Comparison of fatty acid profile in plasma phospholipids in women from Granada (southern Spain) and Malmö (southern Sweden)

A critique of paradoxes in current advice on dietary lipids

Beliefs about credible hypotheses of dietary causes of disease still need well-defined mediators to test for logical proof or disproof. We know that food energy causes transient postprandial oxidative insults that may not be fully reversible. Also, eating vitamin-like 18-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in foods maintains the 20- and 22-carbon highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in tissues. Tissue HUFA form hormone-like mediators that each amplify transient postprandial insults into fatal inflammatory, thrombotic and arrhythmic events in cardiovascular disease, a major preventable cause of death. Similar diet-based amplified events may also occur in other inflammatory proliferative disorders including cancer, dementia, arthritis and asthma. Puzzling paradoxes come from fragmented views of this situation which convey incomplete knowledge in oversimplified messages. Tools now exist to demonstrate successful prevention of two fatal food imbalances with credible dietary preventive interventions, but organizers and financers to help gather the evidence remain unknown. The overall evidence accumulated about diet, disease and death may be nearing a paradigm shift in which prior observed facts remain while beliefs about their accepted interpretation change.

Compliance with the European and national nutritional objectives in a Mediterranean population

OBJECTIVE

To analyze compliance with the current European and Spanish nutritional objectives in a representative sample from Catalonia, a Spanish Mediterranean region; and to examine relationships between diet and plasma fatty acid composition.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional nutritional survey.

SETTING

Population based random sample derived from the Catalan Nutrition Survey.

SUBJECTS

A total of 516 healthy adult men (n=203) and women (n=313).

METHODS

Dietary habits were assessed by means of a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. A physical exam included height, weight, waist and hip circumferences, and a fasting blood draw.

RESULTS

Gender differences were observed in nutrient and energy intakes. Women showed a better compliance with the nutritional recommendations for monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) than did men. Men showed a better compliance for saturated fatty acid (SFA) and carbohydrate than did women. However, the SFA:MUFA:PUFA ratio was similar in both gender (1.6:2.3:1.0 for men; 1.7:2.5:1.0 for women). The highest compliance was observed for nutritional goals of sodium, calcium and fruit and vegetable intakes for both genders. In addition, the present study showed that levels of certain fatty acids in plasma are clearly associated with dietary intake of foods rich in these components. The highest correlations were found for n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids with blue fish intake in both men and women (r (men)=0.36 and r (women)=0.42; P<0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The diet followed in Catalonia seems to ensure compliance with most of the intermediate nutritional objectives for the Spanish population. However, a reduction in the SFA intake and an increase in the carbohydrate intake could be recommended in order to reduce the current prevalence of overweight and obesity in this Mediterranean region.

Dietary habits and plasma fatty acids levels in a population of Italian children: is there any relationship?

The relationships between dietary habits and the blood fatty acid (FA) profile have been poorly explored, particularly in children. Aim of the present investigation was to look at the associations between dietary habits and the plasma pattern of FA in a school-age population. In 105 healthy 8-years old children, the nutritional habits have been evaluated by means of a Food Frequency Questionnaire and a 24-h recall. FA analyses (expressed as FA%) were performed by means of capillary gas chromatography.

The children with high pasta and low red meat consumption (n = 9), compared to those with either medium or low pasta and either high or medium red meat consumption (n = 96), showed lower levels of total saturated (29% vs. 35%, P = 0.001) and higher levels of total monounsaturated (30% vs. 24%, P = 0.04) FA in plasma. They also showed lower levels of LDL cholesterol (90 vs. 109 mg/dl, P = 0.08) and fasting insulin (4.0 vs. 6.3 microU/ml, P = 0.04) in blood. A high consumption of pasta coupled with a low intake of red meat may be marker of a food behaviour and/or lifestyle associated with a more favourable pattern of circulating FA and hematochemical metabolic markers.
