Singular and Nonsingular Transitions in the Infrared Plasmons of Nearly Touching Nanocube Dimers

Narrow gaps between plasmon-supporting materials can confine infrared electromagnetic energy at the nanoscale, thus enabling applications in areas such as optical sensing. However, in nanoparticle dimers, the nature of the transition between touching (zero gap) and nearly nontouching (nonzero gap ≲15 nm) regimes is still a subject of debate. Here, we observe both singular and nonsingular transitions in infrared plasmons confined to dimers of fluorine-doped indium oxide nanocubes when moving from touching to nontouching configurations depending on the dimensionality of the contact region. Through spatially resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, we find a continuous spectral evolution of the lowest-order plasmon mode across the transition for finite touching areas, in excellent agreement with the simulations. This behavior challenges the widely accepted idea that a singular transition always emerges in the near-touching regime of plasmonic particle dimers. The apparent contradiction is resolved by theoretically examining different types of gap morphologies, revealing that the presence of a finite touching area renders the transition nonsingular, while one-dimensional and point-like contacts produce a singular behavior in which the lowest-order dipolar mode in the touching configuration, characterized by a net induced charge in each of the particles, becomes unphysical as soon as they are separated. Our results provide valuable insights into the nature of dimer plasmons in highly doped semiconductors.

Uniform colloidal synthesis of highly branched chiral gold nanoparticles

We present a uniform colloidal synthesis of highly branched gold nanoparticles (GNPs) including nanospheres, nanoplatelets and nanorods by cysteine-assisted seeded growth. The highly branched GNPs show blackbody-like absorption and chirality simultaneously, holding great potential for plasmonic or photothermal applications.

Plasmonic couplings in Ag-Au heterodimers

The plasmonic coupling between silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) under four polarization modes was examined: a longitudinal mode (L-mode), where the electric field of a linearly polarized incident light parallels the dimer axis, and three transverse modes (T-modes), where the electric field of the light is perpendicular to the dimer axis. The coupling was studied using the discrete dipole approximation followed by an in-house postprocessing code that determines the extinction (Qext), absorption (Qabs), and near-field (Qnf) spectra from the individual NPs as well as the whole system. In agreement with the literature results, the extinction/absorption spectra of the whole dimer have two peaks, one near the Ag localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) region and the other at the Au LSPR region, with the peak at Ag LSPR being reduced in all modes and the peak at Au LSPR being red-shifted and increased in the L-mode but not in the T-modes. It is further shown that the scattering at the Ag LSPR region is reduced and becomes less than the isolated Ag NPs, but the absorption at the Ag LSPR is increased and becomes greater than the isolated Ag NPs for the 50 nm Ag-Au heterodimer. This suggests that the scattering from Ag NPs is being reabsorbed by the neighboring Au NPs due to the interband electronic transition in Au at that wavelength range. The Qext from the individual NP in the heterodimer shows the presence of the Fano profile on the Au NP but not on the Ag NP. This phenomenon was further investigated by using a dielectric particle (DP) placed near the Ag or Au NPs. The Fano profile appears in the absorbing DP spectra placed near either Ag or Au NPs. However, the Fano profile is masked upon further increases in the refractive index value of the DP particle. This explains the absence of a Fano profile on the Ag NPs in the Ag-Au heterodimer. The large near-field enhancement on both Ag and Au NPs at the Au plasmonic wavelength in the L-mode for large NPs was investigated through a DP-Au system. The large enhancement was shown to arise from a large imaginary component of the DP refractive index and a small real component. Through examination of both the near- and far-field properties of the individual NPs as well as the whole system and examinations of DP-Ag and DP-Au systems, our study provides a new understanding of the couplings between Ag and Au NPs.

Operando UV-vis spectroscopy for real-time monitoring of nanoparticle size in reaction conditions: a case study on rWGS over Au nanoparticles

We propose the use of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as a distinctive marker for real-time monitoring in reaction conditions of gold nanoparticles supported on α-Al2O3. The study leverages the SPR shape-and-size dependency to monitor metal nanoparticles in reaction conditions, evidencing an influence of both dimensions and agglomerations on the SPR peak position. Operando measurements, coupling UV-vis spectroscopy and catalytic testing, allows to follow the dynamics during nanoparticle formation (Au3+ to Au0 reduction) and during the reverse water gas shift reaction (CO2 + H2 → CO + H2O). The catalyst structure and stability in reaction conditions was further confirmed by operando X-ray spectroscopy and PXRD data. Overall, this approach enables the direct acquisition of information on the structure-activity relationship of metal-based supported catalysts under actual reaction conditions.

Three-atom-wide gold quantum rods with periodic elongation and strongly polarized excitons

Atomically precise control over anisotropic nanoclusters constitutes a grand challenge in nanoscience. In this work, we report our success in achieving a periodic series of atomically precise gold quantum rods (abbrev. Au QRs) with unusual excitonic properties. These QRs possess hexagonal close-packed kernels with a constant three-atom diameter but increasing aspect ratios (ARs) from 6.3 to 18.7, all being protected by the same thiolate (SR) ligand. The kernels of the QRs are in a Au1-(Au3)n-Au1 configuration (where n is the number of Au3 layers) and follow a periodic elongation with a uniform Au18(SR)12 increment consisting of four Au3 layers. These Au QRs possess distinct HOMO-LUMO gaps (Eg = 0.6 to 1.3 eV) and exhibit strongly polarized excitonic transition along the longitudinal direction, resulting in very intense absorption in the near-infrared (800 to 1,700 nm). While excitons in gapped systems and plasmons in gapless systems are distinctly different types of excitations, the strongly polarized excitons in Au QRs surprisingly exhibit plasmon-like behaviors manifested in the shape-induced polarization, very intense absorption (~106 M-1 cm-1), and linear scaling relations with the AR, all of which resemble the behaviors of conventional metallic-state Au nanorods (i.e., gapless systems), but the QRs possess distinct gaps and very long excited-state lifetimes (10 to 2,122 ns), which hold promise in applications such as near-infrared solar energy utilization, hot carrier generation and transfer. The observation of plasmon-like behaviors from single-electron transitions in Au QRs elegantly bridges the distinct realms of single-electron and collective-electron excitations and may stimulate more research on excitonics and plasmonics.

Light Absorption Analysis and Optimization of Ag@TiO2 Core-Shell Nanospheroid and Nanorod

For photothermal therapy of cancer, it is necessary to find Ag @TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles that can freely tune the resonance wavelength within the near-infrared biological window. In this paper, the finite element method and the size-dependent refractive index of metal nanoparticles were used to theoretically investigate the effects of the core material, core length, core aspect ratio, shell thickness, refractive index of the surrounding medium, and the particle orientation on the light absorption properties of Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanospheroid and nanorod. The calculations show that the position and intensity of the light absorption resonance peaks can be freely tuned within the first and second biological windows by changing the above-mentioned parameters. Two laser wavelengths commonly used in photothermal therapy, 808 nm (first biological window) and 1064 nm (second biological window), were selected to optimize the core length and aspect ratio of Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanospheroid and nanorod. It was found that the optimized Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanospheroid has a stronger light absorption capacity at the laser wavelengths of 808 nm and 1064 nm. The optimized Ag@TiO2 core-shell nanoparticles can be used as ideal therapeutic agents in photothermal therapy.

