Ligand-induced substrate steering and reshaping of [Ag2(H)](+) scaffold for selective CO2 extrusion from formic acid

Ligand effect on Ru-centered species toward methane activation

Ligands have been known to profoundly affect the chemical transformations of methane, yet significant challenges remain in shedding light on the underlying mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate that the conversion of methane can be regulated by Ru centered cations with a series of ligands (C, CH, CNH, CHCNH). Gas-phase experiments complemented by theoretical dynamic analysis were performed to explore the essences and principles governing the ligand effect. In contrast to the inert Ru+, [RuC]+, and [RuCNH]+ toward CH4, the dehydrogenation dominates the reaction of ligand-regulated systems [RuCH]+/CH4 and [RuCHCNH]+/CH4. In active cases, CH acts as active sites, and regulates the activation of CH4 assisted by the "seemingly inert" CNH ligand.

Reverse water-gas shift catalyzed by RhnVO3,4- (n = 3-7) cluster anions under variable temperatures

A fundamental understanding of the exact structural characteristics and reaction mechanisms of interface active sites is vital to engineering an energetic metal-support boundary in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, benefiting from a newly developed high-temperature ion trap reactor, the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) (CO2 + H2 → CO + H2O) catalyzed by a series of compositionally and structurally well-defined RhnVO3,4- (n = 3-7) clusters were identified under variable temperatures (298-773 K). It is discovered that the Rh5-7VO3,4- clusters can function more effectively to drive RWGS at relatively low temperatures. The experimentally observed size-dependent catalytic behavior was rationalized by quantum-chemical calculations; the framework of RhnVO3,4- is constructed by depositing the Rhn clusters on the VO3,4 "support", and a sandwiched base-acid-base [Rhout--Rhin+-VO3,4-; Rhout and Rhin represent the outer and inner Rh atoms, respectively] feature in Rh5-7VO3,4- governs the adsorption and activation of reactants as well as the facile desorption of the products. In contrast, isolated Rh5-7- clusters without the electronic modification of the VO3,4 "support" can only catalyze RWGS under relatively high-temperature conditions.

CO Oxidation Promoted by NO Adsorption on RhMn2O3- Cluster Anions

CO oxidation represents an important model reaction in the gas phase to provide a clear structure-reactivity relationship in related heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, in combination with mass spectrometry experiments and quantum-chemical calculations, we identified that the RhMn2O3- cluster cannot oxidize CO into gas-phase CO2 at room temperature, while the NO preadsorbed products RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] are highly reactive in CO oxidation. This discovery is helpful to get a fundamental understanding on the reaction behavior in real-world three-way catalytic conditions where different kinds of reactants coexist. Theoretical calculations were performed to rationalize the crucial roles of preadsorbed NO where the strongly attached NO on the Rh atom can greatly stabilize the products RhMn2O2-[(NO)1,2] during CO oxidation and at the same time works together with the Rh atom to store electrons that stay originally in the attached CO2- unit. The leading result is that the desorption of CO2, which is the rate-determining step of CO oxidation by RhMn2O3-, can be greatly facilitated on the reactions of RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] with CO.

Liberation of carbon monoxide from formic acid mediated by molybdenum oxyanions

Multistage mass spectrometry experiments, isotope labelling and DFT calculations were used to explore whether selective decarbonylation of formic acid could be mediated by molybdate anions [(MoO3)x(OH)]- (x = 1 and 2) via a formal catalytic cycle involving two steps. In step 1, both molybdate anions undergo gas-phase ion-molecule reactions (IMR) with formic acid to produce the coordinated formates [(MoO3)x(O2CH)]- and H2O. In step 2, both coordinated formates [(MoO3)x(O2CH)]- undergo decarbonylation under collision-induced dissociation (CID) conditions to reform the molybdate anions [(MoO3)x(OH)]- (x = 1 and 2), thus closing a formal catalytic cycle. In the case of [MoO3(O2CH)]- an additional decarboxylation channel also occurs to yield [MoO3(H)]-, which is unreactive towards formic acid. The reaction between [Mo18O3(18OH)]- and formic acid gives rise to [Mo18O3(O2CH)]- highlighting that ligand substitution occurs without 18O/16O exchange between the coordinated 18OH ligand and HC16O2H. The reaction between [(MoO3)x(OD)]- (x = 1 and 2) and DCO2H initially produces [(MoO3)x(OH)]- (x = 1 and 2), indicating that D/H exchange occurs. DFT calculations were carried out to investigate the reaction mechanisms and energetics associated with both steps of the formal catalytic cycle and to better understand the competition between decarbonylation and decarboxylation, which is crucial in developing a selective catalyst. The CO and CO2 loss channels from the monomolybdate anion [MoO3(O2CH)]- have similar barrier heights which is in agreement with experimental results where both fragmentation channels are observed. In contrast, the dimolybdate anion is more selective, since the decarbonylation pathway of [(MoO3)2(O2CH)]- is both kinetically and thermodynamically favoured, which agrees with experimental observations where the CO loss channel is solely observed.

