Abstract
Exploring new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminophores with high ECL efficiency and good stability in aqueous solution is in great demand for biological sensing. In this work, highly efficient aggregation-induced enhanced ECL of cyanophenyl-functionalized tetraphenylethene (tetra[4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenyl]ethene, TCPPE) and its application in biothiols analysis were reported. TCPPE contains four 4-cyanophenyl groups covalently attached to the tetraphenylethene (TPE) core, generating a nonplanar three-dimensional twisted conformation structure. TCPPE nanoparticles (NPs) with an average size of 15.84 nm were prepared by a precipitation method. High ECL efficiency (593%, CdS as standard) and stable ECL emission (over one month) were obtained for TCPPE NPs in aqueous solution. The unique properties of TCPPE NPs could be ascribed to the efficient suppression of nonradiative transition, the decrease of the energy gap, and the increase of anionic radical stability, which were proved by theoretical calculation and electrochemical and fluorescence methods. Contrasting aggregation-induced ECL chromic emission was first observed for TCPPE NPs. As a proof-of-methodology, an ECL method was developed for three biothiol assays with detection limits of 6, 7, and 300 nM for cysteine, homocysteine, and glutathione, respectively. This work demonstrates that TCPPE NPs are promising ECL luminophores, and the incorporation of appropriate substituents into luminophores can improve ECL efficiency and radical stability.

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is the light production triggered by reactions at the electrode surface. Its intrinsic features based on a dual electrochemical/photophysical nature have made it an attractive and powerful method across diverse fields in applied and fundamental research. Herein, we review the combination of ECL with semiconductor (SC) materials presenting various typical dimensions and structures, which has opened new uses of ECL and offered exciting opportunities for (bio)sensing and imaging. In particular, we highlight this particularly rich domain at the interface between photoelectrochemistry, SC material chemistry and analytical chemistry. After an introduction to the ECL and SC fundamentals, we gather the recent advances with representative examples of new strategies to generate ECL in original configurations. Indeed, bulk SC can be used as electrode materials with unusual ECL properties or light-addressable systems. At the nanoscale, the SC nanocrystals or quantum dots (QDs) constitute excellent bright ECL nano-emitters with tuneable emission wavelengths and remarkable stability. Finally, the challenges and future prospects are discussed for the design of new detection strategies in (bio)analytical chemistry, light-addressable systems, imaging or infrared devices.

Abstract
In this work, a nanosensor chemiluminescent (CL) probe for sensing glutathione (GSH) was developed, for the first time, based on its inhibition of the intrinsic peroxidase-mimetic effect of BSA@AuNCs. The endoperoxide linkage of artesunate could be hydrolyzed by BSA@AuNCs resulting in the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the consequent generation of strong CL emission. By virtue of the strong covalent interactions of -S⋯Au-, GSH could greatly suppress the peroxidase-mimetic effect of BSA@AuNCs, leading to a drastic CL quenching. The CL quenching efficiency increased proportionally to the logarithm of GSH concentration through the linearity range of 50.0-5000.0 nM with a limit of detection of 5.2 nM. This CL-based strategy for GSH tracing demonstrated the advantages of ultrasensitivity, high selectivity and simplicity. This strategy was successfully utilized to measure GSH levels in human serum with reasonable recovery results of 98.71%, 103.18%, and 101.68%, suggesting that this turn-off CL sensor is a promising candidate for GSH in biological and clinical samples.

Abstract
A new nanosensor for glutathione (GSH) detection by use of single nanoelectrodes has been developed through a dual-signaling ratiometric amplification strategy. Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) metalized DNA1 was modified on an Au nanoelectrode surface. Due to the strong affinity between Ag NP and GSH, Ag NPs could be removed by the addition of GSH. The remaining metalized DNA1 could hardly form a double strand, while the de-metalized DNA1 could hybrid with DNA2 and DNA3 to form a complex structure to adsorb methylene blue (MB), and then the electrochemical signal of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) from MB oxidation could be observed. With the addition of GSH, the peak current of MB oxidation at about -0.27 V (IMB) increases, while the signal of Ag oxidation at about 0.1 V (IAg) decreases. It was found that there had a linear relationship between the ratio of dual-signal (IMB/IAg) and the GSH concentrations, which could be used to detect GSH. The ratiometric nanosensor is label-free, easy to operate, and can eliminate inherent system errors. Considering the advantages of nanoelectrodes, such as low IR drop, fast response, and small overall dimension, this developed nanosensor can be used for GSH detection living systems (e.g., cell lysate).