Bilateral passive thermal management for dynamical temperature regulation

Space heating and cooling of buildings account for [Formula: see text] 30% of energy consumed globally. As a result, efforts to reduce the carbon footprint associated with building temperature regulation are crucial to achieving sustainability goals. Passive radiative cooling and sun heating are two promising innovations that can help reduce the energy consumption associated with building temperature regulation. However, these methods are constrained by factors such as climate zones and seasonal changes. In this work, we demonstrate numerically that bilateral photonic metamaterials enabled by vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles embedded into polyethylene nanogratings can achieve dynamically modulate solar absorptance at one side in winter and achieve radiative cooling on another side. In cold weather, the solar absorptance of this metastructure can change from 0.93 to 0.2 at a critical temperature when VO2 changes from a metallic to an insulating state. This metastructure consists of broadband transparent polyethylene (PE) gratings on the reflective silver (Ag) gratings with the same period and filling ratio. These gratings are deposited on top of the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin film. The VO2 nanoparticles enable dynamic solar absorptance modulation for winter space heating, while the PDMS with strong infrared emittance derived from molecular vibrations over the atmospheric window for summer radiative cooling. Temperature response simulations validate that this bilateral design achieves   6 °C subambient temperature drop at noontime in the summer and stabilizes its temperature around 22 °C during the daytime in the winter. This passive dynamical thermal regulation technique can be deployed for energy-saving targets of buildings, vehicles, and greenhouses in areas with large temperature fluctuations.

Recent Advances in the 3D Chiral Plasmonic Nanomaterials

From the view of geometry, chirality is that an object cannot overlap with its mirror image, which has been a fundamental scientific problem in biology and chemistry since the 19th century. Chiral inorganic nanomaterials serve as ideal templates for investigating chiral transfer and amplification mechanisms between molecule and bulk materials, garnering widespread attentions. The chiroptical property of chiral plasmonic nanomaterials is enhanced through localized surface plasmon resonance effects, which exhibits distinctive circular dichroism (CD) response across a wide wavelength range. Recently, 3D chiral plasmonic nanomaterials are becoming a focal research point due to their unique characteristics and planar-independence. This review provides an overview of recent progresses in 3D chiral plasmonic nanomaterials studies. It begins by discussing the mechanisms of plasmonic enhancement of molecular CD response, following by a detailed presentation of novel classifications of 3D chiral plasmonic nanomaterials. Finally, the applications of 3D chiral nanomaterials such as biology, sensing, chiral catalysis, photology, and other fields have been discussed and prospected. It is hoped that this review will contribute to the flourishing development of 3D chiral nanomaterials.

Phase-transition materials derived photonic metamaterials for passively dynamic solar thermal and coldness harvesting

The rising need for energy to actively heat and cool human-made structures is contributing to the growing energy crisis and intensifying global warming. Consequently, there's a pressing need for a sustainable approach to temperature management that minimizes energy consumption and carbon emissions. The substantial temperature differences between the Sun (approximately 5800 K), Earth (around 300 K), and outer space (about 3 K) offer a unique opportunity for passive thermal regulation on a global scale. Recent research indicates the possibility of addressing this issue through various low-carbon, passive technologies such as solar heating and radiative cooling. However, their practical application is often limited to certain seasons and climatic regions due to their static and single-function nature in managing temperature. In this context, we introduce a concept of phase-change metamaterials that provide passive, dynamic, and adjustable radiative thermal control, suitable for widespread engineering applications. Our designed metafilm comprises a Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layer infused with vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanoparticles, backed by a layer of broadband-reflective silver (Ag). This metafilm exhibits a self-adjusting solar absorptance, shifting from 0.96 to 0.25 at a pivotal temperature while maintaining a nearly constant thermal emittance. We can finely tune the metafilm's optical characteristics by altering the VO2 nanoparticle concentration and PDMS layer thickness. To demonstrate its efficacy in solar thermal management and radiative cooling, we simulate its temperature behavior under various weather conditions.

Chiral Plasmonic Hybrid Nanostructures: A Gateway to Advanced Chiroptical Materials

Chirality introduces a new dimension of functionality to materials, unlocking new possibilities across various fields. When integrated with plasmonic hybrid nanostructures, this attribute synergizes with plasmonic and other functionalities, resulting in unprecedented chiroptical materials that push the boundaries of the system's capabilities. Recent advancements have illuminated the remarkable chiral light-matter interactions within chiral plasmonic hybrid nanomaterials, allowing for the harnessing of their tunable optical activity and hybrid components. These advancements have led to applications in areas such as chiral sensing, catalysis, and spin optics. Despite these promising developments, there remains a need for a comprehensive synthesis of the current state-of-the-art knowledge, as well as a thorough understanding of the construction techniques and practical applications in this field. This review begins with an exploration of the origins of plasmonic chirality and an overview of the latest advancements in the synthesis of chiral plasmonic hybrid nanostructures. Furthermore, representative emerging categories of hybrid nanomaterials are classified and summarized, elucidating their versatile applications. Finally, the review engages with the fundamental challenges associated with chiral plasmonic hybrid nanostructures and offer insights into the future prospects of this advanced field.

Super-resolution imaging for the detection of low-energy ion tracks in fine-grained nuclear emulsions

We propose a new wide-field imaging method that exploits the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance phenomenon to produce super-resolution images with an optical microscope equipped with a custom design polarization analyzer module. In this paper we describe the method and apply it to the analysis of low-energy carbon ion tracks implanted in a nuclear emulsion film. The result is then compared with the measurements of the same tracks carried out at an electronic microscope. The images set side by side show their close similarity. The resolution achieved with the current microscope setup is estimated to be about 50 nm.

