Investigation of ultrafast intermediate states during singlet fission in lycopene H-aggregate using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy

The singlet fission process involves the conversion of one singlet excited state into two triplet states, which has significant potential for enhancing the energy utilization efficiency of solar cells. Carotenoid, a typical π conjugated chromophore, exhibits specific aggregate morphologies known to display singlet fission behavior. In this study, we investigate the singlet fission process in lycopene H-aggregates using femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy aided by quantum chemical calculation. The experimental results reveal two reaction pathways that effectively relax the S2 (11Bu+) state populations in lycopene H-aggregates: a monomer-like singlet excited state relaxation pathway through S2 (11Bu+) → 11Bu- → S1 (21Ag-) and a dominant sequential singlet fission reaction pathway involving the S2 (11Bu+) state, followed by S* state, a triplet pair state [1(TT)], eventually leading to a long lifetime triplet state T1. Importantly, the presence of both anionic and cationic fingerprint Raman peaks in the S* state is indicative of a substantial charge-transfer character.

Decoupling excitons from high-frequency vibrations in organic molecules

The coupling of excitons in π-conjugated molecules to high-frequency vibrational modes, particularly carbon-carbon stretch modes (1,000-1,600 cm-1) has been thought to be unavoidable1,2. These high-frequency modes accelerate non-radiative losses and limit the performance of light-emitting diodes, fluorescent biomarkers and photovoltaic devices. Here, by combining broadband impulsive vibrational spectroscopy, first-principles modelling and synthetic chemistry, we explore exciton-vibration coupling in a range of π-conjugated molecules. We uncover two design rules that decouple excitons from high-frequency vibrations. First, when the exciton wavefunction has a substantial charge-transfer character with spatially disjoint electron and hole densities, we find that high-frequency modes can be localized to either the donor or acceptor moiety, so that they do not significantly perturb the exciton energy or its spatial distribution. Second, it is possible to select materials such that the participating molecular orbitals have a symmetry-imposed non-bonding character and are, thus, decoupled from the high-frequency vibrational modes that modulate the π-bond order. We exemplify both these design rules by creating a series of spin radical systems that have very efficient near-infrared emission (680-800 nm) from charge-transfer excitons. We show that these systems have substantial coupling to vibrational modes only below 250 cm-1, frequencies that are too low to allow fast non-radiative decay. This enables non-radiative decay rates to be suppressed by nearly two orders of magnitude in comparison to π-conjugated molecules with similar bandgaps. Our results show that losses due to coupling to high-frequency modes need not be a fundamental property of these systems.

Elucidating Singlet-Fission-Born Multiexciton Dynamics via Molecular Engineering: A Dilution Principle Extended to Quintet Triplet Pair

Multiexciton in singlet exciton fission represents a critical quantum state with significant implications for both solar cell applications and quantum information science. Two distinct fields of interest explore contrasting phenomena associated with the geminate triplet pair: one focusing on the persistence of long-lived correlation and the other emphasizing efficient decorrelation. Despite the pivotal nature of multiexciton processes, a comprehensive understanding of their dependence on the structural and spin properties of materials is currently lacking in experimental realizations. To address this gap in knowledge, molecular engineering was employed to modify the TIPS-tetracene structures, enabling an investigation of the structure-property relationships in spin-related multiexciton processes. In lieu of the time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance technique, two time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopies were implemented for quantitative analysis of spin-dependent multiexciton dynamics. The utilization of absorption and fluorescence signals as complementary optical readouts, in the presence of a magnetic field, provided crucial insights into geminate triplet pair dynamics. These insights encompassed the duration of multiexciton correlation and the involvement of the spin state in multiexciton decorrelation. Furthermore, simulations based on our kinetic models suggested a role for quintet dilution in multiexciton dynamics, surpassing the singlet dilution principle established by the Merrifield model. The integration of intricate model structures and time-resolved magneto-optical spectroscopies served to explicitly elucidate the interplay between structural and spin properties in multiexciton processes. This comprehensive approach not only contributes to the fundamental understanding of these processes but also aligns with and reinforces previous experimental studies of solid states and theoretical assessments.

