Abstract
The generation of hydrogen as a clean energy carrier by photocatalysis, as a zero-emission technology, is of significant scientific and industrial interest. However, the main drawback of photocatalytic hydrogen generation from water splitting is its low efficiency compared to traditional chemical or electrochemical methods. Zinc oxide (ZnO) with the wurtzite phase is one of the most investigated photocatalysts for hydrogen production, but its activity still needs to be improved. In this study, an oxygen-deficient high-pressure ZnO rocksalt phase is stabilized using a high-pressure torsion (HPT) method, and the product is used for photocatalysis under ambient pressure. The simultaneous introduction of oxygen vacancies and the rocksalt phase effectively improved photocatalytic hydrogen production to levels comparable to benchmark P25 TiO2, due to improving light absorbance and providing active sites for photocatalysis without any negative effect on electron-hole recombination. These results confirm the high potential of high-pressure phases for photocatalytic hydrogen generation.

Abstract
Organic supramolecular photocatalysts have garnered widespread attention due to their adjustable structure and exceptional photocatalytic activity. Herein, a novel bis-dicarboxyphenyl-substituent naphthalenediimide self-assembly supramolecular photocatalyst (SA-NDI-BCOOH) with efficient dual-functional photocatalytic performance is successfully constructed. The large molecular dipole moment and short-range ordered stacking structure of SA-NDI-BCOOH synergistically create a giant internal electric field (IEF), resulting in a remarkable 6.7-fold increase in its charge separation efficiency. Additionally, the tetracarboxylic structure of SA-NDI-BCOOH greatly enhances its hydrophilicity. Thus, SA-NDI-BCOOH demonstrates efficient dual-functional activity for photocatalytic hydrogen and oxygen evolution, with rates of 372.8 and 3.8 µmol h-1 , respectively. Meanwhile, a notable apparent quantum efficiency of 10.86% at 400 nm for hydrogen evolution is achieved, prominently surpassing many reported supramolecular photocatalysts. More importantly, with the help of dual co-catalysts, it exhibits photocatalytic overall water splitting activity with H2 and O2 evolution rates of 3.2 and 1.6 µmol h-1 . Briefly, this work sheds light on enhancing the IEF by controlling the molecular polarity and stacking structure to dramatically improve the photocatalytic performance of supramolecular materials.

Abstract
Single-crystal semiconductor-based photocatalysts exposing unique crystallographic facets show promising applications in energy and environmental technologies; however, crystal facet engineering through solid-state synthesis for photocatalytic overall water splitting is still challenging. Herein, we develop a novel crystal facet engineering strategy through solid-state recrystallization to synthesize uniform SrTiO3 single crystals exposing tailored {111} facets. The presynthesized low-crystalline SrTiO3 precursors enable the formation of well-defined single crystals through kinetically improved crystal structure transformation during solid-state recrystallization process. By employing subtle Al3+ ions as surface morphology modulators, the crystal surface orientation can be precisely tuned to a controlled percentage of {111} facets. The photocatalytic overall water splitting activity increases with the exposure percentage of {111} facets. Owing to the outstanding crystallinity and favorable anisotropic surface structure, the SrTiO3 single crystals with 36.6% of {111} facets lead to a 3-fold enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rates up to 1.55 mmol·h-1 in a stoichiometric ratio of 2:1 than thermodynamically stable SrTiO3 enclosed with isotropic {100} facets.

