Nanostructured CeO2 photocatalysts: optimizing surface chemistry, morphology, and visible-light absorption

Emerging photocatalytic applications of cerium dioxide (CeO2) include green hydrogen production, CO2 conversion to fuels, and environmental remediation of various toxic molecules. These applications leverage the oxygen storage capacity and tunable surface chemistry of CeO2 to photocatalyze the chosen reaction, but many open questions remain regarding the fundamental physics of photocatalysis over CeO2. The commonly ascribed 'bandgap' of CeO2 (∼3.1 eV) differs fundamentally from other photocatalytic oxides such as TiO2; UV light excites an electron from the CeO2 valence band into a 4f state, generating a polaron as the lattice distorts around the localized charge. Researchers often disregard the distinction between the 4f state and a traditional, delocalized conduction band, resulting in ambiguity regarding mechanisms of charge transfer and visible-light absorption. This review summarizes modern literature regarding CeO2 photocatalysis and discusses commonly reported photocatalytic reactions and visible light-sensitization strategies. We detail the often misunderstood fundamental physics of CeO2 photocatalysis and supplement previous work with original computational insights. The exceptional progress and remaining challenges of CeO2-based photocatalysts are highlighted, along with suggestions for further research directions based on the observed gaps in current understanding.

Dissolution Heterogeneity Observed in Anisotropic Ruthenium Dioxide Nanocrystals via Liquid-Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy

Noble metal oxides such as ruthenium dioxide are highly active electrocatalysts for anodic reactions in acidic electrolytes, but dissolution during electrochemical operation impedes wide-scale applications in renewable energy technologies. Improving the fundamental understanding of the dissolution dynamics of application-relevant morphologies such as nanocrystals is critical for the grid-scale implementation of these materials. Herein, we report the nanoscale heterogeneity observed via liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy during ruthenium dioxide nanocrystal dissolution under oxidizing conditions. Single-crystalline ruthenium dioxide nanocrystals enabled the direct observation of dissolution along different crystallographic facets, allowing an unprecedented direct comparison of crystal facet stability. The nanoscale observations revealed substantial heterogeneity in the relative stability of crystallographic facets across different nanocrystals, attributed to the nanoscale strains present in these crystals. These findings highlight the importance of nanoscale heterogeneity in determining macroscale properties such as electrocatalyst stability and provide a characterization methodology that can be integrated into next-generation electrocatalyst discovery efforts.

Clickable bisreactive small gold nanoclusters for preparing multifunctionalized nanomaterials: application to photouncaging of an anticancer molecule

In this study, we successfully synthesized a small-sized gold nanocluster (2 nm) coated with homogeneous tripeptides bearing azido and amino groups that enable facile multifunctionalizations. Using sodium phenoxide to reduce tetrachloroauric(iii) acid in the presence of the cysteine-containing tripeptide, we efficiently prepared the gold nanoclusters without damaging the azido group. We then utilized this clickable bisreactive nanocluster as a versatile platform for synthesizing multifunctionalized gold nanomaterials. The resulting nanoclusters were conjugated with an anticancer compound connected to an indolizine moiety for photoinduced uncaging, a photodynamic therapy agent acting as a photosensitizer for uncaging, and a cyclic RGD peptide. The cytotoxicity of the multifunctionalized gold nanoclusters was demonstrated through red light irradiation of human lung cancer-derived A549 cells treated with the synthesized nanomaterials. The significant cytotoxicity exhibited by the cells underscores the potential utility of this method in advanced cancer therapies.

Elucidation of the electronic structures of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters by electrochemical measurements

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) with sizes of approximately 2 nm or less have different physical/chemical properties from those of the bulk metals owing to quantum size effects. Metal NCs, which can be size-controlled and heterometal doped at atomic accuracy, are expected to be the next generation of important materials, and new metal NCs are reported regularly. However, compared with conventional materials such as metal complexes and relatively large metal nanoparticles (>2 nm), these metal NCs are still underdeveloped in terms of evaluation and establishment of application methods. Electrochemical measurements are one of the most widely used methods for synthesis, application, and characterisation of metal NCs. This review summarizes the basic knowledge of the electrochemistry and experimental techniques, and provides examples of the reported electronic states of thiolate-protected gold NCs elucidated by electrochemical approaches. It is expected that this review will provide useful information for researchers starting to study metal NCs.

