Development of young children's understanding that the recent past is causally bound to the present

Age-related similarities and differences in networks of acute trauma-related stress symptoms in younger and older preschool children

BACKGROUND

Prior research on trauma-exposed preschool children has found various levels of trauma-related stress symptoms depending on age, which might be explained by developmental factors.

OBJECTIVE

This study uses network analysis to extend prior research and compare symptom presentation in younger and older preschoolers in the acute phase (first 4 weeks) following a potentially traumatic event.

METHOD

Parent-reported trauma-related acute stress symptoms were assessed using the Pediatric Emotional Distress Scale - Early Screener via www.kidtrauma.com. First, the overall symptom severity and symptom levels were compared between younger (1-3 years) and older (4-6 years) preschoolers. Further, two Gaussian graphical models of stress symptoms in younger (n = 242; M_age = 2.3 years; SD_age = 0.6 years) and older preschoolers (n = 299; M_age = 4.8 years; SD_age = 0.7 years) were modelled and compared.

RESULTS

Overall symptom severity did not differ between the groups. Symptom levels for developmental regression and avoidance of talking about the event were higher in older preschoolers. The network structures of the younger and the older preschoolers were largely similar. Highly central symptoms in both networks were trauma-unrelated fear and anger. The connections between fear of reminders and clinginess and trauma-unrelated fear and clinginess were stronger in the older preschoolers' network. The connections between worry and sadness and withdrawal; fear of reminders and creation of games, stories, and pictures; and whininess and clinginess were all stronger in the younger preschoolers' network.

CONCLUSIONS

Trauma-related stress symptomatology of younger and older preschoolers may not differ greatly in the acute phase. Trauma-unrelated fear and anger seem to be central symptoms in both groups. However, examining symptom-level associations across age groups revealed differential connections that might arise from developmental differences. If replicated in longitudinal and within-subject studies, these findings could help tailor interventions for trauma-exposed preschoolers in the acute phase.

The Development of Temporal Concepts: Linguistic Factors and Cognitive Processes

Temporal concepts are fundamental constructs of human cognition, but the trajectory of how these concepts emerge and develop is not clear. Evidence of children's temporal concept development comes from cognitive developmental and psycholinguistic studies. This paper reviews the linguistic factors (i.e., temporal language production and comprehension) and cognitive processes (i.e., temporal judgment and temporal reasoning) involved in children's temporal conceptualization. The relationship between children's ability to express time in language and the ability to reason about time, and the challenges and difficulties raised by the interaction between cognitive and linguistic components are discussed. Finally, we propose ways to reconcile controversies from different research perspectives and present several avenues for future research to better understand the development of temporal concepts.

Delayed self-recognition in children with autism spectrum disorder

This study aimed to investigate temporally extended self-awareness (awareness of one's place in and continued existence through time) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using the delayed self-recognition (DSR) paradigm (Povinelli et al., Child Development 67:1540-1554, 1996). Relative to age and verbal ability matched comparison children, children with ASD showed unattenuated performance on the DSR task, despite showing significant impairments in theory-of-mind task performance, and a reduced propensity to use personal pronouns to refer to themselves. The results may indicate intact temporally extended self-awareness in ASD. However, it may be that the DSR task is not an unambiguous measure of temporally extended self-awareness and it can be passed through strategies which do not require the possession of a temporally extended self-concept.

Young children's use of a delayed video representation to solve a retrieval problem pertaining to self

The experiments reported here were concerned with the development of delayed self-recognition. Children were videotaped playing a game and were marked covertly with a sticker on their forehead while doing so. The findings, of both a cross-sectional sample and a prospective longitudinal one, revealed that 3- but not 2.5-year-old children reached to remove this sticker reliably during video playback only after they had been trained to use the video to guide their search for an object that was not directly visible to the unaided eye. It appears that by 3 years of age children understand that their briefly delayed self video-representation is related to their present self. In contrast, while 2.5-year-olds can use delayed video information to locate objects in space that cannot be seen by the unaided eye, they cannot use this type of information to locate an object that pertains to a part of self that is not directly visible, such as a sticker on one's hair. The findings are discussed in terms of the emergence of an extended sense of self.

Three- to four-year-olds' recognition that symbols have a stable meaning: pictures are understood before written words

In 4 experiments 120 three- to four-year-old nonreaders were asked the identity of a symbolic representation as it appeared with different objects. Consistent with Bialystok (2000), many children judged the identity of written words to vary according to the object with which they appeared but few made such errors with recognizable pictures. Children also made few errors when the symbols were unrecognizable pictures. In Experiments 2 to 4 this pattern of responses was preserved in conditions that made it unlikely or impossible for children to answer correctly by taking the symbol to refer to one of the objects with which it appeared. Instead, correct answers required children to appreciate that the symbol had a generic, abstract meaning.
