Achiral organoiodine-functionalized helical polyisocyanides for multiple asymmetric dearomative oxidations

Controlled synthesis of β-cyclodextrin-based starlike helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) and its application in chiral resolution

In an effort to expand the diversity of helical polymers exhibiting intricate structures, a strategy for the precise fabrication of β-cyclodextrin-based star polymers adorned with helical poly(phenyl isocyanide) (PPI) arms has been successfully realized through the integration of isocyanide polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). An elegant β-cyclodextrin embellished with 7 Pd(II) complexes on one side and 14 bromine groups on the other side, denoted as ((Pd(II))7-CD-(Br)14), was initially synthesized. Subsequently, the (PPI)7-CD-(Br)14 was synthesized through the polymerization of the phenyl isocyanide monomer initiated with (Pd(II))7-CD-(Br)14. Finally, starlike PPI was obtained by ATRP of 1,2-diacrylyl ethane initiated via the macro-initiator of (PPI)7-CD-(Br)14. Circular dichroism measurement analysis indicated that the obtained starlike PPI exhibited a consistent helical conformation with a preferred handedness, and it was revealed that the helical structure of starlike PPI originated from the PPI backbone, rather than intermolecular aggregation in solutions. Furthermore, the starlike PPI demonstrated excellent efficacy in the chiral resolution of racemic compounds, achieving an enantiomeric excess (e.e.) of 92 % for threonine racemates when used as a chiral resolution agent.

Thermal Activation of Asymmetry Amplification Effects in Helical Polymer-Metal Complexes

Dynamic helical polymers such as poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) exhibit different asymmetry amplification effects, e.g., helix inversion or screw-sense induction, in the presence of different external stimuli such as temperature, solvents, or metal ions that usually operate independently through interaction with the pendant on the monomer repeating units (m.r.u.). In this work, we will demonstrate that the helical structure of a chiral PPA can be tamed by playing with two different external stimuli such as temperature and metal ions. Thus, when a metal ion salt is delivered to a chloroform solution of a chiral PPA to generate a chiral PPA (m.r.u.)/Mn+ complex in a ratio of 1.0/<0.5 mol/mol, a temperature-responsive material is obtained. Interestingly, when the temperature is lowered to about 278-283 K, the metal ion uncomplexes, which recovers the initial helical structure adopted by the PPA. This complexation-decomplexation between the chiral PPA and the metal ions is fully reversible and triggers different asymmetry amplification effects-helix inversion, screw-sense induction or Sergeants-and-Soldiers (SaS), among others-, allowing the creation of a temperature-responsive helical polymer-metal complex (HPMC) from a metal-responsive helical polymer.

Homochiral Helical Poly(thiophene)s Accessed via Living Catalyst-Transfer Polymerization

Synthetic helical polymers form compact, ordered, and inherently chiral structures, enabling their uses in biomimetic applications as well as catalysis. A challenge in using synthetic helical polymers, however, is their tendency to be sensitive to pH and the presence of nucleophiles, Lewis-acids, or metal ions. We report a strategy to overcome these shortcomings by adapting catalyst-transfer polymerization, a living chain-growth polymerization typically used to access linear conjugated polymers, for the synthesis of helical poly(thiophene)s. We demonstrate that the helical poly(thiophene)s can be synthesized with a single helicity, incorporated into block copolymers, and functionalized at the chain-ends, enabling further conjugation and functionalization. The helical poly(thiophene)s are stable to a variety of conditions, providing benefits over other helical polymers which contain sensitive imine or carbonyl-based functional groups. We anticipate that the ability to access homochiral, heterotelechelic helical conjugated polymers and copolymers will enable new uses of these materials in optoelectronics as well as in applications for mimicking biomacromolecules and other polymers with precisely defined sequences.

