Abstract
Introducing kosmotropic salts enhances protein stability and reduces solubility by withdrawing water from the protein surface, leading to 'salting out', a phenomenon we have mimicked in supramolecular polymers (SPs). Under the guidance of Ag+, folic acid (FA) self-assembled in water through slipped-stacking and hydrophobic interactions into elongated, robust one-dimensional SPs, resulting in thermo-stable supergels. The SPs exhibited temperature and dilution tolerance, attributed to the stability of the FA-Ag+ complex and its hydrophobic stacking. Importantly, FA-Ag+ SP's stability has been augmented by the kosmotropic anions, such as SO42-, strengthening hydrophobic interactions in the SP, evident from the enhanced J-band, causing improvement of gel's mechanical property. Interestingly, higher kosmotrope concentrations caused a significant decrease in SP's solubility, leading to precipitation of the reinforced SPs─a 'salting out' effect. Conversely, chaotropes like ClO4- slightly destabilized hydrophobic stacking and promoted an extended conformation of individual SP chain with enhanced solubility, resembling a 'salting in' effect.

Abstract
Self-assembly of chromophoric systems is a prerequisite to create well-ordered, processable nanomaterials with multiple functionalities. In the past two decades, the field of functional organic materials has primarily focused on systems featuring only one type of dye/π-conjugated unit. Consequently, many reports with mechanistic insights on the self-assembly of the dyes featuring different molecular packing have been reported. Subsequently, we have witnessed several attempts to organize the multi-chromophoric systems in solution and solid-state via different approaches using self-assembly as a tool. Incorporation of more than one dye is important in creating materials with tuneable optoelectronic properties. Consequently, self-assembly of more than one chromophoric systems have been investigated to some extent. This review aims to discuss the self-assembled materials derived from discrete π-conjugated systems comprising more than one dye units connected through covalent bonding (multi-chromophoric systems). Molecular design of various multi-chromophoric systems leading to the formation of crystals, liquid crystals and supramolecular polymers have been correlated with corresponding properties. We envisage that classification of self-assembled multi-chromophoric systems, with a note on tuneable optoelectronic properties, can provide a deeper understanding on the molecular design strategies, which is important in the fabrication of functional organic materials with optimum performances.

Abstract
Gold (III) cyclometalated based amphiphiles in aqueous media have been revealed with excellent supramolecular transformations to external stimuli to open new pathways for soft functional material fabrications. Herein, we report a new chiral cyclometalated gold (III) amphiphile (GA) assembling into lamellar nanostructures in aqueous media confirmed with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Counterion exchange with D-, L-, or racemic-camphorsulfonates features the significant supramolecular helicity enhancements, enabling transformations of GA from lamellar structure to vesicles and to nanotubes with multi-equivalents of counterion. The limited cytotoxicity of GA in aqueous media exhibits good biocompatibility.

Abstract
Pt(II)-BODIPY complexes combine the chemotherapeutic activity of Pt(II) with the photocytotoxicity of BODIPYs. Additional conjugation with targeting ligands can boost the uptake by cancer cells that overexpress the corresponding receptors. We describe two Pt(II) triangles, 1 and 2, built with pyridyl BODIPYs functionalized with glucose (3) or triethylene glycol methyl ether (4), respectively. Both 1 and 2 showed higher singlet oxygen quantum yields than 3 and 4, due to the enhanced singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing. To evaluate the targeting effect of the glycosylated derivative, in vitro experiments were performed using glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1)-positive HT29 and A549 cancer cells, and noncancerous HEK293 cells as control. Both 1 and 2 showed higher cellular uptake than 3 and 4. Specifically, 1 was selective and highly cytotoxic toward HT29 and A549 cells. The synergistic chemo- and photodynamic behavior of the metallacycles was also confirmed. Notably, 1 exhibited superior efficacy toward the cisplatin-resistant R-HepG2 cells.

