Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to assess the fracture resistance of monolithic zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate laminate veneers (LVs) fabricated on various incisal preparation designs. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty maxillary central incisors with various preparation designs were 3D-printed, 15 each, including preparation for: (1) LV with feathered-edge design; (2) LV with butt-joint design; (3) LV with palatal chamfer; and (4) full-coverage crown. Restorations were then designed and manufactured from zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) following the contour of a pre-operation scan. Restorations were bonded to the assigned preparation using resin cement and following the manufacturer's instructions. Specimens were then subjected to 10,000 thermocycles at 5 to 55°C with a dwell time of 30 s. The fracture strength of specimens was then assessed using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1.0 mm/min. One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction multiple comparisons were used to assess the fracture strength differences between the test groups (α = 0.001). Descriptive fractographic analysis of specimens was carried out with scanning electron microscopy images. RESULTS Complete coverage crown and LV with palatal chamfer design had the highest fracture resistance values (781.4 ± 151.4 and 618.2 ± 112.6 N, respectively). Single crown and LV with palatal chamfer had no significant difference in fracture strength (p > 05). LV with feathered-edge and butt-joint designs provided significantly (p < 05) lower fracture resistance than complete coverage crown and LV with palatal chamfer design. CONCLUSION The fracture resistance of chairside milled ZLS veneers was significantly influenced by the incisal preparation designs tested. Within the limitation of this study, when excessive occlusal forces are expected, LV with palatal chamfer display is the most conservative method of fabricating an indirect restoration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The no preparation technique which is a reversible form of treatment characterized by the absence of tooth tissue preparation and preserves the soft tissue architecture while preserving all natural tooth structures is indicated in cases where the tooth structure allows material to be added. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical performance and survival rates of indirect composite laminate veneers with no preparation after 7 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 80 indirect composite veneers were placed on maxillary anterior teeth in 35 patients (n = 80). Diastema (n = 64), wedge tooth anomalies (n = 9) and re-shaping (n = 7) were the main indications for veneer treatments. All laminate veneers were fabricated with an indirect microhybrid composite material (Gradia, GC Dental). No tooth preparation was performed. Light-cured resin cement (Choice 2, Bisco) was used to lute the veneers. Composite veneers were evaluated using Modified United States Public Health Service criteria. Survival rates of the veneers were calculated using Kaplan-Meier statistics. The data containing the results of the USPHS criteria at baseline, 2 years and 7 years was statistically analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank test at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS The overall survival rate was 91.3%. After 7 years, 7 absolute failures including 4 debonding (marginal adaptation, score 4) and 3 fractures (fracture of restoration, score 3) were noted. Color match was scored as 1 (n = 34) and 2 (n = 15). Slightly rough surfaces (41 of 73 laminates) and slight marginal discoloration (15 of 73 laminates) were noted. The overall scores after 84 months were significantly higher than the baseline scores for the marginal adaptation (p = 0.008), color match (p = 0.000), marginal discoloration (p = 0.000), surface roughness (p = 0.000), and fracture of restoration (p = 0.001) criteria. CONCLUSIONS In this study, indirect composite veneers without any preparation on maxillary anterior teeth showed acceptable performance in terms of both survival rate and quality of restorations. This procedure offers a predictable and successful treatment that ensures maximum preservation of the intact tooth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the fatigue and fracture resistance of ultra-thin laminate veneers (UTLV) with two different thicknesses and two different bonding protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 64 flat enamel surfaces were assigned to either 0.2 or 0.4 mm UTLV. The UTLV were further subdivided and assigned to one of two bonding techniques: adhesive resin cement(RC( or preheated restorative resin composite (HC) (n = 16). Eight samples were fatigued with 750,000 mechanical cycles and 8,000 thermal cycles between 5 and 55°C in a chewing simulator, and the failure mode was evaluated using a stereomicroscope and SEM. The other eight samples from each group were loaded to failure in a universal testing machine to test the fracture resistance. Fisher's exact Probability test was used to analyze the fatigue test results, and two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni's test were used to analyze the fracture resistance test results. RESULTS The difference in fatigue resistance between failure proportions in different groups was statistically different (p < 0.05). The 0.4-mm-thick UTLV had similar results regardless of the bonding technique, while 0.2-mm-thick UTLV only showed comparable results when cemented with preheated HC. No statistically significant difference was found in fracture resistance between the tested groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The Bonding technique and the thickness of the UTLV had impacted fatigue resistance but had no significant effect on the fracture resistance. bonding of UTLV with preheated composite increases their fatigue resistance. Different testing approaches delivered different results.

Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the curing modes of two adhesive resin cements (Light cure mode of the Variolink Veneer, the self-cure mode and dual cure mode of the Multilink Automix) on the marginal leakage of lithium disilicate ceramic laminate veneers. Methods: A total number of forty eight extracted natural central incisors were prepared to receive ceramic laminate veneers, constructed using E-max ceramic divided into three groups cemented using three curing modes of two adhesive resin cements {light-cure mode of Variolink Veneer, self-cure mode of Multilink Automix and dual-cure mode of Multilink Automix adhesive resin cements} . Die penetration test was done using the methylene blue stain {qualitative assessment} for testing the die penetration along the tooth/ceramic interface. Results: Descriptive statistical analysis revealed that the self-curing mode recorded the significantly least degree of leakage compared to the light and dual cure modes. The self-cure mode recorded (0.1±0.3) which was significantly lower than light cure (1.2 ±0.9) and dual cure mode (1.2 ±0.4), there was no statistical significant difference between the later two curing modes. The self-cure mode of the resin cement is considered a more effective method for having the least marginal leakage at the tooth/ceramic interface. There was no difference between the light cure mode and the dual cure mode.

Abstract
To investigate and analyze the impact of teeth preparation designs and sintering protocol on marginal fit and fracture resistance of monolithic translucent zirconia laminate veneers. A total of 40 extracted intact human maxillary central incisors were assigned into 4 groups (n=10/each group) to investigate 2 variables: (1) the design of tooth preparation (a 1.5 mm incisal reduction with or without palatal chamfer) and (2) the two different sintering programs used for translucent zirconia restoration (standard or speed sintering procedure). Marginal discrepancy was evaluated using a digital microscope. The specimens were loaded to failure in the compression mode, using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Marginal adaptation of monolithic translucent zirconia laminates are affected by both tooth preparation design and sintering protocol. However, resistance to fracture of translucent zirconia laminates has affected mainly by sintering procedure regardless the teeth preparation design used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This in vitro study aims to evaluate load-to-failure of ceramic veneers with butt joint (BJ) and feathered edge (FE) incisal preparation designs, and to correlate these results to the failure mode of the restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and forty-eight typodont teeth (customized Nissin A25A-UL19B) were divided into two different preparation configurations BJ and FE and two different loading angulations, 0° and 20°. Lithium disilicate ceramic veneers (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) were milled using computer-aided-design-and-computer-aided-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques. Veneers were bonded to typodont teeth with resin cement (IPS Variolink Esthetic, Ivoclar Vivadent). Each group was loaded at the incisal edge using an Instron Universal Testing Machine at a crosshead speed of 0.01 mm/s till failure. RESULTS Pairwise comparison showed veneers from the BJ groups had a significantly higher load-to-failure value compared to the FE groups. Veneers with a FE preparation design loaded at 20° angulation had the lowest load-to-failure value. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of the present study, both incisal preparation designs and loading angulations have significant effects on the load-to-failure values of ceramic veneers. BJ group exhibits a significantly higher load-to-failure value compared to the FE group. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE BJ incisal preparation is preferred over FE preparation design.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The authors reviewed and identified the evidence for the various incisal preparation designs for ceramic veneers. TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED The authors searched MEDLINE with PubMed and Ovid to identify any articles in the English language related to the topic up through March 2017 using a combination of key words: "porcelain veneer or ceramic veneer or dental veneer or labial veneer" AND "preparation," NOT "composite veneer," NOT "crown," NOT "implant," NOT "fixed partial denture or bridge or denture," NOT "porcelain-fused-to-metal," NOT "marginal gap or fit." RESULTS In vitro studies showed that the palatal chamfer preparation design increases the risk of developing ceramic fractures. The butt joint preparation design had the least effect on the strength of the tooth. CONCLUSIONS Surveys show the 2 most common incisal preparation designs provided are butt joint and feathered-edge. Clinical studies have identified that incisal ceramic is the most common location of ceramic fracture. In addition, there is a lack in standardization of the modeling structures and type of finite element analysis. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The evidence seems to support the use of butt joint over palatal chamfer incisal preparation design. Fracture or chipping is the most frequent complication and the risk increases with time. Incisal ceramic is the most common location of ceramic fracture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Due to their high aesthetic outcome and long-term predictability, laminate veneers have become a common restorative procedure for anterior teeth. However, because of the variety in the preparation designs and the material types, the clinician faces a dilemma of which approach to use. AIM: To compare the survival rate of dental veneers according to different preparation designs and different material types. The sub-aim is to reach a favourable preparation design and material based on scientific evidence. METHODS: Comprehensive electronic search of the dental literature via PUBMED, MEDLINE and Scopus databases was performed using the following keywords: “porcelain veneers”, “composite veneers”, “all-ceramic veneers”, “success of porcelain veneers”, “preparation design”, “preparation geometry”, “patient’s satisfaction”. Additionally, references from the selected studies and reviews were searched for more information. RESULTS: Under the limitations of the available literature, the clinician preference is the decisive factor for choosing the preparation design. Nonetheless, incisal overlap preparation seems to have the most predictable outcome from all the preparation designs. CONCLUSION: Porcelain veneers show excellent aesthetic results and predictable longevity of the treatment, while composite veneers can be considered as a good conservative option, but with less durability.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of preparation design on the marginal and internal adaptation of laminate veneers (LVs) fabricated from translucent zirconia. Thirty-three resin teeth were prepared for LVs of three designs: window preparation (WP); incisal shoulder preparation (ISP); and incisal palatal chamfer preparation (IPP). Marginal adaptation was evaluated by measuring the vertical discrepancy between the LV margin and the finish line at 60 points. The internal adaptation was assessed by measuring the internal space width as the distance between the LV and the tooth at cervical, central, and incisal sites after sectioning. At the incisal, mesial, and distal sites, mean marginal discrepancies were significantly lower in the WP group than in the other two groups; the IPP group had the highest marginal discrepancies. At incisal sites, the median internal space was significantly higher in the IPP group than in the WP and ISP groups and higher in the ISP group than in the WP group. At the incisal site, marginal and internal adaptations were better for the non-overlap translucent zirconia LV design (WP) than for the overlap designs (ISP and IPP). The characteristics of the translucent zirconia LVs used in the present study indicate acceptable clinical performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Marginal leakage is the important factor influencing the maintenance of dental esthetic. AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the preparation techniques and type of polymerization techniques on microleakage of composite laminate veneers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-one same sized, caries-free human maxillary central incisors were randomly assigned to 13 groups (n = 7) and were designed with four different preparation techniques (window type, feather type, bevel type, and incisal overlap type). One group determined as control group and any preparation was applied. Nanohybrid resin composite was used for restoration. Composite laminate veneers polymerized with three different techniques (direct light curing, indirect polymerization with a combination of pressure, light and heat using a light cup and heat cup, direct polymerization, and additionally heat cured in an oven). The specimens were thermocycled, and then immersed in 5% basic fuchsine solution. Following 24 h, all specimens were immersed in 65% nitric acid solutions for volumetric dye extraction test. Samples diluted with distilled water and centrifuged and microleakage determined by a spectrophotometer. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey honest significant difference post hoc multiple comparisons test (P < 0.05). RESULTS For comparing the microleakage value of preparation and polymerization techniques, Window type preparation showed a significant difference in direct polymerization + additional cured group (P < 0.05). Control group was statistically different from the other groups (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Window type laminate preparation can be preferred in indirect polymerization technique because it caused less leakage in this present study.

