The Role of Time Perspective and Mindfulness on Life Satisfaction in the United States of America, Spain, Poland and Japan: A Cross-Cultural Study

We assessed the cross-cultural role of Time Perspective (TP) tendencies [Past Positive (PP), Past Negative (PN), Present Hedonistic (PH), Present Fatalistic (PF), and Future (F)], the Deviation from a Balanced Time Perspective (DBTP) profile, the Deviation from a Negative Time Perspective (DNTP) profile, and mindfulness on life satisfaction (LS). The sample consisted of psychology undergraduate students (N= 867, MAGE= 20.19, SD= 3.417) in four countries: USA, Spain, Poland and Japan. We used a 17-item short version of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) in all countries. For ensuring measurement invariance, we conducted pairwise CFAs for the ZTPI-17, MAAS and SWLS. Regression analyses showed that PN predicted decreased LS in Poland and Japan. PP predicted increased LS in Spain. F predicted increased LS in Poland. DNTP predicted decreased LS in Poland. Mindfulness predicted decreased LS in Japan and increased LS in USA, Spain and Poland. Moreover, mediation analyses revealed that the DBTP partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and LS in Spain and USA. The DNTP partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and LS in Spain, Poland and Japan (opposite direction). The findings suggest that the association of TP, mindfulness and LS differs across the investigated countries as a function of culture.

Biases in Retrospective Perceptions of Changes in Well-Being Associated With Aging Attitudes

OBJECTIVES

Aging attitudes have important consequences on functioning in later life. A critical question concerns whether such attitudes may bias perceptions of one's own aging, with potentially negative effects on important outcomes.

METHODS

Using data from adults aged 30-85 years in Germany (n = 623), Hong Kong (n = 317), and the United States (n = 313), we examined the impact of age and aging attitudes on accuracy of perceptions of change in well-being over 5 years in different domains of functioning.

RESULTS

Across contexts, comparisons revealed good correspondence between retrospective reports and actual change. However, older adults and those with negative attitudes retrospectively reported less positive change over this period. Inconsistent with expectations, attitudes did not consistently bias accuracy of retrospective reports over cultures and domains of functioning, nor did age have a consistent moderating effect on the impact of attitudes on accuracy.

DISCUSSION

The results highlight the complex relationship between various personal characteristics and perceptions of change in well-being, as well as the potentially insidious effects of attitudes on the accuracy of these perceptions.

Estabilidade e mudança em medidas prospectivas de satisfação com a vida em idosos: Estudo Fibra

Resumo Objetivo Investigar a incidência e variáveis associadas à estabilidade e à mudança da satisfação com a vida (SV) em medidas de linha de base (LB) e seguimento (SG) realizadas a um intervalo de nove anos, em idosos recrutados na comunidade. Método Estudo longitudinal prospectivo com dados da LB (2008-2009) e do SG (2016-2017) do Estudo Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros, envolvendo 360 idosos com 71,7±5,0 anos na LB (68,9% mulheres). Foram calculadas associações entre variáveis sociodemográficas, indicadores objetivos e subjetivos de saúde e variáveis psicossociais em LB e a incidência de estabilidade e mudança em SV no SG. Resultados Nove anos depois da LB, foram observadas: maior incidência de estabilidade (61,1%) do que de piora (26,4%) ou melhora (12,5%) da SV; menor incidência de piora no grupo de 80 anos e mais do que no de 70 a 79; maior incidência de mudança do que estabilidade da SV entre os idosos com multimorbidades e com pontuação > 6 em sintomas depressivos; maior incidência de piora da SV entre os idosos com baixos níveis de autoavaliação de saúde (risco relativo; RR=2,26) e de satisfação com a memória (RR=2,33). Conclusões A incidência de estabilidade em SV em idosos foi mais frequente do que a de piora ou melhora. Indicadores subjetivos de saúde física e satisfação com a memória podem ser sinalizadores de deterioração em bem-estar no tempo e sintomas depressivos de instabilidade nas avaliações, possivelmente acompanhando a redução ou o aumento da SV. Foi observada considerável heterogeneidade nas manifestações de SV entre idosos.

