Detection and imaging of atmospheric radio flashes from cosmic ray air showers

Demonstrating Agreement between Radio and Fluorescence Measurements of the Depth of Maximum of Extensive Air Showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array. With this, we show that the radio technique is capable of cosmic-ray mass composition studies, both at Auger and at other experiments.

Progress in the Simulation and Modelling of Coherent Radio Pulses from Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Particles

In the last decade, many experiments have been planned, designed or constructed to detect Ultra High Energy showers produced by cosmic rays or neutrinos using the radio technique. This technique consists in detecting short radio pulses emitted by the showers. When the detected wavelengths are longer than typical shower length scales, the pulses are coherent. Radio emission can be simulated by adding up the contributions of all the particle showers in a coherent way. The first program to use this approach was based on an algorithm developed more than thirty years ago and referred to as “ZHS”. Since then, much progress has been obtained using the ZHS algorithm with different simulation programs to investigate pulses from showers in dense homogeneous media and the atmosphere, applying it to different experimental initiatives, and developing extensions to address different emission mechanisms or special circumstances. We here review this work, primarily led by the authors in collaboration with other scientists, illustrating the connections between different articles, and giving a pedagogical approach to most of the work.

Wideband Dual-Polarized VHF Antenna for Space Observation Applications

This work presents the design for an antenna element that can be used in radio arrays for the monitoring and detecting of radio emissions from cosmic particles’ interactions in the atmosphere. For these applications, the pattern stability over frequency is the primary design goal. The proposed antenna has a high gain over a relative bandwidth of 88%, a beamwidth of 2.13 steradians, a small group delay variation and a very stable radiation pattern across the frequency bandwidth of 110 to 190 MHz. It is dual polarized and has a simple mechanical structure which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture. The measurements show that the ground has insignificant impact on the overall radiation pattern.

Radio Emission Reveals Inner Meter-Scale Structure of Negative Lightning Leader Steps

We use the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) to probe the dynamics of the stepping process of negatively charged plasma channels (negative leaders) in a lightning discharge. We observe that at each step of a leader, multiple pulses of vhf (30-80 MHz) radiation are emitted in short-duration bursts (<10  μs). This is evidence for streamer formation during corona flashes that occur with each leader step, which has not been observed before in natural lightning and it could help explain x-ray emission from lightning leaders, as x rays from laboratory leaders tend to be associated with corona flashes. Surprisingly, we find that the stepping length is very similar to what was observed near the ground, however with a stepping time that is considerably larger, which as yet is not understood. These results will help to improve lightning propagation models, and eventually lightning protection models.

Observation of Radar Echoes from High-Energy Particle Cascades

We report the observation of radar echoes from the ionization trails of high-energy particle cascades. Data were taken at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, where the full electron beam (∼10^{9}  e^{-} at ∼10  GeV/e^{-}) was directed into a plastic target to simulate an ultrahigh-energy neutrino interaction. The target was interrogated with radio waves, and coherent radio reflections from the cascades were detected with properties consistent with theoretical expectations. This is the first definitive observation of radar echoes from high-energy particle cascades, which may lead to a viable neutrino detection technology for energies ≳10^{16}  eV.

Air Shower Detection by Arrays of Radio Antennas

Antenna arrays are beginning to make important contributions to high energy astroparticle physics supported by recent progress in the radio technique for air showers. This article provides an update to my more extensive review published in Prog. Part. Nucl. Phys. 93 (2017) 1. It focuses on current and planned radio arrays for atmospheric particle cascades, and briefly references to a number of evolving prototype experiments in other media, such as ice. While becoming a standard technique for cosmic-ray nuclei today, in future radio detection may drive the field for all type of primary messengers at PeV and EeV energies, including photons and neutrinos. In cosmic-ray physics accuracy becomes increasingly important in addition to high statistics. Various antenna arrays have demonstrated that they can compete in accuracy for the arrival direction, energy and position of the shower maximum with traditional techniques. The combination of antennas and particles detectors in one array is a straightforward way to push the total accuracy for high-energy cosmic rays for low additional cost. In particular the combination of radio and muon detectors will not only enhance the accuracy for the cosmic-ray mass composition, but also increase the gamma-hadron separation and facilitate the search for PeV and EeV photons. Finally, the radio technique can be scaled to large areas providing the huge apertures needed for ultra-high-energy neutrino astronomy.

Radio detection in the multi-messenger context

The present work discusses the development of the radio technique for detection of ultra-high energy air-showers induced by cosmic radiation, and the prospects of its application in the future multi-messenger activities, particularly for detection of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, gamma rays and neutrinos. It gives an overview of the results achieved by the modern digital radio arrays, as well as discuss present challenges and future prospects.