Abstract
Self-assembling polymers by bioinspired directional supramolecular interactions currently hold great scientific and technological interests. Herein, we report an unorthodox strategy based on a dipole-dipole interaction-mediated extended antiparallel dipolar assembly of a model merocyanine (MC) dye for maneuvering the self-assembly of a highly water-soluble MC-functionalized block copolymer (P2). Unlike traditional amphiphilic block copolymers featuring distinct hydrophobic segments (flexible aliphatic hydrocarbon chains or rigid nonpolar aromatic scaffolds), P2 comprises polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (PEG) as a hydrophilic block and an unconventional structure-directing acrylate block functionalized with polar MC-dyes in the side chains of every repeat unit. In the absence of any additional hydrophobic assistance, P2 spontaneously self-assembles in water through the continuous opposite alignment of its pendant MCs by multiple dipole-dipole interactions to cancel out their ground state dipole moments, which initially generates an H-aggregated species with ill-defined morphology (Aggregate 1). Upon thermal annealing, Aggregate 1 reorganizes into higher-order core-shell nanodisc-like structures (Aggregate 2) driven by the orthogonal π-stacking interactions of the rigid aromatic framework derived from the extended cofacial MC-stacks. The aromatic interiors of the nanodiscs gain colloidal stability from the externally decorated hydrophilic PEG chains. While the initially formed Aggregate 1, predominantly by dipole-dipole interactions, showed remarkable thermal stability due to the cooperative effect of the polymer chain, the hierarchical assembly guided by relatively weaker dispersion forces of the MC-stacked π-surfaces could be tailored by dilution or thermal treatment. Such organized packing of pendant MCs by the dual effect of dipole-dipole interactions and π-stacking conferred several exciting properties to the P2 assembly in water. Long-range ordered antiparallel stacking of the pendant MCs rendered outstanding aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) properties to the resultant nanostructures in water with increased fluorescence lifetime, quantum yield, and Stokes shift compared to nonaggregating P2 in CHCl3. The remarkable thermal and kinetic stability of the nanodiscs, their guest loading ability, and very low critical aggregation concentration (CAC) were demonstrated by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) studies with an encapsulated donor-acceptor dye pair.

Abstract
Supra-amphiphiles constituted of noncovalent bonds have emerged as attractive systems for fabrication of stimuli-responsive self-assembled nanostructures. A unique supramolecular strategy utilizing halogen (X)-bonding interaction has been demonstrated for constructing emissive supra-π-amphiphiles in water from a hydrophobic pyridyl functionalized naphthalene monoimide (NMI-Py) based X-bond acceptor and hydrophilic iodotetrafluorophenyl functionalized polyethylene glycol (PEG-I) or triethylene glycol (TEG-I) based X-bond donors, while their luminescent higher ordered assemblies were governed by orthogonal dipole-dipole interaction and π-stacking of the NMI-Py fluorophore as probed by SCXRD and DFT calculations. Control molecules lacking iodotetrafluorophenyl moiety at the polyethylene glycol chain end failed to create any defined morphology from the NMI-Py, suggesting X-bonding is prerequisite for the nanostructure formation. Variation in the chain length of the X-bond donors leads to different morphologies (fiber vs vesicle) for PEG-I and TEG-I. Acid triggered denaturing of the X-bonds caused pH responsive disassembly of the thermally robust nanostructures. This strategy paves the way for facile fabrication of structurally diverse smart and adaptive luminescent functional materials with tunable morphology.

Abstract
Smart light-responsive supramolecular materials have been extensively investigated in the past decade, but so far the impact of metal coordination on hierarchical supramolecular structures of light-responsive building blocks has remained nearly unexplored. Herein, we unravel the hierarchical self-assembly of a small π-conjugated azo-containing pyridyl ligand that is able to respond to UV-light and metal complexation. The ligand self-assembles in an antiparallel fashion into long twisted fibers, which are then disassembled upon photoisomerization of the azobenzene groups, resulting in shorter rigid rods with a different packing motif. Complexation of Pd(ii) ions enhances the cooperativity of the aggregation and induces a molecular rearrangement into slipped stacks with subsequent formation of long thin fibers. These are then transformed into thinner, shorter rods upon light irradiation. The observed different light-responsiveness, besides clearing up the influence of metal coordination and light irradiation in self-assembly processes, paves the way towards the design of novel supramolecular photochromic systems.

Abstract
Two novel supramolecular metallo-heteropolymers bearing a photo-isomerizable telechelic bis-terpyridine ligand and either Fe(ii) or Co(ii) coordination metal were synthesized. Both polymers induced gelation of organic solvents at a concentration as low as 0.12 wt% yielding thixotropic gels. Judicious choice of the electronic and photophysical properties of both ditopic ligand and metal ion enabled to achieve control over photomechanical response in supramolecular organogels upon UV light irradiation through molecular design.

