Magnetic ordering through itinerant ferromagnetism in a metal-organic framework

Heteropentanuclear {Ru(II)Cu(II)4} Kuratowski Complexes Assembled from a Ruthenium(II) Precursor Complex to Study Competing Exchange Interactions in M(II)(ta)2 Networks [ta(-) = 1,2,3-Triazolate]

We report a directed two-step synthesis toward pentanuclear Kuratowski complexes. First, six 5,6-dimethylbenzo[1,2,3]triazole ligands (Me2btaH) are coordinated to a single Ru(II) ion, providing a topologically ideal template for the addition of further metal ions. The synthesis and crystal structures of [RuCu4X4(Me2bta)6] [X = acetylacetonate (acac) and tris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate (Tp*)] are described. Both represent new members of the family of so-called Kuratowski (K3,3) complexes. The coordination units feature triazolato-bridged metal-centered {MM4} tetrahedra, which are known for frustrated magnetic interactions in both complexes and metal-organic frameworks. The novel Ru(II)-centered complexes were synthesized in order to investigate the influence of the presence or absence of a paramagnetic central metal ion in the Kuratowski complex. Superconducting quantum interference device and electron spin resonance measurements demonstrate that small deviations in bond lengths and valence angles can lead to the formation of pairs of magnetic exchange-coupled Cu(II) ions. Which Cu(II) ions pair up can be predicted in Jahn-Teller active compounds by the overlap of the respective orbitals. These data are compared with those gleaned for M(II)(ta)2 (ta = 1,2,3-triazolate) lattices, in which structurally similar {MM4} tetrahedra constitute the secondary building units.

Ferromagnetism on an atom-thick & extended 2D metal-organic coordination network

Ferromagnetism is the collective alignment of atomic spins that retain a net magnetic moment below the Curie temperature, even in the absence of external magnetic fields. Reducing this fundamental property into strictly two-dimensions was proposed in metal-organic coordination networks, but thus far has eluded experimental realization. In this work, we demonstrate that extended, cooperative ferromagnetism is feasible in an atomically thin two-dimensional metal-organic coordination network, despite only ≈ 5% of the monolayer being composed of Fe atoms. The resulting ferromagnetic state exhibits an out-of-plane easy-axis square-like hysteresis loop with large coercive fields over 2 Tesla, significant magnetic anisotropy, and persists up to TC ≈ 35 K. These properties are driven by exchange interactions mainly mediated by the molecular linkers. Our findings resolve a two decade search for ferromagnetism in two-dimensional metal-organic coordination networks.

Intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional semiconducting metal-organic framework

The development of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors with room-temperature ferromagnetism is a significant challenge in materials science and is important for the development of next-generation spintronic devices. Herein, we demonstrate that a 2D semiconducting antiferromagnetic Cu-MOF can be endowed with intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic coupling using a ligand cleavage strategy to regulate the inner magnetic interaction within the Cu dimers. Using the element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) technique, we provide unambiguous evidence for intrinsic ferromagnetism. Exhaustive structural characterizations confirm that the change of magnetic coupling is caused by the increased distance between Cu atoms within a Cu dimer. Theoretical calculations reveal that the ferromagnetic coupling is enhanced with the increased Cu-Cu distance, which depresses the hybridization between 3d orbitals of nearest Cu atoms. Our work provides an effective avenue to design and fabricate MOF-based semiconducting room-temperature ferromagnetic materials and promotes their practical applications in next-generation spintronic devices.