Enrichment-Sensing All-in-One Strategy Integrated in the La(OH)3-Au@AgNPs Substrate for Rapid Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Analysis of Purine Components

Improving the speediness of complex sample analysis has attracted much research interest in analytical science. In this work, an enrichment-sensing all-in-one strategy was presented for rapid surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis of purine components by using the La(OH)3-Au@AgNPs nanocomposite. Two-dimensional (2D) La(OH)3 nanosheets with nanothickness and accessible active sites not only acted as efficient media for the rapid enrichment of analytes but also provided flat planes for the intensive decoration of Au@AgNPs nanoparticles to amplify the SERS signals of adsorbed analytes. The nanocomposite could realize the rapid enrichment-sensing of purine components in 1 min, including mercaptopurine, thioguanine, adenine, and purine. Subsequently, the surface adsorption behaviors were explored by density functional theory and the enhancement mechanisms were simulated by the finite-difference time-domain method. Moreover, the nanocomposite also exhibited good SERS performances with relative standard deviations (RSDs) of uniformity less than 6.5% (n = 23), RSDs of batch-to-batch stability less than 7.3% (n = 9), and long-term stability over 9 weeks with RSDs within 6.6%. Finally, the enrichment-sensing strategy was applied for the rapid SERS analysis of two projects: mercaptopurine in tablets and adenine in beers with detection limits of 6.0 and 0.76 μg/L and spiked recoveries of 90.9-100 and 84.2-101%, respectively. Benefiting from the high-performance enrichment medium and closely packed plasmonic nanoparticles, the enrichment-sensing all-in-one strategy possesses great potential for rapid on-site detection in food safety and pharmaceutical analysis.

From Multi- to Single-Hollow Trimetallic Nanocrystals by Ultrafast Heating

Metal nanocrystals (NCs) display unique physicochemical features that are highly dependent on nanoparticle dimensions, anisotropy, structure, and composition. The development of synthesis methodologies that allow us to tune such parameters finely emerges as crucial for the application of metal NCs in catalysis, optical materials, or biomedicine. Here, we describe a synthetic methodology to fabricate hollow multimetallic heterostructures using a combination of seed-mediated growth routes and femtosecond-pulsed laser irradiation. The envisaged methodology relies on the coreduction of Ag and Pd ions on gold nanorods (Au NRs) to form Au@PdAg core-shell nanostructures containing small cavities at the Au-PdAg interface. The excitation of Au@PdAg NRs with low fluence femtosecond pulses was employed to induce the coalescence and growth of large cavities, forming multihollow anisotropic Au@PdAg nanostructures. Moreover, single-hollow alloy AuPdAg could be achieved in high yield by increasing the irradiation energy. Advanced electron microscopy techniques, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) tomography, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy, and finite differences in the time domain (FDTD) simulations allowed us to characterize the morphology, structure, and elemental distribution of the irradiated NCs in detail. The ability of the reported synthesis route to fabricate multimetallic NCs with unprecedented hollow nanostructures offers attractive prospects for the fabrication of tailored high-entropy alloy nanoparticles.

Novel Characterization Techniques for Multifunctional Plasmonic-Magnetic Nanoparticles in Biomedical Applications

In the rapidly emerging field of biomedical applications, multifunctional nanoparticles, especially those containing magnetic and plasmonic components, have gained significant attention due to their combined properties. These hybrid systems, often composed of iron oxide and gold, provide both magnetic and optical functionalities and offer promising avenues for applications in multimodal bioimaging, hyperthermal therapies, and magnetically driven selective delivery. This paper focuses on the implementation of advanced characterization methods, comparing statistical analyses of individual multifunctional particle properties with macroscopic properties as a way of fine-tuning synthetic methodologies for their fabrication methods. Special emphasis is placed on the size-dependent properties, biocompatibility, and challenges that can arise from this versatile nanometric system. In order to ensure the quality and applicability of these particles, various novel methods for characterizing the magnetic gold particles, including the analysis of their morphology, optical response, and magnetic response, are also discussed, with the overall goal of optimizing the fabrication of this complex system and thus enhancing its potential as a preferred diagnostic agent.

An Investigation on the Use of Au@SiO2@Au Nanomatryoshkas as Gap-Enhanced Raman Tags

Gap-enhanced Raman tags are a new type of optical probe that have wide applications in sensing and detection. A gap-enhanced Raman tag is prepared by embedding Raman molecules inside a gap between two plasmonic metals such as an Au core and Au shell. Even though placing Raman molecules beneath an Au shell seems counter-intuitive, it has been shown that such systems produce a stronger surface-enhanced Raman scattering response due to the strong electric field inside the gap. While the theoretical support of the stronger electric field inside the gap was provided in the literature, a comprehensive understanding of how the electric field inside the gap compares with that of the outer surface of the particle was not readily available. We investigated Au@SiO2@Au nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 35 nm to 70 nm with varying shell (2.5-10 nm) and gap (2.5-15 nm) thicknesses and obtained both far-field and near-field spectra. The extinction spectra from these particles always have two peaks. The low-energy peak redshifts with the decreasing shell thickness. However, when the gap thickness decreases, the low-energy peaks first blueshift and then redshift, producing a C-shape in the peak position. For every system we investigated, the near-field enhancement spectra were stronger inside the gap than on the outer surface of the nanoparticle. We find that a thin shell combined with a thin gap will produce the greatest near-field enhancement inside the gap. Our work fills the knowledge gap between the exciting potential applications of gap-enhanced Raman tags and the fundamental knowledge of enhancement provided by the gap.

Smartphone-enabled colorimetric visual quantification of highly hazardous trivalent chromium ions in environmental waters and catalytic reduction of p-nitroaniline by thiol-functionalized gold nanoparticles

High-efficiency sensing systems for extremely hazardous chromium (Cr(III)) ions are important due to their detrimental effects on human health and the environment. We employed a spectrophotometric method combined with a smartphone (red, green, and blue (RGB) color ratio)-based detection platform to realize the quick, visually quantifiable in situ detection of Cr(III) ions using surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-aided colorimetry. For optical sensing nanoprobes, we synthesized the 2-Mercapto-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole (MMT)-modified gold nanoparticles (MMT-AuNPs) using a wet chemical method. By way of a coordination reaction, the Cr(III) ions induce the as-prepared MMT-AuNPs to aggregate and subsequently change the SPR wavelength band. The freshly synthesized MMT-AuNPs exhibited a wine-red color. While Cr(III) ions interact with the MMT-AuNPs, the color of the latter evolved from wine red to purple, thus facilitating visual monitoring. The SPR-relevant color change allowed the quantitative sensing of Cr(III) ions in the range of 40-128 nM, with the limit of detection of 6.93 nM when employing the spectrophotometric method and 12.4 nM when using the smartphone RGB color ratio. Furthermore, we developed the spectrophotometric technique that used the smartphone RGB color ratio for on-site analysis of Cr(III) ions in environmental water samples, indicating the possibility of its chemo-sensing applications for portable quantitative detection devices. Additionally, the catalytic performance of the MMT-AuNPs was demonstrated by the reduction of p-nitroaniline in the presence of sodium borohydride. It was interestingly unveiled that the MMT-AuNPs showed outstanding catalytic performance with a catalytic rate constant of 6.31 × 10-3 s-1.