Size-Dependent Reactivity of Con- (n = 5-25) Cluster Anions toward Carbon Dioxide

A fundamental understanding of the reactivity evolution of nanosized clusters at an atomically precise level is pivotal to assemble desired materials with promising candidates. Benefiting from the tandem mass spectrometer coupled with a high-temperature ion-trap reactor, the reactions of mass-selected Con- (n = 5-25) clusters with CO2 were investigated and the increased reactivity of Co20-25- was newly discovered herein. This finding marks an important step to understand property evolution of subnanometer metal clusters (Co25-, ∼0.8 nm) atom-by-atom. The reasons behind the increased reactivity of Co20-25- were proposed by analyzing the reactions of smaller Co6-8- clusters that exhibit significantly different reactivity toward CO2, in which a lower electron affinity of Con contributes to the capture of CO2 while the flexibility of Con- could play vital roles to stabilize reaction intermediates and suppress the barriers of O-CO rupture and CO desorption.

Electronic spectroscopy of homo- and heterometallic binuclear coinage metal phosphine complexes in isolation

Binuclear coinage metal phosphine complexes are examined under ion trap isolation in order to elucidate their noncovalent binding, structural properties and intrinsic electronic spectra. Our survey shows an intriguing order of electronic transitions obtained by in situ synthesis and mass-spectrometrically supported UV photodissociation spectroscopy on a series of six isolated homo- and heterobinuclear complexes of type [MM'(dcpm)2]2+ (M, M' = CuI, AgI, AuI; dcpm = bis(dicyclohexyl-phosphino)methane). This approach provides the unique opportunity to study all possible coinage metal interactions within a fixed ligand framework. A successive blue-shift (33 700-38 500 cm-1; 297-260 nm) of the lowest-energy bright electronic transition energy in gas phase was observed in the order of Cu2 < CuAu < CuAg < Au2 < AgAu < Ag2. This order was reproduced by quantum chemical calculations using a scalar-relativistic GW-Bethe-Salpeter-equation (GW-BSE) approach. Theory ascribes the electronic bands of all complexes to metal-centered 1MC(dσ*-pσ) transitions revealing a strengthening of metal-metal' (M-M') binding upon excitation, in agreement to mass spetrometric results. A test of the correlation of transition energies with M-M' distance by quantum chemical calculations of single point energies as a function of intermetallic distance indicates qualitative agreement with experimental results. However, the experimentally observed high sensitivity of spectroscopic shifts towards metal composition cannot be accounted for solely by M-M' distance variation. The differences in electronic transitions are qualitatively rationalized by the varying (n + 1)s (n = 3, 4, 5) orbital contributions (increase from Cu2via CuAu/CuAg to Au2/AgAu/Ag2) within the nd(n + 1)s/p-hybridization for the ground electronic state of the different complexes, whereas the excited state (of (n + 1)p orbital character) shows significantly less variation in energy. In particular, the observed spectroscopic and mass spectrometric sequence for the Ag/Au complexes is traced back to the interplay of Pauli repulsion and variation in metal-ligand bond strength within the orbital hybridization model.

Catalytic NO Reduction by Noble-Metal-Free Vanadium-Aluminum Oxide Cluster Anions

By using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and guided by the newly discovered single-electron mechanism (SEM; e.g., Ti³⁺ + 2NO → Ti⁴⁺-O^•- + N₂O), we determined experimentally that the vanadium-aluminum oxide clusters V_4-xAl_xO_10-x^- (x = 1-3) can catalyze the reduction of NO by CO and substantiated theoretically that the SEM still prevails in driving the catalysis. This finding marks an important step in cluster science in which a noble metal had been demonstrated to be indispensable in NO activation mediated by heteronuclear metal clusters. The results provide new insights into the SEM in which active V-Al cooperative communication favors the transfer of an unpaired electron from the V atom to NO attached to the Al atom on which the reduction reaction actually takes place. This study provides a clear picture for improving our understanding of related heterogeneous catalysis, and the electron hopping behavior induced by NO adsorption could be a fundamental chemistry for driving NO reduction.

Filtration of the preferred catalyst for reverse water-gas shift among Rhn- (n = 3-11) clusters by mass spectrometry under variable temperatures

The key to optimizing energy-consuming catalytic conversions lies in acquiring a fundamental understanding of the nature of the active sites and the mechanisms of elementary steps at an atomically precise level, while it is challenging to capture the crucial step that determines the overall temperature of a real-life catalytic reaction. Herein, benefiting from a newly-developed high-temperature ion trap reactor, the reverse water-gas shift (CO₂ + H₂ → CO + H₂O) reaction catalyzed by the Rh_n^- (n = 3-11) clusters was investigated under variable temperatures (298-783 K) and the critical temperature that each elementary step (Rh_n^- + CO₂ and Rh_nO^- + H₂) requires to take place was identified. The Rh₄^- cluster strikingly surpasses other Rh_n^- clusters to drive the catalysis at a mild starting temperature (∼440 K). This finding represents the first example that a specifically sized cluster catalyst that works under an optimum condition can be accurately filtered by using state-of-the-art mass spectrometric experiments and rationalized by quantum-chemical calculations.

