Hybrid organic PVDF-inorganic M-rGO-TiO2 (M = Ag, Pt) nanocomposites for multifunctional volatile organic compound sensing and photocatalytic degradation-H2 production

Which Is More Efficient in Promoting the Photocatalytic H2 Evolution Performance of g-C3N4: Monometallic Nanocrystal, Heterostructural Nanocrystal, or Bimetallic Nanocrystal?

Generally, an excellent cocatalyst could promote the photocatalytic hydrogen (H₂) evolution performance of g-C₃N₄ significantly. Herein, a superior cocatalyst of gold-platinum (AuPt) nanocrystal with an ultralow content of Pt was successfully decorated on carbon self-doping g-C₃N₄ nanosheets (AuPt/CCN) via a facile photodeposition route. The corresponding Pt/CCN, Au/CCN, Au/Pt/CCN, and Pt/Au/CCN were also prepared for comparison. It is found that AuPt/CCN exhibits much superior photocatalytic H₂ evolution performance (1135 μmol/h) when irradiated with a 300 W Xe lamp, up to 20, 12, 5, 2, and 1.5 times that of the pristine CCN, Pt/CCN, Au/CCN, Au/Pt/CCN, and Pt/Au/CCN, respectively. The quantum efficiency (QE) of AuPt/CCN at 420 nm reaches 12.5%. The experimental and density functional theory calculation results suggested that the improved AuPt performance can be mainly ascribed to the non-plasmon-related synergistic effect of Au and Pt atoms in AuPt nanocrystal: (1) the proximity and the electronegativity difference of Au and Pt atoms in AuPt accelerate the transfer and separation of charge carriers and (2) the synergistic interaction between Pt and Au atoms optimizes the Gibbs free energy (ΔG_H*) of H* (atom) adsorption on AuPt, promoting the H₂ generation kinetics of AuPt/CCN.

Mechanism of a Self-Assembling Smart and Electrically Responsive PVDF-Graphene Membrane for Controlled Gas Separation

The development of science and technology is accompanied by a complex composition of multiple pollutants. Conventional passive separation processes are not sufficient for current industrial applications. The advent of active or responsive separation methods has become highly essential for future applications. In this work, we demonstrate the preparation of a smart electrically responsive membrane, a poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)-graphene composite membrane. The high graphene content induces the self-assembly of PVDF with a high β-phase content, which displays a unique self-piezoelectric property. Additionally, the membrane exhibits excellent electrical conductivity and unique capacitive properties, and the resultant nanochannels in the membrane can be reversibly adjusted by external voltage applications, resulting in the tailored gas selectivity of a single membrane. After the application of voltage to the membrane, the permeability and selectivity toward carbon dioxide increase simultaneously. Moreover, atomic-level positron annihilation spectroscopic studies reveal the piezoelectric effect on the free volume of the membrane, which helps us to formulate a gas permeation mechanism for the electrically responsive membrane. Overall, the novel active membrane separation process proposed in this work opens new avenues for the development of a new generation of responsive membranes.

Multicaloric effect in a multiferroic composite of Gd5(Si,Ge)4 microparticles embedded into a ferroelectric PVDF matrix

The coupling between electric, magnetic and elastic features in multiferroic materials is an emerging field in materials science, with important applications on alternative solid-state cooling technologies, energy harvesting and sensors/actuators. Using a simple solvent casting technique, the formation and stabilization of PVDF electroactive phases are improved when the filler content increases from 2 to 12 weight fraction (wt.%). This effect greatly contributes to the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling, with the ME coefficient \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$${\alpha }_{ME}$$\end{document}αME increasing from 0.3 V/cm.Oe to 2.2 V/cm.Oe, by increasing the amount of magnetic material. In addition, magnetic measurements revealed that the ME-coupling has influenced the magnetocaloric effect via a contribution from the electroactive polymer and hence leading to a multicaloric effect. These results contribute to the development of multifunctional systems for novel technologies.