Confinement Effects on the Structure of Entropy-Induced Supercrystals

Depletion-induced self-assembly is routinely used to separate plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) of different shapes, but less often for its ability to create supercrystals (SCs) in suspension. Therefore, these plasmonic assemblies have not yet reached a high level of maturity and their in-depth characterization by a combination of in situ techniques is still very much needed. In this work, gold triangles (AuNTs) and silver nanorods (AgNRs) are assembled by depletion-induced self-assembly. Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the AuNTs and AgNRs form 3D and 2D hexagonal lattices in bulk, respectively. The colloidal crystals are also imaged by in situ Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy. Under confinement, the affinity of the NPs for the liquid cell windows reduces their ability to stack perpendicularly to the membrane and lead to SCs with a lower dimensionality than their bulk counterparts. Moreover, extended beam irradiation leads to disassembly of the lattices, which is well described by a model accounting for the desorption kinetics highlighting the key role of the NP-membrane interaction in the structural properties of SCs in the liquid-cell. The results shed light on the reconfigurability of NP superlattices obtained by depletion-induced self-assembly, which can rearrange under confinement.

Nanomechanical Photothermal Near Infrared Spectromicroscopy of Individual Nanorods

Understanding light-matter interaction at the nanoscale requires probing the optical properties of matter at the individual nanoabsorber level. To this end, we developed a nanomechanical photothermal sensing platform that can be used as a full spectromicroscopy tool for single molecule and single particle analysis. As a demonstration, the absorption cross-section of individual gold nanorods is resolved from a spectroscopic and polarization standpoint. By exploiting the capabilities of nanomechanical photothermal spectromicroscopy, the longitudinal localized surface plasmon resonance in the NIR range is unraveled and quantitatively characterized. The polarization features of the transversal surface plasmon resonance in the VIS range are also analyzed. The measurements are compared with the finite element method, elucidating the role played by electron surface and bulk scattering in these plasmonic nanostructures, as well as the interaction between the nanoabsorber and the nanoresonator, ultimately resulting in absorption strength modulation. Finally, a comprehensive comparison is conducted, evaluating the signal-to-noise ratio of nanomechanical photothermal spectroscopy against other cutting-edge single molecule and particle spectroscopy techniques. This analysis highlights the remarkable potential of nanomechanical photothermal spectroscopy due to its exceptional sensitivity.

The Rise of Structurally Anisotropic Plasmonic Janus Gold Nanostars

Nanostructures intrinsically possessing two different structural or functional features, often called Janus nanoparticles, are emerging as a potential material for sensing, catalysis, and biomedical applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of plasmonic gold Janus nanostars (NSs) possessing a smooth concave pentagonal morphology with sharp tips and edges on one side and, contrastingly, a crumbled morphology on the other. The methodology reported herein for their synthesis - a single-step growth reaction - is different from any other Janus nanoparticle preparation involving either template-assisted growth or a masking technique. Interestingly, the coexistence of lower- and higher-index facets was found in these Janus NSs. The general paradigm for synthesizing gold Janus NSs was investigated by understanding the kinetic control mechanism with the combinatorial effect of all the reagents responsible for the structure. The optical properties of the Janus NSs were realized by corelating their extinction spectra with the simulated data. The size-dependent surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of these Janus NSs was studied with 1,4-BDT as the model analyte. Finite-difference time-domain simulations for differently sized particles revealed the distribution of electromagnetic hot-spots over the particles resulting in enhancement of the SERS signal in a size-dependent manner.

Super-Radiant SERS Enhancement by Plasmonic Particle Gratings

Despite recent developments, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) applications face challenges in achieving both high sensitivity and uniform Raman signals over a large area. Using the directional self-assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles in lattice structures, we show how one can increase the SERS signal 43-fold over randomly aligned gold nanoparticles without relying on the photoluminescence of Rhodamine 6G. For this study, we have chosen the lattice constant for an off-resonant case that matches the lattice resonance and super-radiant plasmon mode along the particle chain. Supported by electromagnetic simulations, we systematically analyze the radiative components of the plasmon modes by varying the particle size while keeping the lattice periodicity constant. We perform polarization-dependent SERS measurements and compare them with other standard SERS excitation wavelengths. Using the self-assembled plasmonic particle lattice, we have developed an effective SERS substrate that provides a significantly higher signal with 73% less surface coverage. This colloidal approach enables the cost-effective and scalable fabrication of highly sensitive, uniform, and polarization-dependent SERS substrates.

Physical mechanisms of emerging neuromodulation modalities

One of the ultimate goals of neurostimulation field is to design materials, devices and systems that can simultaneously achieve safe, effective and tether-free operation. For that, understanding the working mechanisms and potential applicability of neurostimulation techniques is important to develop noninvasive, enhanced, and multi-modal control of neural activity. Here, we review direct and transduction-based neurostimulation techniques by discussing their interaction mechanisms with neurons via electrical, mechanical, and thermal means. We show how each technique targets modulation of specific ion channels (e.g. voltage-gated, mechanosensitive, heat-sensitive) by exploiting fundamental wave properties (e.g. interference) or engineering nanomaterial-based systems for efficient energy transduction. Overall, our review provides a detailed mechanistic understanding of neurostimulation techniques together with their applications toin vitro, in vivo, and translational studies to guide the researchers toward developing more advanced systems in terms of noninvasiveness, spatiotemporal resolution, and clinical applicability.

Microfluidic-Generated Seeds for Gold Nanotriangle Synthesis in Three or Two Steps

Nanoparticle synthesis has drawn great attention in the last decades. The study of crystal growth mechanisms and optimization of the existing methods lead to the increasing accessibility of nanomaterials, such as gold nanotriangles which have great potential in the fields of plasmonics and catalysis. To form such structures, a careful balance of reaction parameters has to be maintained. Herein, a novel synthesis of gold nanotriangles from seeds derived with a micromixer, which provides a highly efficient mixing and simple parameter control is reported. The impact of the implemented reactor on the primary seed characteristics is investigated. The following growth steps are studied to reveal the phenomena affecting the shape yield. The use of microfluidic seeds led to the formation of well-defined triangles with a narrower size distribution compared to the entirely conventional batch synthesis. A shortened two-step procedure for the formation of triangles directly from primary seeds, granting an express but robust synthesis is further described. Moreover, the need for a thorough study of seed crystallinity depending on the synthesis conditions, which - together with additional parameter optimization - will bring a new perspective to the use of micromixers which are promising for scaling up nanomaterial production is highlighted.

An Accelerated Method for Investigating Spectral Properties of Dynamically Evolving Nanostructures

The discrete-dipole approximation (DDA) is widely applied to study the spectral properties of plasmonic nanostructures. However, the high computational cost limits the application of DDA in static geometries, making it impractical for investigating spectral properties during structural transformations. Here we developed an efficient method to simulate spectra of dynamically evolving structures by formulating an iterative calculation process based on the rank-one decomposition of matrices and DDA. By representing structural transformation as the change of dipoles and their properties, the updated polarizations can be computed efficiently. The improvement in computational efficiency was benchmarked, demonstrating up to several hundred times acceleration for a system comprising ca. 4000 dipoles. The rank-one decomposition accelerated DDA method (RD-DDA) can be used directly to investigate the optical properties of nanostructural transformations defined by atomic- or continuum-scale processes, which is essential for understanding the growth mechanisms of nanoparticles and algorithm-driven structural optimization toward enhanced optical properties.