Poly-Hydride [AuI 7 (PPh3 )7 H5 ](SbF6 )2 cluster complex: Structure, Transformation, and Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction Properties

Hydride Au^I bonds are labile due to the mismatch in electric potential of an oxidizing metal and reducing ligand, and therefore the structure and structure-activity relationships of nanoclusters that contain them are seldom studied. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of [Au₇ (PPh₃ )₇ H₅ ](SbF₆ )₂ (abbrev. Au₇ H₅ ²⁺ ), an Au cluster complex containing five hydride ligands, which decomposed to give [Au₈ (PPh₃ )₇ ]²⁺ (abbrev. Au₈ ²⁺ ) upon exposure to light (300 to 450 nm). The valence state of Au^I and H^- was verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, NMR, UV/Vis and XPS. The two nanoclusters behaved differently in the electrocatalytic CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR): Au₇ H₅ ²⁺ exhibited 98.2 % selectivity for H₂ , whereas Au₈ ²⁺ was selective for CO (73.5 %). Further DFT calculations showed that the H^- ligand inhibited the CO₂ RR process compared with the electron-donor H.

Gas-phase reactions driven by polarized metal-metal bonding in atomic clusters

Multimetallic catalysts exhibit great potential in the activation and catalytic transformation of small molecules. The polarized metal-metal bonds have been gradually recognized to account for the reactivity of multimetallic catalysts due to the synergistic effect of different metal centers. Gas-phase reactions on atomic clusters that compositionally resemble the active sites on related condensed-phase catalysts provide a widely accepted strategy to clarify the nature of polarized metal-metal bonds and the mechanistic details of elementary steps involved in the catalysis driven by this unique chemical bonding. This perspective review concerns the progress in the fundamental understanding of industrially and environmentally important reactions that are closely related to the polarized metal-metal bonds in clusters at a strictly molecular level. The following topics have been summarized and discussed: (1) catalytic CO oxidation with O₂, H₂O, and NO as oxidants (2) and the activation of other inert molecules (e.g., CH₄, CO₂, and N₂) mediated with clusters featuring polarized metal-metal bonding. It turns out that the findings in the gas phase parallel the catalytic behaviors of condensed-phase catalysts and the knowledge can prove to be essential in inspiring future design of promising catalysts.

Near thermal, selective liberation of hydrogen from formic acid catalysed by copper hydride ate complexes

A near thermal two-step catalytic cycle for the selective release of hydrogen from formic acid by mononuclear cuprate anions was revealed using multistage mass spectrometry experiments, deuterium labelling and DFT calculations. In gas-phase ion-molecule reactions, mononuclear copper hydride anions [(L)Cu(H)]^- (where L = H^-, O₂CH^-, BH₄^- and CN^-) were found to react with formic acid (HCO₂H) to yield [(L)Cu(O₂CH)]^- and H₂. The copper formate anions [(L)Cu(O₂CH)]^- can decarboxylate via collision-induced dissociation (CID) to reform the copper hydride [(L)Cu(H)]^-, thereby closing the two-step catalytic cycle. Analogous labelling experiments with d₁-formic acid (DCO₂H) reveal that the decarboxylation process also occurs spontaneously. A kinetic study was carried out to provide further insights into the species involved in this reaction. Energetics from density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the key decarboxylation step can occur without CID, thus in support of experimental observations.

Equation-of-Motion Methods for the Calculation of Femtosecond Time-Resolved 4-Wave-Mixing and N-Wave-Mixing Signals

Femtosecond nonlinear spectroscopy is the main tool for the time-resolved detection of photophysical and photochemical processes. Since most systems of chemical interest are rather complex, theoretical support is indispensable for the extraction of the intrinsic system dynamics from the detected spectroscopic responses. There exist two alternative theoretical formalisms for the calculation of spectroscopic signals, the nonlinear response-function (NRF) approach and the spectroscopic equation-of-motion (EOM) approach. In the NRF formalism, the system-field interaction is assumed to be sufficiently weak and is treated in lowest-order perturbation theory for each laser pulse interacting with the sample. The conceptual alternative to the NRF method is the extraction of the spectroscopic signals from the solutions of quantum mechanical, semiclassical, or quasiclassical EOMs which govern the time evolution of the material system interacting with the radiation field of the laser pulses. The NRF formalism and its applications to a broad range of material systems and spectroscopic signals have been comprehensively reviewed in the literature. This article provides a detailed review of the suite of EOM methods, including applications to 4-wave-mixing and N-wave-mixing signals detected with weak or strong fields. Under certain circumstances, the spectroscopic EOM methods may be more efficient than the NRF method for the computation of various nonlinear spectroscopic signals.

Identifying the structural configurations of precursors for CO dissociation is fundamentally interesting and industrially important in the fields of, e.g., Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Herein, we demonstrated that CO could be dissociated on polynuclear vanadium nitride V₄N₅^- clusters at room temperature, and a key intermediate, with CO in a N-assisted tilted bridge coordination where the C-O bond ruptures easily, was discovered. The reaction was characterized by mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemistry calculations, and the nature of the adsorbed CO on product V₄N₅CO^- was further characterized by a collision-induced dissociation experiment. Theoretical analysis evidences that CO dissociation is predominantly governed by the low-coordinated V and N atoms on the (V₃N₄)VN^- cluster and the V₃N₄ moiety resembles a support. This finding strongly suggests that a novel mode for facile CO dissociation was identified in a gas-phase cluster study.

