Abstract
The present study sought to retrospectively investigate the dietary habits of two adolescent, European populations from the cross-sectional Greek TEENAGE Study and French STANISLAS Family Study. We aimed to explore the relation between the populations' dietary patterns and blood pressure, glycemic and lipidemic profile. Dietary patterns were extracted via Principal Component Analysis (PCA), based on data collected from two 24 h dietary recalls for the TEENAGE study and a 3-day food consumption diary for the STANISLAS study. Multiple linear regressions and mixed models analyses, adjusting for confounding factors, were employed to investigate potential associations. A total of 766 Greek teenagers and 287 French teenagers, were included in analyses. Five dietary patterns were extracted for each population accounting for 49.35% and 46.69% of their respective total variance, with similarities regarding the consumption of specific food groups (i.e., western-type foods). In the TEENAGE Study, the "chicken and sugars" pattern was associated with lower CRP levels, after adjusting for confounding factors (p-value < 0.01). The "high protein and animal fat" dietary pattern of the STANISLAS Family Study was related to higher BMI (p-value < 0.01) and higher triglycerides levels (p-value < 0.01). Our findings summarize the dietary habits of two teenage, European populations and their associations with cardiometabolic risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parent-child diet quality resemblance is unknown in families of youth with type 1 diabetes, for whom nutrition is central to disease management. OBJECTIVE Examine diet quality resemblance in families of youth with type 1 diabetes participating in a behavioral nutrition intervention trial and investigate whether treatment assignment or family meal frequency modifies resemblance. DESIGN This is a secondary data analysis from an 18-month randomized controlled trial conducted August 2010 to May 2013. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING Parent-youth dyads (N=136, child age=12.3±2.5 years) were recruited from a northeast US diabetes center. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Parent and child Healthy Eating Index-2005 (HEI-2005, reflecting adherence to 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans) and whole plant food density (WPFD, reflecting intervention target foods) were calculated from 3-day food records collected every 6 months. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Linear random effects models adjusting for demographics and disease characteristics investigated parent-child diet quality resemblance. Separate models examined whether treatment assignment or family meal frequency modified resemblance. Three-way interaction terms examined whether resemblance changed over time by treatment assignment. RESULTS Time-varying parent and child HEI-2005 and WPFD were positively associated (P<0.001), and there were no interactions with family meals. Parent-child HEI-2005 resemblance was similar across treatment groups; however, parent-child WPFD resemblance was stronger in the intervention (β±standard error [SE]=.30±.06) vs control families (β±SE=.12±.05). Parent-child HEI-2005 resemblance was similar over time by treatment assignment, whereas parent-child WPFD resemblance increased over time for families in the intervention group (three-way interaction term β±SE=.03±.01). CONCLUSIONS Parent and youth diet quality were positively correlated in families of youth with type 1 diabetes. Resemblance was stronger in the intervention group for target foods, but not for a general measure of diet quality. The lack of effect modification by family meal frequency suggests that family diet quality resemblance is not contingent on shared meals.

Abstract
Telomere length (TL) is associated with numerous disease states and is affected by genetic and environmental factors. However, TL has been mostly studied in adult populations of European or Asian ancestry. These studies have identified 34 TL-associated genetic variants recently used as genetic proxies for TL. The generalizability of these associations to pediatric populations and racially diverse populations, specifically of African ancestry, remains unclear. Furthermore, six novel variants associated with TL in a population of European children have been identified but not validated. We measured TL from whole blood samples of 492 healthy African American youth (children and adolescents between 8 and 20 years old) and performed the first genome-wide association study of TL in this population. We were unable to replicate neither the 34 reported genetic associations found in adults nor the six genetic associations found in European children. However, we discovered a novel genome-wide significant association between TL and rs1483898 on chromosome 14. Our results underscore the importance of examining genetic associations with TL in diverse pediatric populations such as African Americans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present study aimed to analyse the nutritional quality of childrens' breakfasts using data collected during a cross-sectional observational study on the prevalence of urinary osmolality in 529 French children aged 9-11 years. METHODS Total nutrient intake, mean adequacy ratio (MAR), energy density and solid energy density were calculated from breakfast food and fluid nutritional composition. To identify the main qualitative breakfast patterns, each breakfast item was categorised into 15 solid and liquid food categories and a principal component analysis followed by a cluster analysis was performed. RESULTS Only 9.8% included skipped breakfast. Breakfast provided, on average, 22.9% of the recommended daily energy intake and 24.7% of the mean adequacy ratio of 23 key nutrients. Four breakfast patterns were identified: 'Sweets breakfast' (40.0% of children), 'Traditional French breakfast' (27.2%), 'Ready-to-eat cereal (RTEC) + milk' (18.1%) and 'Dairy and juice breakfast' (9.5%). Nutritionally, the 'RTEC + milk' pattern was the most advantageous. Flavoured milk was the most frequently consumed food (50.5%) and the major component of the 'Traditional French breakfast'. CONCLUSIONS Although breakfast provided a substantial contribution to a range of nutrients, opportunity for improvement, particularly to less nutrient breakfast patterns, should not be overlooked.