Abstract
PURPOSE Dental fluorosis is an enamel dysplasia that can cause serious aesthetic and psychological problems. An examination of the literature shows that the microabrasion method is the most effective way to treat fluorosis. This study aimed to produce a prototype microabrasion paste for the treatment of fluorosis stains and to examine the effects of the paste on tooth structure and color in vitro. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty extracted upper incisor teeth were used in this study. The teeth were divided into four treatment groups: a prototype microabrasion paste group (N = 10), an Opalustre paste group (N = 10), a 37% phosphoric acid gel group (N = 10), and a distilled water (control) group (N = 10). Following treatment, all specimens in each of the four groups were examined by scanning electron microscopy for changes in their surface enamel. Changes in tooth color changes of the 1st and 2nd groups were measured before and after treatment by a VITA Easyshade Advance spectrophotometer. RESULTS In scanning electron microscopy evaluations, significant differences were not observed between the 1st and 2nd groups. Differences in three color-measuring coordinates between the 1st and 2nd were also not statistically significant (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The study demonstrated that the prototype paste is a viable treatment option for dental fluorosis. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The findings in this study demonstrated that the tested prototype microabrasion paste is extremely harmless, minimally invasive agent, and able to improve the color, shine and chrome values of the teeth.

Abstract
Re-establishing a patient’s lost dental esthetic appearance is one of the most important topics for contemporary dentistry. New treatment materials and methods have been coming on the scene, day by day, in order to achieve such an aim. Most dentists prefer more conservative and aesthetic approaches, such as direct and indirect laminate veneer restorations, instead of full-ceramic crowns for anteriors where aesthetics is really important.
Laminate veneers are restorations which are envisioned to correct existing abnormalities, esthetic deficiencies and discolo-rations. Laminate veneer restorations may be processed in two different ways: direct or indirect. Direct laminate veneers have no need to be prepared in the laboratory and are based on the principle of application of a composite material directly to the prepared tooth surface in the dental clinic. Indirect laminate veneers may be produced from composite materials or ceramics, which are cemented to the tooth with an adhesive resin. In this case report, direct composite laminate veneer technique used for three patients with esthetic problems related to fractures, discolorations and an old prolapsed restoration, is described and six-month follow-ups are discussed. As a conclusion, direct laminate veneer restorations may be a treatment option for patients with the esthetic problems of anterior teeth in cases similar to those reported here.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dentinogenesis imperfecta is one of the most common hereditary disorders of dentine formation. Opalescent teeth composed of irregularly formed and undemineralised dentine that obliterates pulp chambers and root canals characterize it. Complete-coverage crowns are usually the preferred restoration for patients with this condition. CASE REPORT A 9 year-old girl presented with dentinogenesis imperfecta, congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors and maxillary right permanent second molar retention. TREATMENT The treatment comprised an initial approach to allow the correct eruption of the retained second molar. The use of low-fusion metal ceramic restorations comprised a second stage to improve the aesthetic appearance and decrease the risk of overload on teeth with limited value. FOLLOW-UP The patient has been recalled regularly and at the last visit, 10 years after initial prosthetic treatment, no problems or signs of complications have occurred. The patient is now aged 25 years and is still satisfied with the prosthetic rehabilitation. CONCLUSION This case illustrates the need for appropriate and timely restorative treatment to prevent deterioration of the dentition. This case will also demonstrate that low-fusion metal ceramic restoration is a viable esthetic treatment option for today's patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of thickness of porcelain veneers constructed from CAD-CAM on their final color when two resin cements were used. METHODS Buccal surfaces of extracted sound human molars with shade 3M2 [verified using digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade-Vident)] were reduced to expose flat enamel surfaces. CAD-CAM blocks (Vitablokcs Mark II) of the same shade were sectioned into three groups of 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7mm thickness. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups; one subgroup was cemented to enamel using an etch-and-rinse resin cement (Calibra/Prime and bond-NT, Dentsply) and the other was cemented to enamel using a self-etching resin cement (Panavia-F, Kuraray). The shade of the two resin cements was "light". Change in color (ΔE) between the selected shade (3M2) and the resulted shade was measured for each specimen using a digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade-Vident). Means and SDs were calculated and data was statistically analyzed using ANOVA and post hoc tukey's. RESULTS Change in color (ΔE) between the selected and the produced shade for the Calibra subgroups was 2.8 (0.3) for the 0.3mm, 1.67 (0.2) for the 0.5mm thick specimens and 1.26 (0.3) for the 0.7mm. Panavia F subgroups showed ΔE of 2 (0.4) for the 0.3mm, 1.13 (0.23) for the 0.5mm thick specimens and 1.21 (0.31) for the 0.7mm. The 0.7mm subgroups showed no significant difference in color change among the two cements (P>.05), however, Calibra resulted in significantly higher change in color values for the 0.5mm thick specimens (P<.05). In spite of the presence of significant difference for the Calibra 0.5mm thick subgroup, the color change was considered to be within the clinically acceptable range. The 0.3mm showed high significant difference for the two tested cements with the Panavia showing less change in color and Calibra showing clinically detectable change in color. CONCLUSION Increasing porcelain veneer thickness from 0.5 to 0.7mm did not significantly affect the final color of cemented veneers. Whilst the color was significantly affected at the thickness of 0.3mm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Effect of different adhesive luting systems on the shear bond strength of IPS Empress 2 ceramic restorations to fluorosed enamel surface was investigated. METHODS Forty-eight ceramic discs (2 mm x 3 mm; IPS Empress 2) were fabricated. Twenty-four non-carious extracted human molar teeth with fluorosis and 24 without fluorosis were cleaned with pumice using a plastic brush and then they were divided into two main groups. The IPS Empress 2 ceramic discs were luted to the teeth of four subgroups with two different adhesive luting systems, Variolink 2/Excite DSC (etch-and-rinse) and Clearfil Esthetic Cement/ED Primer II (self-etch), thermocycling was performed 5000 times. Shear bond strengths were tested using Shimadzu Universal Testing Machine until failure. An optical microscope and image analyzer were used at 10x and 1000x magnification to analyze the surfaces for adhesive, cohesive and mixed failure percentages. Data was analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey test at a significance level of p<0.05. RESULTS Mean shear bond strength data of the groups in MPa were; Variolink 2/Excite DSC on fluorosed enamel: 18.3+/-3.08, Variolink 2/Excite DSC on non-fluorosed enamel: 18.79+/-2.65, Clearfil Esthetic Cement/ED Primer II on fluorosed enamel: 8.43+/-2.45, Clearfil Esthetic Cement/ED Primer II on non-fluorosed enamel: 13.53+/-1.68. Mixed failure was the most prevalent type of failure in moderate fluorosed and non-fluorosed teeth with etch-and-rinse dentin bonding system, and in fluorosed teeth with self-etch dentin bonding system. CONCLUSIONS The use of an etch-and-rinse adhesive luting procedure produced higher bond strengths of glass-ceramics bonded to fluorosed and non-fluorosed enamel surfaces than the self-etch bonding system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the most efficacious method of treating stained teeth: bleaching alone, veneering alone or a combination of bleaching and veneering and whether the choice alters depending on the degree of staining. METHODS Extracted teeth were sectioned to give 117 samples. These samples were split