Abstract
Population-based studies of cardiovascular disease markers, such as high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), are crucial. However, studies exploring the effect of metabolic indices on hs-CRP while controlling for confounding variables adequately in middle-aged adults are limited. Using Wave 5 public-use biomarkers data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), we examined the impact of various metabolic indices on hs-CRP in adults aged 32-42, controlling for eight allergic and infectious factors that may elevate hs-CRP levels. We used multiple linear regression analysis to determine which factors predict hs-CRP levels after the log transformation of the dependent variable. The total number of participants was N = 1839 (weighted N = 1,390,763), with a mean age of 38.1 (SD = 2.0) and 46.4% having obesity. Among the controlled variables, recent surgery was the only confounder to significantly predict increased hs-CRP levels [ P = 0.029; exponentiated estimate (EE) = 1.61; 95% confidence interval (Cl), 1.31-1.91]. Notably, current smoking and altered low-density lipoprotein levels did not show a significant association with hs-CRP levels ( P > 0.05). However, a significant increase in hs-CRP levels was observed in females compared with males ( P < 0.001; EE = 1.43; 95% Cl, 1.35-1.51). Similar findings were noted for diabetic HbA1c levels ( P = 0.001; EE = 1.6; 95% CI, 1.42-1.78), high waist circumference ( P = 0.015; EE = 1.25; 95% CI, 1.15-1.35), and stage 3 obesity ( P = 0.006; EE = 7.62; 95% CI, 2.86-12.38). Although not statistically significant, hs-CRP levels exhibited a gradual increase with rising body mass index after controlling for other variables. These findings will improve the clinical application of hs-CRP in predicting coronary artery disease, especially in younger adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Inflammation, lipid signaling, and their interplay are involved in the pathogenesis and development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), while the relationships of composite indices combining inflammation and lipids with CVD remained inexplicit. METHODS AND RESULTS Our study enrolled 8581 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-2018. Logistic regression model was applied to assess the associations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio with CVD prevalence. Potential mediating effects of hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity on significant associations were explored. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to compare diagnostic values of the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio, HDL-C, and hs-CRP. Compared with those in the first quartile of the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio, participants in the fourth quartile presented higher risks of CVD subtypes and total CVD. Each one-unit increment of the log-transformed hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio was associated with a 25 % increase in CVD risk (95 % confidence interval: 1.11, 1.41) with significant uptrends across the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio quartiles. Four metabolic disorders significantly mediated associations of the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio with CVDs. Younger participants were more sensitive to higher hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio with significant interactions in CVD. ROC curves further illustrated the relatively good diagnostic efficacy of the hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio for CVD. CONCLUSION The hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio was a significant risk factor for CVD among US adults, in which hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity played important mediating roles. Early attention to people with elevated hs-CRP/HDL-C ratio would be helpful for CVD risk reduction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the major inflammatory markers, C-reactive protein (CRP), is often elevated in people who have had a heart attack, vascular problems, stroke, or sudden cardiac death. Obesity is associated with higher CRP levels because adipose tissue activates cytokines. Obesity and overweight increase the risk of heart disease, as does an elevated CRP level. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) level with obese normal individuals in North Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study included 50 individuals between the ages of 18 and 50 years who were overweight or obese. The degree of obesity was determined by anthropometric measurements. The patients' height, weight, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, and blood pressure were measured. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay-based CRP level was determined from the blood. RESULTS The mean WC (cm) was significantly higher in the obese (103.42 ± 9.79) than in the overweight (89.00 ± 8.72). The mean hip circumference (cm) was also significantly smaller in the obese group (99.95 ± 8.07) than in the overweight group (131.29 ± 15.82). The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) was significantly more in the obese group (88.37%) than in the overweight group (0.00%). WC (cm), hip circumference (cm), WHR, systolic blood pressure (mmHg), and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg) were not significantly correlated with hs-CRP in overweight and obese participants. CONCLUSION Compared with obesity, hs-CRP was not related to obesity. A relationship between hs-CRP and WC, hip circumference, and WHR was not found.

Abstract
Objectives Refugees may have an increased risk of developing overweight/obesity as they often experience a nutritional transition. Because maintaining good cardiorespiratory fitness can help reduce the negative impact of excess weight on overall health, the objective of this study was to examine whether fitness moderates the relationship between weight status and cardiovascular and mental health outcomes in forcibly displaced individuals living in a Greek refugee camp. Methods A sample of 142 forcibly displaced individuals were recruited. Cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed with the submaximal Åstrand-Rhyming bicycle ergometer test. Blood pressure, blood lipids, blood glucose, and hs-CRP were assessed as physical health outcomes, whereas post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety symptoms, pain, and quality of life were assessed as mental health outcomes. Main and interaction effects were tested via analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs). Results Almost 50% of the participants were overweight/obese, more than 60% presented with very poor fitness levels, and the percentage of participants with very poor fitness levels was particularly high among overweight/obese participants. Whereas overweight/obesity was associated with a less favorable body composition and cardiovascular risk profile, poor fitness was associated with a higher percentage of body fat and a lower percentage of muscle mass. Cardiorespiratory fitness did not moderate the relationship between overweight/obesity and most of the assessed health outcomes. Conclusions Only limited support was found for the applicability of the fit-but-fat concept to our population of forcibly displaced individuals. Public health services should prioritize measures to prevent overweight/obesity and associated diseases in refugee camps. Moreover, efforts are needed to improve the fitness of camp residents via exercise/sport interventions.