A multi-mode super-fano mechanism for enhanced third harmonic generation in silicon metasurfaces

We present strong enhancement of third harmonic generation in an amorphous silicon metasurface consisting of elliptical nano resonators. We show that this enhancement originates from a new type of multi-mode Fano mechanism. These 'Super-Fano' resonances are investigated numerically in great detail using full-wave simulations. The theoretically predicted behavior of the metasurface is experimentally verified by linear and nonlinear transmission spectroscopy. Moreover, quantitative nonlinear measurements are performed, in which an absolute conversion efficiency as high as η_max ≈ 2.8 × 10^-7 a peak power intensity of 1.2 GW cm^-2 is found. Compared to an unpatterned silicon film of the same thickness amplification factors of up to ~900 are demonstrated. Our results pave the way to exploiting a strong Fano-type multi-mode coupling in metasurfaces for high THG in potential applications.

Plasmonic Response of Complex Nanoparticle Assemblies

Optical properties of nanoparticle assemblies reflect distinctive characteristics of their building blocks and spatial organization, giving rise to emergent phenomena. Integrated experimental and computational studies have established design principles connecting the structure to properties for assembled clusters and superlattices. However, conventional electromagnetic simulations are too computationally expensive to treat more complex assemblies. Here we establish a fast, materials agnostic method to simulate the optical response of large nanoparticle assemblies incorporating both structural and compositional complexity. This many-bodied, mutual polarization method resolves limitations of established approaches, achieving rapid, accurate convergence for configurations including thousands of nanoparticles, with some overlapping. We demonstrate these capabilities by reproducing experimental trends and uncovering far- and near-field mechanisms governing the optical response of plasmonic semiconductor nanocrystal assemblies including structurally complex gel networks and compositionally complex mixed binary superlattices. This broadly applicable framework will facilitate the design of complex, hierarchically structured, and dynamic assemblies for desired optical characteristics.

A Nanoparticle-Based Model System for the Study of Heterogeneous Nucleation Phenomena

Heterogeneous nucleation processes are involved in many important phenomena in nature, including devastating human diseases caused by amyloid structures or the harmful frost formed on fruits. However, understanding them is challenging due to the difficulties of characterizing the initial stages of the process occurring at the interface between the nucleation medium and the substrate surfaces. This work implements a model system based on gold nanoparticles to investigate the effect of particle surface chemistry and substrate properties on heterogeneous nucleation processes. Using widely available techniques such as UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and light microscopy, gold nanoparticle-based superstructure formation was studied in the presence of substrates with different hydrophilicity and electrostatic charges. The results were evaluated on grounds of classical nucleation theory (CNT) to reveal kinetic and thermodynamic contributions of the heterogeneous nucleation process. In contrast to nucleation from ions, the kinetic contributions toward nucleation turned out to be larger than the thermodynamic contributions for the nanoparticle building blocks. Electrostatic interactions between substrates and nanoparticles with opposite charges were crucial to enhancing the nucleation rates and decreasing the nucleation barrier of superstructure formation. Thereby, the described strategy is demonstrated advantageous for characterizing physicochemical aspects of heterogeneous nucleation processes in a simple and accessible manner, which could be potentially explored to study more complex nucleation phenomena.

The progress of research on the application of redox nanomaterials in disease therapy

Redox imbalance can trigger cell dysfunction and damage and plays a vital role in the origin and progression of many diseases. Maintaining the balance between oxidants and antioxidants in vivo is a complicated and arduous task, leading to ongoing research into the construction of redox nanomaterials. Nanodrug platforms with redox characteristics can not only reduce the adverse effects of oxidative stress on tissues by removing excess oxidants from the body but also have multienzyme-like activity, which can play a cytotoxic role in tumor tissues through the catalytic oxidation of their substrates to produce harmful reactive oxygen species such as hydroxyl radicals. In this review, various redox nanomaterials currently used in disease therapy are discussed, emphasizing the treatment methods and their applications in tumors and other human tissues. Finally, the limitations of the current clinical application of redox nanomaterials are considered.

Optical Modeling of Plasmonic Nanoparticles with Electronically Depleted Layers

Doped metal oxide (MO) nanocrystals (NCs) are well-known for the localized surface plasmon resonance in the infrared range generated by free electrons in the conduction band of the material. Owing to the intimate connection between plasmonic features and the NC's carrier density profile, proper modeling can unveil the underlying electronic structure. The carrier density profile in MO NCs is characterized by the presence of an electronically depleted layer as a result of the Fermi level pinning at the surface of the NC. Moreover, the carrier profile can be spatially engineered by tuning the dopant concentrations in core-shell architectures, generating a rich plethora of plasmonic features. In this work, we systematically studied the influence of the simulation parameters used for optical modeling of representative experimental absorption spectra by implementing multilayer models. We highlight in particular the importance of minimizing the fit parameters by support of experimental results and the importance of interparameter relationships. We show that, in all cases investigated, the depletion layer is fundamental to correctly describe the continuous spectra evolution. We foresee that this multilayer model can be used to design the optoelectronic properties of core-shell systems in the framework of energy band and depletion layer engineering.

Non-Invasive, Reliable, and Fast Quantification of DNA Loading on Gold Nanoparticles by a One-Step Optical Measurement

An exquisite, versatile, and reproducible quantification of DNA loading on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) has long been pursued because this loading influences the analytical, therapeutic, and self-assembly behaviors of DNA-Au NPs. Nevertheless, the existing methods used thus far rely solely on the invasive detachment and subsequent spectroscopic quantification of DNA, which are error-prone and highly dependent on trained personnel. Here, we present a non-invasive optical framework that can determine the number of DNA strands on Au NPs by versatile one-step measurement of the visible absorption spectra of DNA-Au NP solutions without any invasive modifications or downstream processes. Using effective medium theory in conjunction with electromagnetic numerical calculation, the change in DNA loading density, resulting from varying the ion concentration, Au NP size, DNA strand length, and surrounding temperature, can be tracked in situ merely by the one-step measurement of visible absorption spectra, which is otherwise impossible to achieve. Moreover, the simplicity and robustness of this method promote reproducible DNA loading quantification regardless of experimental adeptness, which is in stark contrast with existing invasive and multistep methods. Overall, the optical framework outlined in this work can contribute to democratizing research on DNA-Au NPs and facilitating their rapid adoption in transformative applications.