Abstract
The practical applications of solar-driven water splitting pivot on significant advances that enable scalable production of robust photoactive films. Here, we propose a proof-of-concept for fabricating robust photoactive films by a particle-implanting technique (PiP) which embeds semiconductor photoabsorbers in the liquid metal. The strong semiconductor/metal interaction enables resulting films efficient collection of photogenerated charges and superior photoactivity. A photoanode of liquid-metal embraced BiVO4 can stably operate over 120 h and retain ~ 70% of activity when scaled from 1 to 64 cm2. Furthermore, a Z-scheme photocatalyst film of liquid-metal embraced BiVO4 and Rh-doped SrTiO3 particles can drive overall water splitting under visible light, delivering an activity 2.9 times higher than that of the control film with gold support and a 110 h stability. These results demonstrate the advantages of the PiP technique in constructing robust and efficient photoactive films for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract
Titanate perovskite (ATiO3) semiconductors show prospects of being active photocatalysts in the conversion of CO2 to chemical fuels such as methanol (CH3OH) in the aqueous phase. Some of the challenges in using ATiO3 are limited light-harvesting capability, rapid bulk charge recombination, and the low density of catalytic sites participating in CO2 reduction. To address these challenges, Ga-doped NiTiO3 (GNTO) photocatalysts in which Ga ions substitute for Ti ions in the crystal lattice to form electron trap states and oxygen vacancies have been synthesized in this work. The synthesized GNTO was then loaded with Ru nanoparticles to accelerate charge separation and enable excellent CO2 photoreduction activity under visible light. CO2 photoreduction was conducted in a batch photoreactor charged with a 0.1 M NaHCO3 aqueous solution at room temperature and a 3.5 bar pressure using a 1.0 wt % Ru-GNTO photocatalyst to yield methanol at a rate of 84.45 μmol g-1 h-1. A small amount of methane was produced as a side product at 21.35 μmol g-1 h-1, which is also a fuel molecule. We attribute this high catalytic activity toward CO2 photoreduction to a synergistic combination of our novel heterostructured 1.0 wt % Ru-GNTO photocatalyst and the implementation of a pressurized photoreactor. This work demonstrates an effective strategy for metal doping with active nanospecies functionality to improve the performance of ATiO3 photocatalysts in valorizing CO2 to solar fuels.

Abstract
The intra-gap states that are introduced into a semiconducting photocatalyst via dopants and other defects have significant implications on the transport dynamics of photoexcited electrons and holes during an aqueous light-driven reaction. In this work, mechanistic understanding of Rh-doped rutile, a promising photocatalyst for hydrogen production from water, is gained by systematic assessment combining intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy with sub-gap excitations and alternating-current photocurrent spectroscopy. These operando techniques not only help in discovering a new electronic transport path in Rh-rutile via surface Rh4+ species and elucidating complex interaction between electrolyte molecules and semiconductors, but also underscore the potential of utilizing multiple sub-gap excitations synergistically. This combination offers a powerful tool for acquiring insight into photo-physical and photo-chemical behaviors of photo(electro)catalysts with intra-gap states.

Abstract
Transition metal oxides (TMOs) were one of the first photocatalysts used to produce hydrogen from water using solar energy. Despite the emergence of many other genres of photocatalysts over the years, TMO photocatalysts remain dominant due to their easy synthesis and unique physicochemical properties. Various strategies have been developed to enhance the photocatalytic activity of TMOs, but the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency of TMO photocatalysts is still very low (<2 %), which is far below the targeted STH of 10 % for commercial viability. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of several widely used strategies, including oxygen defects control, doping, establishing interfacial junctions, and phase-facet-morphology engineering, that have been adopted to improve TMO photocatalysts. By critically evaluating these strategies and providing a roadmap for future research directions, this article serves as a valuable resource for researchers, students, and professionals seeking to develop efficient energy materials for green energy solutions.

Abstract
Highly efficient Z-scheme MoO3-SrTiO3 heterostructured nanocatalytic systems were engineered via a sol-gel chemical route and exploited in green H2 energy synthesis via overall water splitting. The optical and electronic investigations corroborated the enhancement of the optoelectronic properties of SrTiO3 after the incorporation of MoO3. Emergence of the interfacial charge transfer between SrTiO3 and MoO3 is the driving force, which synergistically triggered the catalytic efficiency of MoO3-SrTiO3 heterostructures. The substitution of Ti4+ by Mo6+ ions led to the suppression of Ti3+ mid-gap states, as the potential involved in the Mo6+/Mo5+ reduction is higher than that in Ti4+/Ti3+. Theoretical studies were employed in order to comprehend the mechanism behind the advancement in the catalytic activity of MoO3-SrTiO3 porous heterostructures, which also possessed a higher surface area. 2% MoO3-SrTiO3 exhibited the optimum catalytic response toward H2 evolution via photochemical, electrochemical, and photo-electrochemical water splitting. 2% MoO3-SrTiO3 evolved H2 at the fourfold higher rate than SrTiO3 with phenomenal 16.06% AQY during photochemical water splitting and photo-degraded MB dye at nearly 88% against the 42% degradation in SrTiO3-led photocatalysis. Electrochemical and photo-electrochemical investigations also manifested the superiority of 2% MoO3-SrTiO3 toward HER, as it exhibited accelerated current and photocurrent densities of 25.02 and 27.45 mA/cm2, respectively, at the 1 V potential. EIS studies demonstrated the improved charge separation efficiency of MoO3-SrTiO3 heterostructures. This work highlights the multi-dimensional approach of obtaining green H2 energy as the sustainable energy source using MoO3@SrTiO3 heterostructures.