Abstract
Inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial function are implicated in the development of obesity and its comorbidities. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of weight loss through calorie restriction on the metabolic profile, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters, and mitochondrial respiration in an obese population. A total of 109 subjects underwent two cycles of a very low-calorie diet alternated with a low-calorie diet (24 weeks). We analyzed biochemical and inflammatory parameters in serum, as well as oxidative stress markers, mRNA antioxidant gene expression, and mitochondrial respiration in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). After the intervention, there was an improvement in both insulin resistance and lipid profiles, including cholesterol subfractions. Weight loss produced a significant reduction in mitochondrial ROSs content and an increase in glutathione levels, coupled with an enhancement in the mRNA expression of antioxidant systems (SOD1, GSR, and CAT). In addition, a significant improvement in basal oxygen consumption, maximal respiration, and ATP production was observed. These findings demonstrate that moderate weight loss can improve insulin resistance, lipid profiles and subfractions, inflammatory and oxidative stress parameters, and mitochondrial respiration. Therefore, we can affirm that dietary intervention can simultaneously achieve significant weight loss and improve metabolic profile and mitochondrial function in obesity.

Abstract
Objective In animal models of obesity, adipocyte-derived versican, and macrophage-derived biglycan play a crucial role in mediating adipose tissue inflammation. The aim was to investigate levels of versican and biglycan in obese children and any potential association with body adipose tissue and hepatosteatosis. Methods Serum levels of versican, biglycan, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) were measured by ELISA. Fat deposition in the liver, spleen, and subcutaneous adipose tissue was calculated using the IDEAL-IQ sequences in magnetic resonance images. Bioimpedance analysis was performed using the Tanita BC 418 MA device. Results The study included 36 obese and 30 healthy children. The age of obese children was 13.6 (7.5-17.9) years, while the age of normal weight children was 13.0 (7.2-17.9) years (p=0.693). Serum levels of versican, hsCRP, and IL-6 were higher in the obese group (p=0.044, p=0.039, p=0.024, respectively), while no significant difference was found in biglycan levels between the groups. There was a positive correlation between versican, biglycan, hsCRP, and IL-6 (r=0.381 p=0.002, r=0.281 p=0.036, rho=0.426 p=0.001, r=0.424 p=0.001, rho=0.305 p=0.017, rho=0.748 p<0.001, respectively). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed higher segmental and global hepatic steatosis in obese children. There was no relationship between hepatic fat content and versican, biglycan, IL-6, and hsCRP. Versican, biglycan, hsCRP, and IL-6 were not predictive of hepatosteatosis. Body fat percentage >32% provided a predictive sensitivity of 81.8% and a specificity of 70.5% for hepatosteatosis [area under the curve (AUC): 0.819, p<0.001]. Similarly, a body mass index standard deviation score >1.75 yielded a predictive sensitivity of 81.8% and a specificity of 69.8% for predicting hepatosteatosis (AUC: 0.789, p<0.001). Conclusion Obese children have higher levels of versican, hsCRP, and IL-6, and more fatty liver than their healthy peers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some studies have shown that an increase in visceral fat is associated with postoperative clinical and oncologic outcomes. However, no studies have used bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to determine the effects of visceral fat on the oncologic outcomes of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative visceral fat area measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis on clinical and oncologic outcomes of colorectal cancer Methods: This study included 203 patients who underwent anthropometric measurements by BIA before surgical treatment for CRC between January 2016 and June 2020. RESULTS According to the cut-off level of VFA by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, 85 (40.5%) patients had a low VFA, and 119 (59.5%) had a high VFA. Multivariate analysis found that preoperative CRP (hazard ratio (HR), 3.882; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.001-15.051; p = 0.050) and nodal stage (HR, 7.996; 95% CI, 1.414-45.209; p = 0.019) were independent prognostic factors for overall survival, while sex (HR, 0.110; 95% CI, 0.013-0.905; p = 0.040), lymphovascular invasion (HR, 3.560; 95% CI, 1.098-11.544; p = 0.034), and VFA (HR, 4.263; 95% CI, 1.280-14.196; p = 0.040) were independent prognostic factors for disease-free survival (DFS). CONCLUSIONS Preoperative VFA measured by BIA had no significant impact on postoperative clinical outcomes and was an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival.

Abstract
This study investigated the effects of folic acid on obesity and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VII 2016–2018), 6394 adults (aged 19–80 years) who met the study criteria were identified and divided into young, middle-aged, and older adult groups. The analysis assessed associations using logistic regression for complex samples. Obesity was measured using body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), and body roundness index (BRI). The odds ratio (OR) of obesity based on BMI were statistically significant for young adults and older participants with low levels of folic acid compared to those with high levels (OR: 1.33 and 1.58, respectively). The OR of obesity based on BMI, WC, WHtR, ABSI, and BRI was significant with low levels of folic acid in middle-aged individuals (OR: 1.36, 1.32, 1.41, 1.29, and 1.47, respectively). Low folate levels were related to higher high-sensitivity CRP levels in middle-aged patients. In conclusion, folate level showed a significant inverse association with obesity and inflammatory biomarkers, especially in the middle-aged group. Further longitudinal or randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm and expand our results.