Water-Gas Shift Catalyzed by Iridium-Vanadium Oxide Clusters IrVO2- with Iridium in a Rare Oxidation State of -II

The discovery of compounds containing transition metals with an unusual and well-established oxidation state is vital to enrich our horizon on formal oxidation state. Herein, benefiting from the study of the water-gas shift reaction (CO + H₂O → CO₂ + H₂) mediated with the iridium-vanadium oxide cluster IrVO₂^-, the missing -II oxidation state of iridium was identified. The reactions were performed by using our newly developed double ion trap reactors that can spatially separate the addition of reactants and are characterized by mass spectrometry and quantum-chemical calculations. This finding makes an important step that all the proposed 13 oxidation states of iridium (+IX to -III) have been known. The iridium atom in the IrVO₂^- cluster features the Ir═V double bond and resembles chemically the coordinated oxygen atom. A reactivity study demonstrated that the flexible role switch of iridium between an oxygen-atom like (Ir^-IIVO₂^-) and a transition-metal-atom like behavior (Ir^+IIVO₃^-) in different species can drive the water-gas shift reaction in the gas phase under ambient conditions. This result parallels and well rationalizes the extraordinary reactivity of oxide-supported iridium single-atom catalysts in related condensed-phase reactions.

Noble metals dispersed on transition-metal carbides exhibit extraordinary activity in CO₂ catalytic conversion and bimetallic carbides generated at the interface were proposed to contribute to the observed activity. Heteronuclear metal carbide clusters (HMCCs) that compositionally resemble the bimetallic carbides are suitable models to get a fundamental understanding of the reactivity of the related condensed-phase catalysts, while the reaction of HMCCs with CO₂ has not been touched in the gas phase. Herein, benefiting from the newly designed double ion trap reactors, the reaction of laser-ablation generated and mass-selected RhTaC₂^- clusters with CO₂ was studied. The experimental results identified that RhTaC₂^- can reduce four CO₂ molecules consecutively and generate the product RhTaC₂O₄^-. The pivotal roles of Rh-Ta synergy and the C₂ ligand in driving CO₂ reduction were rationalized by theoretical calculations. The presence of an attached CO unit on the product RhTaC₂O₄^- was evidenced by the collision-induced dissociation experiment, providing a fundamental strategy to alleviate carbon deposition under a CO₂ atmosphere at elevated temperatures.

Reverse water-gas shift reaction catalyzed by diatomic rhodium anions

The reverse water-gas shift (RWGS, CO₂ + H₂ → CO + H₂O, ΔH₂₉₈ = +0.44 eV) reaction mediated by the diatomic anion Rh₂^- was successfully constructed. The generation of a gas-phase H₂O molecule and ion product [Rh₂(CO)_ads]^- was identified unambiguously at room temperature and the only elementary step that requires extra energy to complete the catalysis is the desorption of CO from [Rh₂(CO)_ads]^-. This experimentally identified Rh₂^- anion represents the first gas-phase species that can drive the RWGS reaction because it is challenging to design effective routes to yield H₂O from CO₂ and H₂. The reactions were performed by using our newly developed double ion trap reactors and characterized by mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-level quantum-chemical calculations. We found that the order that the reactants (CO₂ or D₂) were fed into the reactor did not have a pronounced impact on the reactivity and the final product distribution (D₂O and Rh₂CO^-). The atomically precise insights into the key steps to guide the reaction toward the RWGS direction were provided.

On the Hydrogen Oxalate Binding Motifs onto Dinuclear Cu and Ag Metal Phosphine Complexes

We report the binding geometries of the isomers that are formed when the hydrogen oxalate ((CO₂)₂H=HOx) anion attaches to dinuclear coinage metal phosphine complexes of the form [M₁M₂dcpm₂(HOx)]⁺ with M=Cu, Ag and dcpm=bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane, abbreviated [MM]⁺. These structures are established by comparison of isomer‐selective experimental vibrational band patterns displayed by the cryogenically cooled and N₂‐tagged cations with DFT calculations of the predicted spectra for various local minima. Two isomeric classes are identified that feature either attachment of the carboxylate oxygen atoms to the two metal centers (end‐on docking) or attachment of oxygen atoms on different carbon atoms asymmetrically to the metal ions (side‐on docking). Within each class, there are additional isomeric variations according to the orientation of the OH group. This behavior indicates that HOx undergoes strong and directional coordination to [CuCu]⁺ but adopts a more flexible coordination to [AgAg]⁺. Infrared spectra of the bare ions, fragmentation thresholds and ion mobility measurements are reported to explore the behaviors of the complexes at ambient temperature.