Radio detection of extensive air showers

Radio detection of extensive air showers is a flourish technique, attracting more and more interest to investigate the properties of high-energy cosmic rays. Past, present, and future developments are reviewed.

Summary of the main results of the KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande experiments

The KASCADE and KASCADE-Grande experiments operated in KIT-Campus North, Karlsruhe (Germany) from 1993 to 2012. The two experiments studied primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 1014 eV to 1018 eV, investigating the change of slope of the spectrum detected at 2 - 4 × 1015 eV, the so called knee. We briefly review the performance of the experiments and then the main results obtained in the operation of both experiments: the test of hadronic interaction models, the all particle primary spectrum, the elemental composition of primary cosmic rays (with the first claim of a knee-like feature of the heavy primaries spectrum) and the search for large scale anisotropies.

The GRAND project and GRANDProto300 experiment

The Giant Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is a proposal for a giant observatory of ultra-high energy cosmic particles (neutrinos, cosmic rays and gamma rays). It will be composed of twenty subarrays of 10 000 antennas each, totaling a detection area of 200 000 km2. GRAND will reach unprecedented sensitivity to neutrinos allowing to detect cosmogenic neutrinos while its sub-degree angular resolution will also make it possible to hunt for point sources and possibly start neutrino astronomy. Combined with its gigantic exposure to ultra-high energy cosmic rays and gamma rays, GRAND will be a powerful tool to solve the century-long mistery of the nature and origin of the particles with highest energy in the Universe. On the path to GRAND, the GRANDProto300 experiment will be deployed in 2020 over a total area of 200 km2. It primarly aims at validating the detection concept of GRAND, but also proposes a rich science program centered on a precise and complete measurement of the air showers initiated by cosmic rays with energies between 1016.5and 1018eV, a range where we expect to observe the transition between the Galactic and extra-galactic origin of cosmic rays.

Hybrid Detection of High Energy Showers in Urban Environments

The Astroneu array comprises 9 large charged particle detectors and 3 RF antennas arranged in three autonomous stations operating at the University Campus of the Hellenic Open University in the city of Patras. Each station of the array detects extensive air showers with primary energy threshold of about 10 TeV, while double station coincidence events select showers with energies higher than 10 3 TeV. In such an environment, the radio detection of air showers is challenging. The RF signals besides being extremely weak they also suffer from strong human made electromagnetic noise. In this work, we present the analysis of double station coincidence events and we study the correlation of the RF data with the particle detectors data. We use the experimental information from the particle detectors and the antennas to select very high energy showers and we compare the timing of the RF signals with the timing of the particle detector signals as well as the strength of the RF signals with the simulation predictions.

Measurement of the Radiation Energy in the Radio Signal of Extensive Air Showers as a Universal Estimator of Cosmic-Ray Energy

We measure the energy emitted by extensive air showers in the form of radio emission in the frequency range from 30 to 80 MHz. Exploiting the accurate energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we obtain a radiation energy of 15.8±0.7(stat)±6.7(syst)  MeV for cosmic rays with an energy of 1 EeV arriving perpendicularly to a geomagnetic field of 0.24 G, scaling quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy. A comparison with predictions from state-of-the-art first-principles calculations shows agreement with our measurement. The radiation energy provides direct access to the calorimetric energy in the electromagnetic cascade of extensive air showers. Comparison with our result thus allows the direct calibration of any cosmic-ray radio detector against the well-established energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

Accelerator Measurements of Magnetically Induced Radio Emission from Particle Cascades with Applications to Cosmic-Ray Air Showers

For 50 years, cosmic-ray air showers have been detected by their radio emission. We present the first laboratory measurements that validate electrodynamics simulations used in air shower modeling. An experiment at SLAC provides a beam test of radio-frequency (rf) radiation from charged particle cascades in the presence of a magnetic field, a model system of a cosmic-ray air shower. This experiment provides a suite of controlled laboratory measurements to compare to particle-level simulations of rf emission, which are relied upon in ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray air shower detection. We compare simulations to data for intensity, linearity with magnetic field, angular distribution, polarization, and spectral content. In particular, we confirm modern predictions that the magnetically induced emission in a dielectric forms a cone that peaks at the Cherenkov angle and show that the simulations reproduce the data within systematic uncertainties.

