Design Principles Guiding Solvent Size Selection in ZIF-Based Type 3 Porous Liquids for Permanent Porosity

Porous liquids (PLs), which are solvent-based systems that contain permanent porosity due to the incorporation of a solid porous host, are of significant interest for the capture of greenhouse gases, including CO2. Type 3 PLs formed by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the nanoporous host provide a high degree of chemical turnability for gas capture. However, pore aperture fluctuation, such as gate-opening in zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF) MOFs, complicates the ability to keep the MOF pores available for gas adsorption. Therefore, an understanding of the solvent molecular size required to ensure exclusion from MOFs in ZIF-based Type 3 PLs is needed. Through a combined computational and experimental approach, the solvent-pore accessibility of exemplar MOF ZIF-8 was examined. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations identified that the lowest-energy solvent-ZIF interaction occurred at the pore aperture. Experimental density measurements of ZIF-8 dispersed in various-sized solvents showed that ZIF-8 adsorbed solvent molecules up to 2 Å larger than the crystallographic pore aperture. Density analysis of ZIF dispersions was further applied to a series of possible ZIF-based PLs, including ZIF-67, -69, -71(RHO), and -71(SOD), to examine the structure-property relationships governing solvent exclusion, which identified eight new ZIF-based Type 3 PL compositions. Solvent exclusion was driven by pore aperture expansion across all ZIFs, and the degree of expansion, as well as water exclusion, was influenced by ligand functionalization. Using these results, a design principle was formulated to guide the formation of future ZIF-based Type 3 PLs that ensures solvent-free pores and availability for gas adsorption.

Fast Gas-Adsorption Kinetics in Supraparticle-Based MOF Packings with Hierarchical Porosity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are microporous adsorbents for high-throughput gas separation. Such materials exhibit distinct adsorption characteristics owing to the flexibility of the crystal framework in a nanoparticle, which can be different from its bulk crystal. However, for practical applications, such particles need to be compacted into macroscopic pellets, creating mass-transport limitations. In this work, this problem is addressed by forming materials with structural hierarchy, using a supraparticle-based approach. Spherical supraparticles composed of nanosized MOF particles are fabricated by emulsion templating and they are used as the structural component forming a macroscopic material. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) particles are used as a model system and the gas-adsorption kinetics of the hierarchical material are compared with conventional pellets without structural hierarchy. It is demonstrated that a pellet packed with supraparticles exhibits a 30 times faster adsorption rate compared to an unstructured ZIF-8 powder pellet. These results underline the importance of controlling structural hierarchy to maximize the performance of existing materials. In the hierarchical MOFs, large macropores between the supraparticles, smaller macropores between individual ZIF-8 primary particles, and micropores inherent to the ZIF-8 framework collude to combine large surface area, defined adsorption sites, and efficient mass transport to enhance performance.

Crystallographic and Compositional Dependence of Thermodynamic Stability of [Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II)] in 2-Methylimidazole-Containing Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks

We report the first systematic study experimentally investigating the effect of changes to the divalent metal node on the thermodynamic stability of three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) based on 2-methylimidazolate linkers. In particular, the comparison of enthalpies of formation for materials based on cobalt, copper, and zinc suggests that the use of nodes with larger ionic radius metals leads to the stabilization of the porous sodalite topology with respect to the corresponding higher-density diamondoid (dia)-topology polymorphs. The stabilizing effect of metals is dependent on the framework topology and dimensionality. With previous works pointing to solvent-mediated transformation of 2D ZIF-L structures to their 3D analogues in the sodalite topology, thermodynamic measurements show that contrary to popular belief, the 2D frameworks are energetically stable, thus shedding light on the energetic landscape of these materials. Additionally, the calorimetric data confirm that a change in the dimensionality (3D → 2D) and the presence of structural water within the framework can stabilize structures by as much as 40 kJ·mol-1, making the formation of zinc-based ZIF-L material under such conditions thermodynamically preferred to the formation of both ZIF-8 and its dense, dia-topology polymorph.

Investigating the function and design of molecular materials through terahertz vibrational spectroscopy

Terahertz spectroscopy has proved to be an essential tool for the study of condensed phase materials. Terahertz spectroscopy probes the low-frequency vibrational dynamics of atoms and molecules, usually in the condensed phase. These nuclear dynamics, which typically involve displacements of entire molecules, have been linked to bulk phenomena ranging from phase transformations to semiconducting efficiency. The terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum has historically been referred to as the 'terahertz gap', but this is a misnomer, as there exist a multitude of methods for accessing terahertz frequencies, and now there are cost-effective instruments that have made terahertz studies much more user-friendly. This Review highlights some of the most exciting applications of terahertz vibrational spectroscopy so far, and provides an in-depth overview of the methods of this technique and its utility to the study of the chemical sciences.

