Ordered nanoporous arrays of carbon supporting high dispersions of platinum nanoparticles

Sub-millisecond lithiothermal synthesis of graphitic meso-microporous carbon

Porous carbons with concurrently high specific surface area and electronic conductivity are desirable by virtue of their desirable electron and ion transport ability, but conventional preparing methods suffer from either low yield or inferior quality carbons. Here we developed a lithiothermal approach to bottom-up synthesize highly meso-microporous graphitized carbon (MGC). The preparation can be finished in a few milliseconds by the self-propagating reaction between polytetrafluoroethylene powder and molten lithium (Li) metal, during which instant ultra-high temperature (>3000 K) was produced. This instantaneous carbon vaporization and condensation at ultra-high temperatures and in ultra-short duration enable the MGC to show a highly graphitized and continuously cross-coupled open pore structure. MGC displays superior electrochemical capacitor performance of exceptional power capability and ultralong-term cyclability. The processes used to make this carbon are readily scalable to industrial levels.

Surface-Constrained Metropolis Monte Carlo: Simulation of Reactions on Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces

Triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) inspired by nature serve as a foundation for developing novel nanomaterials, such as templated silicas, graphene sponges, and schwarzites, with customizable optical, poroelastic, adsorptive, catalytic, and other properties. Computer simulations of reactions on TPMS using reactive intermolecular potentials hold great promise for constructing and screening potential TPMS with the desired properties. Here, we developed an off-lattice, surface-constrained Metropolis Monte Carlo (SC-MMC) algorithm that utilized a temperature quench process. The presented SC-MMC algorithm was used to investigate the process of graphitization reactions on the Schwarz primitive, Schwarz diamond, and Schoen gyroid TPMS, all with a cubic lattice parameter of 8 nm. We show that the optimized carbon TPMS exhibits a low energy, approximately -7.1 eV/atom, comparable to that of graphite and diamond crystals, along with a variety of topological defects. Furthermore, these structures showcase extensive and smooth surfaces characterized by a negative discrete Gaussian curvature, a distinctive feature indicative of an interconnected morphology. They possess specific surface areas of ∼2700 m2/g, comparable to graphene, and exhibit a significant porosity of around 90%. The theoretical X-ray correlation functions and nitrogen adsorption isotherms confirm that the constructed TPMS exhibit remarkably similar surface properties, although the pore space topology varies significantly.

Mesostructured Materials with Controllable Long-Range Orientational Ordering and Anisotropic Properties

Inorganic-organic mesophase materials provide a wide range of tunable properties, which are often highly dependent on their nano-, micro-, or meso-scale compositions and structures. Among these are macroscopic orientational order and corresponding anisotropic material properties, the adjustability of which are difficult to achieve. This is due to the complicated transient and coupled transport, chemical reaction, and surface processes that occur during material syntheses. By understanding such processes, general criteria are established and used to prepare diverse mesostructured materials with highly aligned channels with uniform nanometer dimensions and controllable directionalities over macroscopic dimensions and thicknesses. This is achieved by using a micropatterned semipermeable poly(dimethylsiloxane) stamp to manage the rates, directions, and surfaces at which self-assembling phases nucleate and the directions that they grow. This enables mesostructured surfactant-directed silica and titania composites, including with functional guest species, and mesoporous carbons to be prepared with high degrees of hexagonal order, as well as controllable orthogonal macroscopic orientational order. The resulting materials exhibit novel anisotropic properties, as demonstrated by the example of direction-dependent photocurrent generation, and are promising for enhancing the functionality of inorganic-organic nanocomposite materials in separations, catalysis, and energy conversion applications.

Insights into the CO2 Capture Characteristics within the Hierarchical Pores of Carbon Nanospheres Using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

Understanding adsorption processes at the molecular level has transformed the discovery of engineered materials for maximizing gas storage capacity and kinetics in adsorption-based carbon capture applications. In this work, we studied the molecular mechanism of gas (CO₂, H₂, methane, and ethane) adsorption inside an interconnected porous network of carbon. This was achieved by synthesizing novel macro-meso-microporous carbon (M³C) nanospheres with interconnected pore structures. The M³Cs showed a CO₂ capture capacity of 5.3 mmol/g at atmospheric CO₂ pressure, with excellent kinetics. This was due to fast CO₂ adsorption within the interconnected hierarchical macro-meso-microporous M³C. In situ small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) under various CO₂ pressures indicated that the macro- and mesopores of M³C enable fast diffusion of CO₂ molecules inside the micropores, where adsorbed CO₂ molecules densify into a liquid-like state. This strong densification of CO₂ molecules causes fast CO₂ diffusion in the macro- and mesopores of M³C, restarting the adsorption cycle for fresh CO₂ molecules until all pores are completely filled. Notably, M³C also showed good capture capacities for hydrogen and various hydrocarbons, with excellent selectivity toward ethane over methane.