Colorimetric detection of oxidizing metal ions using anilide-poly(phenylacetylene)s

Poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) bearing para-substituted anilide pendant groups are sensitive to the presence of oxidizing metal ions such as Cu2+, Hg2+, Fe3+, Au3+ or Ce4+ due to a redox reaction between the anilide-PPA and the metal ion. Using a library of six different PPAs containing diverse chiral pendant groups connected to the PPA backbone through the N (anilide) or C (benzamide) atoms of an amide group used as a linker, it was found that anilide-PPAs are sensitive to oxidizing metal ions. In these polymers, and through a redox reaction, a radical species is delocalized along the polyene backbone, resulting in a color change of the solution from yellow to blue. UV-Vis, ECD, IR, EPR, XPS and computational studies were carried out to demonstrate the electron transfer from PPA to the oxidizing metal once the metal coordinates with the anilide of the polymer.

Construction of dual sites on FeS2 surface for enhanced electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite to ammonia

Cost-effective iron sulfides (FeS2) hold great potential as high-performance catalysts for NO2- electroreduction to NH3 (NO2ER), which is hindered by the weak NO2 activation. Herein, the design of nonmetal-doped FeS2 electrocatalysts was initially conducted by density functional theory (DFT) computations. We found that doping with different nonmetal atoms effectively not only regulates the electronic structures of the d-electrons of Fe atoms but also creates the unique p-d hybridized dual active sites, thereby boosting the efficient NO2 activation. Owing to the optimal NO2 adsorption strength, N-doped FeS2 demonstrates a low limiting potential for the NO2--to-NH3 conversion, thus significantly improving NO2ER activity. Direct experimental evidence was provided afterward: an NH3 yield rate of 424.5 μmol/hcm-2 with a 92.4 % Faradaic efficiency was achieved. Our findings not only suggest a promising NO2ER catalyst through theoretical computations to guide experiments but also provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-properties relationship.

Helical Star-Shaped Bottlebrush Polymers: From Controlled Synthesis to Tunable Photoluminescence and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

The controlled synthesis of star-shaped bottlebrush polymers with tunable topologies is a challenge. However, such materials may exhibit distinct photoluminescence properties. Bottlebrush polymers have polymerization-induced emission (PIE) properties due to their aggregated side chains, and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) is also a unique luminescent property. In this work, we prepared a variety of highly active alkyne Pd catalysts and polymerized poly(L/D-lactic acid) macromonomers containing polymerizable phenylisocyanide groups as end groups to obtain a variety of topologically structured bottlebrush polymers with controllable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Bottlebrush polymers with tetraphenyl ethylene (TPE) units as the core exhibit tunable photoluminescence and circularly polarized luminescence properties. We propose that such properties are due to the unique AIE characteristics of the TPE unit combined with the PIE characteristics of the bottlebrush polymer.

Helix-Sense-Selective Memory Polymerization of Biphenylylacetylenes Bearing Carboxy and Amino Groups in Water

We report the helix-sense-selective memory polymerization (HSMP) of achiral biphenylylacetylenes bearing carboxy and amino pendant groups in the presence of basic and acidic chiral guests in water, respectively. The HSMP proceeds in a highly helix-sense-selective manner driven by noncovalent chiral ionic interactions between the monomers and guests under kinetic control, producing the one-handed helical polymers with a static memory of helicity in one-pot during the polymerization in a very short time, accompanied by amplification of asymmetry. The carboxy-bound helicity-memorized polymer self-assembles into a cholesteric liquid crystal in concentrated water, in which a variety of basic achiral fluorophores further co-assembles to form supramolecular helical aggregates that exhibit an induced circularly polarized luminescence in a color tunable manner.

