Microwave spectroscopic observation of distinct electron solid phases in wide quantum wells

Current Flow in the Bubble and Stripe Phases

The spontaneous ordering of spins and charges in geometric patterns is currently under scrutiny in a number of different material systems. A topic of particular interest is the interaction of such ordered phases with itinerant electrons driven by an externally imposed current. It not only provides important information on the charge ordering itself but potentially also allows manipulating the shape and symmetry of the underlying pattern if current flow is strong enough. Unfortunately, conventional transport methods probing the macroscopic resistance suffer from the fact that the voltage drop along the sample edges provides only indirect information on the bulk properties because a complex current distribution is elicited by the inhomogeneous ground state. Here, we promote the use of surface acoustic waves to study these broken-symmetry phases and specifically address the bubble and stripe phases emerging in high-quality two-dimensional electron systems in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures as prototypical examples. When driving a unidirectional current, we find a surprising discrepancy between the sound propagation probing the bulk of the sample and the voltage drop along the sample edges. Our results prove that the current-induced modifications observed in resistive transport measurements are in fact a local phenomenon only, leaving the majority of the sample unaltered. More generally, our findings shed new light on the extent to which these ordered electron phases are impacted by an external current and underline the intrinsic advantages of acoustic measurements for the study of such inhomogeneous phases.

Microwave spectroscopy of the low-filling-factor bilayer electron solid in a wide quantum well

At the low Landau filling factor termination of the fractional quantum Hall effect series, two-dimensional electron systems exhibit an insulating phase that is understood as a form of pinned Wigner solid. Here we use microwave spectroscopy to probe the transition to the insulator for a wide quantum well sample that can support single-layer or bilayer states depending on its overall carrier density. We find that the insulator exhibits a resonance which is characteristic of a bilayer solid. The resonance also reveals a pair of transitions within the solid, which are not accessible to dc transport measurements. As density is biased deeper into the bilayer solid regime, the resonance grows in specific intensity, and the transitions within the insulator disappear. These behaviours are suggestive of a picture of the insulating phase as an emulsion of liquid and solid components.

In 2D electron gases, insulating behaviour at low fractional quantum Hall filling factors is understood by the formation of an electronic Wigner solid. Here, the authors use microwave spectroscopy to evidence an electron liquid–solid mixed phase in bilayer states of GaAs/AlGaAs wide quantum wells.

Gelatin microcapsules for enhanced microwave tumor hyperthermia

Local and rapid heating by microwave (MW) irradiation is important in the clinical treatment of tumors using hyperthermia. We report here a new thermo-seed technique for the highly efficient MW irradiation ablation of tumors in vivo based on gelatin microcapsules. We achieved 100% tumor elimination in a mouse model at an ultralow power of 1.8 W without any side-effects. The results of MTT assays, a hemolysis test and the histological staining of organs indicated that the gelatin microcapsules showed excellent compatibility with the physiological environment. A possible mechanism is proposed for MW hyperthermia using gelatin microcapsules. We also used gelatin microcapsules capped with CdTe quantum dots for in vivo optical imaging. Our study suggests that these microcapsules may have potential applications in imaging-guided cancer treatment.

Fractional quantum Hall effect and Wigner crystal of interacting composite fermions

In two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells, as a function of either tilting the sample in a magnetic field or increasing density, we observe multiple spin-polarization transitions of the fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors ν=4/5 and 5/7. The number of observed transitions provides evidence that these are fractional quantum Hall states of interacting two-flux composite fermions. Moreover, the fact that the reentrant integer quantum Hall effect near ν=4/5 always develops following the transition to full spin polarization of the ν=4/5 fractional quantum Hall state links the reentrant phase to a pinned ferromagnetic Wigner crystal of composite fermions.
