Thallium and potentially toxic elements distribution in pine needles, tree rings and soils around a pyrite mine and indication for environmental pollution

In this study, the distributions of thallium (Tl), and other potential toxic elements, such as Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Sr, As, Cr, Ni, Zn, and Mn in needles, tree rings and soils of pine trees in one of the largest pyrite mining areas in the world, i.e., Yunfu, China were investigated. The results showed that pseudo-total Tl concentration of the tree rings ranged from 0.41 to 2.03 mg/kg (average: 1.12 mg/kg) during the year of 1998 to 2011. This indicates an overall obvious enrichment of Tl. Further investigation of element level variations in the pine needles showed a negative correlation between Tl content and the distance from the mining area. The results of Principal Component Analysis additionally demonstrated that Tl in the tree rings was most likely derived from the pine needles. Notably, Tl contents in the tree rings exhibited generally similar distribution pattern to the annual production intensity of Yunfu pyrite mining activities. The findings suggest that metal(loid)s in particular of Tl in pine tree rings can be used as alternative proxies to approximatively reconstruct the chronological change of atmospheric environmental pollution induced by pyrite associated mining/smelting activities.

Unravelling in-situ hardpan properties and functions in capping sulfidic Cu-Pb-Zn tailings and forming a duplex soil system cover

Developing alternative approaches to cap and rehabilitate the large areas of tailings landscapes is critical for sustainable development of mining industry. This study revealed the potential of an in-situ hardpan-based duplex soil system as an un-conventional approach to rehabilitate sulfidic Cu-Pb-Zn tailings. Under a shallow silicious soil cover, a massive and consistent hardpan horizon had been formed in-situ at the surface layer of tailings across the trial area, which physically separated root zones (i.e., silica soil cover) from the un-weathered tailings underneath, prevented capillary enrichment of acidity and soluble solutes into the root zones, and sustained native plant growth for more than a decade. Precipitation of Si-rich ferric complexes were attributed to the stabilisation/solidification of the sulfidic tailing. The hardpan layer possesses a highly compacted texture, a low-percolating pore network, and extreme resistance to water movement in the hardpan horizon. Further, the hardpans directly interfacing with plant roots in the soil cover were geochemically stabilised and attenuated, with very low levels of soluble metal(loid)s and a circumneutral pH condition. This case study would serve as a good incentive to develop bio-chemical engineering methodology building on current knowledge for achieving sustainable rehabilitation of sulfidic and metallic tailings in future.

Effects of mining activities on evolution of water chemistry in coal-bearing aquifers in karst region of Midwestern Guizhou, China: evidences from δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon and δ34S of sulfate

The generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) may accelerate watershed erosion and promote the migration of heavy metals, then threaten local ecosystems such as aquatic life and even human health. Previous studies have focused primarily on influence of AMD in surface environment. In order to reveal the acidizing processes in karst high-sulfur coalfield in Southwest China, this study, by contrast, focused on the hydrogeochemical evolution process and acidification mechanism of mine water in Zhijin coalfield, western Guizhou Province. The oxidation of pyrite and other sulfides induced strong acidification of mine water according to the water chemical analysis. As a result, a series of geochemical processes such as dissolution of carbonates and silicates, hydrolysis of metal ions, and degassing of CO₂ complicated water chemical evolution. The dissolution of silicates controlled the chemical composition of mine water, but more carbonates might be dissolved during the acidification of mine water. The sources of sulfate are quite different in water samples collected from the two selected mine. According to sulfur isotope analysis, the dissolution of gypsum is the primary source of sulfate in samples from Hongfa mine, whereas sulfide oxidation contributed a large amount of sulfate to the mine water in Fenghuangshan mine. The dissolution of carbonates should be an important source of DIC in mine water and CO₂ originating from organic mineralization might also have a certain contribution. This study elucidated the groundwater chemical evolution processes in high-sulfur coal-bearing strata and provided a foundation for further study of carbonates erosion and carbon emission during acidification of mine water.

Metal mobilization under alkaline conditions in ash-covered tailings

The aim of this study was to determine element mobilization and accumulation in mill tailings under alkaline conditions. The tailings were covered with 50 cm of fly ash, and above a sludge layer. The tailings were geochemically and mineralogically investigated. Sulfides, such as pyrrhotite, sphalerite and galena along with gangue minerals such as dolomite, calcite, micas, chlorite, epidote, Mn-pyroxene and rhodonite were identified in the unoxidized tailings. The dissolution of the fly ash layer resulted in a high pH (close to 12) in the underlying tailings. This, together with the presence of organic matter, increased the weathering of the tailings and mobilization of elements in the uppermost 47 cm of the tailings. All primary minerals were depleted, except quartz and feldspar which were covered by blurry secondary carbonates. Sulfide-associated elements such as Cd, Fe, Pb, S and Zn and silicate-associated elements such as Fe, Mg and Mn were released from the depletion zone and accumulated deeper down in the tailings where the pH decreased to circum-neutral. Sequential extraction suggests that Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, S and Zn were retained deeper down in the tailings and were mainly associated with the sulfide phase. Calcium, Cr, K and Ni released from the ash layer were accumulated in the uppermost depletion zone of the tailings.