Electrochemical Fabrication of rGO-embedded Ag-TiO2 Nanoring/Nanotube Arrays for Plasmonic Solar Water Splitting

Effective utilization of hot electrons generated from the decay of surface plasmon resonance in metal nanoparticles is conductive to improve solar water splitting efficiency. Herein, Ag nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) co-decorated hierarchical TiO2 nanoring/nanotube arrays (TiO2 R/T) were facilely fabricated by using two-step electrochemical anodization, electrodeposition, and photoreduction methods. Comparative studies were conducted to elucidate the effects of rGO and Ag on the morphology, photoresponse, charge transfer, and photoelectric properties of TiO2. Firstly, scanning electron microscope images confirm that the Ag nanoparticles adhered on TiO2 R/T and TiO2 R/T-rGO have similar diameter of 20 nm except for TiO2 R-rGO/T. Then, the UV-Vis DRS and scatter spectra reveal that the optical property of the Ag-TiO2 R/T-rGO ternary composite is enhanced, ascribing to the visible light absorption of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles and the weakening effect of rGO on light scattering. Meanwhile, intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectra demonstrate that rGO can promote the hot electrons transfer from Ag nanoparticles to Ti substrate, reducing the photogenerated electron-hole recombination. Finally, Ag-TiO2 R/T-rGO photoanode exhibits high photocurrent density (0.98 mA cm-2) and photovoltage (0.90 V), and the stable H2 evolution rate of 413 μL h-1 cm-2 within 1.5 h under AM 1.5 which exceeds by 1.30 times than that of pristine TiO2 R/T. In line with the above results, this work provides a reliable route synergizing rGO with plasmonic metal nanoparticles for photocatalysis, in which, rGO presents a broad absorption spectrum and effective photogenerated electrons transfer.

The Influence of Materials, Heterostructure, and Orientation for Nanohybrids on Photocatalytic Activity

In this work, different structures based on electrodeposited n-type ZnO nanorods and p-type Cu₂O, CuSCN, and NiO nanostructures are fabricated for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). The influence of materials, heterostructure, and orientation for nanohybrids on photocatalytic activity is discussed for the first time. The heterojunction structures show remarkable enhancement compared to the bare semiconductor. The morphology of nanostructure has mainly an influence on the photocatalytic activity. NiO has the highest catalytic activity among the four pristine semiconductor nanostructures of ZnO, Cu₂O, CuSCN, and NiO. The greatest enhancement of the photocatalytic activity is obtained using a ZnO/NiO (1 min) heterostructure attributed to the heterojunction structure and extremely higher specific surface area, which can degrade MO (20 mg/L) into colorless within 20 min with the fastest photocatalytic speed among homogeneous heterojunction structures. Meanwhile, the methodology and data analysis described herein will serve as an effective approach for the design of hybrid nanostructures for solar energy application, and the appropriate nanohybrids will have significant potential to solve the environment and energy issues.

Bimetallic PtAu Alloy Nanoparticles-Integrated g-C3N4 Hybrid as an Efficient Photocatalyst for Water-to-Hydrogen Conversion

Herein, we report the synthesis of metal (Pt and Au) and metal alloy (PtAu) nanoparticles (NPs)-integrated graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) hybrids using a facile solvothermal route for water-splitting application. The metal and metal alloy NPs with varying percentages of Pt and Au are found to be in the size range of 3-5 nm and uniformly distributed on the g-C₃N₄ sheets. The metal and metal alloy NPs act as cocatalyst for g-C₃N₄ to enhance the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen (H₂) generation through higher light absorption and efficient charge separation. The alloy composition plays an important role to maximize the photoactivity, with an optimized PtAu/g-C₃N₄ sample delivered 1009 μmol g^-1 h^-1 of H₂. The visible light assisted photocatalytic H₂ evolution is further investigated with the optimized PtAu alloy NPs-integrated g-C₃N₄. This study presents a robust, stable, and easily synthesizable PtAu/g-C₃N₄ hybrid material as a promising photocatalyst for H₂ generation through water splitting.