Leveraging Charge-Transfer Interactions in Through-Space-Coupled Pentacene Dendritic Oligomer for Singlet Exciton Fission

Singlet exciton fission in organic chromophores has received much attention during the past decade. Inspired by numerous spectroscopic studies in the solid state, there have been vigorous efforts to study singlet exciton fission dynamics in covalently bonded oligomers, which aims to investigate underlying mechanisms of this intriguing process in simplified model systems. In terms of through-space orbital interactions, however, most of covalently bonded pentacene oligomers studied so far fall into weakly interacting systems since they manifest chain-like structures based on various (non)conjugated linkers. Therefore, it remains as a compelling question to answer how through-space interactions in the solid state intervene this photophysical process since it is hypersensitive to displacements and orientations between neighboring chromophores. Herein, as one of experimental studies to answer this question, we introduced a tight-packing dendritic structure whose mesityl-pentacene constituents are coupled via moderate through-space orbital interactions. Based on the comparison with a suitably controlled dendritic structure, which is in a weak coupling regime, important mechanistic viewpoints are tackled such as configurational mixings between singlet, charge-transfer, and triplet pair states and the role of chromophore multiplication. We underscore that our through-space-coupled dendritic oligomer in a quasi-intermediate coupling regime provides a hint on the interplay of multiconfigurational excited-states, which might have drawn complexity in singlet exciton fission kinetics throughout numerous solid-state morphologies.

From a one-mode to a multi-mode understanding of conical intersection mediated ultrafast organic photochemical reactions

This review discusses how ultrafast organic photochemical reactions are controlled by conical intersections, highlighting that decay to the ground-state at multiple points of the intersection space results in their multi-mode character.

Probing Through-Bond and Through-Space Interactions in Singlet Fission-Based Pentacene Dimers

Interchromophoric interactions such as Coulombic coupling and exchange interactions are crucial to the functional properties of numerous π-conjugated systems. Here, we use magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy to investigate interchromophoric interactions in singlet fission relevant pentacene dimers. Using a simple analytical model, we outline a general relationship between the geometry of pentacene dimers and their calculated MCD response. We analyze experimental MCD spectra of different covalently bridged pentacene dimers to reveal how the molecular structure of the "bridge" affects the magnitude of through-space Coulombic and through-bond exchange interactions in the system. Our results show that through-bond interactions are significant in dimers with conjugated molecules as bridging units and these interactions promote the overall electronic coupling in the system. Our generalized approach paves the way for the application of MCD in investigating interchromophoric interactions across a range of π-conjugated systems.

Parallel triplet formation pathways in a singlet fission material

Harvesting long-lived free triplets in high yields by utilizing organic singlet fission materials can be the cornerstone for increasing photovoltaic efficiencies potentially. However, except for polyacenes, which are the most studied systems in the singlet fission field, spin-entangled correlated triplet pairs and free triplets born through singlet fission are relatively poorly characterized. By utilizing transient absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy in supramolecular aggregate thin films consisting of Hamilton-receptor-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives, we show that photoexcitation gives rise to the formation of spin-0 correlated triplet pair ¹(TT) from the lower Frenkel exciton state. The existence of ¹(TT) is proved through faint Herzberg-Teller emission that is enabled by vibronic coupling and correlated with an artifact-free triplet-state photoinduced absorption in the near-infrared. Surprisingly, transient electron paramagnetic resonance reveals that long-lived triplets are produced through classical intersystem crossing instead of ¹(TT) dissociation, with the two pathways in competition. Moreover, comparison of the triplet-formation dynamics in J-like and H-like thin films with the same energetics reveals that spin-orbit coupling mediated intersystem crossing persists in both. However, ¹(TT) only forms in the J-like film, pinpointing the huge impact of intermolecular coupling geometry on singlet fission dynamics.