Creating hierarchical pores in metal-organic frameworks via postsynthetic reactions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate promise for a multitude of applications owing to their high porosity and surface area. However, the majority of conventional MOFs possess only micropores with very limited accessibility to substances larger than 2 nm-especially functional biomacromolecules like some proteins. It is challenging to create an appropriately large pore size while avoiding framework collapse in MOFs. Herein, we present the generation of mesopores in microporous MOFs through three facile and effective techniques, namely Soxhlet washing, linker hydrolysis and linker thermolysis. These postsynthetic elimination approaches have been applied in selected MOFs, including PCN-250, PCN-160 and UiO-66, and controllably generate MOFs with hierarchical pores and high stability. Our work demonstrates reproducible and straightforward methods resulting in hierarchically porous materials that possess the benefits of mesoporosity while borrowing the robustness of a micropore framework. All the procedures can be conducted reliably at a multigram scale and operation time less than 6 h, representing a significant effort in the field of MOF synthesis. These hierarchically porous MOFs show great promise in a wide range of applications as efficient adsorbents, catalysts and drug carriers.

Design of the Synergistic Rectifying Interfaces in Mott-Schottky Catalysts

The functions of interfacial synergy in heterojunction catalysts are diverse and powerful, providing a route to solve many difficulties in energy conversion and organic synthesis. Among heterojunction-based catalysts, the Mott-Schottky catalysts composed of a metal-semiconductor heterojunction with predictable and designable interfacial synergy are rising stars of next-generation catalysts. We review the concept of Mott-Schottky catalysts and discuss their applications in various realms of catalysis. In particular, the design of a Mott-Schottky catalyst provides a feasible strategy to boost energy conversion and chemical synthesis processes, even allowing realization of novel catalytic functions such as enhanced redox activity, Lewis acid-base pairs, and electron donor-acceptor couples for dealing with the current problems in catalysis for energy conversion and storage. This review focuses on the synthesis, assembly, and characterization of Schottky heterojunctions for photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and organic synthesis. The proposed design principles, including the importance of constructing stable and clean interfaces, tuning work function differences, and preparing exposable interfacial structures for designing electronic interfaces, will provide a reference for the development of all heterojunction-type catalysts, electrodes, energy conversion/storage devices, and even super absorbers, which are currently topics of interest in fields such as electrocatalysis, fuel cells, CO₂ reduction, and wastewater treatment.

One-Pot Synthesis of Aminated Bimodal Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles as Silver-Embedded Antibacterial Nanocarriers and CO2 Capture Sorbents

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles have highly versatile structural properties that are suitable for a plethora of applications including catalysis, separation, and nanotherapeutics. We report a one-pot synthesis strategy that generates bimodal mesoporous silica nanoparticles via coassembly of a structure-directing Gemini surfactant (C_16-3-16) with a tetraethoxysilane/(3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane-derived sol additive. Synthesis temperature enables control of the nanoparticle shape, structure, and mesopore architecture. Variations of the aminosilane/alkylsilane molar ratio further enable programmable adjustments of hollow to core-shell and dense nanoparticle morphologies, bimodal pore sizes, and surface chemistries. The resulting Gemini-directed aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles have excellent carbon dioxide adsorption capacities and antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli. Our results provide an enhanced understanding of the structure formation of multiscale mesoporous inorganic materials that are desirable for numerous applications such as carbon sequestration, water remediation, and biomedical-related applications.

A simple synthesis of surfactant-free polycrystalline CuO nanoparticles supported on carbon nanofibers for regioselective hydroboration of alkynes

Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) with a clean surface supported on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in one-pot were prepared by simple solid-state grinding and aging followed by thermal treatment, yielding CuO nanoparticles with high (23.8 wt%) and uniform CuO loading in the absence of surfactants and solvent. The CuO NPs on CNFs (CuO/CNF) showed excellent catalytic activity in transforming a wide variety of alkynes into alkenyl boronates using B2Pin2 as a boron source in the absence of ligand and additives with high regioselectivity under mild conditions. Moreover, the present CuO/CNF catalyst was recyclable and possesses excellent chemoselectivity. The developed green synthetic approach is expected to offer exciting opportunities for designing monometallic or bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts on different supports applied in heterogeneous catalysis.