Chiral Seeded Growth of Gold Nanorods Into Fourfold Twisted Nanoparticles with Plasmonic Optical Activity

A robust and reproducible methodology to prepare stable inorganic nanoparticles with chiral morphology may hold the key to the practical utilization of these materials. An optimized chiral growth method to prepare fourfold twisted gold nanorods is described herein, where the amino acid cysteine is used as a dissymmetry inducer. Four tilted ridges are found to develop on the surface of single-crystal nanorods upon repeated reduction of HAuCl4 , in the presence of cysteine as the chiral inducer and ascorbic acid as a reducing agent. From detailed electron microscopy analysis of the crystallographic structures, it is proposed that the dissymmetry results from the development of chiral facets in the form of protrusions (tilted ridges) on the initial nanorods, eventually leading to a twisted shape. The role of cysteine is attributed to assisting enantioselective facet evolution, which is supported by density functional theory simulations of the surface energies, modified upon adsorption of the chiral molecule. The development of R-type and S-type chiral structures (small facets, terraces, or kinks) would thus be non-equal, removing the mirror symmetry of the Au NR and in turn resulting in a markedly chiral morphology with high plasmonic optical activity.

Chiral Au Nanorods: Synthesis, Chirality Origin, and Applications

Chiral Au nanorods (c-Au NRs) with diverse architectures constitute an interesting nanospecies in the field of chiral nanophotonics. The numerous possible plasmonic behaviors of Au NRs can be coupled with chirality to initiate, tune, and amplify their chiroptical response. Interdisciplinary technologies have boosted the development of fabrication and applications of c-Au NRs. Herein, we have focused on the role of chirality in c-Au NRs which helps to manipulate the light-matter interaction in nontraditional ways. A broad overview on the chirality origin, chirality transfer, chiroptical activities, artificially synthetic methodologies, and circularly polarized applications of c-Au NRs will be summarized and discussed. A deeper understanding of light-matter interaction in c-Au NRs will help to manipulate the chirality at the nanoscale, reveal the natural evolution process taking place, and set up a series of circularly polarized applications.

Colloidal Synthesis of Metal Nanocrystals: From Asymmetrical Growth to Symmetry Breaking

Nanocrystals offer a unique platform for tailoring the physicochemical properties of solid materials to enhance their performances in various applications. While most work on controlling their shapes revolves around symmetrical growth, the introduction of asymmetrical growth and thus symmetry breaking has also emerged as a powerful route to enrich metal nanocrystals with new shapes and complex morphologies as well as unprecedented properties and functionalities. The success of this route critically relies on our ability to lift the confinement on symmetry by the underlying unit cell of the crystal structure and/or the initial seed in a systematic manner. This Review aims to provide an account of recent progress in understanding and controlling asymmetrical growth and symmetry breaking in a colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. With a touch on both the nucleation and growth steps, we discuss a number of methods capable of generating seeds with diverse symmetry while achieving asymmetrical growth for mono-, bi-, and multimetallic systems. We then showcase a variety of symmetry-broken nanocrystals that have been reported, together with insights into their growth mechanisms. We also highlight their properties and applications and conclude with perspectives on future directions in developing this class of nanomaterials. It is hoped that the concepts and existing challenges outlined in this Review will drive further research into understanding and controlling the symmetry breaking process.

Large-Area Periodic Arrays of Atomically Flat Single-Crystal Gold Nanotriangles Formed Directly on Substrate Surfaces

The advancement of nanoenabled wafer-based devices requires the establishment of core competencies related to the deterministic positioning of nanometric building blocks over large areas. Within this realm, plasmonic single-crystal gold nanotriangles represent one of the most attractive nanoscale components but where the formation of addressable arrays at scale has heretofore proven impracticable. Herein, a benchtop process is presented for the formation of large-area periodic arrays of gold nanotriangles. The devised growth pathway sees the formation of an array of defect-laden seeds using lithographic and vapor-phase assembly processes followed by their placement in a growth solution promoting planar growth and threefold symmetric side-faceting. The nanotriangles formed in this high-yield synthesis distinguish themselves in that they are epitaxially aligned with the underlying substrate, grown to thicknesses that are not readily obtainable in colloidal syntheses, and present atomically flat pristine surfaces exhibiting gold atoms with a close-packed structure. As such, they express crisp and unambiguous plasmonic modes and form photoactive surfaces with highly tunable and readily modeled plasmon resonances. The devised methods, hence, advance the integration of single-crystal gold nanotriangles into device platforms and provide an overall fabrication strategy that is adaptable to other nanomaterials.

Size characterization of plasmonic nanoparticles with dark-field single particle spectrophotometry

Plasmonic nanoparticles are widely used in multiple scientific and industrial applications. Although many synthesis methods have been reported in the literature throughout the last decade, controlling the size and shape of large populations still remains as a challenge. As size and shape variations have a strong impact in their plasmonic properties, the need to have metrological techniques to accurately characterize their morphological features is peremptory. We present a new optical method referred as Dark-Field Single Particle Spectrophotometry which is able to measure the individual sizes of thousands of particles with nanometric accuracy in just a couple of minutes. Our method also features an easy sample preparation, a straightforward experimental setup inspired on a customized optical microscope, and a measurement protocol simple enough to be carried out by untrained technicians. As a proof of concept, thousands of spherical nanoparticles of different sizes have been measured, and after a direct comparison with metrological gold standard electron microscopy, a discrepancy of 3% has been attested. Although its feasibility has been demonstrated on spherical nanoparticles, the true strengthness of the method is that it can be generalized also to nanoparticles with arbitrary shapes and geometries, thus representing an advantageous alternative to the gold-standard electron microscopy.

DNA-mediated dynamic plasmonic nanostructures: assembly, actuation, optical properties, and biological applications

Recent advances in DNA technology have made it possible to combine with the plasmonics to fabricate reconfigurable dynamic nanodevices with extraordinary property and function. These DNA-mediated plasmonic nanostructures have been investigated for a variety of unique and beneficial physicochemical properties and their dynamic behavior has been controlled by endogenous or exogenous stimuli for a variety of interesting biological applications. In this perspective, the recent efforts to use the DNA nanostructures as molecular linkers for fabricating dynamic plasmonic nanostructures are reviewed. Next, the actuation media for triggering the dynamic behavior of plasmonic nanostructures and the dynamic response in optical features are summarized. Finally, the applications, remaining challenges and perspectives of the DNA-mediated dynamic plasmonic nanostructures are discussed.

Nanoscale Valley Modulation by Surface Plasmon Interference

Excitons in two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted the attention of the community to develop improved photoelectronic devices. Previous reports are based on direct excitation where the out-of-plane illumination projects a uniform single-mode light spot. However, because of the optical diffraction limit, the minimal spot size is a few micrometers, inhibiting the precise manipulation and control of excitons at the nanoscale level. Herein, we introduced the in-plane coherent surface plasmonic interference (SPI) field to excite and modulate excitons remotely. Compared to the out-of-plane light, a uniform in-plane SPI suggests a more compact spatial volume and an abundance of mode selections for a single or an array of device modulation. Our results not only build up a fundamental platform for operating and encoding the exciton states at the nanoscale level but also provide a new avenue toward all-optical integrated valleytronic chips for future quantum computation and information applications.