Abstract
SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles (NPs) were activated using H2O2 or aqueous HNO3, and pristine and activated NPs were functionalized with a 2,2'-bipyridine phosphonic acid anchoring ligand (1), followed by reaction with RuCl3.3H2O and bpy, RhCl3.3H2O and bpy, or RuCl3.3H2O. The surface-bound metal complex functionalized NPs were used for the photogeneration of H2 from water, and their activity was compared to related systems using TiO2 NPs. The role of pH during surface complexation was found to be important. The NPs were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and solid-state absorption spectroscopies, thermogravimetric analysis mass spectrometry (TGA-MS), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), and the dihydrogen generation was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Our findings indicate that extensively functionalized SrTiO3 or BaTiO3 NPs may perform better than TiO2 NPs for water reduction.

Abstract
Efficient photocatalytic H2 production from wastewater instead of pure water is a dual solution to the environmental and energy crisis, but due to the rapid recombination of photoinduced charge in the photocatalyst and inevitable electron depletion caused by organic pollutants, a significant challenge of dual-functional photocatalysis (simultaneous oxidative and reductive reactions) in single catalyst is designing spatial separation path for photogenerated charges at atomic level. Here, we designed a Pt-doped BaTiO3 single catalyst with oxygen vacancies (BTPOv) that features Pt-O-Ti3+ short charge separation site, which enables excellent H2 production performance (1519 μmol·g-1·h-1) while oxidizing moxifloxacin (k = 0.048 min-1), almost 43 and 98 times than that of pristine BaTiO3 (35 μmol·g-1·h-1 and k = 0.00049 min-1). The efficient charge separation path is demonstrated that the oxygen vacancies extract photoinduced charge from photocatalyst to catalytic surface, and the adjacent Ti3+ defects allow rapid migration of electrons to Pt atoms through the superexchange effect for H* adsorption and reduction, while the holes will be confined in Ti3+ defects for oxidation of moxifloxacin. Impressively, the BTPOv shows an exceptional atomic economy and potential for practical applications, a best H2 production TOF (370.4 h-1) among the recent reported dual-functional photocatalysts and exhibiting excellent H2 production activity in multiple types of wastewaters.

Abstract
Solar-powered photochemical water splitting using suspensions of photocatalyst nanoparticles is an attractive route for economical production of green hydrogen. SrTiO3-based photocatalysts have been intensely investigated due to their stability and recently demonstrated near-100% external quantum yield (EQY) for water splitting using wavelengths below 360 nm. To extend the optical absorption into the visible, SrTiO3 nanoparticles have been doped with various transition metals. Here we demonstrate that doping SrTiO3 nanoparticles with 1% Rh introduces midgap acceptor states which reduce the free electron concentration by 5 orders of magnitude, dramatically reducing built-in potentials which could otherwise separate electron-hole (e-h) pairs. Rhodium states also function as recombination centers, reducing the photocarrier lifetime by nearly 2 orders of magnitude and the maximum achievable EQY to 10%. Furthermore, the absence of built-in electric fields within Rh-doped SrTiO3 nanoparticles suggests that modest e-h separation can be achieved by exploiting a difference in mobility between electrons and holes.