Helical polyisocyanide-based macroporous organic catalysts for asymmetric Michael addition with high efficiency and stereoselectivity

Porous materials have attracted interest due to their high specific surface area and rich functionality. Immobilizing organocatalysts onto porous polymers not only boosts enantioselectivity but also improves the reaction rates. In this work, a series of porous polymers C-poly-3ms with rigid polyisocyanide-carrying secondary amine pendants as building blocks were successfully prepared. And the pore size and optical activity of C-poly-3ms can be controlled by the length of the polyisocyanide blocks due to their rigid and helical backbone. C-poly-3150 demonstrated a preferred left-handed helix with a θ 364 value of -8.21 × 103. The pore size and S BET of C-poly-3150 were 17.52 nm and 7.98 m2 g-1, respectively. The porous C-poly-3150 catalyzes the asymmetric Michael addition reaction efficiently and generates the target products in satisfactory yield and excellent enantioselectivity. For 6ab, an enantiomeric excess (ee) and a diastereomeric ratio (dr) up to 99% and 99/1 could be achieved, respectively. The recovered catalyst can be recycled at least 6 times in the asymmetric Michael addition reaction while maintaining activity and stereoselectivity.

Optically active poly(diphenylacetylene)s showing solvent-dependent helix inversion accompanied by modulation of helix inversion barriers

Symmetrically substituted poly(diphenylacetylene)s bearing optically active 2-octyloxycarbonyl groups at the para-positions of the pendant phenyl rings not only show a unique solvent-dependent helix inversion to afford diastereomeric right- and left-handed helical polymers but also significant unprecedented solvent-dependent changes in the helix inversion barrier of the polymer backbone resulting in switching between static or dynamic behavior of the helical polymers at approximately room temperature depending on the solvents used.

Size Control of Chiral Nanospheres Obtained via Nanoprecipitation of Helical Poly(phenylacetylene)s in the Absence of Surfactants

Nanostructuration of dynamic helical polymers such as poly(phenylacetylene)s (PPAs) depends on the secondary structure adopted by the polymer and the functional group used to connect the chiral pendant to the PPA backbone. Thus, while PPAs with dynamic and flexible scaffolds (para- and meta-substituted, ω1<165°) generate by nanoprecipitation low polydisperse nanospheres with controllable size at different acetone/water mixtures, those with a quasi-static behavior and the presence of an extended, almost planar structure (ortho-substituted, ω1>165°), aggregate into a mixture of spherical and oval nanostructures whose size is not controlled. Photostability studies show that poly(phenylacetylene) particles are more stable to light irradiation than when dissolved macromolecularly. Moreover, the photostability of the particle depends on the secondary structure of the PPA and its screw sense excess. This fact, in combination with the encapsulation ability of these polymer particles, allows the creation of light stimuli-responsive nanocarriers, whose cargo can be delivered by light irradiation.

Switchable supramolecular helices for asymmetric stereodivergent catalysis

Despite recent developments on the design of dynamic catalysts, none of them have been exploited for the in-situ control of multiple stereogenic centers in a single molecular scaffold. We report herein that it is possible to obtain in majority any amongst the four possible stereoisomers of an amino alcohol by means of a switchable asymmetric catalyst built on supramolecular helices. Hydrogen-bonded assemblies between a benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) achiral phosphine ligand coordinated to copper and a chiral BTA comonomer are engaged in a copper-hydride catalyzed hydrosilylation and hydroamination cascade process. The nature of the product stereoisomer is related to the handedness of the helices and can thus be directed in a predictable way by changing the nature of the major enantiomer of the BTA comonomer present in the assemblies. The strategy allows all stereoisomers to be obtained one-pot with similar selectivities by conducting the cascade reaction in a concomitant manner, i.e. without inverting the handedness of the helices, or sequentially, i.e. by switching the handedness of the supramolecular helices between the hydrosilylation and hydroamination steps. Supramolecular helical catalysts appear as a unique and versatile platform to control the configuration of molecules or polymers embedding several stereogenic centers.

Polymers with Circularly Polarized Luminescent Properties: Design, Synthesis, and Prospects

Chiral materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have garnered significant attention owing to their distinctive luminescent properties and wide array of applications. CPL enables the selective emission of left and right circularly polarized light. The fluorescence quantum yield and dissymmetry factor play pivotal roles in the generation of CPL. Helical polymers exhibit immense promise as CPL materials due to their inherent chirality, structural versatility, modifiability, and capacity to incorporate diverse chromophores. This Review provides a brief review of the synthesis of CPL materials based on helical polymers. The CPL can be realized by aggregation-induced CPL of non-emissive helical polymers, and helices bearing chromophores on the pendants and on the chain end. Furthermore, future challenges and potential applications of CPL materials are summarized and discussed.

