Minimum speed limit for ocean ridge magmatism from 210Pb–226Ra–230Th disequilibria

Evidence of ghost plagioclase signature induced by kinetic fractionation of europium in the Earth's mantle

Crustal recycling in the Earth's mantle is fingerprinted by trace-element and isotopic proxies in oceanic basalts. Positive Eu and Sr anomalies in primitive lavas and melt inclusions that are not otherwise enriched in Al₂O₃ are often interpreted as reflecting the presence of recycled, plagioclase-rich oceanic crust in their mantle source - referred to as "ghost plagioclase" signatures. Here, we report natural evidence of Eu anomalies and extreme crystal-scale heterogeneity developed kinetically in mantle peridotite clinopyroxene. Numerical modelling shows that diffusional fractionation between clinopyroxene and melts can account for this intra-crystal heterogeneity and generate Eu anomalies without requiring plagioclase. We demonstrate that kinetically induced Eu anomalies are likely to develop at temperatures, redox conditions and transport timescales compatible with the genesis of mid-ocean ridge and ocean island basalts. Our results show that, in the absence of converging lines of evidence such as radiogenic isotope data, ghost plagioclase signatures are not an unequivocal proxy for the presence of recycled crust in oceanic basalt sources.

210Pb-226Ra disequilibria in young gas-laden magmas

We present new ²³⁸U-²³⁰Th-²²⁶Ra-²¹⁰Pb and supporting data for young lavas from southwest Pacific island arcs, Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland, and Terceira, Azores. The arc lavas have significant ²³⁸U and ²²⁶Ra excesses, whereas those from the ocean islands have moderate ²³⁰Th and ²²⁶Ra excesses, reflecting mantle melting in the presence of a water-rich fluid in the former and mantle melting by decompression in the latter. Differentiation to erupted compositions in both settings appears to have taken no longer than a few millennia. Variations in the (²¹⁰Pb/²²⁶Ra)₀ values in all settings largely result from degassing processes rather than mineral-melt partitioning. Like most other ocean island basalts, the Terceira basalt has a ²¹⁰Pb deficit, which we attribute to ~8.5 years of steady ²²²Rn loss to a CO₂-rich volatile phase while it traversed the crust. Lavas erupted from water-laden magma systems, including those investigated here, commonly have near equilibrium (²¹⁰Pb/²²⁶Ra)₀ values. Maintaining these equilibrium values requires minimal persistent loss or accumulation of ²²²Rn in a gas phase. We infer that degassing during decompression of water-saturated magmas either causes these magmas to crystallize and stall in reservoirs where they reside under conditions of near stasis, or to quickly rise towards the surface and erupt.

Measuring (210) Pb by accelerator mass spectrometry: a study of isobaric interferences of (204,205,208) Pb and (210) Pb

RATIONALE

The measurement of (210) Pb provides an assessment of the risk an individual faces of developing lung cancer as a result of their exposure to radon and radon decay products. Existing radiometric techniques are not sensitive enough to detect (210) Pb in many exposures. This report describes the further development of a method of measuring (210) Pb using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS).

METHODS

(204,205,208,) (210) Pb measurements were performed by AMS. Samples were prepared from stock solutions of (204) Pb, (205) Pb, (208) Pb and (210) Pb and measured by making PbF3 (-) ions at the IsoTrace AMS facility using a SIMS-type Cs(+) sputter source. Potential interferences in Pb(3) (+) isotope measurement and the overall efficiency of Pb beam production were determined experimentally.

RESULTS

(204) Pb and (205) Pb suffer from molecular and atomic isobaric interferences that cannot be removed without sacrificing the efficiency of (210) Pb measurements whereas (208) Pb suffers from no interferences. The abundance sensitivity of (210) Pb/(208) Pb was 1.3 × 10(-12) . Keeping the (210) Pb/(208) Pb spike below this level resulted in a detection limit of 4.4 mBq of (210) Pb using the IsoTrace AMS facility.

CONCLUSIONS

This study identified key interferences in the measurement of PbF3 (-) → Pb(3) (+) ions and demonstrated a new AMS method to measure (210) Pb. This new AMS technique is about five times more sensitive than gamma and beta spectroscopy measurements of (210) Pb and the measurement time is much shorter. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Rapid remobilization of magmatic crystals kept in cold storage

The processes involved in the formation and storage of magma within the Earth's upper crust are of fundamental importance to volcanology. Many volcanic eruptions, including some of the largest, result from the eruption of components stored for tens to hundreds of thousands of years before eruption. Although the physical conditions of magma storage and remobilization are of paramount importance for understanding volcanic processes, they remain relatively poorly known. Eruptions of crystal-rich magma are often suggested to require the mobilization of magma stored at near-solidus conditions; however, accumulation of significant eruptible magma volumes has also been argued to require extended storage of magma at higher temperatures. What has been lacking in this debate is clear observational evidence linking the thermal (and therefore physical) conditions within a magma reservoir to timescales of storage-that is, thermal histories. Here we present a method of constraining such thermal histories by combining timescales derived from uranium-series disequilibria, crystal sizes and trace-element zoning in crystals. At Mount Hood (Oregon, USA), only a small fraction of the total magma storage duration (at most 12 per cent and probably much less than 1 per cent) has been spent at temperatures above the critical crystallinity (40-50 per cent) at which magma is easily mobilized. Partial data sets for other volcanoes also suggest that similar conditions of magma storage are widespread and therefore that rapid mobilization of magmas stored at near-solidus temperatures is common. Magma storage at low temperatures indicates that, although thermobarometry calculations based on mineral compositions may record the conditions of crystallization, they are unlikely to reflect the conditions of most of the time that the magma is stored. Our results also suggest that largely liquid magma bodies that can be imaged geophysically will be ephemeral features and therefore their detection could indicate imminent eruption.