Abstract
ABO3 perovskites offer versatile photoactive nano-templates that can be optimized towards specific technologies, either by means of doping or via heterojunction engineering. SrTiO3 is a well-studied perovskite photocatalyst, with a highly reducing conduction-band edge. Herein we present a Double-Nozzle Flame Spray Pyrolysis (DN-FSP) technology for the synthesis of high crystallinity SrTiO3 nanoparticles with controlled La-doping in tandem with SrTiO3/CuO-heterojunction formation. So-produced La:SrTiO3/CuO nanocatalysts were optimized for photocatalysis of H2O/CH3OH mixtures by varying the La-doping level in the range from 0.25 to 0.9%. We find that, in absence of CuO, the 0.9La:SrTiO3 material achieved maximal efficient photocatalytic H2 production, i.e., 12 mmol g-1 h-1. Introduction of CuO on La:SrTiO3 enhanced selective production of methane CH4. The optimized 0.25La:SrTiO3/0.5%CuO catalyst achieved photocatalytic CH4 production of 1.5 mmol g-1 h-1. Based on XRD, XRF, XPS, BET, and UV-Vis/DRS data, we discuss the photophysical basis of these trends and attribute them to the effect of La atoms in the SrTiO3 lattice regarding the H2-production, plus the effect of interfacial CuO on the promotion of CH4 production. Technology-wise this work is among the first to exemplify the potential of DN-FSP for scalable production of complex nanomaterials such as La:SrTiO3/CuO with a diligent control of doping and heterojunction in a single-step synthesis.

Abstract
Single-atom catalysts (SACs) on hematite photoanodes are efficient cocatalysts to boost photoelectrochemical performance. They feature high atom utilization, remarkable activity, and distinct active sites. However, the specific role of SACs on hematite photoanodes is not fully understood yet: Do SACs behave as a catalytic site or as a spectator? By combining spectroscopic experiments and computer simulations, we demonstrate that single-atom iridium (sIr) catalysts on hematite (α-Fe2O3/sIr) photoanodes act as a true catalyst by trapping holes from hematite and providing active sites for the water oxidation reaction. In situ transient absorption spectroscopy showed a reduced number of holes and shortened hole lifetime in the presence of sIr. This was particularly evident on the second timescale, indicative of fast hole transfer and depletion toward water oxidation. Intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy evidenced a faster hole transfer at the α-Fe2O3/sIr/electrolyte interface compared to that at bare α-Fe2O3. Density functional theory calculations revealed the mechanism for water oxidation using sIr as a catalytic center to be the preferred pathway as it displayed a lower onset potential than the Fe sites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated that sIr introduced a mid-gap of 4d state, key to the fast hole transfer and hole depletion. These combined results provide new insights into the processes controlling solar water oxidation and the role of SACs in enhancing the catalytic performance of semiconductors in photo-assisted reactions.

Abstract
It is of great importance to promote charge separation in photocatalysts for enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. In this work, a type-II heterostructured photocatalyst was constructed by compositing phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 (P-CN) and Rh-doped SrTiO3 (Rh-STO) via a thermal calcination treatment. A series of characterizations were conducted to investigate the structure of heterostructured P-CN/Rh-STO. It was found that Rh-STO interacted with in situ generated P atoms from the decomposition of P-CN during the calcination process, thus leading to the formation of heterojunction of P-CN/Rh-STO. Compared with the single component, i.e., P-CN or Rh-STO, the obtained P-CN/Rh-STO showed superior photocatalytic activity to that of both P-CN and Rh-STO due to the effective charge separation across the heterojunction between P-CN and Rh-STO.

Abstract
The formation of semiconductor heterojunctions and Z-schemes is still a very prominent and efficient strategy of materials chemists to extend the absorption range of semiconductor combinations. Moreover, the spatial separation of photoexcited charge carriers and thereby the reduction of their recombination ultimately lead to increased photocatalytic activities. The present article reviews recent trends in semiconductor heterojunctions and Z-schemes with a focus on hydrogen generation and water splitting, exhibiting specific needs for charge carrier separation. We also included recent material trends, i.e. 2D/2D combinations, direct Z-schemes, MOFs and COFs, and combinations with upconversion materials.