Effects of CuO nanoparticles in composted sewage sludge on rice-soil systems and their potential human health risks

The release of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) into sewage systems is worrisome due to their potential impact on crop-soil systems that are amended with sewage sludge. This study aimed to investigate the effects of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) in composted sewage sludge (CSS) on rice-soil systems and to assess the health risks associated with consuming CuO NP-contaminated rice produced by CSS amendment. CSS was treated with three doses of CuO NPs, resulting in Cu levels below the sludge limits (1500 mg Cu kg-1) for reuse as a soil amendment. Results showed that CuO NPs in CSS at environmentally acceptable levels had no negative effect on rice growth and yield. In fact, they enhanced biomass production, tillering capacity, and soil fertility by increasing N and K levels in the soil. In addition, CuO NPs in CSS (450-1450 mg Cu kg-1) promoted the accumulation of macro- and micro-minerals in rice grains, thereby improving the nutritional value of rice. However, Cu contamination in CSS led to elevated levels of toxic metals, especially As, in rice grains, posing potential health risks to both adults and children. In the presence of higher CuO NPs contamination in CSS, the hazard quotient of As exceeded one, indicating an increased risks of toxic metal exposure via rice consumption. This study raises concerns about potential long-term threats to human health posed by MNPs contamination in CSS and highlights the need to reevaluate the permissible limits of hazardous elements in sludge to ensure its safe reuse in agriculture.

P-Band Intermediate States Mediate Electron Transfer at Confined Nanoscale

In this Perspective, mainly based on the model of structural water molecules (SWs) as bright color emitters, we briefly summarize the development and theoretical elaboration of P-band intermediate state (PBIS) theory as well as its application in several typical catalytic redox reactions. In addition, with a simple equation (2∫ψ2σ1' + ∫ψ2σ2 + ∫ψ2π = 1), we clearly define how the interface states correlate with the three basic parameters of heterogeneous catalysis (conversion, selectivity, and stability), and what is the dynamic nature of catalytic active sites. Overall, the proposal of SW-dominated PBIS theory establishes an internal physical connection between the decay kinetics of excited electrons and the catalytic reaction kinetics and provides new insights into the physical origin of photoluminescence emission of low-dimensional quantum nanodots and the physical nature of nanoconfinement and nanoconfined catalysis.

Recent Progress on Ligand-Protected Metal Nanoclusters in Photocatalysis

The reckless use of non-replenishable fuels by the growing population for energy and the resultant incessant emissions of hazardous gases and waste products into the atmosphere have insisted that scientists fabricate materials capable of managing these global threats at once. In recent studies, photocatalysis has been employed to focus on utilizing renewable solar energy to initiate chemical processes with the aid of semiconductors and highly selective catalysts. A wide range of nanoparticles has showcased promising photocatalytic properties. Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) with sizes below 2 nm, stabilized by ligands, show discrete energy levels and exhibit unique optoelectronic properties, which are vital to photocatalysis. In this review, we intend to compile information on the synthesis, true nature, and stability of the MNCs decorated with ligands and the varying photocatalytic efficiency of metal NCs concerning changes in the aforementioned domains. The review discusses the photocatalytic activity of atomically precise ligand-protected MNCs and their hybrids in the domain of energy conversion processes such as the photodegradation of dyes, the oxygen evolution reaction (ORR), the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and the CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂RR).

From M6 to M12, M19 and M38 molecular alloy Pt-Ni carbonyl nanoclusters: selective growth of atomically precise heterometallic nanoclusters