Lattice Resonances Excited by Finite-Width Light Beams

Periodic arrays of metallic nanostructures support collective lattice resonances, which give rise to optical responses that are, at the same time, stronger and more spectrally narrow than those of the localized plasmons of the individual nanostructures. Despite the extensive research effort devoted to investigating the optical properties of lattice resonances, the majority of theoretical studies have analyzed them under plane-wave excitation conditions. Such analysis not only constitutes an approximation to realistic experimental conditions, which require the use of finite-width light beams, but also misses a rich variety of interesting behaviors. Here, we provide a comprehensive study of the response of periodic arrays of metallic nanostructures when excited by finite-width light beams under both paraxial and nonparaxial conditions. We show how as the width of the light beam increases, the response of the array becomes more collective and converges to the plane-wave limit. Furthermore, we analyze the spatial extent of the lattice resonance and identify the optimum values of the light beam width to achieve the strongest optical responses. We also investigate the impact that the combination of finite-size effects in the array and the finite width of the light beam has on the response of the system. Our results provide a solid theoretical framework to understand the excitation of lattice resonances by finite-width light beams and uncover a set of behaviors that do not take place under plane-wave excitation.

Influence of particle size on the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein detection using IgG-capped gold nanoparticles and dynamic light scattering

Due to the unprecedented and ongoing nature of the coronavirus outbreak, the development of rapid immunoassays to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its highly contagious variants is an important and challenging task. Here, we report the development of polyclonal antibody-functionalized spherical gold nanoparticle biosensors as well as the influence of the nanoparticle sizes on the immunoassay response to detect the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein by dynamic light scattering. By monitoring the increment in the hydrodynamic diameter (ΔD_H) by dynamic light scattering measurements in the antigen-antibody interaction, SARS-CoV-2 S-protein can be detected in only 5 min. The larger the nanoparticles, the larger ΔD_H in the presence of spike protein. From adsorption isotherm, the calculated binding constant (K _D ) was 83 nM and the estimated limit of detection was 13 ng/mL (30 pM). The biosensor was stable up to 90 days at 4 °C. Therefore, the biosensor developed in this work could be potentially applied as a fast and sensible immunoassay to detect SARS-CoV-2 infection in patient samples.

A field-deployable diagnostic assay for the visual detection of misfolded prions

Diagnostic tools for the detection of protein-misfolding diseases (i.e., proteopathies) are limited. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) facilitate sensitive diagnostic techniques via visual color change for the identification of a variety of targets. In parallel, recently developed quaking-induced conversion (QuIC) assays leverage protein-amplification and fluorescent signaling for the accurate detection of misfolded proteins. Here, we combine AuNP and QuIC technologies for the visual detection of amplified misfolded prion proteins from tissues of wild white-tailed deer infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of cervids. Our newly developed assay, MN-QuIC, enables both naked-eye and light-absorbance measurements for detection of misfolded prions. MN-QuIC leverages basic laboratory equipment that is cost-effective and portable, thus facilitating real-time prion diagnostics across a variety of settings. In addition to laboratory-based tests, we deployed to a rural field-station in southeastern Minnesota and tested for CWD on site. We successfully demonstrated that MN-QuIC is functional in a non-traditional laboratory setting by performing a blinded analysis in the field and correctly identifying all CWD positive and CWD not-detected deer at the field site in 24 h, thus documenting the portability of the assay. White-tailed deer tissues used to validate MN-QuIC included medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes, parotid lymph nodes, and palatine tonsils. Importantly, all of the white-tailed deer (n = 63) were independently tested using ELISA, IHC, and/or RT-QuIC technologies and results secured with MN-QuIC were 95.7% and 100% consistent with these tests for positive and non-detected animals, respectively. We hypothesize that electrostatic forces help govern the AuNP/prion interactions and conclude that MN-QuIC has great potential for sensitive, field-deployable diagnostics for CWD, with future potential diagnostic applications for a variety of proteopathies.

Shape influence on the ultrafast plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles

The aim of shape-controlled colloidal synthesis of gold (Au) is to produce Au nanoparticles (NPs) with fine control of shapes, sizes, and dispersities. We show how transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) can be used to rapidly and accurately quantify the vast ensemble of shapes of Au NPs in solution within minutes, including the synthesized nanorods, decahedra, and nanospheres. Colloidal solutions containing Au NPs were measured in TAS and their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes were classified according to the shape, wavelength and number of peaks. Then their excited-state relaxation dynamics were used to ascertain their electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling time constant and frequency of optomechanical modes. TAS can quickly show that an Au nanosphere sample contains a tiny fraction of Au nanorods, whereas steady-state absorbance is totally blind to the presence of nanorods. Additionally, the TAS experiments indicate that the characteristic e-ph coupling time constants in Au nanorods depend on the NPs dimensions at high excitation intensity (> 6 µJ/cm²) which can help identify if there are any elongated Au NPs in Au spheres samples. Finally, optomechanical oscillations formed by NPs breathing modes were observed, providing information related to the average size and monodispersity of Au nanospheres and nanorods.

Coupling of plasmonic nanoparticles on a semiconductor substrate via a modified discrete dipole approximation method

Understanding the plasmonic coupling between a set of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) in a 2D array, and how a substrate affects such coupling, is fundamental for the development of optimized optoelectronic structures. Here, a simple semi-analytical procedure based on discrete dipole approximation (DDA) is reported to simulate the far-field and near-field properties of arrays of NPs, considering the coupling between particles, and the effect of the presence of a semiconductor substrate based on the image dipole approach. The method is validated for Ag NP dimers and single Ag NPs on a gallium nitride (GaN) substrate, a semiconductor widely used in optical devices, by comparison with the results obtained by the finite element method (FEM), indicating a good agreement in the weak coupling regime. Next, the method is applied to square and random arrays of Ag NPs on a GaN substrate. The increase in the surface density of NPs on a GaN substrate mainly results in a redshift of the dipolar resonance frequency and an increase in the near-field enhancement. This model, based on a single dipole approach, grants very low computational times, representing an advantage to predict the optical properties of large NP arrays on a semiconductor substrate for different applications.