Probing the electronic structure and photophysics of thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole derivatives in solution

Diketopyrrolopyrroles are a popular class of electron-withdrawing unit in optoelectronic materials. When combined with electron donating side-chain functional groups such as thiophenes, they form a very broad class of donor–acceptor molecules: thiophene–diketopyrrolopyrroles (TDPPs). Despite their widescale use in biosensors and photovoltaic materials, studies have yet to establish the important link between the electronic structure of the specific TDPP and the critical optical properties. To bridge this gap, ultrafast transient absorption with 22 fs time resolution has been used to explore the photophysics of three prototypical TDPP molecules: a monomer, dimer and polymer in solution. Interpretation of experimental data was assisted by a recent high-level theoretical study, and additional density functional theory calculations. These studies show that the photophysics of these molecular prototypes under visible photoexcitation are determined by just two excited electronic states, having very different electronic characters (one is optically bright, the other dark), their relative energetic ordering and the timescales for internal conversion from one to the other and/or to the ground state. The underlying difference in electronic structure alters the branching between these excited states and their associated dynamics. In turn, these factors dictate the fluorescence quantum yields, which are shown to vary by ∼1–2 orders of magnitude across the TDPP prototypes investigated here. The fast non-radiative transfer of molecules from the bright to dark states is mediated by conical intersections. Remarkably, wavepacket signals in the measured transient absorption data carry signatures of the nuclear motions that enable mixing of the electronic-nuclear wavefunction and facilitate non-adiabatic coupling between the bright and dark states.

Singlet Fission Materials for Photovoltaics: from Small Molecules to Macromolecules

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a singlet state splits into two triplet states. Materials that enable SF have attracted great attention in the last decade, mainly stemming from the potential of overcoming the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit in photoenergy conversion. In the past decade, a large number of new molecules exhibiting SF have been explored and many devices based on SF materials have been studied, though the mechanistic understanding is still obscure. This review focuses on the recent developments of SF materials, including small molecules, oligomers and polymers. The molecular design strategies and related mechanisms of SF are discussed. Then the dynamics of charge transfer and energy transfer between SF materials and other materials are introduced. Further, we discuss the progresses of implementing SF in photovoltaics. It is hoped that a comprehensive understanding to the SF materials, devices and mechanism may pave a new way for the design of next generation photovoltaics. This article is protected by copyright. Optimizing the Thermodynamics and Kinetics of the Triplet-Pair Dissociation in Donor-Acceptor Copolymers for Intramolecular Singlet Fission

Singlet fission (SF) is a two-step process in which a singlet splits into two triplets throughout the so-called correlated triplet-pair (¹TT) state. Intramolecular SF (iSF) materials, in particular, have attracted growing interest as they can be easily implemented in single-junction solar cells and boost their power conversion efficiency. Still, the potential of iSF materials such as polymers and oligomers for photovoltaic applications has been partially hindered by their ability to go beyond the ¹TT intermediate and generate free triplets, whose mechanism remains poorly understood. In this work, the main aspects governing the ¹TT dissociation in donor-acceptor copolymers and the key features that optimize this process are exposed. First, we show that both thermodynamics and kinetics play a crucial role in the intramolecular triplet-pair separation and second, we uncover the inherent flexibility of the donor unit as the fundamental ingredient to optimize them simultaneously. Overall, these results provide a better understanding of the intramolecular ¹TT dissociation process and establish a new paradigm for the development of novel iSF active materials.

Enhanced charge-transfer induced by conduction band electrons in aluminum-doped zinc oxide/molecule/Ag sandwich structures observed by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy

In the semiconductor/molecule/metal system, enhancing the efficiency of the charge-transfer (CT) plays a pivotal role in improving the sensitivity of semiconductor-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). In this work, use of SERS for detection of an enhanced CT in a chemically-etched Al-doped ZnO (AZO), 4-mercaptopyridine (MPy) molecule, and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) (AZO/MPy/Ag) sandwich structure is reported. A series of CT routes are proposed in the energy level diagram of AZO/MPy/Ag assemblies under the excitation line at 633 nm. Very interestingly, for the first of its kind, a significant CT route from the conduction band (CB) of AZO to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of MPy molecule is detected. This route can remarkably improve the degree of CT in the AZO/MPy/Ag system by about 48% compared with that of the ZnO/MPy/Ag system. Furthermore, the uniquely enhanced CT route is also further confirmed by alternative probe molecules like p-aminothiophenol (PATP) and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA). The discovery of this extra CT route will inevitably play an irreplaceable role in SERS enhancement through its participating in the CT enhancement mechanism.