Ni-Co bimetallic decorated dodecahedral ZIF as an efficient catalyst for photoelectrochemical degradation of sulfamethoxazole coupled with hydrogen production

In this work, a NiCo bimetallic ZIF (BMZIF) dodecahedron material has been synthesized by the precipitation approach and then used for simultaneously photoelectrocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and hydrogen production. The combination of Ni/Co loading in ZIF structure increased the specific surface area 1484 (m² g^-1) and photocurrent density (0.4 mA cm^-2), which can facilitate the good charge transfer efficiency. In presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS, 0.1 mM), the complete degradation of SMX (10 mg L^-1) was achieved at initial pH of 7 within 24 min, with the pseudo-first-order rate constants of 0.18 min^-1 and TOC removal efficiency of 85 %. Radical scavenger experiments affirm that ^•OH radicals were the primary oxygen reactive species to drive the SMX degradation. Along with SMX degradation at the anode, the H₂ production was observed at the cathode (140 μmol cm^-2 h^-1), which was 1.5 and 3 times higher than that of Co-ZIF and Ni-ZIF, respectively. The superior catalytic performance of BMZIF was assigned to the distinctive internal structure and synergistic effect between ZIF and Ni/Co bimetals, which improves light absorption and charge conduction efficiency. This study may provide insight into the new way to treat polluted water and simultaneously produce green energy using bimetallic ZIF in a PEC system.

Cellulose-based sponge@ZIF-8 from waste straws for water disinfection

In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles can be readily in situ generated on the skeleton surface throughout the entire structure of cellulose-based sponges obtained from waste corn straws via a hydrothermal process. Taking natural corn straws as the basic ingredient, the Water Cellulose-based Sponge@ZIF-8 (WCSZ) composite inherits the highly porous structure of straws, which is beneficial for the movement of H₂O molecules in both horizontal and vertical directions. A robust H-bond topological network is weaved between abundant hydroxyl groups of the corn straw cell wall matrix and H₂O molecules in the honeycomb cellular structure. Based on the topological network, the WCSZ composite maintains sufficient mechanical compressibility and elasticity, which could sustain repeated squeezing without structural failure. The WCSZ composite can not only bear a compressive strain as high as 60% but also completely recover its original height after the load is removed, exhibiting excellent mechanical property. More importantly, the WCSZ composite also presents exceptional antibacterial activities after ZIF-8 nanoparticles were introduced (antibacterial rate: 99.9%). Consequently, the WCSZ composite is an ideal candidate for highly efficient elimination of bacteria as the reusable water treatment material.

Dye encapsulation and one-pot synthesis of microporous-mesoporous zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for CO2 sorption and adenosine triphosphate biosensing

One-pot co-precipitation of target molecules e.g. organic dyes and the synthesis of a crystal containing microporous-mesoporous regimes of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) are reported. The synthesis method can be used for cationic (rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB)), and anionic (methyl blue (MeB)) dyes. The crystal growth of the ZIF-8 crystals takes place via an intermediate phase of zinc hydroxyl nitrate (Zn₅(OH)₈(NO₃)₂) nanosheets that enabled the adsorption of the target molecules i.e., RhB, MB, and MeB into their layers. The dye molecules play a role during crystal formation. The successful encapsulation of the dye molecules was proved via diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and electrochemical measurements e.g., cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The materials were investigated for carbon dioxide (CO₂) adsorption and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) biosensing. ZIF-8, RhB@ZIF-8, MB@ZIF-8, and MeB@ZIF-8 offered CO₂ adsorption capacities of 0.80, 0.84, 0.85, and 0.53 mmol g^-1, respectively. The encapsulated cationic molecules improved the adsorption performance compared to anionic molecules inside the crystal. The materials were also tested as a fluorescent probe for ATP biosensing. The simple synthesis procedure offered new materials with tunable surface properties and the potential for multi-functional applications.

Polymer Membranes of Zeolitic Imidazole Framework-8 with Sodium Alginate Synthesized from ZIF-8 and Their Application in Light Gas Separation

The potential of nanocomposite membranes (NCMs) prepared by the sodium alginate polymer and embedded with synthesized zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (ZIF-8) as fillers having microporous structure in the application of separation of gaseous mixture generated by the process of methane reforming was assessed. ZIF-8 crystals were created through hydrothermal synthesis, with sizes varying from 50 to 70 nm. NCMs were prepared with a 15% filler loading, i.e., synthesized ZIF-8. NCMs (ZIF-8) having H₂ permeability of 28 Barrer and H₂/CH₄ selectivity of 125 outperformed neat polymer membranes in terms of separation performance at ambient temperature and 4 kg/cm² pressure. The purity of H₂ increased to as high as 95% among the measured values. The NCMs did not, however, outperform a neat polymer membrane in terms of their ability to separate mixtures of gases. Moreover, the combination of ZIF-8 as a filler with sodium alginate was new and had not been reported previously. As a result, it is worthwhile to investigate.