Stimuli-responsive synthetic helical polymers

Synthetic dynamic helical polymers (supramolecular and covalent) and foldamers share the helix as a structural motif. Although the materials are different, these systems also share many structural properties, such as helix induction or conformational communication mechanisms. The introduction of stimuli responsive building blocks or monomer repeating units in these materials triggers conformational or structural changes, due to the presence/absence of the external stimulus, which are transmitted to the helix resulting in different effects, such as assymetry amplification, helix inversion or even changes in the helical scaffold (elongation, J/H helical aggregates). In this review, we show through selected examples how different stimuli (e.g., temperature, solvents, cations, anions, redox, chiral additives, pH or light) can alter the helical structures of dynamic helical polymers (covalent and supramolecular) and foldamers acting on the conformational composition or molecular structure of their components, which is also transmitted to the macromolecular helical structure.

Synthesis of Stereocontrolled Degradable Polymer by Living Cascade Enyne Metathesis Polymerization

A stereocontrolled degradable polymer was synthesized via living cascade enyne metathesis polymerization. Highly stereodefined N,O-acetal-containing enyne monomers were prepared using the Pd-catalyzed hydroamination of alkoxyallenes and ring-closing metathesis. The resulting chiral polymer exhibited a narrow dispersity window. Block copolymers were prepared not only by sequentially adding nondegradable and degradable monomers but also by using enantiomerically different monomers to produce stereocontrolled blocks. Owing to the hydrolyzable N,O-acetal moiety in the backbone structure, the resulting polymer could degrade under acidic conditions generated using various acid concentrations to control the degradation. Additionally, the aza-Diels-Alder reaction modified the polymer without losing the stereochemistry.

Thermo-responsive chiral micelles as recyclable organocatalyst for asymmetric Rauhut-Currier reaction in water

Developing eco-friendly chiral organocatalysts with the combined advantages of homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous processes is greatly desired. In this work, a family of amphiphilic one-handed helical polyisocyanides bearing phosphine pendants is prepared, which self-assembles into well-defined chiral micelles in water and showed thermo-responsiveness with a cloud point of approximately 38.4 °C. The micelles with abundant phosphine moieties at the interior efficiently catalyze asymmetric cross Rauhut-Currier reaction in water. Various water-insoluble substrates are transferred to target products in high yield with excellent enantioselectivity. The yield and enantiomeric excess (ee) of the product generated in water are up to 90% and 96%, respectively. Meanwhile, the yields of the same R-C reaction catalyzed by the polymer itself in organic solvents is <16%, with an ee < 72%. The homogeneous reaction of the chiral micelles in water turns to heterogeneous at temperatures higher than the cloud point, and the catalyst precipitation facilitates product isolation and catalyst recovery. The polymer catalyst is recycled 10 times while maintaining activity and enantioselectivity.

Helix-Induced Asymmetric Self-Assembly of π-Conjugated Block Copolymers: From Controlled Syntheses to Distinct Properties