Abstract
In this work, a novel yellow-emissive nanoprobe was for the first time developed for the fast detection of glutathione (GSH) based on nitrogen-doped carbon nanodots (N-CNDs) prepared via hydrothermal heating of o-Phenylenediamine. The N-CNDs and GSH could form non-fluorescent complex via static interaction, resulting in the fluorescence quenching of N-CNDs. Under optimal conditions, the N-CNDs served as a fluorescent nanoprobe for GSH sensing in a straightforward way with high selectivity and sensitivity. Two good linear responses were found for GSH detection in concentration ranges of 0.1-1.0 μM and 1.0-220.0 μM, respectively. The corresponding detection limits are as low as 0.059 μM and 5.54 μM, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed sensing system was successfully applied for GSH determination in vegetable and fruit samples with high accuracy. This work highlights the detection of GSH in a simple, fast, cost-effective, selective and ultrasensitive way, which paves a new way for other food quality monitoring.

Abstract
A highly selective and sensitive molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence (MIECL) sensor was developed based on the multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-enhanced molecularly imprinted quantum dots (MIP-QDs) for the rapid determination of cyfluthrin (CYF). The MIP-QDs fabricated by surface grafting technique exhibited excellent selective recognition to CYF, resulting in a specific decrease of ECL signal at the MWCNT/MIP-QD modified electrode. Under optimal conditions, the MIECL signal was proportional to the logarithm of the CYF concentration in the range of 0.2 µg/L to 1.0 × 103 µg/L with a determination coefficient of 0.9983. The detection limit of CYF was 0.05 µg/L, and good recoveries ranging from 86.0% to 98.6% were obtained in practical samples. The proposed MIECL sensor provides a novel, rapid, high sensitivity detection strategy for successfully analyzing CYF in fish and seawater samples.

Abstract
We use femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy to study ultrafast electron transfer (ET) dynamics in a model donor and acceptor system using CdSe/ZnS core/shell structure quantum dots (QDs) as donors and anthraquinone (AQ) molecules as acceptors. The ET rate can be enhanced by decreasing the number of chlorine substituents in the AQ molecules because that increases the driving force, which is the energy level offset between the conduction band energy of CdSe/ZnS and the lowest upper molecular orbital potential of AQ derivatives, as confirmed by cyclic voltammetry measurements. However, the electronic coupling between the QDs and AQ derivatives, and the sum of reorganization energy of AQ molecules and solvent calculated by density functional theory are not the main reasons for the change in ET rate in three systems. Our findings provide new insights into selecting an acceptor molecule and will be useful in tuning ET processes for advanced QD-based applications.

Abstract
The ratio of reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG ratio) is a greater first indication of disease risk than the total concentration of GSH. However, the interferences from thiolated biomolecules, especially cysteine (Cys), make the accurate detection of GSH/GSSG ratio a technical problem. In this work, we successfully used a mixture of quantum dots (QDs) and ZnAl-LDH nanosheets to fabricate a high electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ERET) efficiency sensor for GSH from the disturbances of amino acids, especially Cys and GSSG. The mechanisms of high ERET efficiency and selectivity were well investigated with spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculation. The results showed that the interaction force between ZnAl-LDH nanosheets and molecules proved a long-range-ordered space and selective transmission for molecules. On the basis of these interesting phenomena, we successfully measured the GSH/GSSG ratio in whole blood and serum samples.

Abstract
Exploring electrocatalytic reactions on the nanomaterial surface can give crucial information for the development of robust catalysts. Here, electrocatalytic reaction activity at single quantum dots (QDs) loaded silica microparticle involved in water oxidation is visualized using electrochemiluminescence (ECL) microscopy. Under positive potential, the active redox centers at QDs induce the generation of hydroperoxide surface intermediates as coreactants to remarkably enhance ECL emission from luminol derivative molecules for imaging. For the first time, in situ visualization of the catalytic activity of water oxidation with QDs catalyst was achieved, supported by a linear relation between ECL intensity and turn over frequency. A very slight diffusion trend attributed to only the luminol species proved in situ capture of hydroperoxide surface intermediates at catalytic active sites of QDs. This work provides tremendous potential in online imaging of electrocatalytic reactions and visual evaluation of catalyst performance.