Solid-solid synthesis of covalent organic framework as a support for growth of controllable ultrafine Au nanoparticles

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising supports for the synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles (NM NPs) with controllable sizes and dispersities. However, it is still challenging to synthesize COFs using green and efficient routes. Herein, COFs (TpMA) were prepared by ball milling, which required less solvent and time. They were then used as a support for the growth of ultrafine Au NPs. Using the COFs as supports, five size-controlled ultrafine Au NPs (2.5 ± 0.55- 4.32 ± 1.39 nm) were synthesized (Au@TpMA). It was found that the Au NPs exhibited remarkable dispersibility owing to the support of TpMA. The reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol was used as a model reaction to evaluate the performance of the Au@TpMA catalyst, which showed excellent catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The Au@TpMA catalyst exhibited good stability and recyclability, and the reduction rate was 95% at the end of six successive experiments. In addition, in the presence of the Au@TpMA catalyst, the maximum pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 4-nitrophenol was 0.2379 min^-1. From the results of this study, we hope that using COFs-based supports prepared by ball milling for the size-controlled synthesis of NM NPs provides a path forward for the mechanical synthesis of other COFs.

Equilibrium, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Studies on Adsorption of Rhodamine B from Aqueous Solutions Using Oxidized Mesoporous Carbons

Oxidized mesoporous carbon C_SBA-15, obtained by the hard method, was applied to remove rhodamine B from the aqueous system. The process of carbon oxidation was performed using 0.5 and 5 M of nitric (V) acid solution at 70 and 100 °C. Functionalization of mesoporous carbon with HNO₃ solutions led to reduction in the surface area, pore volume, and micropore area, however, it also led to an increased number of oxygen functional groups of acidic character. The functional groups probably are located at the entrance of micropores, in this way, reducing the values of textural parameters. Isotherms of rhodamine B adsorption indicate that the oxidation of mesoporous carbons resulted in an increase in the effectiveness of the removal of this dye from aqueous solutions. The influence of temperature, pH, and contact time of mesoporous material/rhodamine B on the effectiveness of dye removal was tested. The process of dye adsorption on the surfaces of the materials studied was established to be most effective at pH 12 and at 60 °C. Kinetic studies of the process of adsorption proved that the equilibrium state between the dye molecules and mesoporous carbon materials is reached after about 1 h. The adsorption kinetics were well fitted using a pseudo-second-order model. The most effective in rhodamine B removal was the sample C_SBA-15-5-100, containing the greatest number of oxygen functional groups of acidic character. The Langmuir model best represented equilibrium data.

Solid-State Reaction Synthesis of Nanoscale Materials: Strategies and Applications

Nanomaterials (NMs) with unique structures and compositions can give rise to exotic physicochemical properties and applications. Despite the advancement in solution-based methods, scalable access to a wide range of crystal phases and intricate compositions is still challenging. Solid-state reaction (SSR) syntheses have high potential owing to their flexibility toward multielemental phases under feasibly high temperatures and solvent-free conditions as well as their scalability and simplicity. Controlling the nanoscale features through SSRs demands a strategic nanospace-confinement approach due to the risk of heat-induced reshaping and sintering. Here, we describe advanced SSR strategies for NM synthesis, focusing on mechanistic insights, novel nanoscale phenomena, and underlying principles using a series of examples under different categories. After introducing the history of classical SSRs, key theories, and definitions central to the topic, we categorize various modern SSR strategies based on the surrounding solid-state media used for nanostructure growth, conversion, and migration under nanospace or dimensional confinement. This comprehensive review will advance the quest for new materials design, synthesis, and applications.

