Hybrid Organic Tandem Solar Cell Comprising Small-Molecule Bottom and Polymer:Fullerene Top Subcells Fabricated by Thin-Film Transfer

Investigation of Polymer/Si Thin Film Tandem Solar Cell Using TCAD Numerical Simulation

The current study introduces a two-terminal (2T) thin-film tandem solar cell (TSC) comprised of a polymer-based top sub cell and a thin crystalline silicon (c-Si) bottom sub cell. The photoactive layer of the top sub cell is a blend of PDTBTBz-2F as a polymer donor and PC₇₁BM as a fullerene acceptor. Initially, a calibration of the two sub cells is carried out against experimental studies, providing a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.88% for the top sub cell and 14.26% for the bottom sub cell. Upon incorporating both sub cells in a polymer/Si TSC, the resulting cell shows a PCE of 20.45% and a short circuit current density (J_sc) of 13.40 mA/cm². Then, we optimize the tandem performance by controlling the valence band offset (VBO) of the polymer top cell. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of varying the top absorber defect density and the thicknesses of both absorber layers in an attempt to obtain the maximum obtainable PCE. After optimizing the tandem cell and at the designed current matching condition, the J_sc and PCE of the tandem cell are improved to 16.43 mA/cm² and 28.41%, respectively. Based on this TCAD simulation study, a tandem configuration established from an all thin-film model may be feasible for wearable electronics applications. All simulations utilize the Silvaco Atlas package where the cells are subjected to standard one Sun (AM1.5G, 1000 W/m²) spectrum illumination.

Ionically Gated Small-Molecule OPV: Interfacial Doping of Charge Collector and Transport Layer

We demonstrate an improvement in the performance of organic photovoltaic (OPV) systems based on small molecules by ionic gating via controlled reversible n-doping of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated on fullerene electron transport layers (ETLs): C₆₀ and C₇₀. Such electric double-layer charging (EDLC) doping, achieved by ionic liquid (IL) charging, allows tuning of the electronic concentration in MWCNTs and the fullerene planar acceptor layers, increasing it by orders of magnitude. This leads to the decrease of the series and increase of the shunt resistances of OPVs and allows use of thick (up to 200 nm) ETLs, increasing the durability of OPVs. Two stages of OPV enhancement are described upon the increase of gating bias V_g: at small (or even zero) V_g, the extended interface of ILs and porous transparent MWCNTs is charged by gating, and the fullerene charge collector is significantly improved, becoming an ohmic contact. This changes the S-shaped J-V curve via improving the electron collection by an n-doped MWCNT cathode with an ohmic interfacial contact. The J-V curves further improve at higher gating bias V_g due to the increase of the Fermi level and decrease of the MWCNT work function. At the next qualitative stage, the acceptor fullerene layer becomes n-doped by electron injection from MWCNTs while ions of ILs penetrate into the fullerene. At this step, the internal built-in field is created within OPV, which helps in exciton dissociation and charge separation/transport, increasing further the J_sc and the fill factor. The ionic gating concept demonstrated here for most simple classical planar small-molecule OPV cells can be potentially applied to more complex highly efficient hybrid devices, such as perovskite photovoltaic with an ETL or a hole transport layer, providing a new way to tune their properties via controllable and reversible interfacial doping of charge collectors and transport layers.

Advances in Solution-Processed Multijunction Organic Solar Cells

The efficiency of organic solar cells can benefit from multijunction device architectures, in which energy losses are substantially reduced. Herein, recent developments in the field of solution-processed multijunction organic solar cells are described. Recently, various strategies have been investigated and implemented to improve the performance of these devices. Next to developing new materials and processing methods for the photoactive and interconnecting layers, specific layers or stacks are designed to increase light absorption and improve the photocurrent by utilizing optical interference effects. These activities have resulted in power conversion efficiencies that approach those of modern thin film photovoltaic technologies. Multijunction cells require more elaborate and intricate characterization procedures to establish their efficiency correctly and a critical view on the results and new insights in this matter are discussed. Application of multijunction cells in photoelectrochemical water splitting and upscaling toward a commercial technology is briefly addressed.

Poly(dimethylsiloxane) Stamp Coated with a Low-Surface-Energy, Diffusion-Blocking, Covalently Bonded Perfluoropolyether Layer and Its Application to the Fabrication of Organic Electronic Devices by Layer Transfer

It is demonstrated that a stamp composed of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) bulk and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) coating fabricated by a simple dip-coating method has the following properties that are ideal for the transfer patterning of various materials. Deposited by a condensation reaction between PDMS and PFPE molecules as well as the adjacent PFPE molecules, the PFPE coating has a strong adhesion to the PDMS surface and strong internal cohesion, while providing a low energy surface. Furthermore, it is found to function as a bidirectional diffusion barrier: it effectively prevents organic small molecules deposited on the stamp from being absorbed into free volumes of PDMS; it also prevents PDMS oligomers from migrating onto the layer to be transferred, thereby avoiding the contamination of that layer. Morphological and elemental characterization of the surfaces of the transferred organic semiconductor and graphene layers confirms a successful transfer with a high degree of surface cleanliness. The quality of interfaces mechanically bonded using the PFPE-coated stamps and the cleanliness of the transferred layers are remarkably high that the electronic functions of a transfer-bonded organic heterojunction are comparable to those of the same interface formed by vacuum deposition, and that the charge transport across the transfer-bonded graphene-graphene and graphene-MoO₃ interfaces is efficient. Our results demonstrate that the PFPE-coated stamp enables patterned depositions of materials with high quality interfaces while avoiding a high temperature or wet process.

Eliminating the solvent blocking requirement of interconnection layers in polymer tandem solar cells by thin-film transfer technique

Interconnection layers (ICLs) for polymer tandem solar cells reported so far are limited in materials' choice and layer structure, because of a requirement that the ICLs must prevent the penetration of solvents used for the top cells. In this research, it is demonstrated that depositing the active layer of the top subcell using a dry thin-film transfer technique allows for incorporation of an ICL composed of vacuum deposited materials in a polymer tandem cell, providing a large degree of freedom in ICL design. Specifically, a polymer tandem solar cell was fabricated using an ICL composed of bathocuproine:silver/silver islands/1,4,5,8,9,11-hexaazatriphenylene hexacarbonitrile (BCP:Ag/Ag islands/HAT-CN), where the thicknesses of the BCP:Ag and Ag island layers are precisely controlled at the nanoscale to facilitate the transport of electrons generated in the bottom subcell and to ensure their efficient recombination with holes generated in the top subcell. Consequently, the tandem device featuring the optimized ICL, whose active layers are composed of poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PC61BM) and poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2-ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b']dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)]:[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PCPDTBT:PC71BM), exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.20 V, which is equal to the sum of the open-circuit voltages of the two subcells, with a fill factor (FF) of 0.60 almost identical to the FFs of the subcells.
