Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, several studies have observed that chronic hepatitis B virus infection is associated with the pathogenesis of kidney disease. However, the extent of the correlation between hepatitis B virus infection and the chronic kidney disease risk remains controversial. METHODS In the present study, we searched all eligible literature in seven databases in English and Chinese. The random effects model was used to conduct a meta-analysis. Quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Scale. RESULTS In this analysis, a total of 31 studies reporting the association between hepatitis B virus infection and chronic kidney disease risk were included. The results showed a significant positive association between hepatitis B virus infection and the risk of chronic kidney disease (pooled OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.12-1.29), which means that hepatitis B virus increases the risk of developing chronic kidney disease. CONCLUSION This study found that hepatitis B virus infection was associated with a significantly increased risk of chronic kidney disease. However, the current study still cannot directly determine this causal relationship. Thus, more comprehensive prospective longitudinal studies are needed in the future to provide further exploration and explanation of the association between hepatitis B virus and the risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD), anemia, and iron deficiency are global health issues affecting individuals in both high-income and low-income countries. In pregnancy, both CKD and iron deficiency anemia increase the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including increased maternal morbidity and mortality, stillbirth, perinatal death, preterm birth, and low birthweight. However, it is unknown to which extent iron deficiency anemia contributes to adverse outcomes in CKD pregnancy. Furthermore, little is known regarding the prevalence, pathophysiology, and treatment of iron deficiency and anemia in pregnant women with CKD. Therefore, there are many unanswered questions regarding optimal management with oral or i.v. iron and recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) in these women. In this review, we present a short overview of the (patho)physiology of anemia in healthy pregnancy and in people living with CKD. We present an evaluation of the literature on iron deficiency, anemia, and nutritional deficits in pregnant women with CKD; and we evaluate current knowledge gaps. Finally, we propose research priorities regarding anemia in pregnant women with CKD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Women of reproductive age with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are recognised to have decreased fertility and a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. How often CKD afflicts women of reproductive age is not well known. This study aimed to evaluate the burden of CKD and associated birth rates in an entire region. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study including women of childbearing age in Stockholm during 2006-2015. We estimated the prevalence of "probable CKD" by the presence of an ICD-10 diagnosis of CKD, a single estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or history of maintenance dialysis. By linkage with the Swedish Medical Birth Register we identified births during the subsequent three years from study inclusion and evaluated birth rates. RESULTS We identified 817,730 women in our region, of whom 55% had at least one creatinine measurement. A total of 3938 women were identified as having probable CKD, providing an age-averaged CKD prevalence of 0.50%. Women with probable CKD showed a lower birth rate 3 years after the index date (35.7 children per 1000 person years) than the remaining women free from CKD (46.5 children per 1000 person years). CONCLUSION As many as 0.50% of individuals in this cohort had probable CKD, defined on the basis of at least one eGFR<60 ml/min1.73 m2 test result, dialysis treatment (i.e. CKD stages 3-5) or an ICD-10 diagnosis of CKD. This prevalence is lower than previous estimates. Women with probable CKD, according to a study mainly capturing CKD 3-5, had a lower birth rate than those without CKD, illustrating the challenges of this population to successfully conceive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence links outdoor air pollution and declined renal function but the relationship between household air pollution and renal function is not well understood. METHODS Using cross-sectional data from the multi-provincial INTERMAP-China Prospective Study, we collected blood samples and questionnaire information on stove use and socio-demographic factors. We calculated estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from serum creatinine to assess renal function. Participants with eGFR <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 were defined as having chronic kidney disease (CKD) in this analysis. Generalized estimating equations were used to estimate the association of household fuel with renal function and prevalent CKD in models adjusting for confounders. RESULTS Among the 646 enrolled adults (40-79y; 56% female), one-third exclusively used clean fuel (gas and electric) cookstoves and 11% of northern China participants (n = 49 of 434) used only clean fuel heaters, whereas the rest used solid fuel. In multivariable models, use of solid fuel cookstoves was associated with 0.17 ml/min/1.73 m2 (95% CI: -0.30, 0.64) higher eGFR and 19% (0.86, 1.64) higher prevalence of CKD than exclusive clean fuel use. Greater intensity of solid fuel use was associated with 0.25 ml/min/1.73 m2 (-0.71, 0.21) lower eGFR per 5 stove-use years, though the confidence intervals included the null, while greater current intensity of indoor solid fuel use was associated with 1.02 (1.00, 1.04) higher prevalent CKD per 100 stove-use days per year. Larger associations between current solid fuel use and intensity of use with lower eGFR and prevalent CKD were observed among participants in southern China, those with hypertension or diabetes (eGFR only), and females (CKD only), through these groups had small sample sizes and some confidence intervals included the null. CONCLUSION We found inconsistent evidence associating household solid fuel use and renal function in this cross-sectional study of peri-urban Chinese adults.

Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health problem in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although CKD prevalence has been rapidly increasing in LMICs, particularly in Asia, quantitative studies on the current epidemiology of CKD in this region are limited. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of CKD stages 3-5 in LMICs in Asia, by subregion, country economy classification, identification of CKD, traditional and non-traditional risk factors. A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies was conducted through a literature search of seven electronic databases and grey literature search published until November 2021. The Newcastle-Ottawa quality assessment scale (NOS) was used to assess the risk of bias of each study. A random-effects model was used to estimate pooled prevalence. The protocol is registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO CRD42019120519). Of 4,548 potentially relevant records, 110 studies with moderate and high quality were included with 4,760,147 subjects. The average prevalence (95% CI) of CKD stages 3-5 in 14 LMICs in Asia was 11.2% (9.3-13.2%). The prevalence of CKD stages 3-5 was varied among subregions and country economic classification. CKD prevalence was 8.6% (7.2-10.2%) in east Asia, 12.0% (7.7-17.0%) in south-east Asia, 13.1% (8.7-18.2%) in western Asia, and 13.5% (9.5-18.0%) in south Asia. CKD prevalence was 9.8% (8.3-11.5%) in upper-middle-income countries and 13.8% (9.9-18.3%) in lower-middle-income countries. Prevalence of CKD stage 3-5 in LMICs in Asia is comparable to global prevalence. High level of heterogeneity was observed. Study of factors and interventions that lead to the delay of CKD progression is needed.

BACKGROUND The activity of hepatitis B virus (HBV) as a risk factor for the incidence and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has not been clarified. AIM We evaluated the impact of infection with HBV on the risk of CKD in the general population. MATERIAL AND METHODS We carried out a systematic review of the published medical literature to assess whether a relationship between hepatitis B infection and an increased risk of CKD in the adult general population occurs. We adopted the random effects model of DerSimonian and Laird to provide a summary estimate of the risk of chronic kidney disease (defined by lowered glomerular filtration rate and/or detectable proteinuria) with HBV infection across the published studies. Meta-regression and stratified analyses were also performed. RESULTS We retrieved 33 studies (n = 7,849,849 patients) published in 26 different articles, and separate meta-analyses were performed according to the outcome. Pooling results from cohort studies (11 studies, n = 1,056,645 patients) demonstrated a relationship between positive HBV serologic status and increased incidence of CKD, the summary estimate for adjusted HR with HBV across the surveys, 1.40 (95% CI, 1.16-1.69) (P < .001). Between-study heterogeneity was noted (Q value, 49.5, P < .0001). No relationship between HBV and prevalence of CKD was noted in the subset of cross-sectional studies (10 studies; n = 3,222,545 patients), adjusted OR, 1.04 (95% IC 0.90-1.218; P = .5). Meta-regression analysis reported a relationship between positive HBsAg status and incidence of CKD in the general population (P < .015). CONCLUSIONS It appears that exposure to HBV infection seems to be associated with an increased risk of developing CKD in the adult general population. Studies aimed to understand the mechanisms responsible of such association are under way.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to understand the prevalence of reduced kidney function in China by sociodemographics and geographical region, and to examine health correlates of reduced kidney function. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Participants were 6706 adults ≥60 years from the 2015-2016 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. OUTCOME MEASURES Reduced kidney function was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m². The estimated glomerular filtration rate was calculated with the creatinine-cystatin C equation developed by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration in 2012. The associations between reduced kidney function and potential risk factors were analysed using multivariable regression models. RESULTS The prevalence of reduced kidney function was 10.3% (95% CI: 9.3% to 11.2%), corresponding to approximately 20 million older adults. Multivariable analysis showed that older adults with hypertension (β=-3.61, 95% CI: -4.42 to 2.79), cardiac disease (β=-1.90, 95% CI: -2.93 to 0.86), who had a stroke (β=-3.75, 95% CI: -6.35 to 1.15), kidney disease (β=-3.88, 95% CI: -5.62 to 2.13), slow gait speed (β=-2.23, 95% CI: -3.27 to 1.20), and living in the South (β=-4.38, 95% CI: -5.95 to 2.80) and South Central (β=-1.85, 95% CI: -3.15 to 0.56) were more significantly likely to have reduced kidney function. CONCLUSIONS Kidney function screening should be performed, especially in patients with hypertension, cardiac disease and who had a stroke. More efforts should be paid to improve the kidney function of older adults living in the South and South Central parts of China.

Abstract
Objectives To estimate the relationship between sleep quality and depression, among Han and Manchu ethnicities, in a rural Chinese population. Methods A sample of 8,888 adults was selected using a multistage cluster and random sampling method. Sleep quality was evaluated using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Depressive symptoms were assessed via the Center for Epidemiological Survey, Depression Scale (CES-D). Logistic regression was conducted to assess associations between sleep quality and depression. Results The prevalence of poor sleep quality and depression in the Manchus (20.74% and 22.65%) was significantly lower than that in the Hans (29.57% and 26.25%), respectively. Depressive participants had higher odds ratios of global and all sub PSQI elements than non-depressive participants, both among the Hans and the Manchus. Additive interactions were identified between depressive symptoms and ethnicity with global and four sub-PSQI elements, including subjective sleep quality, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication and daytime dysfunction. Conclusions The findings revealed that the prevalence of poor sleep quality and depression among the Hans was greater than among the Manchus. Depression was associated with higher odds of poor sleep quality.