An integrated experimental and theoretical study on the optical properties of uniform hairy noble metal nanoparticles

We report a viable route to plasmonic nanoparticles with well-controlled sizes, shapes, and compositions. A series of monodisperse Ag and Au nanoparticles capped with polystyrene chains (i.e., "hairy" nanoparticles) are crafted by capitalizing on star-like diblock copolymers as nanoreactors. Such monodisperse nanoparticles render an accurate absorption spectrum, providing a strong basis for theoretical investigation into their optical properties. By combining the experimental study with the three-dimensional finite element calculation of electromagnetic field distributions, the contributions of both intra-band and inter-band transitions to plasmonic absorption are revealed. The calculated absorption spectra perfectly reproduce the experimental observations, including the peak positions, shapes, and trends of peak shifting or broadening as a function of nanoparticle sizes. The influences of nanoparticle dimensions and surface ligands on plasmonic absorption of metallic nanoparticles are also systematically explored.

Novel inorganic perovskite quantum dots for photocatalysis

Herein, we report the performance of CsPbX₃ (X = Cl, Br, and I) perovskite quantum dots (QDs) for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes. The photocatalytic performance of CsPbX₃ QDs was characterized by UV-vis absorption spectra and ESI-MS, which evaluated their ability of degrading methyl orange (MO) solution under visible light irradiation. Interestingly, both CsPbCl₃ and CsPbBr₃ QDs show excellent photocatalytic activities, which can decompose the MO solution into a colorless solution within 100 min. This study demonstrates the potential of CsPbX₃ QDs in the degradation of organic dyes and environmentally friendly applications. Moreover, the integration of CsPbX₃ QDs and photocatalysis provides a new insight for the design of new photocatalysts.

Design of a Metal Oxide-Organic Framework (MoOF) Foam Microreactor: Solar-Induced Direct Pollutant Degradation and Hydrogen Generation

A macroporous carbon network combined with mesoporous catalyst immobilization by a template method gives a metal-oxide-organic framework (MoOF) foam microreactor that readily soaks up pollutants and localizes solar energy in itself, leading to effective degradation of water pollutants (e.g., methyl orange (MO) and also hydrogen generation. The cleaned-up water can be removed from the microreactor simply by compression, and the microreactor used repeatedly.

An electrochemical aptasensor based on a TiO2/three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide/PPy nanocomposite for the sensitive detection of lysozyme

A sensitive aptasensor based on a nanocomposite of hollow titanium dioxide nanoball, three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide, and polypyrrole (TiO2/3D-rGO/PPy) was developed for lysozyme detection. A lysozyme aptamer was easily immobilized onto the TiO2/3D-rGO/PPy nanocomposite matrix by assembling the aptamer onto graphene through simple π-stacking interactions and electrostatic interactions between PPy molecular chains and aptamer strands. In the presence of lysozyme, the aptamer on the adsorbent layer catches the target on the electrode interface, which generates a barrier for electrons and inhibits electron transfer, subsequently resulting in decreased electrochemically differential pulse voltammetric signals of a gold electrode modified with TiO2/3D-rGO/PPy. Using this strategy, a low limit of detection of 0.085 ng mL(-1) (5.5 pM) for detecting lysozyme was observed within the detection range of 0.1-50 ng mL(-1) (0.007-3.5 nM). The aptasensor also presents high specificity for lysozyme, which is unaffected by the coexistence of other proteins. Such an aptasensor opens a rapid, selective, and sensitive route to lysozyme detection. This finding indicates that the TiO2/3D-rGO/PPy nanocomposite could be used as an electrochemical biosensor for detecting proteins in the biomedical field.