Heterometallic Chini-type clusters [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (x = 0-6) were obtained by reactions of [Pt₆(CO)₁₂]^2- with Ni-clusters such as [Ni₆(CO)₁₂]^2-, [Ni₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [H₂Ni₁₂(CO)₂₁]^2-, or from [Pt₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [Ni₆(CO)₁₂]^2-. The Pt/Ni composition of [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (x = 0-6) depended on the nature of the reagents employed and their stoichiometry. Reactions of [Pt₉(CO)₁₈]^2- with [Ni₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [H₂Ni₁₂(CO)₂₁]^2-, as well as reactions of [Pt₁₂(CO)₂₄]^2- with [Ni₆(CO)₁₂]^2-, [Ni₉(CO)₁₈]^2- and [H₂Ni₁₂(CO)₂₁]^2-, afforded [Pt_9-xNi_x(CO)₁₈]^2- (x = 0-9) species. [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (x = 1-5) were converted into [Pt_12-xNi_x(CO)₂₁]^4- (x = 2-10) upon heating in CH₃CN at 80 °C, with almost complete retention of the Pt/Ni composition. Reaction of [Pt_12-xNi_x(CO)₂₁]^4- (x ≈ 8) with HBF₄·Et₂O afforded the [HPt_14+xNi_24-x(CO)₄₄]^5- (x ≈ 0.7) nanocluster. Finally, [Pt_19-xNi_x(CO)₂₂]^4- (x = 2-6) could be obtained by heating [Pt_9-xNi_x(CO)₁₈]^2- (x = 1-3) in CH₃CN at 80 °C, or [Pt_6-xNi_x(CO)₁₂]^2- (2-4) in DMSO at 130 °C. The molecular structures of these new alloy nanoclusters have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The site preference of Pt and Ni within their metal cages has been computationally investigated. The electrochemical and IR spectroelectrochemical behavior of [Pt_19-xNi_x(CO)₂₂]^4- (x = 3.11) has been studied and compared to the isostructural homometallic nanocluster [Pt₁₉(CO)₂₂]^4-.

Size Effects of Atomically Precise Gold Nanoclusters in Catalysis

The emergence of ligand-protected, atomically precise gold nanoclusters (NCs) in recent years has attracted broad interest in catalysis due to their well-defined atomic structures and intriguing properties. Especially, the precise formulas of NCs provide an opportunity to study the size effects at the atomic level without complications by the polydispersity in conventional nanoparticles that obscures the relationship between the size/structure and properties. Herein, we summarize the catalytic size effects of atomically precise, thioate-protected gold NCs in the range of tens to hundreds of metal atoms. The catalytic reactions include electrochemical catalysis, photocatalysis, and thermocatalysis. With the precise sizes and structures, the fundamentals underlying the size effects are analyzed, such as the surface area, electronic properties, and active sites. In the catalytic reactions, one or more factors may exert catalytic effects simultaneously, hence leading to different catalytic-activity trends with the size change of NCs. The summary of literature work disentangles the underlying fundamental mechanisms and provides insights into the size effects. Future studies will lead to further understanding of the size effects and shed light on the catalytic active sites and ultimately promote catalyst design at the atomic level.

Toward a new definition of surface energy for late transition metals

Surface energy is a top-importance stability descriptor of transition metal-based catalysts. Here, we combined density functional theory (DFT) calculations and a tiling scheme measuring surface areas of metal structures to develop a simple computational model predicting the average surface energy of metal structures independently of their shape. The metals considered are W, Ru, Co, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au. Lorentzian trends derived from the DFT data proved effective at predicting the surface energy of metallic surfaces but not for metal clusters. We used machine-learning protocols to build an algorithm that improves the Lorentzian trend's accuracy and is able to predict the surface energies of metal surfaces of any crystal structure, i.e., face-centred cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and body-centred cubic, but also of nanostructures and sub-nanometer clusters. The machine-learning neural network takes easy-to-compute geometric features to predict metallic moieties surface energies with a mean absolute error of 0.091 J m^-2 and an R² score of 0.97.

Potential Environmental and Health Implications from the Scaled-Up Production and Disposal of Nanomaterials Used in Biosensors

Biosensors often combine biological recognition elements with nanomaterials of varying compositions and dimensions to facilitate or enhance the operating mechanism of the device. While incorporating nanomaterials is beneficial to developing high-performance biosensors, at the stages of scale-up and disposal, it may lead to the unmanaged release of toxic nanomaterials. Here we attempt to foster connections between the domains of biosensors development and human and environmental toxicology to encourage a holistic approach to the development and scale-up of biosensors. We begin by exploring the toxicity of nanomaterials commonly used in biosensor design. From our analysis, we introduce five factors with a role in nanotoxicity that should be considered at the biosensor development stages to better manage toxicity. Finally, we contextualize the discussion by presenting the relevant stages and routes of exposure in the biosensor life cycle. Our review found little consensus on how the factors presented govern nanomaterial toxicity, especially in composite and alloyed nanomaterials. To bridge the current gap in understanding and mitigate the risks of uncontrolled nanomaterial release, we advocate for greater collaboration through a precautionary One Health approach to future development and a movement towards a circular approach to biosensor use and disposal.