Towards cheaper light-harvesting systems: Using earth-abundant metal oxide nanoparticles in self assembled peptide-porphyrin nanofibers

Cheap artificial light harvesting systems, which competently harvest solar energy and promote efficient energy transfer, are highly sought after in the renewable sector. We report the synthesis of self-assembled peptide-porphyrin fibers (SJ 6) fabricated with iron (III) oxide (Fe₃ O₄ ) nanoparticles as feasible electron acceptors. Charge-complementarity between the negatively charged peptide (20E) and the protonated Zn-tetraphenyl porphyrin (ZnTPyP) led to an ordered assembly of the ZnTPyP molecules, enabling efficient light harvesting. X-ray diffraction data indicates a more ordered structure in SJ 6 compared to 20E and ZnTPyP. The incorporation of Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles into SJ 6 showed significant fluorescence quenching, indicating efficient electron flow from the donor to the acceptor. The SJ 6-nFe₃ O₄ system performed the light reaction of photosynthesis as confirmed by the reduction of 1 mM NAD⁺ to 0.180 mM NADH upon exposure to visible light (Xe lamp λ > 420 nm) for 1 h. The photochemical regeneration of NADH using the SJ 6-nFe₃ O₄ system was coupled to glutamate dehydrogenase-catalyzed conversion of α-ketoglutarate to L-glutamate. These results confirm the successful synthesis of an artificial light harvesting peptide-porphyrin system with Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles as promising low-cost electron separators.

Colloidal Polydopamine Beads: A Photothermally Active Support for Noble Metal Nanocatalysts

Polydopamine (PDA) is a unique bioinspired synthetic polymer that integrates broadband light absorption, efficient photothermal transduction, and versatile surface-adhesion functions in a single material entity. Here, we utilize colloidal PDA beads in the submicron particle size regime as an easily processable and photothermally active support for sub-10 nm Pd nanocatalysts to construct a multifunctional material system that allows us to kinetically boost thermal catalytic reactions through visible and near-infrared light illuminations. Choosing the Pd-catalyzed nitrophenol reduction by ammonium formate as a model transfer hydrogenation reaction exhibiting temperature-dependent reaction rates, we demonstrate that interfacial molecule-transforming processes on metal nanocatalyst surfaces can be kinetically modulated by harnessing the thermal energy produced through photothermal transduction in the PDA supports.

Metal Embedded Porous Carbon for Efficient CO2 Cycloaddition under Mild Conditions

Nitrogen-doped porous carbon material was generated via thermal pyrolysis of zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs). The structure of the ZIF templates was tuned, so that the obtained product was an N-doped porous carbon-containing encapsulated metal nanoparticle. The hierarchical structural and unique properties of pyrolyzed materials are involved in further application, including catalysis. The as-synthesized porous carbon materials were applied as a catalyst for CO2 fixation on cyclic carbonates under near ambient pressure without solvent and co-catalyst. The zinc dispersion in highly porous carbon material, deriving from ZIF-8, exhibited a superior catalytic performance among the synthesized materials. The acid sites (Zn species) and the incorporated basic sites (N-species) present in the porous carbon material are essential for a high affinity for gas adsorption and CO2 conversion. Additionally, the catalyst was found to be very robust and stable during recycling studies as the catalytic performance remained high for seven cycles.

Electrocatalysis in Alkaline Media and Alkaline Membrane-Based Energy Technologies

Hydrogen energy-based electrochemical energy conversion technologies offer the promise of enabling a transition of the global energy landscape from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Here, we present a comprehensive review of the fundamentals of electrocatalysis in alkaline media and applications in alkaline-based energy technologies, particularly alkaline fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Anion exchange (alkaline) membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) enable the use of nonprecious electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), relative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which require Pt-based electrocatalysts. However, the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) kinetics is significantly slower in alkaline media than in acidic media. Understanding these phenomena requires applying theoretical and experimental methods to unravel molecular-level thermodynamics and kinetics of hydrogen and oxygen electrocatalysis and, particularly, the proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process that takes place in a proton-deficient alkaline media. Extensive electrochemical and spectroscopic studies, on single-crystal Pt and metal oxides, have contributed to the development of activity descriptors, as well as the identification of the nature of active sites, and the rate-determining steps of the HOR and ORR. Among these, the structure and reactivity of interfacial water serve as key potential and pH-dependent kinetic factors that are helping elucidate the origins of the HOR and ORR activity differences in acids and bases. Additionally, deliberately modulating and controlling catalyst-support interactions have provided valuable insights for enhancing catalyst accessibility and durability during operation. The design and synthesis of highly conductive and durable alkaline membranes/ionomers have enabled AEMFCs to reach initial performance metrics equal to or higher than those of PEMFCs. We emphasize the importance of using membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) to integrate the often separately pursued/optimized electrocatalyst/support and membranes/ionomer components. Operando/in situ methods, at multiscales, and ab initio simulations provide a mechanistic understanding of electron, ion, and mass transport at catalyst/ionomer/membrane interfaces and the necessary guidance to achieve fuel cell operation in air over thousands of hours. We hope that this Review will serve as a roadmap for advancing the scientific understanding of the fundamental factors governing electrochemical energy conversion in alkaline media with the ultimate goal of achieving ultralow Pt or precious-metal-free high-performance and durable alkaline fuel cells and related technologies.

