Abstract
We report passively Q-switched pulse operation through an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) utilizing graphene oxide/titania (GO/TiO2) nanorods as a saturable absorber. The GO/TiO2 nanorods were fabricated using a Sol-gel-assisted hydrothermal method. The optical and physical characterization of the GO/TiO2 was then characterized using a field-emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and diffuses reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). To investigate the performance of the Q-switched EDFL based on the GO/TiO2 SA, the prepared nanorods were mechanically deposited on the fiber ferrule employing adhesion effects of in-dex-matching gel. This integration of the nanorod SA resulted in a self-starting Q-switching opera-tion initiated at a pump power of 17.5 mW and sustained up to 306.9 mW. When the pump range was tuned from 17.5 to 306.9 mW, the emission wavelength varied from 1564.2 to 1562.9 nm, pulse repetition rates increased from 13.87 kHz to 83.33 kHz, and pulse width decreased from 30.27 µs to 3.75 µs. Moreover, at the maximum pump power of 306.9 mW, the laser exhibited an average output power of 0.74 mW, a peak power of 1.54 mW, and a pulse energy of 8.88 nJ. Furthermore, this study investigates the GO/TiO2 damage threshold and prolonged stability of the proposed EDFL system.

Abstract
As a member of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), NbTe2 has a work function of 5.32 eV and a band gap of 0 eV at the Fermi level, which enables it to possess broadband absorption characteristics and has huge potential in optoelectronic devices. In this work, a combination of liquid phase exfoliation (LPE) and optical deposition methods (ODMs) were used to fabricate a NbTe2 saturable absorber (SA). Based on the NbTe2 SA, a ring passive mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (PML-EDFL) was constructed by adding NbTe2 SA into the laser cavity. A switchable single- to multiwavelength (dual/triple/quadruple) conventional soliton (CS) and a bound-state soliton (BS) were observed for the first time. The results reveal that NbTe2 SA has excellent saturable absorption characteristics (modulation depth of 2.6%, saturation intensity of 177.4 MW/cm2, and unsaturated loss of 63.8%) and can suppress mode competition and stabilize multiwavelength oscillation. This study expands the applications of NbTe2 nanosheets in ultrafast optoelectronics. The proposed switchable PML-EDFL has extensive applications in high-capacity all-optical communication, high-sensitivity optical fiber sensing, high-precision spectral measurements, and high-energy-efficiency photon neural networks.

Abstract
Metal nanoparticles (MNPs) are synthesized using various techniques on diverse substrates that significantly impact their properties. However, among the substrate materials investigated, the major challenge is the stability of MNPs due to their poor adhesion to the substrate. Herein, it is demonstrated how a newly developed H-glass can concurrently stabilize plasmonic gold nanoislands (GNIs) and offer multifunctional applications. The GNIs on the H-glass are synthesized using a simple yet, robust thermal dewetting process. The H-glass embedded with GNIs demonstrates versatility in its applications, such as i) acting as a room temperature chemiresistive gas sensor (70% response for NO2 gas); ii) serving as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for the identifications of Nile blue (dye) and picric acid (explosive) analytes down to nanomolar concentrations with enhancement factors of 4.8 × 106 and 6.1 × 105 , respectively; and iii) functioning as a nonlinear optical saturable absorber with a saturation intensity of 18.36 × 1015 W m-2 at 600 nm, and the performance characteristics are on par with those of materials reported in the existing literature. This work establishes a facile strategy to develop advanced materials by depositing metal nanoislands on glass for various functional applications.

Abstract
Using aqueous precursors, we report successfully fabricating thin-solid films of two nucleic acids, ribonucleic acid (RNA) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). We investigated the potential of these films deposited on a fiber optic platform as all-fiber integrated saturable absorbers (SAs) for ultrafast nonlinear optics. RNA-SA performances were comparable to those of DNA-SA in terms of its nonlinear transmission, modulation depth, and saturation intensity. Upon insertion of these devices into an Erbium-doped fiber ring-laser cavity, both RNA and DNA SAs enabled efficient passive Q-switching operation. RNA-SA application further facilitated robust mode-locking and generated a transform-limited soliton pulse, exhibiting a pulse duration of 633 femtoseconds. A detailed analysis of these pulsed laser characteristics compared RNA and DNA fiber optic SAs with other nonlinear optic materials. The findings of this research establish the feasibility of utilizing RNA as a saturable absorber in ultrafast laser systems with an equal or higher potential as DNA, which presents novel possibilities for the nonlinear photonic applications of nucleic acid thin solid films.