Atomically Precise Platinum Carbonyl Nanoclusters: Synthesis, Total Structure, and Electrochemical Investigation of [Pt27(CO)31]4- Displaying a Defective Structure

The molecular Pt nanocluster [Pt₂₇(CO)₃₁]^4– (1^4–) was obtained by thermal decomposition of [Pt₁₅(CO)₃₀]^2– in tetrahydrofuran under a H₂ atmosphere. The reaction of 1^4– with increasing amounts of HBF₄·Et₂O afforded the previously reported [Pt₂₆(CO)₃₂]^2– (3^2–) and [Pt₂₆(CO)₃₂]⁻ (3^–). The new nanocluster 1^4– was characterized by IR and UV–visible spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, direct-current superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, cyclic voltammetry, IR spectroelectrochemistry (IR SEC), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The cluster displays a cubic-close-packed Pt₂₇ framework generated by the overlapping of four ABCA layers, composed of 3, 7, 11, and 6 atoms, respectively, that encapsulates a fully interstitial Pt₄ tetrahedron. One Pt atom is missing within layer 3, and this defect (vacancy) generates local deformations within layers 2 and 3. These local deformations tend to repair the defect (missing atom) and increase the number of Pt–Pt bonding contacts, minimizing the total energy. The cluster 1^4– is perfectly diamagnetic and displays a rich electrochemical behavior. Indeed, six different oxidation states have been characterized by IR SEC, unraveling the series of 1^n– (n = 3–8) isostructural nanoclusters. Computational studies have been carried out to further support the interpretation of the experimental data.

The synthesis, molecular structure, magnetic properties, computational investigation, electrochemical and IR spectroelectrochemical behavior, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigation of the new multivalent [Pt₂₇(CO)₃₁]⁴⁻ nanocluster are reported.

Fundamentals and applications of metal nanoparticle- enhanced singlet oxygen generation for improved cancer photodynamic therapy

The introduction of nanotechnology in the field of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has proven to have great potential to overcome some of the challenges associated with traditional organic photosensitizers (PS) with respect to their solubility, drug delivery, distribution and site-specific targeting. Other focused areas in PDT involve high singlet oxygen production capability and excitability of PS by deep tissue penetrating light wavelengths. Owing to their very promising optical and surface plasmon resonance properties, combination of traditional PSs with plasmonic metallic nanoparticles like gold and silver nanoparticles results in remarkably high singlet oxygen production and extended excitation property from visible and near-infrared lights. This review summarizes the importance, fundamentals and applications of on plasmonic metallic nanoparticles in PDT. Lastly, we highlight the future prospects of these plasmonic nanoengineering strategies with or without PS combination, to have a significant impact in improving the therapeutic efficacy of cancer PDT.

A Review of State of the Art in Phosphine Ligated Gold Clusters and Application in Catalysis

Atomically precise gold clusters are highly desirable due to their well-defined structure which allows the study of structure-property relationships. In addition, they have potential in technological applications such as nanoscale catalysis. The structural, chemical, electronic, and optical properties of ligated gold clusters are strongly defined by the metal-ligand interaction and type of ligands. This critical feature renders gold-phosphine clusters unique and distinct from other ligand-protected gold clusters. The use of multidentate phosphines enables preparation of varying core sizes and exotic structures beyond regular polyhedrons. Weak gold-phosphorous (Au-P) bonding is advantageous for ligand exchange and removal for specific applications, such as catalysis, without agglomeration. The aim of this review is to provide a unified view of gold-phosphine clusters and to present an in-depth discussion on recent advances and key developments for these clusters. This review features the unique chemistry, structural, electronic, and optical properties of gold-phosphine clusters. Advanced characterization techniques, including synchrotron-based spectroscopy, have unraveled substantial effects of Au-P interaction on the composition-, structure-, and size-dependent properties. State-of-the-art theoretical calculations that reveal insights into experimental findings are also discussed. Finally, a discussion of the application of gold-phosphine clusters in catalysis is presented.