Stability and change in prospective measures of life satisfaction in older adults: Fibra Study

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence and variables associated with stability and change in life satisfaction (LS) between baseline and 9-year follow-up, in community-dwelling-older adults. Method A prospective longitudinal study of baseline (BL; 2008-2009) and follow-up (FW; 2016-2017) data from the Frailty in Elderly Brazilians Study involving 360 individuals aged 71.7±5.0 years at BL, 68.9% women, was conducted. Associations of sociodemographic and psychosocial variables, and objective and subjective health indicators measured at BL with the incidence of stability and change in LS between BL and FW were investigated. Results Nine years after the BL collection, the following results were observed: higher incidence of stability (61.1%) than of worsening (26.4%) or improvement (12.5%) in LS; lower incidence of worsening of LS in the ≥80 age group than in the 70-79 years group; higher incidence of change than stability of LS among the participants with multimorbidities and scores > 6 for depressive symptoms; higher incidence of LS worsening among participants with low self-rated health (relative risk; RR=2.26) and low satisfaction with memory (RR=2.33). Conclusions The incidence of stability in LS was more frequent than that of worsening or improvement. Subjective indicators of physical health and satisfaction with memory may serve as indicators of deterioration in wellbeing over time and the presence of depressive symptoms may suggest instability in self-assessments, possibly accompanying a reduction or increase in LS over time. There was considerable heterogeneity in the manifestations of LS among the older adults assessed.

Depression and Life Satisfaction Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults: Mediation Effect of Functional Disability

With increasing age, middle-aged and older persons face a series of physical and mental health problems. This study aimed to explore the latent relationships among age, functional disability, depression, and life satisfaction. The data were obtained from the Wave 2 (in 2013–2014) and Wave 3 (in 2015–2016) surveys of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The analytic sample in the present study included 15,950 individuals aged 45 years and over. The participants answered the same questions concerning depression and life satisfaction in both study waves, and functional disability was measured based on the activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Age was directly associated with functional disability, life satisfaction, and depression. Functional disability was positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with life satisfaction. Functional disability strongly mediated the relationships among age, depression, and life satisfaction. Depression and life satisfaction were found to have enduring effects and effects on each other. Additionally, the model revealed a gender difference. Depression in middle-aged people should receive closer attention. Avoiding or improving functional disability may be an effective way to improve life satisfaction and reduce the level of depression in middle-aged and older persons. If prevention work successfully decreases depression, the life dissatisfaction of middle-aged and older people could be improved. Additionally, for the prevention of functional disability and depression and improvement in life satisfaction, gender differences need to be considered.

Cultural Differences in Susceptibility to the End of History Illusion

The End of History Illusion (EoHI) is the tendency to report that a greater amount of change occurred in the past than is predicted to occur in the future. We investigated if cultural differences exist in the magnitude of the EoHI for self-reported life satisfaction and personality traits. We found an effect of culture such that the difference between reported past and predicted future change was greater for U.S. Americans than Japanese, and that individual differences in two aspects of the self (self-esteem and self-concept clarity) mediated the link between culture and the magnitude of the EoHI. We also found a robust cultural difference in perceptions of past change; U.S. Americans tended to think about the past more negatively than their Japanese counterparts. These findings yield new insight onto the link between cultural context and the way people remember the past and imagine the future.

CONTEXT

Several intergovernmental organizations (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, World Health Organization, United Nations) are urging countries to use well-being indicators (e.g., life satisfaction) in addition to traditional economic indicators when making important policy decisions. As the number of governments implementing this new approach grows, so does the need to continue evaluating the health and well-being outcomes we might observe from policies aimed at improving life satisfaction.

METHODS

We evaluated whether positive change in life satisfaction (between t₀ ;2006/2008 and t₁ ;2010/2012) was associated with better outcomes on 35 indicators of physical, behavioral, and psychosocial health and well-being (in t₂ ;2014/2016). Data were from 12,998 participants in the University of Michigan's Health and Retirement Study-a prospective and nationally representative cohort of US adults over age 50.