Abstract
We numerically study a hybrid mode-locked holmium-doped fiber laser based on the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations, by introducing nonlinear polarization rotation and saturable absorber in a same cavity. Maps of mode-locking states related to the intracavity wave-plates are created to evaluate the stability of mode-locking. Nonlinear polarization rotation imposes negative effect of linear absorption and even reverse saturable absorption to the pulses in the hybrid cavity. Saturable absorber compensates the negative effect from nonlinear polarization rotation, then consequently contributes to the stability of single-pulse mode-locking states. The extension of pulse time duration indicates the dynamic synergy between nonlinear polarization rotation and saturable absorber rather than the static combination mechanism of them.

Abstract
We numerically investigate the deterministic generation of a perfect soliton crystal (PSC) in an optical microresonator functionalized with a saturable absorber (SA). The SA allows the direct formation of a PSC from an initial, periodic Turing roll. It prevents passage through a chaotic state, which induces a stochastic nature with regard to the number of generated dissipative Kerr solitons. We show that PSCs form deterministically, and the number is controlled by adjusting the input power and SA parameter. Our work provides a simple approach for obtaining a stable PSC that offers an ultrahigh repetition rate and a high comb output power.

Abstract
We demonstrate an increase of optical transmittance and saturable absorption of laser-treated free-standing single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) films. The combined acid and low-power non-destructive laser treatment ensures an enhancement of linear transmittance across the visible range and double-digit increase of the saturable absorption of femtosecond laser radiation at 795 nm. The saturable absorption coefficient and the ratio of saturable to non-saturable losses increase by 26% and 35%, correspondingly, while the saturation intensity decreases by 20% because of the treatment. Our analysis indicates that with the performed treatment one can significantly improve the nonlinear optical properties of free-standing SWNT-based ultrafast saturable absorbers.

Abstract
Black phosphorus (BP), a prosperous two-dimensional optoelectronic material, has been deeply developed for various optoelectronics applications. Here, we demonstrate a sub-hundred nanosecond passively Q-switched Er-doped all-fiber laser with BP as the saturable absorber (SA). The BP-SA is fabricated by a controllable optical deposition technique. To achieve the sub-hundred nanosecond Q-switching output, we deliberately enlarge the modulation depth of the BP-SA by suitably increasing the time and laser power of the optical deposition and shortening the laser cavity length with an integrated multifunctional component. A stable Q-switched pulse train was obtained with a pulse duration as narrow as 91 ns, and the Q-switched lasing characteristics based on the BP-SA have also been investigated and discussed. The experimental results indicate that the BP material can be employed as an effective SA for the nanosecond pulse generation.

Abstract
A passively mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser using a tungsten ditelluride saturable absorber (${{\rm WTe}_2}\mbox{-}{\rm SA}$WTe2-SA) is demonstrated. High-power mode-locked pulses with an average output power of 108.1 mW were achieved by incorporating the ${{\rm WTe}_2}\mbox{-}{\rm SA}$WTe2-SA into a thulium-doped fiber oscillator. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest average power obtained from a ${{\rm WTe}_2}\mbox{-}{\rm SA}$WTe2-SA-based fiber laser. We further amplified the output power to 5.60 W with an all-fiber thulium-doped double-cladding fiber amplifier. Our result indicates that ${{\rm WTe}_2}\mbox{-}{\rm SA}$WTe2-SA could be an excellent candidate for a high-power fiber laser system.