Imidazolium ionic Liquid-Regulated Sub-5-nm Pt(111) with a stable configuration anchored on hollow carbon nanoshells for efficient oxygen reduction

Here, N-doped hollow carbon sphere (NHCS)-supported (111)-plane-engineered sub-5-nm Pt (Pt-NHCS) catalysts regulated precisely by imidazolium ionic liquids were synthesized successfully and used to catalyze oxygen reduction. The (111)-plane engineered Pt nanocrystals with a diameter of 4.5 ± 0.5 nm were homogeneously deposited on the 3-dimensional spherical nanoshells. The resulting Pt nanocrystals anchored on the carbon skeleton exhibit a stable configuration in both alkaline and acid electrolytes with the help of imidazolium cations and pyrolysis. Among all as-prepared catalysts, the optimized Pt-NHCS shows remarkable long-term durability. Specifically, Pt-NHCS maintains 95.3% of the original current density after 10,000 potential cycles, while Pt/C benchmarks exhibit a retention of 78.5%. Accelerated durability test results indicate that Pt-NHCS exhibits a high efficiency of 96 % in comparison with initial current density, while a value of 86% for Pt/C. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that reactive Pt(111) planes with well-defined Schottky defects and vacancies adsorb and activate oxygen molecule rapidly while desorbing the reaction intermediates.

Scalable Sacrificial Templating to Increase Porosity and Platinum Utilisation in Graphene-Based Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell Electrodes

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells hold great promise for a range of applications but require advances in durability for widespread commercial uptake. Corrosion of the carbon support is one of the main degradation pathways; hence, corrosion-resilient graphene has been widely suggested as an alternative to traditional carbon black. However, the performance of bulk graphene-based electrodes is typically lower than that of commercial carbon black due to their stacking effects. This article reports a simple, scalable and non-destructive method through which the pore structure and platinum utilisation of graphene-based membrane electrode assemblies can be significantly improved. Urea is incorporated into the catalyst ink before deposition, and is then simply removed from the catalyst layer after spraying by submerging the electrode in water. This additive hinders graphene restacking and increases porosity, resulting in a significant increase in Pt utilisation and current density. This technique does not require harsh template etching and it represents a pathway to significantly improve graphene-based electrodes by introducing hierarchical porosity using scalable liquid processes.

Lamellar carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites with macroscopic orientation

Novel preparative approaches towards lamellar nanocomposites of carbon and inorganic materials are relevant for a broad range of technological applications. Here, we describe how to utilize the co-assembly of a liquid-crystalline hexaphenylene amphiphile and an aluminosilicate precursor to prepare carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites with controlled lamellar orientation and macroscopic order. To this end, the shear-induced alignment of a precursor phase of the two components resulted in thin films comprising lamellae with periodicities on the order of the molecular length scale, an "edge-on" orientation relative to the substrate and parallel to the shearing direction with order on the centimeter length scale. The lamellar structure, orientation, and macroscopic alignment were preserved in the subsequent pyrolysis that yielded the corresponding carbon-aluminosilicate nanocomposites.

Immobilization of Pt nanoparticles on hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile-based nanofiber paper

The electrochemical activity of catalysts strongly depends on the uniform distribution of monodisperse Pt nanoparticles without aggregates. Here, we propose a new hydrolysis-assisted smearing method for Pt loading on a free-standing paper-type electrode. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based nanofiber paper was used as the electrode, and it acted as a Pt support. Hydrolysis of the electrode tripled the number of active nucleation sites for Pt adsorption on the PAN nanofibers, thereby significantly enhancing the wettability of the nanofibers. This facilitated the uniform distribution of Pt nanoparticles without aggregate formation up to 40 wt% (about 0.8 mg/cm²) with a particle size of about 3 nm. The catalytic current of the hydrolyzed Pt electrode in CH₃OH/H₂SO₄ solution exceeded 213 mA/cm² Pt mg, which was considerably greater than the current was 148 mA/cm² Pt mg for an unhydrolyzed electrode.