Abstract
A dual potential electrochemiluminescence (ECL) enhancement of graphene quantum dots is achieved through chemical and electrochemical reactions of two different coreactants.
We for the first time propose a new concept where a greater enhancement in dual potential electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of a single graphene quantum dot (GQD) emitter can be achieved through the coupling between chemical and electrochemical reactions of two different coreactants of K2S2O8 and Na2SO3.

Abstract
This report outlines a highly sensitive and facile electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensing platform based on a novel high-quantum-yield Au-nanocluster (AuNC) probe for glutathione (GSH) detection. Owing to the prominent quenching effect of GSH on the ECL of the AuNCs, the proposed ECL nanosensor showed a wide response to GSH in the ranges of 1.0 × 10-9-1.0 × 10-5M and 1.0 × 10-5-1.0 × 10-1M and a low detection limit of 3.2 × 10-10M. In addition, the proposed system exhibited good selectivity for GSH in the presence of other chemical/biological interferences. Moreover, since no further functionalization of AuNC-based sensor interface was necessary, together with the stability, high sensitivity and selectivity of the proposed nanosensor, this convenient approach was able to successfully detect GSH in both of human urine samples and blood samples with excellent recoveries, which indicated its promising application under physiological conditions. Of significant importance is that this study not only helps in gaining a better understanding of the applicability of the ECL properties of AuNCs, but also provides a new avenue for the design and development of ECL sensors based on the novel high-quantum-yield AuNC-based probe and other functional-metal-based NC probes.

Abstract
A convenient, fluorescent dual-channel chemosensor on the basis of bis(3-pyridylmethyl)amine-functionalized carbon quantum dots (BPMA-CQDs) nanoprobe was constructed, and it can discriminatively detect glutathione from its analogues cysteine and homocysteine based on two distinctive strategies. Two distinct fluorescence responses of BPMA-CQDs probe to Cu(II) and Ag(I) were identified and further employed to achieve selective detection of Cu(II) and Ag(I) respectively. Based on the BPMA-CQDs/Cu(II) conjugate, discriminative detection of GSH was achieved in terms of correlation between the amounts of GSH and fluorescence recovery. The addition of GSH into BPMA-CQDs/Cu(II) system induces the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I), which could efficiently block PET process resulting in the following fluorescence recovery. Based on the BPMA-CQDs/Ag(I) conjugate, GSH assay could also be established on the basis of fluorescence response to GSH. The introduction of GSH into the preceding system triggers the competitive coordination to Ag(I) between BPMA and GSH, and silver ions are finally taken away by GSH from the probe, where the fluorescence is restored to its original weak state. Both of the detection strategies can achieve discriminative detection of GSH from Cys and Hcy. The assays showed good stability and repeatability, and covered a broad linear range of up to 13.3μM with a lowest detection limit of 42.0nM. Moreover, both of them were utilized to monitor GSH level in live cells.

Abstract
Glutathione (GSH) is a crucial antioxidant produced endogenously and plays key roles in biological systems. It is vitally important to design simple, selective, and sensitive methods to sense GSH and monitor changes of GSH concentration. In this work, the cathodic electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of lucigenin in the presence of MnO2 nanosheets at a glassy carbon electrode was utilized for GSH detection. GSH can reduce MnO2 nanosheets into Mn(2+) which can obviously inhibit the ECL of lucigenin. The ECL inhibition efficiencies increase linearly with the concentrations of glutathione in the range of 10 to 2000 nM. The detection limit for GSH measurement is 3.7 nM. This proposed method is highly sensitive, selective, simple, fast, and cost-effective. Moreover, this approach can detect GSH in human serum samples with excellent recoveries, which indicates its promising application under physiological conditions.

Abstract
In this work, an "on-off-on" switch system has been successfully applied through the construction of an electrochemiluminscent biosensor for copper ion (Cu(2+) ) detection based on a new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitter of supramolecular nanorods, which was achieved through supramolecular interactions between 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) and aniline. The initial "signal-on" state with strong and stable ECL emission was obtained by use of the supramolecular nanorods with a new signal amplification strategy involving a co-reaction accelerator. In addition, ECL quencher probes (Fc-NH2 /Cu-Sub/nano-Au) were fabricated by immobilizing aminoferrocene (Fc-NH2 ) on Cu-substrate strand modified Au nanoparticles. The quencher probes were hybridized with the immobilized Cu-enzyme strand to form Cu(2+) -specific DNAzyme. Similarly, the "signal-off" state was obtained by the high quenching effect of Fc-NH2 on the ECL of the excited-state PTCA ((1) PTCA*). As expected, the second "switch-on" state could achieved by incubating with the target Cu(2+) , owing to the Cu(2+) -specific DNAzyme, which was irreversibly cleaved, resulting in the release of the quencher probes from the sensor interface. Herein, on the basis of the ECL intensity changes (ΔIECL ) before and after incubating with the target Cu(2+) , the prepared Cu(2+) -specific DNAzyme-based biosensor was used for the determination of Cu(2+) concentrations with high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and good regeneration.