Abstract
We report a study on the switching of the generation regimes in a high-powered thulium-doped all-fiber ring oscillator that is passively mode-locked with nonlinear polarization evolution technique with different pumping rates and cavity dispersion values. In one experimental setup, switching was observed between the noise-like pulse and the multi-soliton (in the forms of soliton bunches and soliton rain) regimes by the adjustment of the intracavity polarization controllers. We attributed this to the crucial influence of the nonlinear polarization evolution strength determined by such key parameters as saturation (over-rotation) power, linear phase bias, and nonlinear losses on the pulse evolution and stability. So the soliton collapse effect (leading to noise-like pulse generation) or the peak power clamping effect (generating a bunch of loosely-bound solitons) may determine pulse dynamics. Both the spectrum bandwidth and coherence time were studied for noise-like pulses by varying the cavity length and pump power, as well as the duration of solitons composing bunches. As a result, both noise-like pulses (with spectrum as broad as 32 nm bandwidth) and multi-soliton formations (with individual pulse-widths ranging from 748 to 1273 fs with a cavity length increase from 12 to 53 m) with up to 730 mW average power were generated at a wavelength of around 1.9 μm. The results are important for the realization of the broadband and smooth supercontinuum which can be used as a source for mid-IR vibrational spectroscopy of gas samples for breath analysis and environmental sensing.

Abstract
Materials with electrically tunable optical properties offer a wide range of opportunities for photonic applications. The optical properties of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) can be significantly altered in the near-infrared region by means of electrochemical doping. The states' filling, which is responsible for the optical absorption suppression under doping, also alters the nonlinear optical response of the material. Here, for the first time we report that the electrochemical doping can tailor the nonlinear optical absorption of SWCNT films and demonstrate its application to control pulsed fiber laser generation. With a pump-probe technique, we show that under an applied voltage below 2 V the photobleaching of the material can be gradually reduced and even turned to photoinduced absorption. Furthermore, we integrated a carbon nanotube electrochemical cell on a side-polished fiber to tune the absorption saturation and implemented it into the fully polarization-maintaining fiber laser. We show that the pulse generation regime can be reversibly switched between femtosecond mode-locking and microsecond Q-switching using different gate voltages. This approach paves the road toward carbon nanotube optical devices with tunable nonlinearity.

Abstract
In 2003, carbon nanotubes opened a new field of research on nanomaterial-based mode-locked fiber lasers. They maintain popularity in the ultrafast laser community due to their broadband operation, relatively high damage threshold, and tunable optical properties. Here we show that metallic carbon nanotube-based thin film fabricated by vacuum filtration technique can be used as a saturable absorber in holmium-doped fiber laser operating in anomalous and normal dispersion regimes. Scaling the absorbers modulation depth by adjusting the film thickness was observed. The Fourier transform limited 6.65 nm wide optical solitons in anomalous dispersion regime were generated. Utilizing stretched-pulse regime greatly improves the laser performance - 212 fs pulses reach the energy of 3.79 nJ.

Abstract
We investigate a new type of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-doped sol-gel glass saturable absorber (SA) fabricated by sol-gel technique. The reagents used for the sol-gel glass contain Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), ethanol, water, and hydrochloric acid. Different from the traditional ways of fabricating SAs, the MoS2 in our method is encapsulated by inorganic sol-gel glass instead of polymer compound with low laser damage resistance, which greatly increases the optical damage threshold of MoS2 SA. The MoS2-doped sol-gel glass as an SA is experimentally demonstrated in a passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL). Stable mode-locked pulse trains are successfully generated in the normal dispersion regime with a pulse width of 13.8 ps and the average output power of 34.6 mW. The fluctuation of the central wavelength and spectral bandwidth is as low as 0.9% in one week, which indicates that the mode-locking state has good environmental stability. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first example of sol-gel glass SA for ultrafast pulses generated in YDFL, which potentially gives a new approach to improve optical damage threshold and long-term working stability for broadband absorbers.

Abstract
In this paper, we report on the experimental observation of harmonic mode locking (HML) fiber laser based on evanescent field of tapered fiber using topological insulator (TI) Bi2Te3 saturable absorber (SA). The optical deposition method was adopted to fabricate the tapered fiber-based TISA. By significant nonlinear optical property of the tapered fiber TISA and high nonlinear fiber (HNLF), the fiber laser could operate at the pulse repetition of 3.125 GHz under 976 nm pump power of 148 mW, the pulse width of 1.754 ps, and the output power of 6.4 mW. Our results demonstrate that the tapered fiber TI device and HNLF can act as both high nonlinear optical component and SA in fiber lasers, and could also have better performance to achieve ultrashort pulses with ultrahigh repetition.