ORGANOMETALLIC GAS-PHASE ION CHEMISTRY AND CATALYSIS: INSIGHTS INTO THE USE OF METAL CATALYSTS TO PROMOTE SELECTIVITY IN THE REACTIONS OF CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES

Carboxylic acids are valuable organic substrates as they are widely available, easy to handle, and exhibit structural and functional variety. While they are used in many standard synthetic protocols, over the past two decades numerous studies have explored new modes of metal-mediated reactivity of carboxylic acids and their derivatives. Mass spectrometry-based studies can provide fundamental mechanistic insights into these new modes of reactivity. Here gas-phase models for the following catalytic transformations of carboxylic acids and their derivatives are reviewed: protodecarboxylation; dehydration; decarbonylation; reaction as coordinated bases in C-H bond activation; remote functionalization and decarboxylative C-C bond coupling. In each case the catalytic problem is defined, insights from gas-phase studies are highlighted, comparisons with condensed-phase systems are made and perspectives are reached. Finally, the potential role for mechanistic studies that integrate both gas- and condensed-phase studies is highlighted by recent studies on the discovery of new catalysts for the selective decomposition of formic acid and the invention of the new extrusion-insertion class of reactions for the synthesis of amides, thioamides, and amidines. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Water Gas Shift Reaction Catalyzed by Rhodium-Manganese Oxide Cluster Anions

Fundamental understanding of the nature of active sites in real-life water gas shift (WGS) catalysts that can convert CO and H₂O into CO₂ and H₂ is crucial to engineer related catalysts performing under ambient conditions. Herein, we identified that the WGS reaction can be, in principle, catalyzed by rhodium-manganese oxide clusters Rh₂MnO_1,2^- in the gas phase at room temperature. This is the first example of the construction of such a potential catalysis in cluster science because it is challenging to discover clusters that can abstract the oxygen from H₂O and then supply the anchored oxygen to oxidize CO. The WGS reaction was characterized by mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. The coordinated oxygen in Rh₂MnO_1,2^- is paramount for the generation of an electron-rich Mn⁺-Rh^- bond that is critical to capture and reduce H₂O and giving rise to a polarized Rh⁺-Rh^- bond that functions as the real redox center to drive the WGS reaction.

Activation of Carbon Dioxide by CoCDn- (n = 0-4) Anions

Laser ablation generated CoCD_n^- (n = 0-4) anions were mass selected and then reacted with CO₂ in an ion trap reactor. The reactions were characterized by mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations. The experimental results demonstrated that the CoC^- anion can convert CO₂ into CO. In contrast, the bare Co^- anion is inert toward CO₂. Coordinated D ligands can modify the reactivity of CoCD_1-4^- in which CoCD_1-3^- can reduce CO₂ into CO selectively and CoCD₄^- can only adsorb CO₂. The crucial roles of the coordinated C and D ligands to tune the reactivity of CoCD_n^- (n = 0-4) toward CO₂ were rationalized by theoretical calculations. Note that the hydrogenation process that is usually observed in the reactions of gas-phase metal hydrides with CO₂ is completely suppressed for the reactions CoCD_n^- + CO₂. This study provides insights into the molecular-level origin for the observations that CO can be selectively generated from CO₂ catalyzed by cobalt-containing carbides in heterogeneous catalysis.

Ion Mobility Spectrometry Characterization of the Intermediate Hydrogen-Containing Gold Cluster Au7(PPh3)7H52

We employ ion mobility spectrometry and density functional theory to determine the structure of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ (PPh₃ = triphenylphosphine), which was recently identified by high mass resolution mass spectrometry. Experimental ion-neutral collision cross sections represent the momentum transfer between the ionic clusters and gas molecules averaged over the relative thermal velocities of the colliding pair, thereby providing structural insights. Theoretical calculations indicate the geometry of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ is similar to Au₇(PPh₃)₇⁺, with three hydrogen atoms bridging two gold atoms and two hydrogen atoms forming single Au-H bonds. Collision-induced dissociation products observed during IMS experiments reveal that smaller hydrogen-containing clusters may be produced through fragmentation of Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺. Our findings indicate that hydrogen-containing species like Au₇(PPh₃)₇H₅²⁺ act as intermediates in the formation of larger phosphine ligated gold clusters. These results advance the understanding and ability to control the mechanisms of size-selective cluster formation, which is necessary for scalable synthesis of clusters with tailored properties.

Phenyl-Group Exchange in Triphenylphosphine Mediated by Cationic Gold-Platinum Complexes-A Gas-Phase Mimetic Approach

The PPh₃ ligands in the heterodinuclear AuPt complex [(Ph₃P)AuPt(PPh₃)₃][BAr₄^F] (BAr₄^F = tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate) exhibit a high fluxionality on the AuPt core. Fast intramolecular and slow intermolecular processes for the reversible exchange of the PPh₃ ligands have been identified. When [(Ph₃P)AuPt(PPh₃)₃][BAr₄^F] is heated in solution, the formation of benzene is observed, and a trinuclear, cationic AuPt₂ complex is generated. This process is preceded by reversible phenyl-group exchange between the PPh₃ ligands present in the reaction mixture as elucidated by deuterium-labeling studies. Both the elimination of benzene and the preceding reversible phenyl-group exchange have originally been observed in mass-spectrometry-based CID experiments (CID = Collision-Induced Dissociation). While CID of mass-selected [Au,Pt,(PPh₃)₄]⁺ results exclusively in the loss of PPh₃, the resulting cation [Au,Pt,(PPh₃)₃]⁺ selectively eliminates C₆H₆. Thus, the dissociation of a PPh₃ ligand from [Au,Pt,(PPh₃)₃]⁺ is energetically not able to compete with processes which result in C-H- and C-P-bond cleavage. In both media, the heterobimetallic nature of the employed complexes is the key for the observed reactivity. Only the intimate interplay of the gas-phase investigations, studies in solution, and thorough DFT computations allowed for the elucidation of the mechanistic details of the reactivity of [(Ph₃P)AuPt(PPh₃)₃][BAr₄^F].

