Abstract
Chromosomal evolution is widely considered an important driver of speciation because it can promote the establishment of reproductive barriers. Karyotypic reorganization is also expected to affect the mean phenotype, as well as its development and patterns of phenotypic integration, through processes such as variation in genetic linkage between quantitative trait loci or between regulatory regions and their targets. Here we explore the relationship between chromosomal evolution and phenotypic integration by analyzing a well-known house mouse parapatric contact zone between a highly derived Robertsonian (Rb) race (2n = 22) and populations with standard karyotype (2n = 40). Populations with hybrid karyotypes are scattered throughout the hybrid zone connecting the two parental races. Using mandible shape data and geometric morphometrics, we test the hypothesis that patterns of integration progressively diverge from the “normal” integration pattern observed in the standard race as they accumulate Rb fusions. We find that the main pattern of integration observed between the posterior and anterior part of the mandible can be largely attributed to allometry. We find no support for a gradual increase in divergence from normal patterns of integration as fusions accumulate. Surprisingly, however, we find that the derived Rb race (2n = 22) has a distinct allometric trajectory compared with the standard race. Our results suggest that either individual fusions disproportionately affect patterns of integration or that there are mechanisms which “purge” extreme variants in hybrids (e.g. reduced fitness of hybrid shape).

Abstract
Analysis of contact zones between parapatric chromosomal races can help our understanding of chromosomal divergence and its influence on the speciation process. Monitoring the position and any movement of contact zones can allow particular insights. This study investigates the present (2012-2014) and past (1998-2002) distribution of two parapatric house mouse chromosomal races-PEDC (Estreito da Calheta) and PADC (Achadas da Cruz)-on Madeira Island, aiming to identify changes in the location and width of their contact. We also extended the 1998-2002 sampling area into the range of another chromosomal race-PLDB (Lugar de Baixo). Clinal analysis indicates no major geographic alterations in the distribution and chromosomal characteristics of the PEDC and PADC races but exhibited a significant shift in position of the Rb (7.15) fusion, resulting in the narrowing of the contact zone over a 10+ year period. We discuss how this long-lasting contact zone highlights the role of landscape on mouse movements, in turn influencing the chromosomal characteristics of populations. The expansion of the sampling area revealed new chromosomal features in the north and a new contact zone in the southern range involving the PEDC and PLDB races. We discuss how different interacting mechanisms (landscape resistance, behaviour, chromosomal incompatibilities, meiotic drive) may help to explain the pattern of chromosomal variation at these contacts between chromosomal races.

Abstract
During the period between 1999 and 2006, wood-feeding cockroaches in the Cryptocercus punctulatus Scudder species complex were collected throughout Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA. The chromosome numbers of insects from 59 sites were determined, and phylogenetic analyses were performed based on mitochondrial COII and nuclear ITS2 DNA. The distribution of the three male karyotypes found in the park (2n = 37, 39, and 45) is mapped and discussed in relation to recent disturbances and glacial history. Clades of the three karyotype groups meet near the ridgeline separating North Carolina from Tennessee in the center of the park, suggesting that these may have originated from separate lower elevation refugia after the last glacial maximum. The timing of divergence and a significant correlation between elevation difference and genetic distance in two of the clades supports this hypothesis. The ecological role of the cockroaches in the park is discussed.

Abstract
Although chromosome rearrangements (CRs) are central to studies of genome evolution, our understanding of the evolutionary consequences of the early stages of karyotypic differentiation (i.e. polymorphism), especially the non-meiotic impacts, is surprisingly limited. We review the available data on chromosomal polymorphisms in mammals so as to identify taxa that hold promise for developing a more comprehensive understanding of chromosomal change. In doing so, we address several key questions: (i) to what extent are mammalian karyotypes polymorphic, and what types of rearrangements are principally involved? (ii) Are some mammalian lineages more prone to chromosomal polymorphism than others? More specifically, do (karyotypically) polymorphic mammalian species belong to lineages that are also characterized by past, extensive karyotype repatterning? (iii) How long can chromosomal polymorphisms persist in mammals? We discuss the evolutionary implications of these questions and propose several research avenues that may shed light on the role of chromosome change in the diversification of mammalian populations and species.

Abstract
Several long-term temporal analyses of the structure of Robertsonian (Rb) hybrid zones in the western house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus, have been performed. Nevertheless, the detection of gradual or very rapid variations in a zone may be overlooked when the time elapsed between periods of study is too long. The Barcelona chromosomal polymorphism zone of the house mouse covers about 5000, km(2) around the city of Barcelona and is surrounded by 40 chromosome telocentric populations. Seven different metacentrics and mice with diploid numbers between 27 and 40 chromosomes and several fusions in heterozygous state (from one to seven) have been reported. We compare the present (period 2008-2010) and past (period 1996-2000) structure of this zone before examining its dynamics in more detail. Results indicate that there is not a Rb race in this area, which is consistent with the proposal that this zone was probably originated in situ, under a primary intergradation scenario. The lack of individuals with more than five metacentrics in heterozygous state in the current period suggests that selection acted against such mice. By contrast, this situation did not occur for mice with fewer than five fusions in heterozygous condition. Changes in human activity may affect the dynamics of gene flow between subpopulations, thus altering the chromosomal composition of certain sites. Although these local variations may have modified the clinal trend for certain metacentrics, the general staggered structure of the zone has not varied significantly in a decade.