Abstract
Amphiphilic diarylethenes bearing octyloxycarbonyl and N-octylcarbamoyl groups have been designed and synthesized. These ester- and amide-linked compounds form micrometer-sized supramolecular assemblies in water, and these assemblies exhibit photoinduced macroscopic morphological transformations upon alternate irradiation with UV and visible light. The ester-linked diarylethene showed a transformation between colorless spheres and a red-purple hazy fringe, whereas the microspheres of the amide-linked diarylethene showed changes in color, size, and shape, but the spheres did not show division. TEM images revealed that the spheres of the open-ring isomers have coacervate structures, with bicontinuous aqueous and organic phases. The closed-ring isomers of the ester- and amide-linked compounds were found to form nanofibers and thin layers, respectively. These compounds showed absorption spectral shifts at temperatures corresponding to the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) transition. This morphological transformation can be rationalized as the photoinduced phase transition between the high- and low-temperature phases of the LCST transition. These results open up a new avenue for the design of phototransformative supramolecular assemblies based on a combination of photochromism and LCST behavior.

Abstract
Processing of substrates with different solvent compatibility is a persistent problem in homogeneous catalysis, in particular when one starting compound is water soluble and the other is not. A promising concept reported in the literature is micellar catalysis. However, the process of developing catalysts that are surfactants at the same time is still in its early stages. We report the synthesis of a new surfactant system with an N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) moiety as a head group. Characteristic surfactant properties such as the formation of micelles or liquid crystals is documented. The new surfactant ligand forms coordination compounds with various metals, most importantly Pd2+, in square planar geometry. In addition, the Pd‐NHC compound shows surfactant features, and can be used successfully for C−C cross‐coupling reactions (Suzuki, Heck). The boost in catalytic activity by one order of magnitude compared to analogous but non‐amphiphilic species is reported.

Abstract
A donor-acceptor-structured diruthenium complex, 1(PF6)4, that contains an electron-deficient bridging ligand and electron-rich distal diarylamines modified with long aliphatic chains has been synthesized. By varying the solvent environments and assembly conditions, we obtained three different self-assembled nanostructures of 1(PF6)4, including zero-dimensional nanospheres, one-dimensional nanofibers, and thin films with interconnected nanowire networks. These structures were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. Conductive AFM analysis shows that the nanowire networks exhibit a high conductivity of 0.023 S/cm and an enhanced photoconductivity of 0.59 S/cm under visible light irradiation.

Abstract
The nature of intermolecular interactions governing supramolecular polymerizations is very important for controlling their cooperativity. In order to address this problem, supramolecular columns made of PtII and PdII complexes of oligo(phenylene ethynylene)-based pyridine (OPE) and tetrazolylpyridine ligands (TEP) were investigated through the dispersion-corrected PM6 method. Aromatic, CH-π, M-Cl and metallophilic interactions helped stabilize the supramolecules studied, and their geometries and associated cooperativities were in excellent agreement with experimental data. The OPE ligand and/or the presence of PtII led to stronger metallophilic interactions and also to cooperative supramolecular polymerizations, which clearly suggests that metallophilic interactions are a key factor for controlling cooperativity. The results indicate that sequential monomer addition is in general less spontaneous than the combination of two larger preformed stacks. The present theoretical investigations contribute to the further understanding of the relation between the thermodynamics of supramolecular polymerizations and the nature of different synthons.

Abstract
A series of amphiphilic metallopolymers is described that features zinc(II) bis-terpyridine coordination nodes as well as a backbone with hydrophobic azoaryl moieties and hydrophilic phenylene-ethynylene units decorated with PEG brushes. Using such metallopolymers at very low concentration, stable, photo-responsive and self-healing hydrogels are obtained. UV irradiation of the gel allows modulation of the degree of hydrophobic π-π interactions between photoisomerizable azoaryl units and a polarity switch that overall induces a fast gel-to-sol transition. Finally, the material phase can be readily and fully restored to the thermodynamically stable state either thermally or photochemically by using visible light. The presented strategy can be further generalized towards modular supramolecular metallopolymers for injectable gels in drug delivery and bio-engineering applications.

Self-assembly of alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine amphiphiles into nanostructures via steric control and metal-metal interactions. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2016; 113:2845-50. Abstract
A series of mono- and dinuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complexes containing the hydrophilic oligo(para-phenylene ethynylene) with two 3,6,9-trioxadec-1-yloxy chains was designed and synthesized. The mononuclear alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complex was found to display a very strong tendency toward the formation of supramolecular structures. Interestingly, additional end-capping with another platinum(II) terpyridine moiety of various steric bulk at the terminal alkyne would lead to the formation of nanotubes or helical ribbons. These desirable nanostructures were found to be governed by the steric bulk on the platinum(II) terpyridine moieties, which modulates the directional metal-metal interactions and controls the formation of nanotubes or helical ribbons. Detailed analysis of temperature-dependent UV-visible absorption spectra of the nanostructured tubular aggregates also provided insights into the assembly mechanism and showed the role of metal-metal interactions in the cooperative supramolecular polymerization of the amphiphilic platinum(II) complexes.