Using electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry to explore formation and gas-phase chemistry of silver nanoclusters generated from the reaction of silver salts with NaBH4 in the presence of bis(diphenylarsino)methane

Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) of mixtures of AgBF4 or AgNO3 with the capping ligand bis(diphenylarsino)methane ((Ph2 As)2 CH2 = dpam) in a solution of acetonitrile revealed the formation of the following cations: [Ag(CH3 CN)(dpam)]+ , [Ag(dpam)2 ]+ , [Ag2 (Cl)(dpam)2 ]+ , and [Ag3 (Cl)2 (dpam)3 ]+ . Addition of NaBH4 to these solutions results in the formation of the cluster cations [Ag2 (BH4 )(dpam)2 ]+ , [Ag2 (BH4 )(dpam)3 ]+ , [Ag3 (H)(BH4 )(dpam)3 ]+ , [Ag3 (BH4 )2 (dpam)3 ]+ , [Ag3 (H)(Cl)(dpam)3 ]+ , and [Ag3 (I)(BH4 )(dpam)3 ]+ , as established by ESI-MS. Use of NaBD4 confirmed that borohydride is the source of the hydride in these clusters. An Orbitrap Fusion LUMOS mass spectrometer was used to explore the gas-phase unimolecular chemistry of selected clusters via multistage mass spectrometry (MSn ) experiments employing low-energy collision-induced dissociation (CID) and high-energy collision-induced dissociation (HCD) experiments. The borohydride containing clusters fragment via two competing pathways: (i) ligand loss and (ii) B-H bond activation involving BH3 loss. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to calculate the energetics of the optimized structures for all precursor ions, fragment ions, and neutrals and to estimate the reaction endothermicities. Generally, there is reasonable agreement between the most abundant product ion formed and the predicted endothermicity of the associated reaction channel. The DFT calculations predicted that the novel dimer [Ag2 (BH4 )(dpam)2 ]+ has a paddlewheel structure in which the dpam and BH4 - ligands bridge both silver centers.

An Eight-Atom Iridium-Aluminum Oxide Cluster IrAlO6+ Catalytically Oxidizes Six CO Molecules

Fundamental understanding regarding oxygen storage capacity involving how and why an active site can buffer a large number of oxygen atoms in redox processes is vital to the design of advanced oxygen storage materials, while it is challenging because of the complexity of heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we identified that an eight-atom iridium-aluminum oxide cluster IrAlO₆⁺ can transfer all the oxygen atoms to catalytically oxidize six CO molecules. This finding represents a breakthrough in cluster catalysis where at most three oxygen atoms from a heteronuclear metal oxide cluster can be catalytically involved in CO oxidation. We found that oxygen prefers to be stored on aluminum to form an O₃^-• radical in the energetically unfavorable IrAlO₆⁺ isomer and generate the low-coordinated iridium that is pivotal to capturing CO and triggering the catalysis. The powerful electron cycling capability of iridium and the cooperative iridium-aluminum interplay are emphasized to drive the oxygen atom-transfer behavior.

Photoinitiated Charge Transfer in a Triangular Silver(I) Hydride Complex and Its Oxophilicity

The photoexcitation of a triangular silver(I) hydride complex, [Ag₃ (μ₃ -H)(μ₂ -dcpm)₃ ](PF₆ )₂ ([P](PF₆ )₂ , dcpm=bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane), designed with "UV-silent" bis-phosphine ligands, provokes hydride-to-Ag₃ single and double electron transfer. The nature of the electronic transitions has been authenticated by absorption and photodissociation spectroscopy in parallel with high-level quantum-chemical computations utilizing the GW method and Bethe-Salpeter equation (GW-BSE). Specific photofragments of mass-selected [P]²⁺ ions testify to charge transfer and competing pathways resulting from the unique [Ag₃ (μ₃ -H)]²⁺ scaffold. This structural motif of [P](PF₆ )₂ has been unequivocally verified by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy in concert with DFT and X-ray diffraction structural analysis, which revealed short equilateral Ag-Ag distances (d_AgAg =3.08 Å) within the range of argentophilic interactions. The reduced radical cation [P]^{. +} exhibits strong oxophilicity, forming [P+O₂ ]^.+ ,which is a model intermediate for silver oxidation catalysis.