FINDINGS

Participants with the highest (versus lowest) life satisfaction had better subsequent outcomes on some physical health indicators (lower risk of pain, physical functioning limitations, and mortality; lower number of chronic conditions; and higher self-rated health) and health behaviors (lower risk of sleep problems and more frequent physical activity), and nearly all psychosocial indicators (higher positive affect, optimism, purpose in life, mastery, health mastery, financial mastery, and likelihood of living with spouse/partner; and lower depression, depressive symptoms, hopelessness, negative affect, perceived constraints, and loneliness) over the 4-year follow-up period. However, life satisfaction was not subsequently associated with many specific health conditions (i.e., diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cancer, heart disease, lung disease, arthritis, overweight/obesity, or cognitive impairment), other health behaviors (i.e., binge drinking or smoking), or frequency of contact with children, family, or friends.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that life satisfaction is a valuable target for policies aiming to enhance several indicators of psychosocial well-being, health behaviors, and physical health outcomes.

Culture and well-being in late adulthood: Theory and evidence

Aging happens to everyone everywhere. At present, however, little is known about whether life-span adult development-and particularly development in late adulthood-is pancultural or culture-bound. Here, we propose that in Western cultural contexts, individuals are encouraged to maintain the active, positive, and independent self. This cultural expectation continues even in late adulthood, thus leading to a mismatch between aspirations to live up to the cultural expectation and the reality of aging. This mismatch is potentially alienating. In contrast, in Asian cultural contexts, a critical task throughout life is to achieve attunement with age-graded social roles. This ideal may be more attainable even in late adulthood. Our review of existent evidence lends support to this analysis. Specifically, in late adulthood, Americans showed a robust psychological bias toward high-arousal positive (vs. negative) emotions. This positivity, however, concealed a somber aspect of aging that manifested itself in more demanding realms of life. Thus, Americans in late adulthood also showed marked declines in certain desirable personality traits (e.g., extraversion and conscientiousness) and some aspects of the meaning in life (e.g., personal growth and purpose in life). None of these effects were apparent among East Asians. The current work underscores a need to extend research on life-span development beyond Western populations. Dissatisfaction with life and associated factors in older community-dwelling adults

Abstract Objective: To analyze the prevalence of dissatisfaction with life and associated sociodemographic factors. Method: A cross-sectional, population-based study was carried out. Data collection was performed using the Brazil Old Age Schedule (BOAS) questionnaire. A total of 573 older adults from the urban area were interviewed, selected through cluster sampling, stratified by sex. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square and prevalence ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI). For multivariate analysis, the Poisson Robust regression model was applied. Variables were entered into the model using the backward method. Results: The prevalence of dissatisfaction with life was 15.53%. Dissatisfaction with life was associated with women (PR=1.54; 95% CI: 1.02; 2.32), being illiterate (PR=2.57; 95% CI: 1.44; 4.60), having up to four years of schooling (PR=1.79; 95% CI: 1.01; 318) and having an income of less than two minimum wages (PR=3.29; 95% CI: 1.29; 8.42). In the multivariate analysis, being female (PR=1.50; 95% CI: 1.01; 2.25), being illiterate (PR=2.54; 95% CI: 1.42; 4.54) and having up to four years of schooling (PR=1.77; 95% CI: 0.99; 3.14) remained associated with dissatisfaction with life Conclusion: the prevalence of dissatisfaction is low. Dissatisfaction with life was associated with sex, education and income, in a bivariate manner. Sex and education were predictors of dissatisfaction with life. These findings reinforce the need for actions to promote social equality between men and women and to facilitate the access of older adults to education.

Perceived Trajectories of Past, Present, and Future Life Satisfaction of North Korean Defectors

This study compared perceived trajectories of life satisfaction (LS) between North Korean defectors' (NKDs') and the general South Korean population and examined psychosocial factors associated with future LS. Data were obtained from 300 NKDs residing in South Korea and 5089 South Koreans using self-questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. LS values from 5 years ago (3.46 vs. 6.18) and at present (5.30 vs. 5.91) were lower in NKDs than the control group, but the inverse was true for expected LS score in 5 years (7.82 vs. 6.87). NKDs' LS trajectory showed a more statistically positive trend than that of the control group. Among NKDs, subjective sense of loneliness and satisfaction with one's sense of autonomy were associated with expected future LS. NKDs experience higher life satisfaction and expect an optimistic future relative to the control group. Social policies and therapeutic approaches to loneliness and improving a sense of autonomy may be beneficial.