Quantum dynamics simulation of intramolecular singlet fission in covalently linked tetracene dimer

In this work, we study singlet fission in tetracene para-dimers, covalently linked by a phenyl group. In contrast to most previous studies, we account for the full quantum dynamics of the combined excitonic and vibrational system. For our simulations, we choose a numerically unbiased representation of the molecule's wave function, enabling us to compare with experiments, exhibiting good agreement. Having access to the full wave function allows us to study in detail the post-quench dynamics of the excitons. Here, one of our main findings is the identification of a time scale t₀ ≈ 35 fs dominated by coherent dynamics. It is within this time scale that the larger fraction of the singlet fission yield is generated. We also report on a reduced number of phononic modes that play a crucial role in the energy transfer between excitonic and vibrational systems. Notably, the oscillation frequency of these modes coincides with the observed electronic coherence time t₀. We extend our investigations by also studying the dependency of the dynamics on the excitonic energy levels that, for instance, can be experimentally tuned by means of the solvent polarity. Here, our findings indicate that the singlet fission yield can be doubled, while the electronic coherence time t₀ is mainly unaffected.

Influence of non-adiabatic effects on linear absorption spectra in the condensed phase: Methylene blue

Modeling linear absorption spectra of solvated chromophores is highly challenging as contributions are present both from coupling of the electronic states to nuclear vibrations and from solute-solvent interactions. In systems where excited states intersect in the Condon region, significant non-adiabatic contributions to absorption line shapes can also be observed. Here, we introduce a robust approach to model linear absorption spectra accounting for both environmental and non-adiabatic effects from first principles. This model parameterizes a linear vibronic coupling (LVC) Hamiltonian directly from energy gap fluctuations calculated along molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories of the chromophore in solution, accounting for both anharmonicity in the potential and direct solute-solvent interactions. The resulting system dynamics described by the LVC Hamiltonian are solved exactly using the thermalized time-evolving density operator with orthogonal polynomials algorithm (T-TEDOPA). The approach is applied to the linear absorption spectrum of methylene blue in water. We show that the strong shoulder in the experimental spectrum is caused by vibrationally driven population transfer between the bright S₁ and the dark S₂ states. The treatment of the solvent environment is one of many factors that strongly influence the population transfer and line shape; accurate modeling can only be achieved through the use of explicit quantum mechanical solvation. The efficiency of T-TEDOPA, combined with LVC Hamiltonian parameterizations from MD, leads to an attractive method for describing a large variety of systems in complex environments from first principles.

Towards multistate multimode landscapes in singlet fission of pentacene: the dual role of charge-transfer states

Singlet fission duplicates triplet excitons for improving light harvesting efficiency. The presence of the interaction between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom complicates the interpretation of correlated triplet pairs. We report a quantum chemistry study on the significance and subtleties of multistate and multimode pathways in forming triplet pair states of the pentacene dimer through a six-state vibronic-coupling Hamiltonian derived from many-electron adiabatic wavefunctions of an ab initio density matrix renormalization group. The resulting spin values of the singlet manifolds on each pentacene center are computed, and the varying spin nature can be distinguished clearly with respect to dimer stacking and vibronic progression. Our monomer spin assignments reveal the coexistence of both lower-lying weak and higher-lying strong charge transfer states which interact vibronically with the triplet pair state, providing important implications for its generation and separation occurring in vibronic regions. This work conveys the importance of the many-electron process requiring close low-lying singlet manifolds to determine the subtle fission details, and represents an important step for understanding vibronically resolved spin states and conversions underlying efficient singlet fission.