Abstract
It is the position of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics that children ages 2 to 11 years should achieve optimal physical and cognitive development, maintain healthy weights, enjoy food, and reduce the risk of chronic disease through appropriate eating habits and participation in regular physical activity. Rapid increases in the prevalence of childhood obesity during the 1980s and 1990s focused attention on young children's overconsumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods and beverages and lack of physical activity. While recent data suggest a stabilization of obesity rates, several public health concerns remain. These include the most effective ways to promote healthy weights, the number of children living in food insecurity, the under-consumption of key nutrients, and the early development of diet-related risks for chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, obesity, and osteoporosis. This Position Paper reviews what children 2 to 11 years old in the United States are reportedly eating, explores trends in food and nutrient intakes, and examines the impact of federal nutrition programs on child nutrition. Current dietary recommendations and guidelines for physical activity are also discussed. The roles of parents and caregivers in influencing the development of life-long healthy eating behaviors are highlighted. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics works with other allied health and food industry professionals to translate dietary recommendations and guidelines into positive, practical health messages. Specific recommendations and sources of science-based nutrition messages to improve the nutritional well-being of children are provided for food and nutrition practitioners.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to investigate the effect of breakfast consumption on cognitive performance and mood in adolescents, and any interaction that breakfast consumption might have with cognitive load. The rationale for this approach was that the beneficial effects of any intervention with regard to cognitive function may be more readily apparent when more demands are placed on the system. Furthermore, as skipping breakfast is particularly prevalent within this age group, thus, we focused on adolescents who habitually skip breakfast. Cognitive load was modulated by varying the level of difficulty of a series of cognitive tasks tapping memory, attention, and executive functions. Mood measured with Bond–Lader scales (1974) as well as measures of thirst, hunger, and satiety were recorded at each test session both at baseline and after the completion of each test battery. Forty adolescents (mean age = 14:2) participated in this within-subjects design study. According to treatment, all participants were tested before and after the intake of a low Glycaemic index breakfast (i.e., a 35 g portion of AllBran and 125 ml semi-skimmed milk) and before and after no breakfast consumption. Assessment time had two levels: 8.00 am (baseline) and 10.45 am. The orders of cognitive load tasks were counterbalanced. Overall it appeared that following breakfast participants felt more alert, satiated, and content. Following breakfast consumption, there was evidence for improved cognitive performance across the school morning compared to breakfast omission in some tasks (e.g., Hard Word Recall, Serial 3's and Serial 7's). However, whilst participants performance on the hard version of each cognitive task was significantly poorer compared to the corresponding easy version, there was limited evidence to support the hypothesis that the effect of breakfast was greater in the more demanding versions of the tasks.

Abstract
Global shifts toward an increasingly Western diet and rises in nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases necessitate systematic examination of dietary change in adults and children. This study longitudinally examined mother and child dietary intakes and their relationship with socioeconomic factors across 4 mutually exclusive cohorts followed over 6- to 7-y time periods (cohort A: 1991-1997, cohort B: 1993-2000, cohort C: 1997-2004, cohort D: 2000-2006). The cohorts included 966 mother-child pairs (children 3-5 y at baseline) from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Dietary intake was assessed using 24-h recall and household food consumption data; dietary variables were the percentage of total energy from animal-source foods (ASF), fats/oils, and grains. Mother-child comparison of dietary variables used average annual change measures, Spearman partial correlations, random effects models, and seemingly unrelated regression models and estimation. Whereas children were earlier adopters and maintainers of a less traditional Chinese diet, mothers experienced greater shifts away from the traditional Chinese diet with increasing child age. Mother-child correlations for the dietary variables ranged from 0.46 to 0.89 (P < 0.001). Similar increased intake of ASF and decreased intake of grains were reported for mothers and children of urban (vs. rural) residence and with higher levels of maternal education (P < 0.001). A comparable cohort effect was shown, with mothers and children consuming a less traditional Chinese diet in the later (C and D) compared to earlier (A and B) cohorts (P < 0.05). Our findings provide insight into dietary changes in mothers and children within the context of a rapidly changing nutrition and socioeconomic environment.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study sought to determine the association between mother-daughter resemblance in body mass index (BMI) and obesity-related behaviors and whether connectedness moderated those associations. METHOD Seventy-six girl scouts (ages 9 to 13 years) were objectively assessed for BMI and surveyed via questionnaire. Sixty-eight parents also completed questionnaires assessing height, weight, and obesity-related behaviors. RESULTS Significant relationships were found for television viewing (beta = .351, p = .002), eating while watching television (beta = .468, p < .001), fruit consumption (beta = .374, p = .005) and vegetable consumption (beta = .243, p = .050). Connectedness moderated the maternal BMI and daughter BMI Z-score relationship (beta = .307, p = .026), and mother-daughter TV viewing (beta = .258, p = .043). CONCLUSION Connectedness may influence girls' BMI and behavioral resemblance to mothers. Specific pathways leading to greater similarity between parent and child relative weight need further study.

