Donor-Acceptor Hybrid Heterostructures: An Emerging Class of Photoactive Materials with Inorganic and Organic Semiconductive Components

Just as the heterojunctions in physics, donor-acceptor (D-A) heterostructures are an emerging class of photoactive materials fabricated from two semiconductive components at the molecular level. Among them, D-A hybrid heterostructures from organic and inorganic semiconductive components have attracted extensive attention in the past decades due to their combined advantages of high stability for the inorganic semiconductors and modifiability for the organic semiconductors, which are particularly beneficial to efficiently achieve photoinduced charge separation and transfer upon irradiations. In this review, by analogy with the heterojunctions in physics, a definition of the D-A heterostructures and their general design and synthetic strategies are given. Meanwhile, the D-A hybrid heterostructures are focused on and their recent advances in potential applications of photochromism, photomodulated luminescence, and photocatalysis summarized.

Photochromic copolymers containing 3-indolylfulgides/indolylfulgimides: synthesis and photochemical properties in toluene and as films

Photochromic indolylfulgimides covalently attached to polymers have beneficial properties for optical switching. A 3-indolylfulgide and two 3-indolylfulgimides with one or two polymerizable styrene groups attached on the nitrogen atom(s) were synthesized. Copolymerization with methyl methacrylate (MMA) provided linear copolymers (one styrene group) or a cross-linked copolymer (two styrene groups). The properties of the monomers and copolymers in toluene or as thin films were characterized. The new copolymers were photochromic (reversible Z-to-C isomerization), absorbed visible light, and revealed good thermal and photochemical stability. At room temperature, all copolymer films showed no loss of absorbance after 5 weeks. At 80 °C in either toluene or as films, the Z-forms copolymers were less stable than the C-form copolymers, which showed little or no degradation after 400 h. The degradation rate due to repeated ring-closing - ring opening cycles was less than 3% per 100 cycles. The cross-linked copolymer showed photochemical stability comparable to monomeric fulgides in toluene, <1% per 100 cycles. In general, the properties of the linear and cross-linked copolymers were similar to the corresponding monomers in toluene. In films, the conformations of the Z-form were restricted due to the matrix indicating that the preparation of films from the C-form is advantageous.

Fluorescence modulation with photochromic switches in nanostructured constructs

This tutorial review illustrates the structural design, photochemical and photophysical properties of nanostructured constructs incorporating luminescent and photochromic components. In these systems, the pronounced structural and electronic modifications that accompany the transformations of the photochromic components can be exploited to modulate the emission intensity of the luminescent components on the basis of electron and energy transfer processes. These photoresponsive systems can be assembled by: (1) integrating fluorescent and photochromic components within the main chain of the same polymer; (2) attaching multiple photochromes to a fluorescent organic polymer or luminescent inorganic nanoparticle; (3) appending either independent fluorophores and photochromes or fluorophore-photochrome dyads to a common polymer scaffold; (4) trapping distinct fluorophores and photochromes within the hydrophobic interior of the same cross-linked polymer. In all instances, the changes in absorbance and/or redox potentials associated with the reversible interconversion of the two states of each photochromic component regulate the radiative deactivation of the luminescent components. As a result, the emission intensity of these nanoscaled assemblies can reversibly be switched between high and low values under the influence of optical stimulations. Thus, these clever operating principles for fluorescence modulation can lead to the development of innovative functional and nanostructured materials with photoresponsive character. In particular, protocols for the optical writing and reading of data as well as luminescent probes for bioimaging applications might ultimately emerge from these fundamental studies on photoresponsive molecular switches.