Abstract
The West European house mouse, Mus musculus domesticus, is a particularly suitable model to investigate the role of chromosomal rearrangements in reproductive isolation. In fact, it exhibits a broad range of chromosomal polymorphism due to Robertsonian (Rb) fusions leading to various types of contact zones between different chromosomal races. In the present study, we analyzed a parapatric contact in central Italy between the Cittaducale chromosomal race (CD: 2n= 22) and the surrounding populations with standard karyotype (2n= 40) to understand if Rb fusions play a causative role in speciation. One hundred forty-seven mice from 17 localities were genotyped by means of 12 microsatellite loci. A telomeric and a pericentromeric locus situated on six chromosome arms (four Rbs and one telocentric) were selected to detect differences in the amount of gene flow for each locus in different chromosomal positions. The analyses performed on the two subsets of loci show differences in the level of gene flow, which is more restricted near the centromeres of Rb chromosomes. This effect is less pronounced in the homozygotes populations settled at the border of the hybrid zone. We discuss the possible cause of the differential porosity of gene flow in Rbs considering "hybrid dysfunctions" and "suppressed recombination" models.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies describe moving hybrid zones. This raises the issue of their actual frequency and emphasizes the need for methods that enable the detection of zone movements without historical records. Asymmetric introgression, usually considered as a signature of geographical shift, might be misleading when applied to mitochondrial or potentially non-neutral markers. We investigated mitochondrial and genomic introgression, using 30 AFLP derived markers, in a well-documented moving avian contact zone between two warblers. We found no instances of cross-species transmission of mitochondrial DNA but we detected nuclear introgression. Introgression levels were higher in the expanding species. Highest introgression was observed in populations that recently became allopatric than in current sympatric populations, which suggests that alien genetic material mainly spread at the time just before the receding species became extinct. We propose that either local recruitment or positive selection on some loci contribute to this pattern. Furthermore, we propose that, when the rarefaction of sexual partners drive the hybridization process, movement could be revealed by introgression peaking on the rear edge of the moving zone, or in its close vicinity.

Abstract
Previous studies suggest that the hybrid zone between two taxa in the Piriqueta caroliniana complex in central Florida (south-eastern North America) has recently expanded with hybrids replacing parental genotypes across a broad region of the Florida peninsula. Here I use patterns of genetic disequilibria and levels of differentiation among populations to infer historical patterns of introgression across this broad hybrid zone. There were strong positive associations among taxon-specific alleles at the southern extent of hybridization, but disequilibria values were close to zero across the central and northern portions of the hybrid zone. Levels of among-population differentiation in the central portion of the hybrid zone were relatively low, and increased towards the northern extent of hybridization. The high levels of disequilibria are coincident with the sharp clines at the southern end of the hybrid zone, suggesting that there is a tension zone in this region that is maintained by selection against hybrids and dispersal from parental regions. The levels of disequilibria within populations and patterns of differentiation among populations are consistent with historical introgression and northward expansion of this hybrid zone, which may have slowed or ceased in recent generations.

Abstract
Dual-colour FISH painting with alternative fluorescent chromosome-specific probes allowed us to distinguish chromosomes 1, 4, 6 and 14. The purpose was to check whether nondisjunction rates of specific chromosomes involved in heterozygous Robertsonian fusions are independent of the number of trivalents, or an epistatic effect among Rb chromosomes takes place affecting nondisjunction rates. Probes were used on DAPI-stained metaphases of spermatocytes II of laboratory strains of mice with reconstructed karyotypes heterozygous for one, two, three or four Robertsonian metacentrics in an all-acrocentric background. The existence of such epistatic interactions was not verified.

Abstract
The contact zone between the Ancarano (ACR; 2n = 24) and Cittaducale (CD; 2n = 22) races of Mus musculus domesticus was studied. We used chromosomes and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences of the control region as genetic markers to detect introgression between races. In total, 76 mice were trapped at 17 localities. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on 73 mice. A segment of the control region (468 bp) was sequenced in 41 specimens. The two races are distributed parapatrically and the contact zone was identified inside a village (Pizzoli). No mixed population was found in the study area. The contact zone does not correspond to any geographical or ecological barrier but is located in a zone of potentially high density of mice. The sequence analysis clearly demonstrates genetic differentiation between races (1.4% of sequence divergence). Hybridization is rare. Evidence of introgression was found in two individuals in the contact zone: one individual of the ACR race carries a metacentric belonging to the CD race, while another ACR individual carries a CD-like haplotype. In these ecological conditions, the observed distribution pattern and the very low level of hybridization suggest the presence of a premating mechanism of reproductive isolation.