Leaching in Specific Facets of ZIF-67 and ZIF-L Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks During the CO2 Cycloaddition with Epichlorohydrin

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have been profusely used as catalysts for inserting CO₂ into organic epoxides (i.e., epichlorohydrin) through cycloaddition. Here, we demonstrate that these materials suffer from irreversible degradation by leaching. To prove this, we performed the reactions and analyzed the final reaction mixtures by elemental analysis and the resulting materials by different microscopies. We found that the difference in catalytic activity between three ZIF-67 and one ZIF-L catalysts was related to the rate at which the materials degraded. Particularly, the {100} facet leaches faster than the others, regardless of the material used. The catalytic activity strongly depended on the amount of leached elements in the liquid phase since these species are extremely active. Our work points to the instability of these materials under relevant reaction conditions and the necessity of additional treatments to improve their stability.

Elucidating correlated defects in metal organic frameworks using theory-guided inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) that incorporate metal oxide cluster nodes, exemplified by UiO-66, have been widely studied, especially in terms of their deviations from the ideal, defect-free crystalline structures. Although defects such as missing linkers, missing nodes, and the presence of adventitious synthesis-derived node ligands (such as acetates and formates) have been proposed, their exact structures remain unknown. Previously, it was demonstrated that defects are correlated and span multiple unit cells. The highly specialized techniques used in these studies are not easily applicable to other MOFs. Thus, there is a need to develop new experimental and computational approaches to understand the structure and properties of defects in a wider variety of MOFs. Here, we show how low-frequency phonon modes measured by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy can be combined with density functional theory (DFT) simulations to provide unprecedented insights into the defect structure of UiO-66. We are able to identify and assign peaks in the fingerprint region (<100 cm^-1) which correspond to phonon modes only present in certain defective topologies. Specifically, this analysis suggests that our sample of UiO-66 consists of predominantly defect-free fcu regions with smaller domains corresponding to a defective bcu topology with 4 and 2 acetate ligands bound to the Zr₆O₈ nodes. Importantly, the INS/DFT approach provides detailed structural insights (e.g., relative positions and numbers of acetate ligands) that are not accessible with microscopy-based techniques. The quantitative agreement between DFT simulations and the experimental INS spectrum combined with the relative simplicity of sample preparation, suggests that this methodology may become part of the standard and preferred protocol for the characterization of MOFs, and, in particular, for elucidating the structure defects in these materials.

Flexibility of Mixed Ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF-7-8) under CO2 Pressure: An Investigation Using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy

Fine tuning of the pore architecture and flexibility of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) is highly crucial for realizing their applications in molecular gas separation. Mixed ligand frameworks (ZIF-7-8) synthesized by mixing 2-methylimidazole (2meIm) and benzimidazole (bIm) ligands show enhanced gas separation performance, attributable to pore and flexibility tuning. In the present study, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements under CO₂ pressure have been used to experimentally investigate the tuning of the pore architecture and flexibility of mixed ligand frameworks ZIF-7-8 having a ZIF-8 structure and similar morphology with varying bIm content up to 18.2%. The aperture and cavity of frameworks begin to open up with an increasing bIm ligand content followed by a decrease at a higher content. On the contrary, flexibility of the frameworks indexed from PALS measurements carried out under CO₂ pressure shows a decreasing trend followed by an increase. The present study shows that mixed ligand frameworks having a larger aperture size are less flexible as a result of inherent open configurations of ligands in the framework lattice. On the other hand, frameworks having a comparatively smaller aperture size show higher flexibility as a result of a possibility of twisting of the ligands under CO₂ pressure, resulting in aperture opening. The pore-opening phenomenon as a result of lattice flexibility under CO₂ pressure is observed to be fully reversible for ZIF-7-8.

ZIF-L to ZIF-8 Transformation: Morphology and Structure Controls

The control of the structure, shape, and components of metal-organic frameworks, in which metal ions and organic ligands coordinate to form crystalline nanopore structures, plays an important role in the use of many electrochemical applications, such as energy storage, high-performance photovoltaic devices, and supercapacitors. In this study, systematic controls of synthesis variables were performed to control the morphology of ZIF-8 during the ZIF-L-to-ZIF-8 transformation of ZIF-L, which has the same building block as ZIF-8 but forms a two-dimensional structure. Furthermore, additional precursors or surfactants (Zn²⁺, 2mIm, and CTAB) were introduced during the transition to determine whether the alteration could be regulated. Lastly, the partial substitution insertion of a new organic precursor, 2abIm, during the ZIF-L-to-ZIF-8 transformation of ZIF-L was achieved, and modulation of the adsorption and pore characteristics (suppression of gate-opening properties of ZIF-8) has been confirmed.