Abstract
We demonstrate that for quantum dot (QD) based electrochemiluminescence (ECL), the commonly used co-reactant does not perform as effectively as potassium persulfate. By exploiting this small change in co-reactant, ECL intensity can be enhanced dramatically in a cathodic-based ECL system. However, TPA remains the preferential co-reactant-based system for anodic ECL. This phenomenon can be rationalised through the relative energy-level profiles of the QD to the co-reactant in conjunction with the applied potential range. This work highlights the importance of understanding the co-reactant pathway for optimising the application of ECL to bioanalytical analysis, in particular for near-infrared (NIR) QDs which can be utilised for analysis in blood. Abstract
Direct detection of amphetamine type stimulants (ATSs) including methylamphetamine (MA) in street samples and biological matrices without the need for pretreatment or extraction is a great challenge for forensic drug analysis. Electrochemical techniques, such as electrochemiluminescence (ECL), are promising tools for this area of analysis. This contribution focuses on the electrochemical and photochemical properties of [Ru(bpy)3](2+) Nafion composite films and their subsequent use for the detection of ATS in particular MA. Under optimised conditions, the response linearly increased with the concentration over the concentration range 50pM≤[MA]≤1mM while an equivalent dynamic range was obtained for amphetamine with a correlation coefficient of 0.9903 and 0.9948 respectively. The ECL signal was monitored at ∼620nm, representing the λmax for the [Ru(bpy)3](2+) Nafion composite films. This wavelength is shifted by approximately 15nm compared to the photoexcited λmax for the same system. The modified films were formed by direct interaction with the electrode surface without the need for surface modification or chain linkers. This is a major advantage for the fabrication of any sensor as it reduces the synthesis times resulting in more economically and cheaper production costs. This technique is simple, rapid, selective and sensitive, and shows potential for the high-throughput quantitation of ATS as well as possibilities for adaptation with other techniques such as FIA or LC systems.

Abstract
Here we report a novel solid-state ECL sensor for ultrasensitive sensing of glutathione (GSH) based on ferrocyanide-ferricyanide redox couple (Fe(CN)6(3-/4-)) induced electrochemiluminescence (ECL) amplification of carbon dots (C-dots). The electropolymerization of C-dots and (11-pyrrolyl-1-yl-undecyl) triethylammonium tetrafluoroborate (A2) enabled immobilization of the hydrophilic C-dots on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) perfectly, while the excellent conductivity of polypyrrole was exploited to accelerate electron transfer between them. The Fe(CN)6(3-/4-) can expeditiously convert the C-dots and S2O8(2-) to C-dot(•-) and SO4(•-), respectively. High yields of the excited state C-dots (C-dots*) were obtained, and a ∼10-fold ECL amplification was realized. The C-dots* obtained through the recombination of electron-injected and hole-injected processes may be impeded due to the interference of GSH to K2S2O8. Therefore, the constructed sensor for GSH showed a detection limit down to 54.3 nM (S/N = 3) and a wide linear range from 0.1-1.0 μM with a correlation coefficient of 0.997.

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) uses redox reactions to generate light at an electrode surface, and is gaining increasing attention for biosensor development due to its high sensitivity and excellent signal-to-noise ratio. ECL studies of monodisperse oligofluorene–truxenes (T4 series) have been reported previously, showing the production of stable radical cations and radical anions, generating blue ECL. The compound in this study differs from the original structures, in that there are 2,1,3-benzothiadazole (BT) units inserted between the first and second fluorene units of the quarterfluorenyl arms. It was therefore anticipated that the incorporation of these highly luminescent and ECL-active compounds into sensor development would lead to significant decreases in detection limits. In this contribution, we report on the impact of incorporating these novel complexes into sensor devices on the ECL efficiency, as well as the ability of these to improve the detection sensitivity and decrease the limit of detection using the reagent-free detection of model analytes. The real world impact of these compounds is elucidated through the comparison with more standard ECL materials such as ruthenium-based compounds. The potential for multiple applications is to be examined within this contribution.