Pentacene-Bridge Interactions in an Axially Chiral Binaphthyl Pentacene Dimer

Molecular chirality can be exploited as a sensitive reporter of the nature of intra- and interchromophore interactions in π-conjugated systems. In this report, we designed an intramolecular singlet fission (iSF)-based pentacene dimer with an axially chiral binaphthyl bridge (2,2'-(2,2'-dimethoxy-[1,1'-binaphthalene]-3,3'-diyl) n-octyl-di-isopropyl silylethynyl dipentacene, BNBP) to utilize its chiroptical response as a marker of iSF chromophore-bridge-chromophore (SFC-β-SFC) interactions. The axial chirality of the bridge enforces significant one-handed excitonic coupling of the pentacene monomer units; as such, BNBP exhibits significant chiroptical response in the ground and excited states. We analyzed the chiroptical response of BNBP using the exciton coupling method and quadratic response density functional theory calculations to reveal that higher energy singlet transitions in BNBP involve significant delocalization of the electronic density on the bridging binaphthyl group. Our results highlight the promising application of chiroptical techniques to investigate the nature of SFC-β-SFC interactions that impact singlet fission dynamics.

Temperature Tuning of Coherent Mixing between States Driving Singlet Fission in a Spiro-Fused Terrylenediimide Dimer

The excited-state dynamics of a spiro-fused terrylene-3,4:11,12-bis(dicarboximide) (TDI) dimer (sTDI2) in toluene and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (mTHF) were investigated as a function of temperature using femtosecond- and nanosecond-transient absorption spectroscopy, as well as two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. The spiro conjugation and the corresponding geometry of this compound guarantee a short intermonomer distance along with a partial orbital overlap between the orthogonal TDI π-electron systems, providing electronic coupling between the TDIs. Photoexcitation of sTDI2 in toluene, a low dielectric solvent, at 295 K, results in the ultrafast formation of a state composed of a coherent mixture of singlet 1(S1S0), multiexciton 1(T1T1), and charge-transfer (CT) electronic characters. This mixed species decays to decorrelated triplet states on the nanosecond timescale, completing the process of intramolecular singlet fission (SF) in sTDI2. Upon decreasing the temperature from 295 to 200 K, the contribution of the 1(T1T1) state to the mixed species decreases concurrently with an increase in the CT state character. We attribute this behavior to the variation in the vibrational energy level alignment between the states comprising the mixture due to changes in the temperature and hence the local dielectric environment. In contrast, photoexcitation of sTDI2 in more polar mTHF at 295 K results in the formation of a mixed singlet and CT state before undergoing symmetry-breaking charge separation, owing to the increased stabilization of the CT state in the medium. However, in glassy mTHF at 85 K, photoexcited sTDI2 exhibits discernible multiexciton character, comparable to that observed in toluene at 200 K, which we rationalize by the similarity of the dielectric constants under these two sets of conditions. These observations of mixed states of varying diabatic contributions over the range of experimental conditions show that the temperature and the static dielectric constant can directly control the composition of the electronically mixed excited state of sTDI2 and thus the fate of the SF process.

Tracking Ultrafast Structural Dynamics by Time-Domain Raman Spectroscopy

In traditional Raman spectroscopy, narrow-band light is irradiated on a sample, and its inelastic scattering, i.e., Raman scattering, is detected. The energy difference between the Raman scattering and the incident light corresponds to the vibrational energy of the molecule, providing the Raman spectrum that contains rich information about the molecular-level properties of the materials. On the other hand, by using ultrashort optical pulses, it is possible to induce Raman-active coherent nuclear motion of the molecule and to observe the molecular vibration in real time. Moreover, this time-domain Raman measurement can be combined with femtosecond photoexcitation, triggering chemical changes, which enables tracking ultrafast structural dynamics in a form of “time-resolved” time-domain Raman spectroscopy, also known as time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy. With the advent of stable, ultrashort laser pulse sources, time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy now realizes high sensitivity and a wide detection frequency window from THz to 3000 cm^–1, and has seen success in unveiling the molecular mechanisms underlying the efficient functions of complex molecular systems. In this Perspective, we overview the present status of time-domain Raman spectroscopy, particularly focusing on its application to the study of femtosecond structural dynamics. We first explain the principle and a brief history of time-domain Raman spectroscopy and then describe the apparatus and recent applications to the femtosecond dynamics of complex molecular systems, including proteins, molecular assemblies, and functional materials. We also discuss future directions for time-domain Raman spectroscopy, which has reached a status allowing a wide range of applications.