Conspectusπ-Conjugated polymers have gained significant interest because of their potential applications in optoelectronics, bioelectronics, and other domains. The controlled synthesis of π-conjugated block polymers optimizes their performance and enables novel properties and functions. However, precise control of the self-assembled architectures of π-conjugated polymers remains a formidable challenge. Inspired by the precise helical architectures of biomacromolecules, the helical polymers and the supramolecular helical assemblies have gained significant attention. Helical polymers with an excess of one-handed helicity can be optically active with a strong tendency toward self-assembly. Incorporating a helical polymer into a π-conjugated polymer can induce asymmetric helical assemblies, leading to novel chiral materials with unique functionalities.To control the self-assembly of architectures, π-conjugated polymers are usually synthesized into block copolymers by incorporating a polymer with self-assembling characteristics. Although various π-conjugated block copolymers have been produced, precise and asymmetric self-assembly is still challenging and has rarely been addressed. Incorporating helical polymers into the π-conjugated polymers can induce a precise and asymmetric self-assembly, which transfers the chirality of the helical polymer block to the π-conjugated polymer, resulting in chiral supramolecular architectures with unique chiroptical properties and functionalities. However, synthesizing hybrid block copolymers containing two distinct polymer blocks is complicated. Some general strategies such as connecting the chain ends of two preformed homopolymers and extending the chain of a prefabricated π-conjugated polymer with a second monomer are time-consuming and require complex synthetic protocols. Therefore, developing novel strategies for the facile synthesis of π-conjugated block copolymers with a predictable molar mass, low dispersity, and tunable composition is of practical importance.Recently, we investigated a controlled synthesis of helical polyisocyanides, helical polyallenes, and helical polycarbenes by developing advanced Pd(II) and Ni(II) catalysts. These helical polymers were successfully incorporated into π-conjugated polymers, including polythiophene, polyfluorene, and poly(phenyleneethynylene), via a one-pot sequential living block polymerization of the two distinct monomers using Pd(II)- or Ni(II)-complexes as catalysts. As a result, a variety of well-defined π-conjugated block copolymers containing helical polymeric blocks were readily synthesized. Although the copolymerized monomers possess different structures and polymerization mechanisms, the one-pot block copolymerization followed a living polymerization mechanism and provided the desired π-conjugated block copolymers in high yields with controlled molar mass, narrow size distribution, and tunable composition.Remarkably, the helical polymeric block induces the π-conjugated block copolymer asymmetric self-assembly into a supramolecular, one-handed helical architecture resulting in distinct optical properties. More interestingly, by utilizing the crystallization of conjugated blocks and one-handed helical blocks, the crystallization-driven and helix-induced precise asymmetric living self-assembly yielded a family of uniform and single-handed helical architectures with controlled dimensions, narrow distribution, and well-defined helicity. The transfer of helical chirality to the supramolecular architectures rendered the achiral π-conjugated blocks with unique chiroptical properties such as the emission of white light over a broad optical spectrum and the circularly polarized luminescence.

Helical Nanofiber Photoelectric Synaptic Devices for an Artificial Vision Nervous System

Inspired by the helical structure and the resultant exquisite functions of biomolecules, helical polymers have received increasing attention. Here, a series of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-block-poly(phenyl isocyanide) (P3HT-b-PPI) copolymers were prepared using a simple one-pot living polymerization method. Interestingly, the P3HT80-b-PPI30 films were found to have a helical nanofiber structure. The corresponding device has superior optoelectronic properties, such as a broadened spectral response range from the visible band to the deep ultraviolet (DUV) and an approximately 5-fold longer carrier decay time after DUV light stimulation. An energy consumption of 1.44 fJ per synaptic event was obtained, which is the lowest energy consumption achieved so far with DUV light stimulation. The encryption and decryption of images are implemented using an array of devices. Finally, a photoreceptor neural pathway was constructed to achieve early warning for the recognition of the display of harmful light. This research provides an effective strategy for the development of a novel optoelectronic synaptic device.

Intense Circularly Polarized Fluorescence and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence in Carbon Dots/Chiral Helical Polymer Composite Films

Chiral carbon dots (C-dots) with a circularly polarized fluorescence (CPF) property have attracted tremendous attention due to their significant applications in chiral optoelectronics and theranostics. However, constructing circularly polarized room-temperature phosphorescent (CPRTP) C-dots remains a great challenge. Herein, a strategy is established to achieve efficient CPF and CPRTP emissions in C-dots/chiral helical polymer bilayer composite film. Taking advantage of the chiral filter effect of chiral helical polymer, intense CPF and CPRTP emissions with large dissymmetric factors up to 1.4 × 10^-1 and 1.2 × 10^-2 are respectively obtained, even though there is only a simple interface contact between the C-dots layer and the chiral helical polymer layer. More importantly, white-color CPF emission and multiple information display and encryption are further realized based on the prepared chiral luminescent composite films.