Role of Ligand in the Selective Production of Hydrogen from Formic Acid Catalysed by the Mononuclear Cationic Zinc Complexes [(L)Zn(H)]+ (L=tpy, phen, and bpy)

A series of zinc-based catalysts was evaluated for their efficiency in decomposing formic acid into molecular hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the gas phase using quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry experiments. The effectiveness of the catalysts in the series [(L)Zn(H)]⁺ , where L=2,2':6',2''-terpyridine (tpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2'-bipyrydine (bpy), was found to depend on the ligand used, which turned out to be fundamental in tuning the catalytic properties of the zinc complex. Specifically, [(tpy)Zn(H)]⁺ displayed the fastest reaction with formic acid proceeding by dehydrogenation to produce the zinc formate complex [(tpy)Zn(O₂ CH)]⁺ and H₂ . The catalysts [(L)Zn(H)]⁺ are reformed by decarboxylating the zinc formate complexes [(L)Zn(O₂ CH)]⁺ by collision-induced dissociation, which is the only reaction channel for each of the ligands used. The decarboxylation reaction was found to be reversible, since the zinc hydride complexes [(L)Zn(H)]⁺ react with carbon dioxide yielding the zinc formate complex. This reaction was again substantially faster for L=tpy than L=phen or bpy. The energetics and mechanisms of these processes were modelled using several levels of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimental results are fully supported by the computational predictions.

Silver-Catalyzed Reduction of Quinolines in Water

A ligand- and base-free silver-catalyzed reduction of quinolines and electron-deficient aromatic N-heteroarenes in water has been described. Mechanistic studies revealed that the effective reducing species was Ag-H. This versatile catalytic protocol provided facile, environmentally friendly, and practical access to a variety of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline derivatives at room temperature.

Catalytic CO Oxidation by Noble-Metal-Free Ni2VO4,5- Clusters: A CO Self-Promoted Mechanism

Catalytic CO oxidation is an important model reaction in gas-phase studies to provide a clear structure-reactivity understanding in related heterogeneous catalysis, whereas CO oxidation catalyzed by noble-metal (NM) free species has been scarcely reported, and the fundamental aspects are elusive. Herein a CO self-promoted mechanism of catalytic CO oxidation by O₂ mediated with the Ni₂VO_4,5^- clusters was experimentally identified and theoretically rationalized. The catalysis was characterized by mass spectrometry and quantum chemistry calculations. Ni₂VO₅^- can oxidize CO to generate an oxygen-deficient product Ni₂VO₄^-, which can only adsorb CO to give rise to Ni₂VO₄CO^-, and the oxidative reactivity of Ni₂VO₄^- can be boosted by the adsorbed  CO. This finding reinforces the significance that the attached CO can modify the electronic structure of the Ni₂ unit in Ni₂VO₄CO^- and make the Ni₂ unit behave like NM atoms to store the released electrons in an oxygen atom transfer process.

Neutral Au1-Doped Cluster Catalysts AuTi2O3-6 for CO Oxidation by O2

Oxide supported gold catalysts (e.g., Au/TiO₂) are of great significance in heterogeneous catalysis owing to their extraordinary catalytic activity. Study of heteronuclear metal oxide clusters (HMOCs, e.g., Au _xTi _yO _z ^q) is an important way to uncover the molecular-level mechanisms of gold catalysis in the related heterogeneous catalytic systems. However, the current studies of HMOCs are focused on charged clusters with little attention paid to neutral species. The reactivity study of neutral HMOCs is vital to have a comprehensive understanding of heterogeneous catalysis, but it is experimentally challenging because of the difficulty of cluster ionization and detection without fragmentation. Herein, benefiting from a homemade time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled with a vacuum ultraviolet laser system, the reactivity of neutral Au₁-doped titanium oxide clusters AuTi₂O_3-6 in catalytic CO oxidation by O₂ has been successfully identified. The mechanistic details of the catalysis have been elucidated by quantum chemistry calculations. The crucial roles of the mobile AuCO species that can facilitate not only the process of CO oxidation but also the process of O₂ activation have been discovered in the cluster catalysis. The fascinating results are of substantial importance to understand the mechanisms of CO oxidation over Au/TiO₂, one type of the best studied gold catalysts.

Gas-phase ion trap mass spectrometry experiments and density functional theory calculations have been used to examine the routes to the formation of the 1,8-naphthyridine (napy) ligated geminally dimetallated phenyl complexes [(napy)Cu₂(Ph)]⁺, [(napy)Ag₂(Ph)]⁺ and [(napy)CuAg(Ph)]⁺ via extrusion of CO₂ or SO₂ under collision-induced dissociation conditions from their corresponding precursor complexes [(napy)Cu₂(O₂CPh)]⁺, [(napy)Ag₂(O₂CPh)]⁺, [(napy)CuAg(O₂CPh)]⁺ and [(napy)Cu₂(O₂SPh)]⁺, [(napy)Ag₂(O₂SPh)]⁺, [(napy)CuAg(O₂SPh)]⁺. Desulfination was found to be more facile than decarboxylation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that extrusion proceeds via two transition states: TS1 enables isomerization of the O, O-bridged benzoate to its O-bound form; TS2 involves extrusion of CO₂ or SO₂ with the concomitant formation of the organometallic cation and has the highest barrier. Of all the organometallic cations, only [(napy)Cu₂(Ph)]⁺ reacts with water via hydrolysis to give [(napy)Cu₂(OH)]⁺, consistent with density functional theory calculations which show that hydrolysis proceeds via the initial formation of the adduct [(napy)Cu₂(Ph)(H₂O)]⁺ which then proceeds via TS3 in which the coordinated H₂O is deprotonated by the coordinated phenyl anion to give the product complex [(napy)Cu₂(OH)(C₆H₆)]⁺, which then loses benzene.