Review on Uric Acid Recognition by MOFs with a Future in Machine Learning

Uric acid (UA) is produced from purine metabolism and serves as a prevalent biomarker for multiple diseases including cancer. Hyperuricemia or hypouricemia can cause multiple dysfunctions throughout the biological processes. Consequently, there is a pressing need for monitoring UA concentration in body fluid. While clinical methods are known, the availability of a point-of-care testing (PoCT) kit remains conspicuously absent. In the case of electrochemical recognition of UA, the oxidation potential of ascorbic acid closely aligns with that of UA and thus it hinders the detection process, which eventually may result in false positive signals. Several chemosensors are known in the field of supramolecular chemistry, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one of the best-performing contenders due to their robustness, stability, and versatile structures. In this review, we tried to unbox the up-to-date development of UA sensing by MOFs. We delve into the state of UA recognition by MOFs, exploring both electrochemical and fluorometric pathways and drawing comparisons with structurally similar probes like covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to understand/establish the advantages of MOFs specifically in UA sensing. In the absence of a PoCT kit, we have provided the conceptual outlook for designing a PoCT device termed a "Urimeter" via electrochemical operation. For the first time, we have proposed different methods of how UA sensing can be tied up with artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI-ML).

Direct Observation of Magnetic Domain and Magnetization Reversal on Prussian Blue-Based Magnetic Films

Knowledge of the magnetic domain is indispensable for understanding the magnetostatic properties of magnets. However, to date, the magnetic domain has not yet been reported in the field of molecule-based magnets. Herein, we study the magnetic domains of molecule-based magnets. Two magnetic films of iron/chromium hexacyanidochromate FexCr1-x[Cr(CN)6]2/3·5H2O (x = 0; Film 1 and x = 0.2; Film 2) were prepared for investigation. The temperature evolution of surface magnetization was measured using magnetic force microscopy. Film 1 showed a magnetic domain below Curie temperature (TC) and its positive-magnetic polarization increased monotonously with decreasing temperature, while Film 2 showed positive magnetic polarization below TC and switches from positive to negative magnetization through a demagnetization state at 146 K. This study originally reports the temperature variation of the magnetization state at the magnetization reversal. The magnetic domains appeared as a maze pattern with an approximate domain size of one-to-several micrometers. This work shows that research on molecule-based magnets can be expanded from magnetochemistry to the magnetostatic engineering of bulk magnets, molecule-based magnetostatic engineering.

A Paramagnetic Compass Based on Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework

Macroscopic compass-like magnetic alignment at low magnetic fields is natural for ferromagnetic materials but is seldomly observed in paramagnetic materials. Herein, we report a "paramagnetic compass" that magnetically aligns under ∼mT fields based on the single-crystalline framework constructed by lanthanide ions and organic ligands (Ln-MOF). The magnetic alignment is attributed to the Ln-MOF's strong macroscopic anisotropy, where the highly-ordered structure allows the Ln-ions' molecular anisotropy to be summed according to the crystal symmetry. In tetragonal Ln-MOFs, the alignment is either parallel or perpendicular to the field depending on the easiest axis of the molecular anisotropy. Reversible switching between the two alignments is realized upon the removal and re-adsorption of solvent molecules filled in the framework. When the crystal symmetry is lowered in monoclinic Ln-MOFs, the alignments become even inclined (47°-66°) to the field. These fascinating properties of Ln-MOFs would encourage further explorations of framework materials containing paramagnetic centers.

Neutron Scattering Studies of Heterogeneous Catalysis

Understanding the structural dynamics/evolution of catalysts and the related surface chemistry is essential for establishing structure-catalysis relationships, where spectroscopic and scattering tools play a crucial role. Among many such tools, neutron scattering, though less-known, has a unique power for investigating catalytic phenomena. Since neutrons interact with the nuclei of matter, the neutron-nucleon interaction provides unique information on light elements (mainly hydrogen), neighboring elements, and isotopes, which are complementary to X-ray and photon-based techniques. Neutron vibrational spectroscopy has been the most utilized neutron scattering approach for heterogeneous catalysis research by providing chemical information on surface/bulk species (mostly H-containing) and reaction chemistry. Neutron diffraction and quasielastic neutron scattering can also supply important information on catalyst structures and dynamics of surface species. Other neutron approaches, such as small angle neutron scattering and neutron imaging, have been much less used but still give distinctive catalytic information. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in neutron scattering investigations of heterogeneous catalysis, focusing on surface adsorbates, reaction mechanisms, and catalyst structural changes revealed by neutron spectroscopy, diffraction, quasielastic neutron scattering, and other neutron techniques. Perspectives are also provided on the challenges and future opportunities in neutron scattering studies of heterogeneous catalysis.

