Nickel isotopic evidence for late-stage accretion of Mercury-like differentiated planetary embryos

Mesoarchean Microbial Cd, Ba, and Ni Cycling: Evidence for Photosynthesis in Pongola Group Stromatolites through Novel Stable Isotopes and High-Resolution Trace Element Maps

Nontraditional stable isotopes of bioactive metals emerged as novel proxies for reconstructing the biogeochemical cycling of metals, which serve as cofactors in major metabolic pathways. The fractionation of metal isotopes between ambient fluid and microorganisms is ultimately recorded in authigenic minerals, such as carbonates, which makes them potentially more reliable than standard biomarkers in organic matter. Stromatolitic carbonates are geochemical archives that allow for the study of the long-term interplay of the biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere through deep time, with the unique potential to investigate early life environments and the evolution of the metallome. The present study uses stromatolites from the ∼2.95-billion-year-old Pongola Supergroup (S. Africa) as a field laboratory for combined in situ trace metal mapping and layer-specific, novel stable metal isotope compositions to infer early Earth microbial metal cycling via phototrophic and chemo-litho-autotrophic metabolisms. Quantitative in situ trace element maps reveal intrinsic biosedimentary enrichments of nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) in stromatolitic laminae. In contrast, barium (Ba) shows a more homogeneous distribution. Authigenic carbonates from pristine stromatolite laminae show distinct δ138Ba and δ112Cd fractionation above detrital background and bulk silicate Earth values, but opposing correlation with trace metal concentrations. Authigenic δ60Ni values overlap with Mesoarchean diamictite compositions. Nickel isotopic compositions in authigenic stromatolitic carbonates, potentially a new proxy for methanogenic metal uptake, do not show any proof of the presence of this metabolism in the samples of this study. Meanwhile, Cd isotopic compositions in authigenic carbonates follow typical Rayleigh-type isotope fractionation; that is, the isotopic composition of Cd evolves to heavy values close to modern surface compositions. Correlations of δ112Cd with the micronutrients copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), and P, at positively fractionated carbon (C) isotopes (δ13C ∼+2‰), argue for active photosynthesis in the Pongola microbial habitat. We show that Ba isotopes can be used to infer carbonate precipitation rates similar to modern microbial carbonates. Thus, the combination of Cd and Ni isotopes has the unique potential as novel isotope biomarkers for the biochemical sedimentary record of early Earth where traditional lipid biomarkers are not applicable due to the incomplete preservation of organic matter.

Early planetesimal differentiation and late accretion shaped Earth's nitrogen budget

The relative roles of protoplanetary differentiation versus late accretion in establishing Earth's life-essential volatile element inventory are being hotly debated. To address this issue, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate nitrogen (N) isotope fractionation during Earth's accretion and differentiation. We find that segregation of an iron core would enrich heavy N isotopes in the residual silicate, while evaporation within a H2-dominated nebular gas produces an enrichment of light N isotope in the planetesimals. The combined effect of early planetesimal evaporation followed by core formation enriches the bulk silicate Earth in light N isotopes. If Earth is comprised primarily of enstatite-chondrite-like material, as indicated by other isotope systems, then late accretion of carbonaceous-chondrite-like material must contribute ~ 30-100% of the N budget in present-day bulk silicate Earth. However, mass balance using N isotope constraints shows that the late veneer contributes only a limited amount of other volatile elements (e.g., H, S, and C) to Earth.

Chalcogen isotopes reveal limited volatile contribution from late veneer to Earth

The origin of Earth's volatile elements is highly debated. Comparing the chalcogen isotope ratios in the bulk silicate Earth (BSE) to those of its possible building blocks, chondritic meteorites, allows constraints on the origin of Earth's volatiles; however, these comparisons are complicated by potential isotopic fractionation during protoplanetary differentiation, which largely remains poorly understood. Using first-principles calculations, we find that core-mantle differentiation does not notably fractionate selenium and tellurium isotopes, while equilibrium evaporation from early planetesimals would enrich selenium and tellurium in heavy isotopes in the BSE. The sulfur, selenium, and tellurium isotopic signatures of the BSE reveal that protoplanetary differentiation plays a key role in establishing most of Earth's volatile elements, and a late veneer does not substantially contribute to the BSE's volatile inventory.

Active methanogenesis during the melting of Marinoan snowball Earth

Geological evidence indicates that the deglaciation of Marinoan snowball Earth ice age (~635 Myr ago) was associated with intense continental weathering, recovery of primary productivity, transient marine euxinia, and potentially extensive CH₄ emission. It is proposed that the deglacial CH₄ emissions may have provided positive feedbacks for ice melting and global warming. However, the origin of CH₄ remains unclear. Here we report Ni isotopes (δ⁶⁰Ni) and Yttrium-rare earth element (YREE) compositions of syndepositional pyrites from the upper most Nantuo Formation (equivalent deposits of the Marinoan glaciation), South China. The Nantuo pyrite displays anti-correlations between Ni concentration and δ⁶⁰Ni, and between Ni concentration and Sm/Yb ratio, suggesting mixing between Ni in seawater and Ni from methanogens. Our study indicates active methanogenesis during the termination of Marinoan snowball Earth. This suggests that methanogenesis was fueled by methyl sulfides produced in sulfidic seawater during the deglacial recovery of marine primary productivity.