Probing Atmospheric Electric Fields in Thunderstorms through Radio Emission from Cosmic-Ray-Induced Air Showers

We present measurements of radio emission from cosmic ray air showers that took place during thunderstorms. The intensity and polarization patterns of these air showers are radically different from those measured during fair-weather conditions. With the use of a simple two-layer model for the atmospheric electric field, these patterns can be well reproduced by state-of-the-art simulation codes. This in turn provides a novel way to study atmospheric electric fields.

First Experimental Characterization of Microwave Emission from Cosmic Ray Air Showers

We report the first direct measurement of the overall characteristics of microwave radio emission from extensive air showers. Using a trigger provided by the KASCADE-Grande air shower array, the signals of the microwave antennas of the Cosmic-Ray Observation via Microwave Emission experiment have been read out and searched for signatures of radio emission by high-energy air showers in the GHz frequency range. Microwave signals have been detected for more than 30 showers with energies above 3×10^{16}  eV. The observations presented in this Letter are consistent with a mainly forward-directed and polarized emission process in the GHz frequency range. The measurements show that microwave radiation offers a new means of studying air showers at E≥10^{17}  eV.

General description of electromagnetic radiation processes based on instantaneous charge acceleration in "endpoints"

We present a methodology for calculating the electromagnetic radiation from accelerated charged particles. Our formulation-the "endpoint formulation"-combines numerous results developed in the literature in relation to radiation arising from particle acceleration using a complete, and completely general, treatment. We do this by describing particle motion via a series of discrete, instantaneous acceleration events, or "endpoints," with each such event being treated as a source of emission. This method implicitly allows for particle creation and destruction, and is suited to direct numerical implementation in either the time or frequency domains. In this paper we demonstrate the complete generality of our method for calculating the radiated field from charged particle acceleration, and show how it reduces to the classical named radiation processes such as synchrotron, Tamm's description of Vavilov-Cherenkov, and transition radiation under appropriate limits. Using this formulation, we are immediately able to answer outstanding questions regarding the phenomenology of radio emission from ultra-high-energy particle interactions in both the earth's atmosphere and the moon. In particular, our formulation makes it apparent that the dominant emission component of the Askaryan effect (coherent radio-wave radiation from high-energy particle cascades in dense media) comes from coherent "bremsstrahlung" from particle acceleration, rather than coherent Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation.

Coherent Cherenkov radiation from cosmic-ray-induced air showers

Very energetic cosmic rays entering the atmosphere of Earth will create a plasma cloud moving with almost the speed of light. The magnetic field of Earth induces an electric current in this cloud which is responsible for the emission of coherent electromagnetic radiation. We propose to search for a new effect: Because of the index of refraction of air, this radiation is collimated in a Cherenkov cone. To express the difference from usual Cherenkov radiation, i.e., the emission from a fast-moving electric charge, we call this magnetically induced Cherenkov radiation. We indicate its signature and possible experimental verification.

High-energy neutrino astronomy: detection methods and first achievements

In the last century, astronomy evolved from optical observation to the multi-wavelength study of celestial objects from radio waves up to x- and γ-rays, leading to a wealth of new discoveries and opening the way to high-energy astroparticle physics. In particular, the recent success of ground-based very-high-energy γ-ray telescopes has opened a new window on the most powerful and violent objects of the Universe, giving a new insight into the physical processes at work in such sources. In the context of high-energy astronomy, neutrinos constitute a unique probe since they escape from their sources, travel undisturbed on virtually cosmological distances and are produced in high-energy hadronic processes. In particular they would allow a direct detection and unambiguous identification of the sites of acceleration of high-energy baryonic cosmic rays, which remain unknown. This report discusses the physics potential of the domain and reviews the experimental techniques relevant for the detection of high-energy (⩾TeV) neutrinos. The results obtained by the first generation of such detectors are presented, along with the perspectives opened by new projects and prototypes being currently developed.

Observation of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays with the ANITA balloon-borne radio interferometer

We report the observation of 16 cosmic ray events with a mean energy of 1.5 × 10¹⁹ eV via radio pulses originating from the interaction of the cosmic ray air shower with the Antarctic geomagnetic field, a process known as geosynchrotron emission. We present measurements in the 300-900 MHz range, which are the first self-triggered, first ultrawide band, first far-field, and the highest energy sample of cosmic ray events collected with the radio technique. Their properties are inconsistent with current ground-based geosynchrotron models. The emission is 100% polarized in the plane perpendicular to the projected geomagnetic field. Fourteen events are seen to have a phase inversion due to reflection of the radio beam off the ice surface, and two additional events are seen directly from above the horizon. Based on a likelihood analysis, we estimate angular pointing precision of order 2° for the event arrival directions.