Electrolysis on a Chip with Tunable Thin Film Nanostructured PGM Electrocatalysts Generated from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer Templates

Self-assembled block copolymers are promising templates for fabricating thin film materials with tuned periodic feature sizes and geometry at the nanoscale. Here, a series of nanostructured platinum and iridium oxide electrocatalysts templated from poly(styrene)-block-poly(vinyl pyridine) (PSbPVP) block copolymers via an incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) pathway is reported. Both nanowire and nanocylinder electrocatalysts of varying feature sizes are assessed and higher catalyst loadings are achieved by the alkylation of the pyridine moieties in the PVP block prior to IWI. Electrocatalyst evaluations featuring hydrogen pump and water electrolysis demonstrations are carried out on interdigitated electrode (IDE) chips flexible with liquid supporting electrolytes and thin film polymer electrolytes. Notably, the mass activities of the nanostructured electrocatalysts from alkylated block copolymer templates are 35%-94% higher than electrocatalysts from non-alkylated block copolymer templates. Standing cylinder nanostructures lead to higher mass activities than lamellar variants despite their not having the largest surface area per unit catalyst loading demonstrating that mesostructure architectures have a profound impact on reactivity. Overall, IDE chips with model thin film electrocatalysts prepared from self-assembled block copolymers offer a high-throughput experimental method for correlating electrocatalyst nanostructure and composition to electrochemical reactivity.

Revealing the Structure Evolution of Heterogeneous Pd Catalyst in Suzuki Reaction via the Identical Location Transmission Electron Microscopy

The mechanism of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions has been the subject of intense debate since the recognition of catalytic active sites involving a wide array of dynamic changed Pd species. Here, through the combination of the hot filtration experiment together with the recently developed identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) method, the delicate structure evolution of highly dispersed Pd NPs supported on oxygen-functionalized carbon nanotubes (Pd/oCNTs) as well as the kinetics properties of derived dissolved species in liquid phase were systemically investigated in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The result indicates that the leached Pd components caused by the strong adsorption of reactants might have a significant contribution to the coupling products, and the degree for different substrates follows the order of iodobenzene > phenylboronic acid > bromobenzene. Meanwhile, the typical three sequential behaviors of supported Pd NPs, including dissolution, deposition, and growth, along with the increase of the conversion throughout the reaction were spatiotemporally observed by tracking the evolution of individually identifiable NPs. The performed work not only provides direct evidence for the interaction between Pd NPs surface with reactants on atomic scale but also gives a valuable reference for fundamentally understanding the mechanism of the heterogeneous Pd-catalyzed Suzuki coupling process as well as rational design of next-generation catalysts with high efficiency and reusability for synthetic applications.

Flexible reusable hierarchical hybrid catalyst for rapid and complete degradation of triclosan in water

A flexible, durable, and reusable nanocatalyst system was fabricated by anchoring palladium nanoparticles on carbon nanotube (CNT) carpets covalently attached to carbon cloth. These hierarchical hybrid materials were tested for catalytic degradation of triclosan (TCS), an emerging contaminant. Materials were characterized using scanning & transmission electron microscopy techniques (SEM and TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The reaction kinetics was studied using HPLC and reaction pathways proposed based on LC-MS/GC-MS analyses. In the presence of hydrogen, complete step-wise chlorine removal was seen until complete dechlorination was accomplished. The pseudo-first-order rate constant was measured to be orders of magnitude higher than earlier reported values. Moreover, the same material was usable for multiple cycles in flowing water. This study demonstrates that robustness and reusability of larger structural materials can be combined with the ultra-high surface activity of nanocatalysts to provide practical and eco-friendly solutions for water sustainability.