Hierarchical Assembly of SnO2/ZnO Nanostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

SnO₂/ZnO hierarchical heterostructures have been successfully synthesized by combining electrospinning technique and hydrothermal method. Various morphologies of the secondary ZnO nanostructures including nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs) can be tailored by adding surfactants. Photocatalytic performance of the heterostructures was investigated and obvious enhancement was demonstrated in degradation of the organic pollutant, compared to the primary SnO₂-based nanofibers (NFs) and bare ZnO. Furthermore, it was found that the H₂ evolution from water splitting was achieved by photocatalysis of heterostructured nanocomposites after sulfurization treatment. This synthetic methodology described herein promises to be an effective approach for fabricating variety of nanostructures for enhanced catalytic applications. The heterostructured nanomaterials have considerable potential to address the environmental and energy issues via degradation of pollutant and generation of clean H₂ fuel.

TiO2 Fibers Supported β-FeOOH Nanostructures as Efficient Visible Light Photocatalyst and Room Temperature Sensor

Hierarchical heterostructures of beta-iron oxyhydroxide (β-FeOOH) nanostructures on electrospun TiO₂ nanofibers were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. This synthesis method proves to be versatile to tailoring of β-FeOOH structural design that cuts across zero-dimensional particles (TF-P), one-dimensional needles (TF-N) to two-dimensional flakes (TF-F). In addition, synthesizing such oxyhyroxide nanostructures presents the advantage of exhibiting similar functional performances to its oxides counterpart however, without the need to undergo any annealing step which leads to undesirable structural collapse or sintering. The as-prepared hierarchical heterostructures possess high surface area for dye adsorptivity, efficient charge separation and visible photocatalytic activity. Also, for the first time, hydrogen gas sensing has been demonstrated on β-FeOOH nanostructures at room temperature. The reported hierarchical heterostructures of β-FeOOH on TiO₂ nanofibers afford multiple functions of photocatalysis and sensing which are highly promising for environment monitoring and clean up applications.

Bio-inspired artificial functional photocatalyst: biomimetic enzyme-like TiO2/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite with excellent molecular recognition ability

An enzyme-like TiO(2)/reduced graphene oxide (enzyme-TiO(2)/rGO) nanocomposite with molecular recognition ability was fabricated by biomimicking the geometrical and chemical complementation of the enzyme and substrate. The anatase TiO(2) nanocrystals were densely dispersed on rGO nanosheets with close interfacial contacts. With geometrical and chemical matching of target molecules and memorized cavities, the adsorption capacity of enzyme-TiO(2)/rGO nanocomposites for 4-nitrophenol (4.71 mg g(-1)) is about six times that of control TiO(2)/rGO without the enzyme-like feature (0.79 mg g(-1)), and the enzyme-TiO(2)/rGO shows a relative selectivity coefficient of 7.24. Moreover, enzyme-TiO(2)/rGO exhibits molecular recognitive photocatalytic degradation for a particular contaminant. The results demonstrate that enzyme-substrate recognition provides a convenient and powerful basis on which to biomimic and construct efficient photocatalysts with high selectivity.

Enhanced photocatalytic H₂ generation on cadmium sulfide nanorods with cobalt hydroxide as cocatalyst and insights into their photogenerated charge transfer properties

Cobalt hydroxide/cadmium sulfide composite was prepared using an easy coprecipitation strategy. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that Co(OH)2 nanometer particles were modified on CdS. Even without noble-metal cocatalyst, the photocatalytic H2 evolution over CdS after Co(OH)2 loaded was evidently increased. The most excellent Co(OH)2 of 6.8 mol %, resulted in a H2 generation rate of 61 μmol h(-1) g(-1), which exceeded that of pure CdS by a factor of 41 times. Surface photovoltage (SPV) and surface photocurrent (SPC) investigations revealed that the photogenerated electrons could be captured by the loaded Co(OH)2 nanoparticles. The interface formed between Co(OH)2 and CdS is vital to the enhancement of photocatalytic H2 generation. Electrochemical measurement results indicated that another reason for the enhanced photocatalytic activity of Co(OH)2/CdS catalyst is that Co(OH)2 has outstanding H2 generation activity.