Spin-Resolved Band Structure of Hoffman Clathrate [Fe(pz)2Pt(CN)4] as an Essential Tool to Predict Optical Spectra of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Paramount spin-crossover properties of the 3D-Hoffman metalorganic framework (MOF) [Fe(pz)₂Pt(CN)₄] are generally described on the basis of the ligand field theory, which provides adequate insight into theoretical and simulation analysis of spintronic complexes. However, the ligand field approximation does not take into account the 3D periodicity of the actual complex lattice and surface effects and therefore cannot predict a full-scale periodic structure without utilizing more advanced methods. Therefore, in this paper, the electronic properties of the exemplar MOF were analyzed from the band structure perspective in low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) states. The density-of-states spectra determined for both spin-up and spin-down electrons of Fe d⁶ orbitals indicate spin-orbital splitting and delocalization for HS due to spin polarization in the iron atom ligand field. Presence of the surface states in the real crystal causes a red shift of the metal-metal charge transfer (MMCT) and metal-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) peaks for both HS and LS states. The addition of residual water molecules and disorder among the pyrazine rings reveal additional influences on the positions of the pyrazine band and, therefore, on the absorption spectra of the crystal. The results show a magnification of the peak correlated with the MLCT in the HS state and a significant red shift of the LS characteristic absorption band. The presented approach involving band structure analysis delivers a more complete image of the electronic properties of the [Fe(pz)₂Pt(CN)₄] crystalline network and can be a landmark for insightful studies of other MOFs.

Ho-Ion-Polymer/Graphene Heterojunctions Toward Room-Temperature Ferromagnets

Organic ferromagnetic materials offer great promise for spintronic devices, carbon-based chips, and quantum communications, but remain as a challenging issue due to their low saturation magnetization and/or unsustainable ferromagnetic properties. To date, magnetic ion polymers have displayed paramagnetism without exception at room-temperature. In this study, it is reported for the first time that, owing to the structural restriction and charge exchange of Ho ion by polymer/graphene π-π stacking heterojunctions, holmium ion polymer composites exhibited typical hysteresis lines of ferromagnetic materials at room temperature. The room-temperature ferromagnetic ion polymer composite presented the highest saturation magnetization value of 3.36 emu g^-1 and unprecedented sustainable ferromagnetism, compared to reported room-temperature organic ferromagnetic materials. Accordingly, prepared ferromagnetic composites also achieved impressive wave absorption properties, with a maximum reflection loss of as much as -57.32 dB and a broad absorption bandwidth of 5.05 GHz. These findings may promote the development of room-temperature organic ferromagnetic materials.

Recent Progress of Organic Semiconductor Materials in Spintronics

Spintronics, a new discipline focusing on the spin-dependent transport process of electrons, has been developing rapidly. Spin valves are the most significant carriers of spintronics utilizing the spin freedom of electrons. It is expected to pierce "Moore's Law" and become the core component in processors of the next generation. Organic semiconductors advance in their adjustable band gap, weak spin-orbit coupling and hyperfine interaction, excellent film-forming property, having enormous promise for spin valves. Here, the principle of spin valves is introduced, and the history and progress in organic spin injection and transport materials are summarized. Then we analyze the influence of spinterface on device performance and introduce reliable methods of constructing organic spin valves. Finally, the challenges for spin valves are discussed, and the future is proposed. We aim to draw the attention of researchers to organic spin valves and promote further research in spintronics through this paper.

