Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between cognitive neurodegenerative disease and oral diseases has been under great interest recently. Several studies have suggested a connection between periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or other neurodegenerative disorders. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to review the potential mechanisms between oral diseases and neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS The study was executed as a literature review of English-language publications from 2018-2022. The databases used for the search were PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search phrases used were "neurodegenerative diseases" AND "oral health" and "neurodegenerative diseases" AND "oral diseases." RESULTS The linkage between the two disease groups was observed in several distinct publications and several potential mechanisms were found. The link between periodontitis and AD proved to be the most significant. The effect was accentuated in elderly people where individuals possessed also other risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases and had generally worse oral health conditions. CONCLUSIONS Oral diseases may be risks for neurodegenerative changes along many different pathways. Good oral health should be acknowledged as a potential preventative or risk-reducing act against neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older people receiving home-based care (HBC) often face barriers to access preventive oral health care (OHC) and dental treatments. Leading to deterioration of their oral healthcare. It is further deteriorated by factors such as increasing burden of systemic diseases, medicinal side effects, limited mobility, financial constraints and lack of professional OHC at home. Older people also struggle to maintain necessary daily oral hygiene, leading to malnutrition, weight loss, and a risk of a further health degradation. This cross-sectional survey aimed to investigate the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and their associated factors in HBC recipients. METHODS 5,280 older people (≥ 60 years) living in Hamburg, who were in need of care and insured with statutory health insurance DAK-Gesundheit received the questionnaire, which included the German version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP G-14) and, the EQ-5D health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure as well as further questions regarding the extent of informal social support, subjective oral health status, oral health behaviour, subjective cognitive status, and socio-demographic variables. RESULTS The participants (n = 1,622) had a median age of 83.2 years, with 72.0% of the sample being female. Nearly two thirds of the sample reported that their independence or abilities were significantly impaired (care level 2). Regarding oral health impacts, 40.0% of the participants reported experiencing at least one of the fourteen possible prevalent impacts of the OHIP-G14 fairly often or very often. A multivariate regression model on the severity of oral health impacts revealed, that a better HRQoL, a positive perception of one's own dental status, fewer visits to dental practices, and no need for support in OHC were associated with better OHRQoL. Conversely, respondents with a negative perception of their oral health status, more frequent visits to a dental practice, a need for support in OHC, and subjective memory impairment showed poorer OHRQoL. CONCLUSIONS The results highlight the risk for poor oral health among older people in HBC. We conclude that there is an urgent need to prioritise oral health, especially as poor oral health can further compromise the systemic wellbeing of these already care dependent population.

Abstract
Dementia is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In this study, we analyzed the association of periodontal treatment with the risk of death in patients with dementia. The analyzed data were obtained by linking the National Health Insurance Corporation claims data between 2002 and 2018 to the Statistics Korea death registry. In total, 1,131,406 patients with dementia aged ≥ 65 years had undergone dental treatment during the study period. Time-dependent Cox proportional hazards model was performed. The mortality rate was approximately 10% among the patients with dementia. The 17-years cumulative survival rates for patients who received periodontal treatment and their untreated counterparts were 83.5% and 71.5%, respectively. The crude hazard ratio of the periodontal group was approximately twice as high as that of the non-periodontal group (1.99; P < 0.001). Furthermore, in the regression model that was adjusted for socio-demographic variables and systematic chronic diseases, the risk of death in the non-periodontal group was approximately 1.83 times higher than that of the periodontal group (P < 0.00). These findings suggest that preventive periodontal treatment may decrease mortality risk in older people with dementia.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association between consistent subjective cognitive decline and fall occurrence six months later. METHOD A cohort study was conducted at two time points in community-dwelling older adults. The first survey was conducted from May to July 2020 and the second from November 2020 to January 2021. Older adults without missing data who had not fallen during the past year were analyzed. The questionnaire included sociodemographic data, a questionnaire for medical checkup of older adults, and a frailty screening index. We divided the participants into three groups according to the occurrence of subjective cognitive decline (SCD): 1) no SCD (did not complain of SCD at both time points), 2) unstable SCD (complained of SCD once), and 3) consecutive SCD (consistently complained of SCD). Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between fall occurrence and SCD. Fall occurrences were obtained from the second survey. RESULTS In total, 322 participants were included in the analysis. The numbers of patients with no SCD, unstable SCD, and consecutive SCD were 226 (70.2%), 61 (19.0%), and 35 (10.9%), respectively. In the second survey, the number of falls was 26 (8.1%). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that consecutive SCD was associated with fall occurrence, even after adjusting for age, sex, comorbidity, cohabitants, and frailty status (OR:3.143, 95% CI:1.076-9.388); however, unstable SCD was not (OR:2.348, 95% CI:0.816-6.468). CONCLUSION Consistent complaints of SCD were associated with the occurrence of falls. We highlighted the importance of evaluating SCD over time when considering falls.

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate dentition status amongst community-dwelling older adults and its association with frailty and cognitive impairment. Methodology One thousand forty-seven community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years were surveyed in an epidemiologic population-based cohort study in Singapore between April 2015 and August 2016. Data on demographics, dentition status, chronic diseases, activities and instrumental activities on daily-living, cognition (age- and education-specific MMSE cut-offs), frailty (FRAIL scale), perceived health and functional status were collected. Multiple logistic regression was performed to examine the association between dentition, frailty and cognition. Results Mean age of participants was 71.2 ± 5.5 years. The prevalence of denture use was 70.7% and edentulism 7.9%. Compared to edentulousness, having teeth was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment and higher odds of being robust or pre-frail. Denture-wearers compared with edentulous persons were less likely to be male, had higher education level and more likely be robust or pre-frail. Conclusion and implications There were significant associations between dentition status, frailty and cognition in our study where those with remining teeth and / or dentures had better overall outcomes. As oral health, frailty and cognitive impairments are all modifiable risk factors for healthy ageing, countries should consider population level screening for oral health, frailty and cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Over the past century, we have witnessed an increase in life-expectancy due to public health measures; however, we have also seen an increase in susceptibility to chronic disease and frailty. Microbiome dysfunction may be linked to many of the conditions that increase in prevalence with age, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and cancer, suggesting the need for further research on these connections. Moreover, because both non-modifiable (e.g., age, sex, genetics) and environmental (e.g., diet, infection) factors can influence the microbiome, there are vast opportunities for the use of interventions related to the microbiome to promote lifespan and healthspan in aging populations. To understand the mechanisms mediating many of the interventions discussed in this review, we also provide an overview of the gut microbiome's relationships with the immune system, aging, and the brain. Importantly, we explore how inflammageing (low-grade chronic inflammation that often develops with age), systemic inflammation, and senescent cells may arise from and relate to the gut microbiome. Furthermore, we explore in detail the complex gut-brain axis and the evidence surrounding how gut dysbiosis may be implicated in several age-associated neurodegenerative diseases. We also examine current research on potential interventions for healthspan and lifespan as they relate to the changes taking place in the microbiome during aging; and we begin to explore how the reduction in senescent cells and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) interplay with the microbiome during the aging process and highlight avenues for further research in this area.