Nuclear dynamics of singlet exciton fission in pentacene single crystals

Singlet exciton fission (SEF) is a key process for developing efficient optoelectronic devices. An aspect rarely probed directly, yet with tremendous impact on SEF properties, is the nuclear structure and dynamics involved in this process. Here, we directly observe the nuclear dynamics accompanying the SEF process in single crystal pentacene using femtosecond electron diffraction. The data reveal coherent atomic motions at 1 THz, incoherent motions, and an anisotropic lattice distortion representing the polaronic character of the triplet excitons. Combining molecular dynamics simulations, time-dependent density-functional theory, and experimental structure factor analysis, the coherent motions are identified as collective sliding motions of the pentacene molecules along their long axis. Such motions modify the excitonic coupling between adjacent molecules. Our findings reveal that long-range motions play a decisive part in the electronic decoupling of the electronically correlated triplet pairs and shed light on why SEF occurs on ultrafast time scales.

Symmetry-Breaking Enhanced Herzberg-Teller Effect with Brominated Polyacenes

Molecular symmetry is vital to the selection rule of vibrationally resolved electronic transition, particularly when the nuclear dependence of electronic wave function is explicitly treated by including Franck-Condon (FC) factor, Franck-Condon/Herzberg-Teller (FC/HT) interference, and Herzberg-Teller (HT) coupling. Our present study investigated the light absorption spectra of highly symmetric tetracene, pentacene, and hexacene molecules of point-group D_2h, as well as their monobrominated derivatives with a lower C_s symmetry. It was found that the symmetry-breaking monobromination allows more vibrational normal modes and their pairs to contribute to FC/HT interference and HT coupling, respectively. Through a projection of a molecule's vibrational normal modes to its irreducible representations, a linear relationship between the FC/HT intensity to the polyacene's size was deduced alongside a quadratic dependence of the HT intensity. Both theoretically derived correlations were well justified by our numerical simulations, which also demonstrated an approximately 20% improvement on the agreement with experimental line shape if the HT theory is adopted to replace the FC approximation. Moreover, for these low-symmetry monobrominated polyacenes, the FC intensity was even weaker than its FC/HT and HT counterparts at some excitation energies, making the HT theory imperative to decipher vibronic coupling, a fundamental driving force behind numerous chemical, biological, and photophysical processes.

Probing intramolecular vibronic coupling through vibronic-state imaging

Vibronic coupling is a central issue in molecular spectroscopy. Here we investigate vibronic coupling within a single pentacene molecule in real space by imaging the spatial distribution of single-molecule electroluminescence via highly localized excitation of tunneling electrons in a controlled plasmonic junction. The observed two-spot orientation for certain vibronic-state imaging is found to be evidently different from the purely electronic 0–0 transition, rotated by 90°, which reflects the change in the transition dipole orientation from along the molecular short axis to the long axis. Such a change reveals the occurrence of strong vibronic coupling associated with a large Herzberg–Teller contribution, going beyond the conventional Franck–Condon picture. The emergence of large vibration-induced transition charges oscillating along the long axis is found to originate from the strong dynamic perturbation of the anti-symmetric vibration on those carbon atoms with large transition density populations during electronic transitions.

Vibronic coupling is a key feature of molecular electronic transitions, but its visualization in real space is an experimental challenge. Here the authors, using scanning tunneling microscopy induced luminescence, resolve the effect of vibronic coupling with different modes on the electron distributions in real space in a single pentacene molecule.