Unambiguous hydrogenation of CO2 by coinage-metal hydride anions: an intuitive idea based on in silico experiments

Coinage metal hydride anions, especially AgH⁻, can effectively and deterministically hydrogenate CO₂ to HCO₂⁻.

Periodic Trends Manifested through Gas-Phase Generation of Anions Such as [AlH4]-, [GaH4]-, [InH4]-, [SrH3]-, [BaH3]-, [Ba(0)(η2-O2CH)1]-, [Pb(0)H]-, [Bi(I)H2]-, and Bi- from Formates

Metal-hydride anions of main group elements, such as BaH₃ ^- and InH₄ ^-, were generated by dissociating formate adducts of the respective metal formates. Upon activation, these adducts fragment by formate-ion ejection or by decarboxylation. For adducts of alkali-metal formates, the formate-ion ejection is the preferred pathway, whereas for those of alkaline-earth and group 13-15 metals, the expulsion of CO₂ is the more favorable pathway. Decarboxylation is deemed to yield a metal-hydrogen bond presumably by a hydride transfer to the metal atom. For example, the decarboxylation of Al(η-OCOH)₄ ^- and Ga(η-OCOH)₄ ^- generated AlH₄ ^- and GaH₄ ^-, respectively. The initial fragment-ion with a H-M bond formed in this way from adducts of the heavier metals of group 13 (Ga, In, and Tl) undergo a unimolecular reductive elimination, ascribable to the "inert-pair" effect, to lower the metal-ion oxidation state from +3 to +1. As group 13 is descended, the tendency for this reductive elimination process increases. PbH₃ ^-, generated from the formate adduct of lead formate, reductively eliminated H₂ to form PbH^-, in which Pb is in oxidation state zero. In the energy-minimized structure [H-Pb(η²-H₂)]^-, proposed as an intermediate for the process, a H₂ molecule is coordinated with PbH^- as a dihapto ligand. The formate adducts of strontium and barium produce monoleptic ions such as [M(0)(η²-O₂CH)₁]^-, in which the formate ion is chelated to a neutral metal atom. The bismuth formate adduct undergoes a double reductive elimination process whereby the oxidation state of Bi is reduced from +3 to +1 and then to -1. Upon activation, the initially formed [H-Bi-H]^- ion transforms to an anionic η²-H₂ complex, which eliminates dihydrogen to form the bismuthide anion (Bi^-).

Vibrational Coherence Controls Molecular Fragmentation: Ultrafast Photodynamics of the [Ag2Cl]+ Scaffold

The recently introduced pump-probe fragmentation action spectroscopy reveals a unique observation of excited state vibrational coherence (430-460 fs) in the isolated metal complex [Ag₂(Cl)(dcpm)₂)]⁺ (dcpm = bis(dicyclohexylphosphino)methane) containing the [Ag₂Cl]⁺ scaffold. After photoexcitation by an ¹XMCT transition (260 nm) in an ion trap, an unexpected correlation between specific fragment ions (loss of HCl/Cl^- vs loss of dcpm) and the phase of the wave packet is probed (1150 nm). Based on ab initio calculations, we assign the primary electronically excited state and ascribe the observed coherences (72-78 cm^-1) to contain predominantly Ag-Ag stretch character. We propose specific probe absorption and vibronic coupling at the classical turning points to switch remarkably early on between the different fragmentation pathways. The overall excited state dynamics are fitted to a multiexponential decay with time constants: 0.2-0.4/3-4/19-26/104-161 ps. These findings open new perspectives for further dynamics investigations and possible applications in photocatalysis.

Synthesis, structure, and condensed-phase reactivity of [Ag3(μ3-H)(μ3-BH4)LPh3](BF4) (LPh = bis(diphenylphosphino)amine) with CS2

Quantum chemical calculation of electron ionization mass spectra for general organic and inorganic molecules

We introduce a fully stand-alone version of the Quantum Chemistry Electron Ionization Mass Spectra (QCEIMS) program [S. Grimme, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2013, 52, 6306] allowing efficient simulations for molecules composed of elements with atomic numbers up to Z = 86. The recently developed extended tight-binding semi-empirical method GFN-xTB has been combined with QCEIMS, thereby eliminating dependencies on third-party electronic structure software. Furthermore, for reasonable calculations of ionization potentials, as required by the method, a second tight-binding variant, IPEA-xTB, is introduced here. This novel combination of methods allows the automatic, fast and reasonably accurate computation of electron ionization mass spectra for structurally different molecules across the periodic table. In order to validate and inspect the transferability of the method, we perform large-scale simulations for some representative organic, organometallic, and main-group inorganic systems. Theoretical spectra for 23 molecules are compared directly to experimental data taken from standard databases. For the first time, realistic quantum chemistry based EI-MS for organometallic systems like ferrocene or copper(ii)acetylacetonate are presented. Compared to previously used semiempirical methods, GFN-xTB is faster, more robust, and yields overall higher quality spectra. The partially analysed theoretical reaction and fragmentation mechanisms are chemically reasonable and reveal in unprecedented detail the extreme complexity of high energy gas phase ion chemistry including complicated rearrangement reactions prior to dissociation.