Abstract
The surface states of a semiconductor photocatalyst are essential for interfacial charge transfer in heterogeneous photocatalytic reactions. Here, we report that the light-driven hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of 0.5 mol % Rh-doped rutile increases by more than 30 times compared with that of rutile when ascorbic acid is used as a sacrificial agent. Intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy and surface photovoltage spectroscopy are employed to reveal the impact of surface states on the photo-oxidation reactions. It is found that the adsorption of ascorbic acid molecules dramatically reduces the activity of rutile due to coverage of the HER-active Ti sites. Nevertheless, for Rh-doped rutile, ascorbic acid neutralizes the Rh(IV) sites that would otherwise cause severe recombination of electron-hole pairs and resurrects its photocatalytic performance. This work demonstrates the key role of interfacial chemistry in photocatalytic reactions and provides a strategy for excavating the potential of various photocatalysts.

Abstract
Semiconductor/metal-organic framework (MOF) heterojunctions have demonstrated promising performance for the photoconversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals. To further improve performance, we must understand better the factors which govern charge transfer across the heterojunction interface. However, the effects of interfacial electric fields, which can drive or hinder electron flow, are not commonly investigated in MOF-based heterojunctions. In this study, we highlight the importance of interfacial band bending using two carbon nitride/MOF heterojunctions with either Co-ZIF-L or Ti-MIL-125-NH2. Direct measurement of the electronic structures using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), work function, valence band, and band gap measurements led to the construction of a simple band model at the heterojunction interface. This model, based on the heterojunction components and band bending, enabled us to rationalize the photocatalytic enhancements and losses observed in MOF-based heterojunctions. Using the insight gained from a promising band bending diagram, we developed a Type II carbon nitride/MOF heterojunction with a 2-fold enhanced CO2 photoreduction activity compared to the physical mixture.

Abstract
Slurries of semiconductor particles individually capable of unassisted light-driven water-splitting are modeled to have a promising path to low-cost solar hydrogen generation, but they have had poor efficiencies. Tandem microparticle systems are a clear direction to pursue to increase efficiency. However, light absorption must be carefully managed in a tandem to prevent current mismatch in the subcells, which presents a possible challenge for tandem microwire particles suspended in a liquid. In this work, a Ni-catalyzed Si/TiO2 tandem microwire slurry is used as a stand-in for an ideal bandgap combination to demonstrate proof-of-concept in situ alignment of unassisted water-splitting microwires with an external magnetic field. The Ni hydrogen evolution catalyst is selectively photodeposited at the exposed Si microwire core to serve as the cathode site as well as a handle for magnetic orientation. The frequency distribution of the suspended microwire orientation angles is determined as a function of magnetic field strength under dispersion with and without uplifting microbubbles. After magnetizing the Ni bulb, tandem microwires can be highly aligned in water under a magnetic field despite active dispersion from bubbling or convection.

Abstract
LaTaON2 porous single crystals (PSCs), integrating structural coherence and porous microstructures, will warrant promising photocatalytic performance. The absence of grain boundaries in PSCs ensures rapid photocarrier transportation from bulk to the surface, thereby mitigating photocarriers' recombination. Porous microstructures not only provide ample reachable surface to host photochemical reactions but also reinforce photon-matter interactions by additional photon reflection/scattering. Here, we have synthesized LaTaON2 PSCs via a topotactic route and show significantly improved photocatalytic performance. Efficient water oxidation into O2 has been realized by LaTaON2 PSCs with an apparent quantum efficiency as high as 5.7% at 420 ± 20 nm. Stable overall water splitting into stoichiometric H2 and O2 has also been achieved in a Z-scheme setup using LaTaON2 PSCs as the O2 evolution photocatalyst. These results not only prove that PSCs facilitate photocarrier migrations, which in turn deliver exceptional photocatalytic performance, but also imply that PSCs are useful to reinvigorate conventional semiconductor photocatalysts toward efficient solar energy conversions.