Surfactant-Free Green Synthesis of Au@Chlorophyll Nanorods for NIR PDT-Elicited CDT in Bladder Cancer Therapy

The facile and straightforward fabrication of NIR-responsive theranostic materials with high biocompatibility is still an unmet need for nanomedicine applications. Here, we used a natural photosensitizer, iron chlorophyll (Chl/Fe), for the J-aggregate template-assisted synthesis of Au@Chl/Fe nanorods with high stability. The assembly of a high amount of Chl/Fe J-aggregate onto the Au surface enabled red-NIR fluorescence for monitoring and tracking residential tumor lesions. The Chl/Fe moieties condensed on the nanorods could change the redox balance by the photon induction of reactive oxygen species and attenuate iron-mediated lipid peroxidation by inducing a Fenton-like reaction. After conjugation with carboxyphenylboronic acid (CPBA) to target the glycoprotein receptor on T24 bladder cancer (BC) cells, the enhanced delivery of Au@Chl/Fe-CPBA nanorods could induce over 85% cell death at extremely low concentrations of 0.16 ppm_[Au] at 660 nm and 1.6 ppm_[Au] at 785 nm. High lipid peroxidation, as shown by BODIPY staining and GSH depletion, was observed when treated T24 cells were exposed to laser irradiation, suggesting that preliminary photodynamic therapy (PDT) can revitalize Fenton-like reaction-mediated chemodynamic ferroptosis in T24 cells. We also manipulated the localized administration of Au@Chl-Fe combined with PDT at restricted regions in orthotopic tumor-bearing mice to cure malignant BC successfully without recurrence. By intravesical instillation of the Au@Chl/Fe-CPBA nanorods, this localized treatment could prevent the material from entering the systemic circulation, thus minimizing systemic toxicity. Upon activating NIR-PDT-elicited chemodynamic therapy, ultrasound imaging revealed almost complete tumor remission. Anti-tumor efficacy and survival benefit were achieved with a green photosensitizer.

Influence of anisotropy on heterogeneous nucleation of gold nanorod assemblies

In this study, we analysed for the first time heterogeneous nucleation with anisotropic nanoparticles as a model system for non-spherical building units on the nanoscale. Gold nanorods were synthesised and assembled to investigate the phenomenon of heterogeneous nucleation. To determine the influence of the particle shape on heterogeneous nucleation, we utilised gold nanorods with varying aspect ratios, ranging from 3.00 and 2.25 to 1.75, while keeping the surface chemistry constant. First, the nucleation of the gold nanorod assemblies in solution and the process kinetics were analyzed with UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy followed by a microscopic examination of the gold nanorod-based superstructures formed heterogeneously on substrates. Here, positively charged cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-functionalized gold nanorods and negatively charged polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) functionalized substrates ensured the directed heterogeneous nucleation on the substrates. A combination of light microscopy with simultaneous UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy allowed us to observe the gold nanorod-based superstructure formation on the substrates in situ and to determine the nucleation rates of the process. We analysed the resulting data with the classical nucleation theory, which revealed a dominating kinetic term and a negligible thermodynamic term in contrast to ionic systems like calcium carbonate. Our studies consistently exhibit an influence of the aspect ratio on the nucleation behaviour resulting in faster nucleation of superstructures as the aspect ratio decreases. Hence our studies show unprecedented insight into the influence of particle anisotropy on the nucleation and growth of nanorod-based superstructures and reveal significant differences in the nucleation of nanoparticle building units compared to the nucleation of atoms or molecules as building units.

Importance of the Structural and Physicochemical Properties of Silica Nanoshells in the Photothermal Effect of Silica-Coated Au Nanoparticles Suspensions

In this work, monodisperse silica-coated gold nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and used for obtaining aqueous colloidal dispersions with an optimum relationship between colloidal stability and photothermal activity. The idea behind this design was to produce systems with the advantages of the presence of a silica shell (biocompatibility, potential for surface modification, and protecting effect) with a minimal loss of optical and thermal properties. With this aim, the photothermal properties of NPs with silica shells of different thicknesses were analyzed under conditions of high radiation extinction. By using amorphous, gel-like silica coatings, thicknesses higher than 40 nm could be obtained without an important loss of the light absorption capacity of the colloids and with a significant photothermal response even at low NP concentrations. The effects produced by changes in the solvent and in the NP concentration were also analyzed. The results show that the characteristics of the shell control both, the photothermal effect and the optical properties of the colloidal dispersions. As the presence of a silica shell strongly enhances the possibilities of adding cargo molecules or probes, these colloids can be considered of high interest for biomedical therapies, sensing applications, remote actuation, and other technological applications.

Enhancement of lateral Casimir force on a rotating particle near hyperbolic metamaterial

Enhancement of weak Casimir forces is extremely important for their practical detection and subsequent applications in variety of scientific and technological fields. We study the lateral Casimir forces acting on the rotating particles with small radius of 50 nm as well as that with large radius of 500 nm near the hyperbolic metamaterial made of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowires. It is found that the lateral Casimir force acting on the small particle of 50 nm near hyperbolic metamaterial with appropriate filling fraction can be enhanced nearly four times comparing with that acting on the same particle near SiC bulk in the previous study. Such enhancement is caused by the coupling between the resonance mode excited by nanoparticle and the hyperbolic mode supported by hyperbolic metamaterial. The results obtained in this study provide an efficient method to enhance the interaction of nanoscale objects.

A Parabola-like Gold Nanobowtie on a Sapphire Substrate as a Nano-Cavity

Plasmonic, metallic nanostructures have attracted much interest for their ability to manipulate light on a subwavelength scale and for their related applications in various fields. In this work, a parabola-like gold nanobowtie (PGNB) on a sapphire substrate was designed as a nano-cavity for confining light waves in a nanoscale gap region. The near-field optical properties of the innovative PGNB structure were studied comprehensively, taking advantage of the time-resolved field calculation based on a finite-difference time-domain algorithm (FDTD). The calculation result showed that the resonance wavelength of the nano-cavity was quite sensitive to the geometry of the PGNB. The values that related to the scattering and absorption properties of the PGNB, such as the scattering cross section, absorption cross section, extinction cross section, scattering ratio, and also the absorption ratio, were strongly dependent on the geometrical parameters which affected the surface area of the nanobowtie. Increased sharpness of the gold tips on the parabola-like nano-wings benefited the concentration of high-density charges with opposite electric properties in the narrow gold tips with limited volume, thus, resulting in a highly enhanced electric field in the nano-cavity under illumination of the light wave. Reduction of the gap size between the two gold nano-tips, namely, the size of the nano-cavity, decreased the distance that the electric potential produced by the highly concentrated charges on the surface of each gold nano-tip had to jump across, therefore, causing a significantly enhanced field in the nano-cavity. Further, alignment of the linearly polarized electric field of the incident light wave with the symmetric axis of the PGNB efficiently enabled the free electrons in the PGNB to concentrate on the surface of the sharp gold tips with a high density, thus, strongly improving the field across the nano-cavity. The research provides a new insight for future design, nanofabrication, and characterization of PGNBs for applications in devices that relate to enhancing photons emission, improving efficiency for energy harvesting, and improving sensitivity for infrared detection.
