Performance of Djallonké sheep under an extensive system of production in Faranah, Guinea

The health performance of imported Boer goat (Capra hircus) and their crosses with Woito-guji goat breeds in South Omo Zone, South-Western Ethiopia

Goat production in Ethiopia is constrained by various bottlenecks and low genetic performance of local breeds is among them. Southern Agricultural Research Institute had introduced Boer goats, for crossing, evaluate and distribute to users. This research was conducted to assess the survivability and productive and reproductive performance of Boers and its crosses, on animals managed in on-station, Jinka Research Center and Key-afer Goat Research Station from January 2011 to March 2014. The diseases affecting the imported flock were heart water, pyogenic infections/caseous lymphadenitis, and wart/orf diseases with crude mortality rate of 47.6% and case fatality rates of 40.7, 2.4, and 4.7%, respectively. Heart water was responsible for 85% of the overall deaths. The twining percentage of Boer goats was found to be 36.3%, which was by far superior to that of Woito-guji breeds. The mortality rate in 50% crosses was found to be 35.2%; 54.5 and 20.6% in Jinka and Key-afer, respectively. The survival rate of 50% cross kids was found to be associated with birth weight and location. The average birth weight and 1 month weight of 75% crosses was found to be 3.25 ± 0.43 and 7.12 ± 1.57 kg, respectively. The 75% crosses survival rate up to weaning was found to be 100%. Despite improvement in productive and reproductive performance through increased exotic blood level, the survivability was strangely questioned for pure and higher blood levels in South Omo Zone. Pure Boer and 75% crosses could better adapt and perform in intensive and semi-intensive production systems. Small holder and pastoral livestock production systems, like South Omo Zone area, should focus on managing 50 % cross sires and rearing 25% crosses for market.

Growth performances of Washera sheep under smallholder management systems in Yilmanadensa and Quarit districts, Ethiopia

A study was conducted to evaluate growth performances of Washera sheep under smallholder production systems in the Yilmanadensa and Quarit districts of the Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. Data were collected and analysed on the growth of 690 lambs owned by 110 households from October 2004 to September 2007. Weight (kilograms) of Washera lambs at birth, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age was 2.69 +/- 0.02, 7.10 +/- 0.16, 12.42 +/- 0.11, 16.12 +/- 0.91, 20.05 +/- 0.55 and 23.47 +/- 0.68, respectively. Birth weight was significantly (P < 0.05) affected by district, year of birth, parity of the dam, birth type and sex of lamb and by the interaction effect of parity by birth type and parity by sex of lamb. Weaning weight was also affected by year of birth, type of birth and sex of lamb. Yearling weight was affected by only year of birth and sex of birth. The average daily weight gain (ADG; grams) from birth to 30 days, birth to 90 days, 90 to 180 days and birth to 1 year of age was 143.37 +/- 13.46, 107.09 +/- 2.67, 39.78 +/- 9.73 and 60.13 +/- 1.89, respectively. Growth rates from birth to 30 and 90 days of age were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by birth year, birth type and sex. ADG from birth to 1 year of age was affected by lamb sex and district. The indigenous Washera sheep had faster growth rate than those sheep breeds of Ethiopia extensively studied thus far. Integrated efforts combining improved nutrition, health and participatory community-based breeding would help the smallholder farmers to utilise and conserve this immense sheep genetic resource of Ethiopia.

Lamb and kid mortality in village flocks in the coastal savanna zone of Ghana

A cohort study was designed to observe and follow up mortality in lambs and kids in 88 flocks of sheep and goats under the traditional production system in five villages within the coastal savanna zone of Ghana over a 2-year period. The overall mortality rates for kids and lambs were 30.8% and 33.5%, respectively. Significantly higher proportions of kids (80.2%) and lambs (75.6%) up to 3 months of age died compared to kids and lambs from 4 to 12 months of age. The differences in mortality rates, either between male and female kids and lambs or between single-born and multiple-birth kids and lambs, were not significant. The odds ratio (OR) and relative risks (RR) for lambs and kids, on the basis of sex and birth types, were not significant; neither were the values obtained for attributable risk, attributable fraction, population attributable risk and population attributable fraction. The overall mortality rate on the basis of species of animal was not significant. At the village level, significant differences in the proportions of mortality on the basis of sex were seen in two villages. At Akotokyir, more male lambs (54.2%) died compared to females (27.6%), while at Apewosika more female lambs (42.2%) died compared to males (16.7%). The only significant difference in mortality proportions on the basis of birth type at the village level was seen at Apewosika, where more single-born kids died (52.8%) compared to kids born with sibling(s) (28.4%). The significant ORs for mortalities were 3.10 for male lambs at Akotokyir, 3.35 for female lambs at Apewosika and 2.82 for single-born kids at Apewosika. The corresponding RRs were equally significant. On the basis of species, significantly more lambs died at Akotokyir (44.2%) and Kwesimprah (44.7%) compared to kids. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Risk factors for mortality associated with respiratory disease among Menz and Horro sheep in Ethiopia

A retrospective case-control study was conducted on 6718 sheep of two breeds (2772 Horro and 3946 Menz) on risk factors for mortality associated with respiratory disease (MARD) in Ethiopia, based on data collected between October 1993 and December 1997. Potential risk factors examined were breed, gender, age, month, and air temperatures.Fifty-four per cent of total deaths in the flock could be attributed to respiratory disease and the annual MARD rate ranged between 6.3 and 19.0%. There was significant breed (P<0.0001) and gender (P<0.0001) difference in MARD. The Horro breed had a higher (P<0.0001) annual MARD than the Menz breed (16.5+/-0.18 vs. 12.4+/-0.15%). A higher (P<0.0001) proportion of males suffered than females (15.1+/-0.23% vs. 13.8+/-0.13%). Age was also an important risk factor for MARD: there was a strong polynomial relationship (R(2)=0.91, P<0.0001) between MARD and age; the risk of being young if a sheep was a MARD case was high. MARD was high between October and March but relatively low between the months of April and September. There was a significant (P<0.05) negative cubic relationship (R(2)=0.49) between monthly MARD and monthly average minimum air temperatures. There was also a significant (P<0.01) positive exponential relationship (R(2)=0.61) between monthly MARD and average monthly daily deviation between maximum and minimum air temperatures. Timely health and management interventions focusing on these factors are necessary to alleviate losses from MARD. Understanding variations in MARD risk within a population can enhance early response to potential outbreaks, reducing losses.