Abstract
Cooperative phenomena are common processes involved in the hierarchical self-assembly of multiple systems in nature, such as the tobacco mosaic virus and a cell's cytoskeleton. Motivated by the high degree of order exhibited by these systems, a great deal of effort has been devoted in the past two decades to design hierarchical supramolecular polymers by combining different classes of cooperative interactions. In this review, we have classified the field of supramolecular polymers depending on the cooperative non-covalent forces driving their formation, with particular emphasis on recent examples from literature. We believe that this overview would help scientists in the field to design novel self-assembled systems with improved complexity and functionalities.

A nitronyl nitroxide (NN)-appended hexabenzocoronene (HBC(NN)), when allowed to coassemble with bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)cobalt(II), forms a coaxial nanotubular architecture featuring NN-Co(II) coordinated copolymer chains immobilised on the outer and inner nanotube surfaces. Upon lowering the temperature, this nanotube has enhanced magnetic susceptibility below 10 K.

Abstract
Self-assembled microstructures of an amphiphilic diarylethene featuring an alkyl chain and triethylene glycol groups showed a photoinduced reversible morphological change in water. Reversible photoisomerization of the core diarylethene gave rise to a reversible morphological transformation between colorless microspheres and colored fibers. When colorless microspheres were irradiated with UV light, colored fibers were formed, and when the colored fibers were irradiated with visible light, the spheres were restored to their original positions where the spheres originally existed. This system showed reversible morphological change through not only photoirradiation but also temperature change. These behaviors can be interpreted as a phase transition between the sphere and fiber states. The dynamic process of the phase transition was monitored by polarized optical microscopy (POM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was revealed that the formation of fibers upon UV irradiation occurred radially at the surface of the sphere and the formation of the spheres upon visible-light irradiation occurred at the middle of the fiber. The unique photoinduced mechanical motion provides useful information for the design of sophisticated photoactuators.

Abstract
Oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-decorated supramolecular assemblies are distinguished by their neutral character and macroscopic temperature-sensitive phase transition behavior. OEG functionalization is an emerging strategy to obtain thermoresponsive macrocyclic amphiphiles, although known methods organize the hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments by covalent bonding. Coordination-driven self-assembly offers an alternative route for organizing OEG-functionalized precursors into nanoscopic architectures, resulting in well-defined metallacycle cores surrounded by hydrophilic scaffolds to impart overall amphiphilic character. Here a tri(ethylene glycol)-functionalized thermosensitive amphiphilic metallacycle was prepared with high efficiency by means of the directional-bonding approach. The ensembles thus formed showed good lower critical solution temperature behavior with a highly sensitive phase separation and excellent reversibility. Moreover, the clouding point decreased with increasing metallacycle concentration and addition of K(+).

Abstract
Building on established supramolecular chemistry, metal coordination and organometallic chemistry have been widely explored for supramolecular polymers and nanostructures. Increasingly, research has demonstrated that this approach is promising for the synthesis of novel materials with functions and properties derived from metal elements and their coordination structures. Unique self-assembling behaviour and unexpected supramolecular structures are frequently discovered due to multiple non-covalent interactions in addition to metal coordination. However, an explicit understanding of the synergistic effects of non-covalent interactions for designed synthesis of metal containing assemblies with structure correlated properties remains a challenge to be addressed. Recent literature in the area is highlighted in this review in order to illustrate newly explored concepts and stress the importance of developing well understood and controlled supramolecular chemistry for designed synthesis.

Abstract
Dye aggregates are becoming increasingly attractive for diverse applications, in particular as organic electronic and sensor materials. However, the growth processes of such aggregates from molecular to small assemblies up to nanostructures is still not properly understood, limiting the design of materials' functional properties. Here we elucidate the supramolecular growth process for an outstanding class of functional dyes, perylene bisimides (PBIs), by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our studies reveal a sequential growth of amphiphilic PBI dyes from nanorods into nanoribbons in water by fusion and fission processes. More intriguingly, the fluorescence observed for higher hierarchical order nanoribbons was enhanced relative to that of nanorods. Our results provide insight into the relationship between molecular, morphological, and functional properties of self-assembled organic materials.
