Immobilization of isolated dimethyltin species on crystalline silicates through surface modification of layered octosilicate

Single metal atoms supported on silica are attractive catalysts, and precise control of the local environment around the metal species is essential. Crystalline silica is useful as an efficient support for the incorporation of well-defined metal sites. Dimethyltin species were regularly grafted onto the layer surfaces of layered octosilicate, a type of two-dimensional (2D) crystalline silica. Dimethyltin dichlorides react with the surface silanol (SiOH) groups of the silicate layers. The formation of Si-O-Sn bonds was confirmed by 29Si magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR. X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) analysis showed the four-coordinated Sn species. These results suggested the presence of well-defined dipodal dimethyltin species on the layer surfaces. The degree of modification of the silanol groups with the dimethyltin groups increased with increasing amounts of dimethyltin dichloride; however, the maximum degree of modification was approximately 50%. This value was interpreted as an alternate modification of the octosilicate reaction sites with dimethyltin groups. These results demonstrate the potential for developing highly active single metal catalysts with a high density of regularly arranged active sites on high surface area supports.

Interlayer Modification of a Layered Silicate RUB-18 with 4-Phosphonophenylsilane and Its Surface Acidic Functions

The interlayer silylation of a layered silicate H-RUB-18 (Si₄O₇(OH)₂) using a new aromatic silylating reagent containing a phosphonic acid group (4-phosphonophenylsilane: PPS) was demonstrated (H-PPS-RUB-18). The phosphonic acid groups were attached to the silicate layers through the reaction of H-RUB-18 with (4-diethoxyphosphorylphenyl)-triethoxysilane (p-PPS-E), and the ester moieties were subsequently hydrolyzed with hydrochloric acid. H-PPS-RUB-18 is a solid acid, as indicated by the intercalation of various alkylamines and the catalytic acetalization of ketones. A systematic increase in interlayer spacing leading to surface acidic properties was obtained through intercalation with a series of alkylamines. In addition, H-PPS-RUB-18 was exfoliated, resulting in single-layer nanosheets with ca. 2.0 nm thickness. The catalytic acetalization of ketones was related to the interlayer spacing of the modified RUB-18.

Advances in the Synthesis of Crystalline Metallosilicate Zeolites via Interlayer Expansion

Given the numerous industrial applications of zeolites as adsorbents, catalysts, and ion-exchangers, the development of new zeolite structures is highly desired to expand their practical applications. Currently, a general route to develop new zeolite structures is to use interlayer expansion agents to connect layered silicates. In this review, we briefly summarize the novel zeolite structures constructed from the lamellar precursor zeolites MWW, RUB-36, PREFER, Nu-6(1), COK-5, and PLS-1 via interlayer expansion. The contents of the summary contain detailed experiments, physicochemical characterizations, possible expansion mechanisms, and catalytic properties. In addition, the insertion of metal heteroatoms (such as Ti, Fe, Sn) into the layered zeolite precursor through interlayer expansion, which could be helpful to modify the catalytic function, is discussed.

Hydrolysis of Methoxylated Nickel Hydroxide Leading to Single-Layer Ni(OH)2 Nanosheets

Various methods for the preparation of inorganic nanosheets have been established and they have contributed to the substantial development of the research on diverse two-dimensional materials. Covalent surface modification of layered metal hydroxides with alkoxy groups is known to effectively weaken the interactions between layers, although the modified ligands are irreversibly immobilized. This study proposes the use of methanol as a removable surface modifier forming monodentate alkoxy bonds to prepare nickel hydroxide nanosheets through hydrolysis. Methoxylated layered nickel hydroxide, consisting of randomly stacked nano-sized nickel hydroxide sheets (10-20 nm in size) having Ni-OCH₃ groups on its surface, was synthesized in a powder form through the precipitation reaction of a nickel salt in methanol at room temperature. After dispersing the aggregated methoxylated nickel hydroxide in water, single-layer nickel hydroxide nanosheets with a thickness of 1.2 nm and a lateral size of 460 nm at maximum, which is larger than the size of original methoxylated nickel hydroxide were found in the suspension. The time-course experiments during hydrolysis suggested that two-dimensional crystal growth of exfoliated nickel hydroxide sheets proceeded, resulting in the formation of the nanosheets. Moreover, single-layer and nano-sized cobalt hydroxide was prepared through a similar manner. This work demonstrates that two-dimensional alkoxides consisting of polymeric M-O-M bonds are useful precursors for the design of metal-hydroxide-based nanomaterials.

Formation of silicate nanoscrolls through solvothermal treatment of layered octosilicate intercalated with organoammonium ions

We report silicate nanoscrolls composed of only SiO4 tetrahedra with crystalline walls for the first time in this study. The procedure consists of the intercalation of layered octosilicate with dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide ((C18)2DMABr) and the subsequent solvothermal treatment of the intercalated material in heptane. The walls of the obtained nanoscrolls are crystalline, which originates from layer crystallinity in the pristine silicate. The direction of rolling up is fixed at the a- or b-axis of the silicate based on the electron diffraction patterns of the nanoscrolls. Desorption of (C18)2DMABr, which is present in addition to (C18)2DMA cations, from the interlayer during solvothermal treatment is likely related to the nanoscrolling process. Although the yield of nanoscrolls is low, these findings will lead to the re-estimation of many layered silicates intercalated with long-chain alkylammonium compounds as precursors for silicate nanoscrolls with crystalline walls.

Synthesis of a Single-Crystalline Macroporous Layered Silicate from a Macroporous UTL-Type Zeolite and Its Accelerated Intercalation

A single-crystalline macroporous layered silicate was obtained for the first time. Firstly, UTL-type zeolite with macropores was prepared hydrothermally under the presence of acetylene black as a macropore template and the subsequent calcination to remove the template. Double four-membered ring (d4r) units in the UTL framework were selectively dissolved to yield a layered silicate with macropores. Intercalation of tetrabutylammonium ions into the macroporous layered silicate is accelerated if compared with that into the same silicate without macropores, indicating the effectiveness of macropores due to easy diffusion. The layered silicate with macropores was converted into PCR-type zeolite with macropores, a hierarchically micro- and macroporous material, through interlayer condensation.