Inter-layer magnetic tuning by gas adsorption in π-stacked pillared-layer framework magnets

Magnetism of layered magnets depends on the inter-layer through-space magnetic interactions (J NNNI). Using guest sorption to address inter-layer pores in bulk-layered magnets is an efficient approach to magnetism control because the guest-delicate inter-layer distance (l trans) is a variable parameter for modulating J NNNI. Herein, we demonstrated magnetic changes induced by the adsorption of CO2, N2, and O2 gases in various isostructural layered magnets with a π-stacked pillared-layer framework, , (M = Co, 1, Fe, 2, Cr, 3; Cp* = η5-C5Me5; 2,3,5,6-F4PhCO2 - = 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate; TCNQ = 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane). Each compound had almost identical adsorption capability for the three types of gases; only CO2 adsorption was found to have a gated profile. A breathing-like structural modulation involving the extension of l trans occurred after the insertion of gases into the isolated pores between the [Ru2]2-TCNQ ferrimagnetic layers, which is more significant for CO2 than for O2 and N2, due to the CO2-gated transition. While adsorbent 1 with M = Co (S = 0) was an antiferromagnet with T N = 75 K, 1⊃CO2 was a ferrimagnet with T C = 76 K, whereas 1⊃N2 and 1⊃O2 were antiferromagnets with T N = 68 K. The guest-insertion effect was similarly confirmed in 2 and 3, and was characteristically dependent on the type of sandwiched spin in as M = Fe (S = 1/2) and Cr (S = 3/2), respectively. This study reveals that common gases such as CO2, O2, and N2 can serve as crucial triggers for the change in magnetism as a function of variable parameter l trans.

Two-Electron Mixed Valency in a Heterotrimetallic Nickel-Vanadium-Nickel Complex

Mixed-valence complexes represent an enticing class of coordination compounds to interrogate electron transfer confined within a molecular framework. The diamagnetic heterotrimetallic anion, [V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂]^-, was prepared by reducing (dppe)NiCl₂ in the presence of the chelating metalloligand [V(SNS)₂]^- [dppe = bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane; (SNS)^3- = bis(2-thiolato-4-methylphenyl)amide]. Vanadium-nickel bonds span the heterotrimetallic core in the structure of [V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂]^-, with V-Ni bond lengths of 2.78 and 2.79 Å. One-electron oxidation of monoanionic [V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂]^- yielded neutral, paramagnetic V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂. The solid-state structure of V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂ revealed that the two nickel ions occupy unique coordination environments: one nickel is in a square-planar S₂P₂ coordination environment (τ₄ = 0.19), with a long Ni···V distance of 3.45 Å; the other nickel is in a tetrahedral S₂P₂ coordination environment (τ₄ = 0.84) with a short Ni-V distance of 2.60 Å, consistent with a formal metal-metal bond. Continuous-wave X-band electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, electrochemical investigations, and density functional theory computations indicated that the unpaired electron in the neutral V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂ cluster is localized on the bridging [V(SNS)₂] metalloligand, and as a result, V(SNS)₂{Ni(dppe)}₂ is best described as a two-electron mixed-valence complex. These results demonstrate the important role that metal-metal interactions and flexible coordination geometries play in enabling multiple, reversible electron transfer processes in small cluster complexes.

Low-Dimensional Metal-Organic Magnets as a Route toward the S = 2 Haldane Phase

Metal-organic magnets (MOMs), modular magnetic materials where metal atoms are connected by organic linkers, are promising candidates for next-generation quantum technologies. MOMs readily form low-dimensional structures and so are ideal systems to realize physical examples of key quantum models, including the Haldane phase, where a topological excitation gap occurs in integer-spin antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains. Thus, far the Haldane phase has only been identified for S = 1, with S ≥ 2 still unrealized because the larger spin imposes more stringent requirements on the magnetic interactions. Here, we report the structure and magnetic properties of CrCl₂(pym) (pym = pyrimidine), a new quasi-1D S = 2 AFM MOM. We show, using X-ray and neutron diffraction, bulk property measurements, density-functional theory calculations, and inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS), that CrCl₂(pym) consists of AFM CrCl₂ spin chains (J₁ = -1.13(4) meV) which are weakly ferromagnetically coupled through bridging pym (J₂ = 0.10(2) meV), with easy-axis anisotropy (D = -0.15(3) meV). We find that, although small compared to J₁, these additional interactions are sufficient to prevent observation of the Haldane phase in this material. Nevertheless, the proximity to the Haldane phase together with the modularity of MOMs suggests that layered Cr(II) MOMs are a promising family to search for the elusive S = 2 Haldane phase.