Evaluation of the Effects of Ag, Cu, ZnO and TiO2 Nanoparticles on the Expression Level of Oxidative Stress-Related Genes and the Activity of Antioxidant Enzymes in Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus epidermidis

Although the molecular response of bacteria exposed to metal nanoparticles (NPs) is intensively studied, many phenomena related to their survival, metal uptake, gene expression and protein production are not fully understood. Therefore, this work aimed to study Ag-NPs, Cu-NPs, ZnO-NPs and TiO₂-NPs-induced alterations in the expression level of selected oxidative stress-related genes in connection with the activity of antioxidant enzymes: catalase (CAT), peroxidase (PER) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The methodology used included: the extraction of total RNA and cDNA synthesis, the preparation of primers for selected housekeeping and oxidative stress genes, RT-qPCR reaction and the measurements of CAT, PER and SOD activities. It was established that the treatment of E. coli and S. epidermidis with NPs resulted mainly in the down-regulation of targeted genes, whilst the up-regulation of genes was confirmed in B. cereus. The greatest differences in the relative expression levels of tested genes occurred in B. cereus and S. epidermidis treated with TiO₂-NPs, while in E. coli, they were observed under ZnO-NPs exposure. The changes found were mostly related to the expression of genes encoding proteins with PER and CAT-like activity. Among NPs, ZnO-NPs and Cu-NPs increased the activity of antioxidants in E. coli and B. cereus. In turn, TiO₂-NPs had a major effect on enzymes activity in S. epidermidis. Considering all of the collected results for tested bacteria, it can be emphasised that the impact of NPs on the antioxidant system functioning was dependent on their type and concentration.

Atomically Precise Ni-Pd Alloy Carbonyl Nanoclusters: Synthesis, Total Structure, Electrochemistry, Spectroelectrochemistry, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

The molecular nanocluster [Ni36-xPd5+x(CO)46]6- (x = 0.41) (16-) was obtained from the reaction of [NMe3(CH2Ph)]2[Ni6(CO)12] with 0.8 molar equivalent of [Pd(CH3CN)4][BF4]2 in tetrahydrofuran (thf). In contrast, [Ni37-xPd7+x(CO)48]6- (x = 0.69) (26-) and [HNi37-xPd7+x(CO)48]5- (x = 0.53) (35-) were obtained from the reactions of [NBu4]2[Ni6(CO)12] with 0.9-1.0 molar equivalent of [Pd(CH3CN)4][BF4]2 in thf. After workup, 35- was extracted in acetone, whereas 26- was soluble in CH3CN. The total structures of 16-, 26-, and 35- were determined with atomic precision by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their metal cores adopted cubic close packed structures and displayed both substitutional and compositional disorder, in light of the fact that some positions could be occupied by either Ni or Pd. The redox behavior of these new Ni-Pd molecular alloy nanoclusters was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in situ infrared spectroelectrochemistry. All three compounds 16-, 26-, and 35- displayed several reversible redox processes and behaved as electron sinks and molecular nanocapacitors. Moreover, to gain insight into the factors that affect the current-potential profiles, cyclic voltammograms were recorded at both Pt and glassy carbon working electrodes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments performed for the first time on molecular carbonyl nanoclusters.

Correlating structural rules with electronic properties of ligand-protected alloy nanoclusters

Thiolate protected gold nanoclusters (TPNCs) are a unique class of nanomaterials finding applications in various fields, such as biomedicine, optics, and catalysis. The atomic precision of their structure, characterized through single crystal x-ray diffraction, enables the accurate investigation of their physicochemical properties through electronic structure calculations. Recent experimental efforts have led to the successful heterometal doping of TPNCs, potentially unlocking a large domain of bimetallic TPNCs for targeted applications. However, how TPNC size, bimetallic composition, and location of dopants influence electronic structure is unknown. To this end, we introduce novel structure-property relationships (SPRs) that predict electronic properties such as ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA) of AgAu TPNCs based on physically relevant descriptors. The models are constructed by first generating a hypothetical AgAu TPNC dataset of 368 structures with sizes varying from 36 to 279 metal atoms. Using our dataset calculated with density functional theory (DFT), we employed systematic analyses to unravel size, composition, and, importantly, core-shell effects on TPNC EA and IP behavior. We develop generalized SPRs that are able to predict electronic properties across the AgAu TPNC materials space. The models leverage the same three fundamental descriptors (i.e., size, composition, and core-shell makeup) that do not require DFT calculations and rely only on simple atom counting, opening avenues for high throughput bimetallic TPNC screening for targeted applications. This work is a first step toward finely controlling TPNC electronic properties through heterometal doping using high throughput computational means.
