Abstract
B vitamins are intricately involved in various physiological processes vital for health. Their significance is complicated by the heterogeneous landscape of B vitamin distribution in diets and the contributions of the gut microbiota. Here, we delve into the impact of these factors on B vitamins and introduce strategies, with a focus on microbiota-based therapeutic options, to enhance their availability for improved well-being. Additionally, we provide an ecological and evolutionary perspective on the importance of B vitamins to human-microbiota interactions. In the dynamic realms of nutrition and microbiome science, these essential micronutrients continue to play a fundamental role in our understanding of disease development.

Abstract
The composition and function of microbes harbored in the human gastrointestinal lumen have been underestimated for centuries because of the underdevelopment of nucleotide sequencing techniques and the lack of humanized gnotobiotic models. Now, we appreciate that the gut microbiome is an integral part of the human body and exerts considerable roles in host health and diseases. Dietary factors can induce changes in the microbial community composition, metabolism, and function, thereby altering the host immune response, and consequently, may influence disease risks. An imbalance of gut microbiome homeostasis (i.e., dysbiosis) has been linked to several chronic diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, obesity, and diabetes. Remarkable progress has recently been made in better understanding the extent to which the influence of the diet-microbiota interaction on host health outcomes in both animal models and human participants. However, the exact causality of the gut microbiome on the development of diseases is still controversial. In this review, we will briefly describe the general structure and function of the intestine and the process of nutrient absorption in humans. This is followed by a summarization of the recent updates on interactions between gut microbiota and individual micronutrients, including carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin C, folate, iron, and zinc. In the opinion of the authors, these nutrients were identified as representative of vitamins and minerals with sufficient research on their roles in the microbiome. The host responses to the gut microbiome will also be discussed. Future direction in microbiome research, for example, precision microbiome, will be proposed.

Abstract
Alginate oligosaccharide is a kind of prebiotic with broad application prospects. However, little attention is paid to the recovery effect of alginate oligosaccharide on disordered intestinal microecology caused by azithromycin. Therefore, we evaluated the regulatory effect of alginate oligosaccharide and its compound on azithromycin-disturbed gut microbiota in mice via microbiome-metabolomics analysis. The gut microbiota analysis revealed that alginate oligosaccharide and its compound significantly increased the richness and diversity of the gut microbiota which were reduced by azithromycin, with an obvious enrichment of beneficial bacteria such as the Akkermansia genus and Bacteroides acidifaciens, and a remarkable decrease of pathogenic bacteria such as the Staphylococcus genus, which indicated its impact on the gut microbiota dysbiosis. Additionally, the effect of the alginate oligosaccharide compound on regulating the gut microbiota disorder is more significant than that of alginate oligosaccharide. The favorable effects of alginate oligosaccharide were confirmed by beneficial alterations in metabolic effector molecules, which indicated that alginate oligosaccharide and its compound improved metabolic homeostasis via the Bacteroides acidifaciens-fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs) axis and increasing the levels of the intermediate products of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle), such as citric acid, fumaric acid and α-ketoglutaric acid. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the contents of these three metabolites were also positively related to Bacteroides acidifaciens and Bacteroides sartorii populations, suggesting the potential regulatory role of the Bacteroides genus in energy balance through the TCA cycle. This study may provide an innovative dietary strategy for the regulation of intestinal microecological disorders caused by antibiotics, and reveal the prospect of alginate oligosaccharide as an intestinal microecological regulator.

Abstract
Cancer is characterized by increased oxidative stress, an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants. Enhanced ROS accumulation, as a result of metabolic disturbances and signaling aberrations, can promote carcinogenesis and malignant progression by inducing gene mutations and activating pro-oncogenic signaling, providing a possible rationale for targeting oxidative stress in cancer treatment. While numerous antioxidants have demonstrated therapeutic potential, their clinical efficacy in cancer remains unproven. Here, we review the rationale for, and recent advances in, pre-clinical and clinical research on antioxidant therapy in cancer, including targeting ROS with nonenzymatic antioxidants, such as NRF2 activators, vitamins, N-acetylcysteine and GSH esters, or targeting ROS with enzymatic antioxidants, such as NOX inhibitors and SOD mimics. In addition, we will offer insights into prospective therapeutic options for improving the effectiveness of antioxidant therapy, which may expand its applications in clinical cancer treatment.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with the microbial composition of the gut and its metabolites. Akkermansia muciniphila is a probiotic that exerts a significant alleviative or therapeutic effect on host enteritis. This study was designed to determine the protective effect and potential mechanism underlying the secretion of β-acetylaminohexosidase (Amuc_2109) by A. muciniphila against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. C57BL/6 mice were gavaged with Amuc_2109 for 21 days, and during the last seven days of treatment, they drank DSS dissolved in their drinking water to induce colitis. Our results showed that supplementation with Amuc_2109 improved DSS-induced colitis as evidenced by lowered disease activity index (DAI) scores, reduced weight loss, increased colon length, and inhibited oxidative stress. In addition, Amuc_2109 inhibited the overexpression of inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and the NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in DSS-induced colitis. Furthermore, supplementation with Amuc_2109 also restored the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin, claudin-1). Further analysis of fecal microbial 16S rRNA sequences showed that Amuc_2109 reshaped the intestinal microbiota. While the anti-inflammatory effects of Amuc_2109 were only manifested with the wild-type protein, the anti-inflammatory effects were completely lost after the mutation of its key catalytic amino acids rendered Amuc_2109 inactive. In summary, these findings demonstrate the potential of Amuc_2109, as a therapeutic agent for ulcerative colitis. We posit that it will provide additional assistance in the prevention and treatment of mucus layer-related diseases such as ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
A diverse range of symbiotic gut bacteria codevelops with the host and is considered a metabolic "organ" that not only facilitates harvesting of nutrients from the dietary components but also produces a class of metabolites. Many metabolites of gut microbes have an important impact on host health. For example, an inventory of metabolic intermediates derived from bacterial protein fermentation may affect host physiology and pathophysiology. Additionally, gut microbiota can convert cholesterol to bile acids and further into secondary bile acids which can conversely modulate microbial community. Moreover, new research identifies that microbes synthesize vitamins for us in the colon. Here, we will review data implicating a major class of bacterial metabolites through breaking down dietary fiber we cannot process, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), as crucial executors of alteration of immune mechanisms, regulation of metabolic homeostasis, and neuroprotective effects to combat disease and improve health.