Abstract
AIM To assess the relationship between number of meals eaten and weight status, and to assess potential confounders of this relationship. METHODS A total of 2870 (participation rate: 85%) 9th and 10th graders (mean age: 15.5 years) at 33 schools completed questionnaires in May 2005. Number of meals was measured with questions asking whether they ate breakfast, lunch, dinner, and supper the day before, giving a scale ranging from zero to four meals/day. Data on gender, height, weight, education plans, intake of fruits and vegetables, consumption of unhealthy snacks, TV/computer time, physical activity level, and dieting were also collected. RESULTS The proportions of overweight adolescents related to the number of meals eaten were: 10% (0-1 meals, n = 107), 18% (2 meals, n = 399), 14% (3 meals, n = 925), and 10% (4 meals, n = 1402), p ≤ 0.001. Low education plans, high TV/computer time, low physical activity level, and dieting were all positively associated with both being overweight and not having four meals. Being a boy was positively associated with being overweight but negatively associated with not having four meals. High intake of unhealthy snacks was negatively associated with being overweight, but positively associated with not having four meals. In a logistic regression analysis, adjusting for all variables mentioned, odds ratio for being overweight were 0.8 (95% CI 0.3-1.9), 1.8 (95% CI 1.2-2.7) and 1.6 (95% CI 1.2-2.3), respectively, for eating one or zero, two, and three meals compared to four meals. CONCLUSIONS Eating four meals/day was significantly negatively related to being overweight, also when controlling for potential confounding factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Parents are believed to have a strong influence on children's eating behaviours. However, previous findings on child-parent resemblance in dietary intakes are mixed. We systematically reviewed and meta-analysed the association (correlations) based on published studies. METHODS We searched related studies published since 1980 and found 24 studies meeting inclusion criteria for review and 15 for meta-regression analysis. We compared the associations between parent-child pairs, nutrients, over time and by dietary assessment method. RESULTS Most studies were based on small samples. Overall, they suggest a moderate or weak association, but findings varied remarkably. Our meta-analysis showed that average Fisher's transformed correlations were 0.20 (95% CI 0.13 to 0.28) for fat (% energy); for energy, 0.21 (0.18 to 0.24). The correlations varied by parent-child pairs, dietary assessment and countries. Food frequency questionnaires or mixed approaches yielded lower correlation than 24-h recalls or food records. Child self-reported intakes showed weaker correlation and better methodology quality showed stronger correlation in fat intake (% energy), which also became weaker over time. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the resemblance is weak, and it varied considerably across studies, nutrients, foods and parent-child pairs.