into unstained, lightly and darkly stained groups based on CIE-Lab value L*. The lightly and darkly stained groups were stained using tea. Teeth from each group were then assigned to one of four subgroups (control (C), bleaching alone (B), veneering alone (V), or a combination of bleaching and veneering (BV), each containing 13 samples. Veneering was performed using 0.8-mm thick ceramic veneer of shade B1. CIE-Lab values were recorded using a spectrophotometer and the colour difference (Delta E) was calculated for each intervention. The final colour was compared to the value for obtained from a B1 (Vita) Shade tab. Statistical significance was assessed using analysis of variance. RESULTS In all three test groups, intervention resulted in a statistically significant colour change compared to the C group (p<or=0.001). In the unstained group, the only intervention that reached statistically significant parity to B1 was BV (p=0.015). In the lightly stained group, BV produced the most colour change and the value closest to B1 (p<or=0.003). In dark group, BV produced the greatest colour change and the value closest to B1 however; this was not statistically significantly better than V (p=0.146). CONCLUSIONS All the interventions produced a statistically significant and clinically visible colour change compared to the control. External light-activated bleaching produced a clinically visible colour change. In all groups the combination of bleaching and veneering gave the closest value to B1.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Laminate veneers are widely used in the management of unesthetic anterior teeth. However, limited information is available regarding the influence of preparation design on longevity of ceramic veneers. PURPOSE This study evaluated the influence of preparation design on longevity and failure load of ceramic veneers bonded to human maxillary central incisors after cyclic loading and thermal cycling in a dual-axis masticatory simulator. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-four caries-free maxillary central incisors were divided into 4 groups (n = 16). The control group remained unprepared (NP). For Group WP, a window preparation was made. Specimens in Group IOP were prepared with an incisal overlap of 2 mm without palatal chamfer. For Group CVP, specimens were prepared with a complete-veneer design of 3-mm incisal reduction and 2-mm palatal extension. Forty-eight IPS Empress 1 ceramic veneers were bonded adhesively with dual-polymerizing composite (Variolink II). All specimens were subjected to cyclic mechanical loading (1.2 million cycles, cycle frequency 1.3 Hz, invariable palatal load 49 N) and thermal cycling (5 degrees C-55 degrees C, dwell time 60 seconds, 5500 cycles) in a masticatory simulator. Failure was defined by bulk fracture of a specimen. Subcritical crack patterns were observed. Surviving specimens were loaded in a universal testing machine until fracture. The failure-load values (N) (1.5 mm/min crosshead speed) were automatically recorded by controlling software. Statistical analysis of data was performed by Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance (alpha = .05) and pairwise Wilcoxon rank sum tests (alpha = .05). RESULTS Three specimens from group NP, 1 specimen each from the WP and CVP groups, and 2 specimens from group IOP fractured during fatigue. After 1.2 million cycles, the highest crack rates were observed for complete veneers and originated in the palatal concavity extending to the facial surface. The median (interquartile range = x .25 - x .75 ) failure loads (N) were as follows: NP 713.3 (404.4-777.1), WP 549.5 (477.5-597.7), IOP 695.3 (400.0-804.6), and CVP 519.2 (406.1-732.9). No significant differences in longevity and failure load were demonstrated between natural teeth and teeth restored with ceramic veneers ( P = .555). CONCLUSION Maxillary teeth restored with the 3 types of IPS Empress 1 veneers showed fracture resistance similar to that of unprepared incisors ( P = .555).

Abstract
There is an ever-growing demand for esthetic dental treatment. Treatment modalities include crowns, bleaching, and ceramic or composite veneers. A more conservative treatment option, enamel microabrasion, may be indicated in certain clinical scenarios. The purpose of this clinical report is to describe the use of enamel microabrasion for a patient with discolored anterior teeth.