Abstract
As an alternative strategy for H2 production under ambient conditions, solar-driven lignocellulose-to-H2 conversion provides a very attractive approach to store and utilize solar energy sustainably. Exploiting efficient photocatalyst for photocatalytic lignocellulose-to-H2 conversion is of huge significance and remains the key challenge for development of solar H2 generation from lignocellulose. Herein, 2D-2D MoS2 /TiO2 photocatalysts with large 2D nanojunction were constructed for photocatalytic lignocellulose-to-H2 conversion. In this smart structure, the 2D nanojunctions acted as efficient channel for charge transfer from TiO2 to MoS2 to improve charge separation efficiency and thus enhance photocatalytic lignocellulose-to-H2 conversion activity. The 2 % MoS2 /TiO2 photocatalyst showed the highest photocatalytic lignocellulose-to-H2 conversion performance with the maximal H2 generation rate of 201 and 21.4 μmol h-1 g-1 in α-cellulose and poplar wood chip aqueous solution, respectively. The apparent quantum yield at 380 nm reached 1.45 % for 2 % 2D-2D TiO2 /MoS2 photocatalyst in α-cellulose aqueous solution. This work highlights the importance of optimizing the interface structures of photocatalyst for solar-driven lignocellulose-to-H2 conversion.

Abstract
The simultaneous control of the defect species and surface properties of semiconducting materials is a crucial aspect of improving photocatalytic performance, yet it remains challenging. Here, we synthesized Mg-Zr-codoped single-crystalline Ta3N5 (Ta3N5:Mg+Zr) nanoparticles by a brief NH3 nitridation process, exhibiting photocatalytic water reduction activity 45 times greater than that of pristine Ta3N5 under visible light. A coherent picture of the relations between the defect species (comprising reduced Ta, nitrogen vacancies and oxygen impurities), surface properties (associated with dispersion of the Pt cocatalyst), charge carrier dynamics, and photocatalytic activities was drawn. The tuning of defects and simultaneous optimization of surface properties resulting from the codoping evidently resulted in the generation of high concentrations of long-lived electrons in this material as well as the efficient migration of these electrons to evenly distributed surface Pt sites. These effects greatly enhanced the photocatalytic activity. This work highlights the importance and feasibility of improving multiple properties of a catalytic material via a one-step strategy.

Abstract
Optical microcavities have become an attractive platform for precision measurement with merits of ultrahigh sensitivity, miniature footprint and fast response. Despite the achievements of ultrasensitive detection, optical microcavities still face significant challenges in the measurement of biochemical and physical processes with complex dynamics, especially when multiple effects are present. Here we demonstrate operando monitoring of the transition dynamics of a phase-change material via a self-referencing optofluidic microcavity. We use a pair of cavity modes to precisely decouple the refractive index and temperature information of the analyte during the phase-transition process. Through real-time measurements, we reveal the detailed hysteresis behaviors of refractive index during the irreversible phase transitions between hydrophilic and hydrophobic states. We further extract the phase-transition threshold by analyzing the steady-state refractive index change at various power levels. Our technology could be further extended to other materials and provide great opportunities for exploring on-demand dynamic biochemical processes.

Abstract
With the aggravation of environmental pollution and the energy crisis, it is particularly important to develop and design environment-friendly and efficient spontaneous enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalysts for water splitting. Herein novel type-II van der Waals (vdW) GaSe/CN and Ga2SSe/CN heterostructures are proposed through first-principles calculations. Their electronic properties and photocatalytic performance are theoretically analyzed. In particular, their appropriate band gap and band-edge position meet the requirements of the oxygen evolution reaction, and the reaction is thermodynamically feasible in most pH ranges. The unique band alignment of these heterostructured photocatalysts leads to high solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiencies up to 15.11%, which has a good commercial application prospect. More excitingly, with the application of 2% biaxial strain, the smooth progress of the water-splitting reaction of the GaSe/CN and Ga2SSe/CN heterostructures can still be maintained, and the carrier mobility and optical absorption characteristics can be effectively improved. Consequently, these findings suggest that the GaSe/CN and Ga2SSe/CN vdW heterostructures have promising potentials as photocatalysts for water splitting. This work may provide a promising clue for the design of efficient and stable photocatalytic water-splitting catalysts under visible spectroscopy.