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy of the photodecarbonylation of photo-oxadibenzocyclooctyne (photo-ODIBO)

The ultrafast dynamics of photo-OxaDiBenzocycloOctyne (photo-ODIBO) photo-dissociation was studied using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Steady-state UV-Vis, time-dependent density functional theory, and 350 nm and 321 nm transient absorption studies are reported. Photo-ODIBO excitation with 321 nm and 350 nm light-induced photodecarbonylation of the cyclopropenone functional group results in the formation of ODIBO. The presence of the photoproduct was confirmed by the results of steady-state photolysis experiments and the observation of absorption signatures of ODIBO in the photo-ODIBO transient absorption spectra. Analysis of the latter revealed the underlying photochemical mechanisms and associated time constants, following excitation of the samples. The dynamics show a multi-exponential decay process, following the dissociation of photo-ODIBO into an excited state of the photoproduct ODIBO within <294 fs after 321 nm excitation. 350 nm excitation, on the other hand, is shown to produce ground state ODIBO via an intermediate species. Additional transient absorption measurements were performed directly on the photoproduct ODIBO to help distinguish spectral signatures associated with these processes.

Unconventional singlet fission materials

Singlet fission (SF) is a photophysical downconversion pathway, in which a singlet excitation transforms into two triplet excited states. As such, it constitutes an exciton multiplication generation process, which is currently at the focal point for future integration into solar energy conversion devices. Beyond this, various other exciting applications were proposed, including quantum cryptography or organic light emitting diodes. Also, the mechanistic understanding evolved rapidly during the last year. Unfortunately, the number of suitable SF-chromophores is still limited. This is per se problematic, considering the wide range of envisaged applicability. With that in mind, we emphasize uncommon SF-scaffolds and outline requirements as well as strategies to expand the chromophore pool of SF-materials.

Simulating Quantum Vibronic Dynamics at Finite Temperatures With Many Body Wave Functions at 0 K

For complex molecules, nuclear degrees of freedom can act as an environment for the electronic “system” variables, allowing the theory and concepts of open quantum systems to be applied. However, when molecular system-environment interactions are non-perturbative and non-Markovian, numerical simulations of the complete system-environment wave function become necessary. These many body dynamics can be very expensive to simulate, and extracting finite-temperature results—which require running and averaging over many such simulations—becomes especially challenging. Here, we present numerical simulations that exploit a recent theoretical result that allows dissipative environmental effects at finite temperature to be extracted efficiently from a single, zero-temperature wave function simulation. Using numerically exact time-dependent variational matrix product states, we verify that this approach can be applied to vibronic tunneling systems and provide insight into the practical problems lurking behind the elegance of the theory, such as the rapidly growing numerical demands that can appear for high temperatures over the length of computations.

Matrix Product State Simulations of Non-Equilibrium Steady States and Transient Heat Flows in the Two-Bath Spin-Boson Model at Finite Temperatures

Simulating the non-perturbative and non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems is a very challenging many body problem, due to the need to evolve both the system and its environments on an equal footing. Tensor network and matrix product states (MPS) have emerged as powerful tools for open system models, but the numerical resources required to treat finite-temperature environments grow extremely rapidly and limit their applications. In this study we use time-dependent variational evolution of MPS to explore the striking theory of Tamascelli et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2019, 123, 090402.) that shows how finite-temperature open dynamics can be obtained from zero temperature, i.e., pure wave function, simulations. Using this approach, we produce a benchmark dataset for the dynamics of the Ohmic spin-boson model across a wide range of coupling strengths and temperatures, and also present a detailed analysis of the numerical costs of simulating non-equilibrium steady states, such as those emerging from the non-perturbative coupling of a qubit to baths at different temperatures. Despite ever-growing resource requirements, we find that converged non-perturbative results can be obtained, and we discuss a number of recent ideas and numerical techniques that should allow wide application of MPS to complex open quantum systems.