Prediction of Multiple Hydrogen Ligation at a Vanadium(II) Site in a Metal-Organic Framework

Densifying hydrogen in a metal-organic framework (MOF) at moderate pressures can circumvent challenges associated with high-pressure compression. The highly tunable structural and chemical composition in MOFs affords vast possibilities to optimize binding interactions. At the heart of this search are the nanoscale characteristics of molecular adsorption at the binding site(s). Using density functional theory (DFT) to model binding interactions of hydrogen to the exposed metal site of cation-exchanged MFU-4l, we predict multiple hydrogen ligation of H₂ at the first coordination sphere of V(II) in V(II)-exchanged MFU-4l. We find that the strength of this binding between the metal site and H₂ molecules can be tuned by altering the halide counterion adjacent to the metal site and that the fluoride containing node affords the most favorable interactions for high-density H₂ storage. Using energy decomposition analysis, we delineate electronic contributions that enable multiple hydrogen ligation and demonstrate its benefits for hydrogen adsorption and release at modest pressures.

Linker Redox Mediated Control of Morphology and Properties in Semiconducting Iron-Semiquinoid Coordination Polymers

The emergence of conductive 2D and less commonly 3D coordination polymers (CPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) promises novel applications in many fields. However, the synthetic parameters for these electronically complex materials are not thoroughly understood. Here we report a new 3D semiconducting CP Fe₅ (C₆ O₆ )₃ , which is a fusion of 2D Fe-semiquinoid materials and 3D cubic Fe_x (C₆ O₆ )_y materials, by using a different initial redox-state of the C₆ O₆ linker. The material displays high electrical conductivity (0.02 S cm^-1 ), broad electronic transitions, promising thermoelectric behavior (S² σ=7.0×10^-9  W m^-1  K^-2 ), and strong antiferromagnetic interactions at room temperature. This material illustrates how controlling the oxidation states of redox-active components in conducting CPs/MOFs can be a "pre-synthetic" strategy to carefully tune material topologies and properties in contrast to more commonly encountered post-synthetic modifications.

From an antiferromagnetic insulator to a strongly correlated metal in square-lattice MCl2(pyrazine)2 coordination solids

Electronic synergy between metal ions and organic linkers is a key to engineering molecule-based materials with a high electrical conductivity and, ultimately, metallicity. To enhance conductivity in metal-organic solids, chemists aim to bring the electrochemical potentials of the constituent metal ions and bridging organic ligands closer in a quest to obtain metal-d and ligand-π admixed frontier bands. Herein, we demonstrate the critical role of the metal ion in tuning the electronic ground state of such materials. While VCl₂(pyrazine)₂ is an electrical insulator, TiCl₂(pyrazine)₂ displays the highest room-temperature electronic conductivity (5.3 S cm^-1) for any metal-organic solid involving octahedrally coordinated metal ions. Notably, TiCl₂(pyrazine)₂ exhibits Pauli paramagnetism consistent with the specific heat, supporting the existence of a Fermi liquid state (i.e., a correlated metal). This result widens perspectives for designing molecule-based systems with strong metal-ligand covalency and electronic correlations.

Redox-Active Covalent Organic Frameworks with Nickel-Bis(dithiolene) Units as Guiding Layers for High-Performance Lithium Metal Batteries

