin substrate and two POSSs, the completely condensed triganol prism, Si

Similar reactivity discrimination is observed in the gas phase reactions of these POSSs with the olefin substrate, examined using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization- and collision-induced decomposition spectroscopies.