Singlet Fission Dynamics in Tetracene Single Crystals Probed by Polarization-Dependent Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy

The exact mechanism of endothermic singlet fission in crystalline polyacene remains to be clarified. It has been elusive whether the excess energy of vibrational hot states and the upper branch of Davydov splitting is important for the energy compensation. Here, we probe the excited-state specified singlet fission dynamics in tetracene single crystals by polarization-dependent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES). While a major spectral transfer with a characteristic lifetime of 86 ps is observed to be largely independent of the excitation energy due to formation of the spatially separated triplet pairs (¹(T···T)), the excitation-energy dependent subpicosecond dynamics show marked differences for different states probed, implying the possible involvement of a coherently formed triplet pair state (¹(TT)). Analysis of coherent vibrational modes suggests the coupling to high energy modes may offset the energy difference between singlet and triplet pair states. Moreover, the beating map of the low frequency mode indicates a vibrational hot state violating the aggregation behavior of Davydov exciton, which can be explained as a resonance of the ¹(TT) state. These results suggest that the coherent vibronic mixing between local excitation and triplet pair states is essential for the singlet fission dynamics in molecule aggregates.

Exploiting Machine Learning to Efficiently Predict Multidimensional Optical Spectra in Complex Environments

The excited-state dynamics of chromophores in complex environments determine a range of vital biological and energy capture processes. Time-resolved, multidimensional optical spectroscopies provide a key tool to investigate these processes. Although theory has the potential to decode these spectra in terms of the electronic and atomistic dynamics, the need for large numbers of excited-state electronic structure calculations severely limits first-principles predictions of multidimensional optical spectra for chromophores in the condensed phase. Here, we leverage the locality of chromophore excitations to develop machine learning models to predict the excited-state energy gap of chromophores in complex environments for efficiently constructing linear and multidimensional optical spectra. By analyzing the performance of these models, which span a hierarchy of physical approximations, across a range of chromophore-environment interaction strengths, we provide strategies for the construction of machine learning models that greatly accelerate the calculation of multidimensional optical spectra from first principles.

Singlet Fission in Carbene-Derived Diradicaloids

Herein, we present a new class of singlet fission (SF) materials based on diradicaloids of carbene scaffolds, namely cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (CAACs). Our modular approach allows the tuning of two key SF criteria: the steric factor and the diradical character. In turn, we modified the energy landscapes of excited states in a systematic manner to accommodate the needs for SF. We report the first example of intermolecular SF in solution by dimer self-assembly at cryogenic temperatures.

Identification of a receiver triplet state in the ultrafast intersystem crossing of carbonylpyrenes

The near-unity triplet quantum yield of photoexcited carbonyl functionalized pyrenes is theoretically investigated. The estimated energetics of singlet-triplet manifolds and relevant spin-orbit coupling parameters strongly suggest triplet state formation via the S₁→ T₄/T₅ pathway. Quantum wavepacket dynamics of triplet manifolds within the linear vibronic coupling approach reveal that the receiver triplet state would undergo rapid internal conversion decay to the lower triplet state(s), facilitating efficient triplet generation by minimizing the reverse intersystem crossing possibilities. On the basis of these results, a unified mechanism is proposed to describe the ultrafast intersystem crossing process in these molecules.

Singlet fission in a hexacene dimer: energetics dictate dynamics

Singlet fission (SF) is an exciton multiplication process with the potential to raise the efficiency limit of single junction solar cells from 33% to up to 45%. Most chromophores generally undergo SF as solid-state crystals. However, when such molecules are covalently coupled, the dimers can be used as model systems to study fundamental photophysical dynamics where a singlet exciton splits into two triplet excitons within individual molecules. Here we report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of singlet fission of a hexacene dimer. Comparing the hexacene dimer to analogous tetracene and pentacene dimers reveals that excess exoergicity slows down singlet fission, similar to what is observed in molecular crystals. Conversely, the lower triplet energy of hexacene results in an increase in the rate of triplet pair recombination, following the energy gap law for radiationless transitions. These results point to design rules for singlet fission chromophores: the energy gap between singlet and triplet pair should be minimal, and the gap between triplet pair and ground state should be large.

We report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of highly exoergic singlet fission in a hexacene dimer revealing exciton dynamics that follow the energy gap law.