Zinc-Coordination Polymer-Derived Porous Carbon-Supported Stable PtM Electrocatalysts for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Porous carbon (PC) is obtained by carbonizing a zinc-coordination polymer (MOF-5) at 950 °C and PtM (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) nanoparticles (NPs), which are deposited on PC using the polyol method. Structural and morphological characterizations of the synthesized materials are carried out by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and the porosity was determined using a N2 adsorption/desorption technique. The results revealed that PtM NPs are alloyed in the fcc phase and are well dispersed on the surface of PC. The electrochemical results show that PtM/PC 950 catalysts have higher methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) performances than commercial Pt/C (20%) catalysts. After 3000 s of chronoamperometry (CA) test, the MOR performances decreased in the order of Pt1Cu1/PC 950 > Pt1Ni1/PC 950 > Pt1Fe1/PC 950 > Pt1Zn1/PC 950 > Pt1Co1/PC 950. The high MOR activities of the synthesized catalysts are attributed to the effect of M on methanol dissociative chemisorption and improved tolerance of Pt against CO poisoning. The high specific surface area and porosity of the carbon support have an additional effect in boosting the MOR activities. Screening of the first row transition metals (d 5+n , n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) alloyed with Pt binary catalysts for MOR shows that Pt with d 8 (Ni) and d 9 (Cu) transition metals, in equivalent atomic ratios, are good anode catalysts for alcohol fuel cells.

Hetero-Porous, High-Surface Area Green Carbon Aerogels for the Next-Generation Energy Storage Applications

Various carbon materials have been developed for energy storage applications to address the increasing energy demand in the world. However, the environmentally friendly, renewable, and nontoxic bio-based carbon resources have not been extensively investigated towards high-performance energy storage materials. Here, we report an anisotropic, hetero-porous, high-surface area carbon aerogel prepared from renewable resources achieving an excellent electrical double-layer capacitance. Two different green, abundant, and carbon-rich lignins which can be extracted from various biomasses, have been selected as raw materials, i.e., kraft and soda lignins, resulting in clearly distinct physical, structural as well as electrochemical characteristics of the carbon aerogels after carbonization. The obtained green carbon aerogel based on kraft lignin not only demonstrates a competitive specific capacitance as high as 163 F g⁻¹ and energy density of 5.67 Wh kg⁻¹ at a power density of 50 W kg⁻¹ when assembled as a two-electrode symmetric supercapacitor, but also shows outstanding compressive mechanical properties. This reveals the great potential of the carbon aerogels developed in this study for the next-generation energy storage applications requiring green and renewable resources, lightweight, robust storage ability, and reliable mechanical integrity.

Low-PGM and PGM-Free Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells: Stability Challenges and Material Solutions

Fuel cells as an attractive clean energy technology have recently regained popularity in academia, government, and industry. In a mainstream proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell, platinum-group-metal (PGM)-based catalysts account for ≈50% of the projected total cost for large-scale production. To lower the cost, two materials-based strategies have been pursued: 1) to decrease PGM catalyst usage (so-called low-PGM catalysts), and 2) to develop alternative PGM-free catalysts. Grand stability challenges exist when PGM catalyst loading is decreased in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA)-the power generation unit of a PEM fuel cell-or when PGM-free catalysts are integrated into an MEA. More importantly, there is a significant knowledge gap between materials innovation and device integration. For example, high-performance electrocatalysts usually demonstrate undesired quick degradation in MEAs. This issue significantly limits the development of PEM fuel cells. Herein, recent progress in understanding the degradation of low-PGM and PGM-free catalysts in fuel cell MEAs and materials-based solutions to address these issues are reviewed. The key factors that degrade the MEA performance are highlighted. Innovative, emerging material concepts and development of low-PGM and PGM-free catalysts are discussed.

Mesoporous Carbon Fibers with Tunable Mesoporosity for Electrode Materials in Energy Devices

To improve the properties of mesoporous carbon (MC), used as a catalyst support within electrodes, MC fibers (MCFs) were successfully synthesized by combining organic–organic self-assembly and electrospinning deposition and optimizing heat treatment conditions. The pore structure was controlled by varying the experimental conditions. Among MCFs, MCF-A, which was made in the most acidic condition, resulted in the largest pore diameter (4–5 nm), and the porous structure and carbonization degree were further optimized by adjusting heat treatment conditions. Then, since the fiber structure is expected to have an advantage when MCFs are applied to devices, MCF-A layers were prepared by spray printing. For the resistance to compression, MCF-A layers showed higher resistance (5.5% change in thickness) than the bulk MC layer (12.8% change in thickness). The through-plane resistance was lower when the fiber structure remained more within the thin layer, for example, +8 mΩ for 450 rpm milled MCF-A and +12 mΩ for 800 rpm milled MCF-A against the gas diffusion layer (GDL) 25BC carbon paper without a carbon layer coating. The additional advantages of MCF-A compared with bulk MC demonstrate that MCF-A has the potential to be used as a catalyst support within electrodes in energy devices.