Combining the chemistry of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can bring new opportunities for the design of advanced materials with enhanced tunability and functionality. Herein, we constructed two COFs based on Ni-bis(dithiolene) units and imine bonds, representing a bridge between traditional MOFs and COFs. The Ni-bis(dithiolene)tetrabenzaldehyde as the 4-connected linker was initially synthesized, which was further linked by 4-connected tetra(aminophenyl)pyrene (TAP) or 3-connected tris(aminophenyl)amine (TAA) linkers into two COFs, namely, Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA. Ni-TAP shows a two-dimensional sql network, while TAA is a twofold interpenetrated framework with an ffc topology. They both exhibit a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (324 and 689 m² g^-1 for Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA, respectively), a fairly good conductivity (1.57 × 10^-6 and 9.75 × 10^-5 S m^-1 for Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA, respectively), and high chemical stability (a stable pH window of 1-14 for Ni-TAA). When applied in lithium metal batteries as an intermediate layer for guiding the uniform Li electrodeposition, Ni-TAP and Ni-TAA displayed impressive lithiophilicity and high Li-ion conductivity, enabling the achievement of smooth and dense Li deposition with a clear columnar morphology and stable Li plating/stripping behaviors with high Li utilization, which is anticipated to pave the way to upgrade Li metal anodes for application in high-energy-density battery systems.

Enhanced Curie Temperature of Two-Dimensional Cr(II) Aromatic Heterocyclic Metal-Organic Framework Magnets via Strengthened Orbital Hybridization

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with room-temperature magnetism are highly desirable but challenging due to the weak superexchange interaction between metal atoms. For this purpose, strengthening the hybridization between metal ion and organic linkage presents an experiment-feasible chemical solution to enhance the Curie temperature. Here, we report three 2D Cr(II) aromatic heterocyclic MOF magnets with enhanced Curie temperature by bridging Cr(II) ions with pyrazine, 1,4-diphosphinine, and 1,4-diarsenin linkers, i.e., Cr(pyz)₂, Cr(diphos)₂, and Cr(diarse)₂, and using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cr(pyz)₂, Cr(diphos)₂, and Cr(diarse)₂ are ferrimagnetic semiconductors. In particular, the Curie temperature of Cr(pyz)₂ is estimated to be about 344 K and could be enhanced to 512 and 437 K in Cr(diphos)₂ and Cr(diarse)₂ by strengthening the hybridization between Cr ions and organic linkers via d-π* direct exchange interaction. This study presents a prototype to obtain room-temperature magnetism in 2D Cr(II)-based MOF magnets for nanoscale spintronics applications.

Tuning chain topologies and magnetic anisotropy in one-dimensional cobalt(II) coordination polymers via distinct dicarboxylates

Tuning the structure and magnetic properties via distinct pyridine derivatives in cobalt(II) coordination polymers

Precise modulation of the structure and magnetic properties of coordination compounds is of great importance in the development of framework magnetic materials. Herein, we report that the coordination self-assembly of a neutral cobalt(II) magnetic building block and selective pyridine derivatives as organic linkers has led to two distinct cobalt(II) coordination polymers, {Co(DClQ)₂(bpy)}_n (1) and {Co₂(DClQ)₄(tpb)}_n (2) (DClQ = (5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline; bpy = 4, 4'-dipyridine; tpb = 1,2,4,5-tetra(4-pyridyl)benzene)). Structural analyses revealed that 1 and 2 are one-dimensional (1D) and 2D coordination polymers containing the same neutral magnetic building block [Co(DClQ)₂] bridged by bitopic bpy and tetratopic tpb ligands, respectively. Both the complexes have a distorted octahedral CoN₄O₂ coordination geometry around each cobalt center offered by the bidentate ligand and organic linkers. Magnetic studies reveal large easy-plane and easy-axis magnetic anisotropy for 1 and 2, respectively. However, because of the weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the bpy-bridged Co^II centers, no slow relaxation of the magnetization was observed in 1 under both zero or applied dc fields. Interestingly, complex 2 exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, indicative of a framework single-ion magnet of 2. Theoretical calculations further support the experimental results and unveil that the D values are +65.3 and -91.2 cm^-1 for 1 and 2, respectively, while the magnetic exchange interaction was precisely estimated as -0.16 (1) and -0.009 (2) cm^-1. The foregoing results show that the structural dimensionality and magnetic properties can be rationally modified via pre-designed magnetic building blocks and a suitable choice of organic bridging ligands.