Abstract
Family history is a risk factor for many chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Professional guidelines usually include family history to assess health risk, initiate interventions, and motivate behavioral changes. The advantages of family history over other genomic tools include a lower cost, greater acceptability, and a reflection of shared genetic and environmental factors. However, the utility of family history in public health has been poorly explored. To establish family history as a public health tool, it needs to be evaluated within the ACCE framework (analytical validity; clinical validity; clinical utility; and ethical, legal, and social issues). Currently, private and public organizations are developing tools to collect standardized family histories of many diseases. Their goal is to create family history tools that have decision support capabilities and are compatible with electronic health records. These advances will help realize the potential of family history as a public health tool.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine, in a general population, the resemblance in eating behaviour between adolescents and their parents. This study was based on the first examination of a community-based epidemiological study in Northern France. Subjects were offspring aged 14-22 years (135 boys and 125 girls) and their parents (174 fathers and 205 mothers). The Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire Revised 18-item version (TFEQ-R18) identified three aspects of eating behaviour: cognitive restraint of eating, uncontrolled eating and emotional eating. Familial resemblance in eating behaviour was measured by partial Spearman's correlations, adjusted for age and body mass index. Sons' uncontrolled eating was positively related to fathers' cognitive restraint of eating (r = 0.36), but not to fathers' uncontrolled eating (r = 0.07), nor to mothers' eating behaviour. Sons' cognitive restraint of eating was related to no parental eating behaviour scores. In daughters, cognitive restraint of eating was positively related to mothers' uncontrolled eating (r = 0.26), but not to mothers' cognitive restraint of eating (r = 0.13). Daughters' uncontrolled eating and emotional eating were positively associated with the same scores in mothers. Finally, daughters' eating behaviour was not related to fathers' eating behaviour. In conclusion, correlations in eating behaviour were higher with the parent of the same gender, and eating behaviours in adolescents seem to reflect opposition to parents' behaviour more than familial resemblance.

Abstract
The description of this familial longitudinal cohort was published in this journal 10 years ago, in 1998. To date, 117 publications on the STANISLAS Cohort (SC) have appeared, corresponding to five main categories of results: familial resemblance and heritability; genetics and gene-environment interactions; mRNA and proteins as gene products; reference values and biological variations of proteins; and finally preventive medicine and prepathological epidemiological data. More than 600 data values on demographic and laboratory data have been collected on each individual taking part out of the 1006 families at the beginning and for all three recruitments. Serum and plasma are stored in liquid nitrogen for all participants for all three recruitments. DNA has been extracted from all participants and mRNA from 357 families. They are stored at -80 degrees C. Owing to the SC study, heritability and many gene-environment interactions have been described. The expression of 166 genes related to cardiovascular diseases was measured in peripheral blood mononuclear cells RNA. Reference values for proteins and vitamins have been established in addition to reference values for the carotid and femoral intima media thickness in adults and children. The data obtained contribute to a better understanding of the relation between the studied polymorphisms (161 polymorphic sites) and health, and predisposition to obesity, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, the SC study is internationally the only longitudinal family cohort of subjects who are presumed to be healthy, which enables the study of the chain DNA-RNA-proteins.

Abstract
Recent concerns about adolescent nutrition and unhealthy weights have prompted an examination of the myriad influences on dietary intake during adolescence. Included here are a summary of the literature on family influence on dietary intake, specifically during adolescence and within the family context, a summary of family meal patterns, and a systematic review of the known influences of family meals on dietary intake. Because of the complexity of families in today’s society, models were developed to depict the broad context of familial influences on adolescent nutritional behaviours and attitudes and to describe what is known and not known about family meal influences on adolescent dietary intake and quality. A systematic review of the literature revealed seven articles specifically related to adolescents, family meals, and dietary intake, which were analyzed for strength of evidence and plausibility. In spite of data collection methods relying on self-report, results suggested that family meals were associated with improved dietary intakes. Families in today’s societies are complex. Nevertheless, parents have the potential to influence positively, through family meals, what food is provided, where it is provided (e.g., home, restaurant), and within what type of atmosphere it is provided.

Abstract
This review summarizes the research advances of the past decade regarding the role of human genetic differences in energy and nutrient intake as well as in eating behavior phenotypes and selected eating disorders. The evidence for familial aggregation and heritability based on twin and nuclear family study designs is summarized. Genome-wide linkage scans and quantitative trait loci identified to date are discussed. DNA sequence variants in candidate genes are reviewed. Single genes associated with classical eating disorders are also incorporated. Epigenetic events will need to be incorporated in future studies designed to investigate the effects of DNA variants on dietary phenotypes. Understanding the relative contribution of global genetic variation and of DNA sequence variants in specific genes is important in the effort to influence dietary habits in a healthier direction.

Abstract
There is growing agreement among experts that an obesogenic environment, which encourage excess food intake and idealizes thinness, plays a crucial role in the epidemic of childhood obesity and eating disorders. Because parents provide a child's contextual environment, they should be considered key players in interventions aimed at preventing or treating weight-related problems. Parenting style and feeding style are crucial factors in fostering healthy lifestyle and awareness of internal hunger and satiety cues and de-emphasizing thinness. Effective interventions for prevention and treatment of weight-related problems should be approached from a health-centered rather than a weight-centered perspective, with the parents as central agents of change. This paper reviews the environmental risk factors and parents' role in the prevention and treatment of children's weight-related problems.