New Generation of MOF-Monoliths Based on Metal Foams

Herein, it has been developed a method to prepare metallic foams starting from Zamak5 (ZnAlCu alloy) with different pore sizes. The Zamak5 metallic foam is designed to serve as a support and metallic precursor of ZIF-8. In this way, composite materials MOF-metal can be prepared, these composites have a large number of application in energy exchange processe such as: adsorption or chemical reactions. Additionally, this method of sythesizing MOFs is environmentally friendly thanks to absence of solvents. Hanerssing the low melting point of the linker, the linker is infiltrated into the foam where the foam and the linker react to form the ZIF-8. In this way we have managed to transform part of the foam into ZIF-8 crystals that remain adhered to the foam. The foams have been characterized and modeled studying the mechanical and electrical properties, finding that both can be predected by various models. Among these, Ashby and Mortensen models for mechanical properties and Ashby and Percolation model for electrical properties stand.

ResponZIF Structures: Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks as Stimuli-Responsive Materials

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have long been recognized as a prominent subset of the metal-organic framework (MOF) family, in part because of their ease of synthesis and good thermal and chemical stability, alongside attractive properties for diverse potential applications. Prototypical ZIFs like ZIF-8 have become embodiments of the significant promise held by porous coordination polymers as next-generation designer materials. At the same time, their intriguing property of experiencing significant structural changes upon the application of external stimuli such as temperature, mechanical pressure, guest adsorption, or electromagnetic fields, among others, has placed this family of MOFs squarely under the umbrella of stimuli-responsive materials. In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of the triggered structural and electronic responses observed in ZIFs (linker and bond dynamics, crystalline and amorphous phase changes, luminescence, etc.). We then describe the state-of-the-art experimental and computational methodology capable of shedding light on these complex phenomena, followed by a comprehensive summary of the stimuli-responsive nature of four prototypical ZIFs: ZIF-8, ZIF-7, ZIF-4, and ZIF-zni. We further expose the relevant challenges for the characterization and fundamental understanding of responsive ZIFs, including how to take advantage of their flexible properties for new application avenues.

Fine-Tuning Window Apertures in ZIF-8/67 Frameworks by Metal Ions and Temperature for High-Efficiency Molecular Sieving of Xylenes

Separation of structurally similar components from their mixtures is one of the most promising applications of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A high efficiency of such molecular sieving requires fine tuning of the MOF structure. In this work, we investigate subtle metal- and temperature-induced changes in window dimensions of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8(Zn) and ZIF-67(Co)) and apply such structural tuning for efficient separation of xylene isomers (p-, m-, and o-xylenes). The use of Co instead of Zn favorably modifies window geometry: it accelerates the diffusion of all components by a factor of 2-3 while maintaining closely the same separation efficiency as that of ZIF-8(Zn). Outstanding selectivity above 18:1 and faster isolation of demanded p-xylene from the ternary mixture using ZIF-67(Co) have been demonstrated at room temperature, opening new horizons for its energy-efficient xylene separation. More generally, our findings suggest the prospective ways to tune various MOFs for target liquid-state separations.

Dynamics & Spectroscopy with Neutrons-Recent Developments & Emerging Opportunities

This work provides an up-to-date overview of recent developments in neutron spectroscopic techniques and associated computational tools to interrogate the structural properties and dynamical behavior of complex and disordered materials, with a focus on those of a soft and polymeric nature. These have and continue to pave the way for new scientific opportunities simply thought unthinkable not so long ago, and have particularly benefited from advances in high-resolution, broadband techniques spanning energy transfers from the meV to the eV. Topical areas include the identification and robust assignment of low-energy modes underpinning functionality in soft solids and supramolecular frameworks, or the quantification in the laboratory of hitherto unexplored nuclear quantum effects dictating thermodynamic properties. In addition to novel classes of materials, we also discuss recent discoveries around water and its phase diagram, which continue to surprise us. All throughout, emphasis is placed on linking these ongoing and exciting experimental and computational developments to specific scientific questions in the context of the discovery of new materials for sustainable technologies.

Hybrid Perovskites, Metal-Organic Frameworks, and Beyond: Unconventional Degrees of Freedom in Molecular Frameworks

ConspectusThe structural degrees of freedom of a solid material are the various distortions most straightforwardly activated by external stimuli such as temperature, pressure, or adsorption. One of the most successful design strategies in materials chemistry involves controlling these individual distortions to produce useful collective functional responses. In a ferroelectric such as lead titanate, for example, the key degree of freedom involves asymmetric displacements of Pb2+ and Ti4+ cations; it is by coupling these together that the system as a whole interacts with external electric fields. Collective rotations of the polyhedral units in oxide ceramics are another commonly exploited distortion, driving anomalous behavior such as negative thermal expansion-the counterintuitive phenomenon of volume contraction on heating. An exciting development in the field has been to take advantage of the interplay between different distortion types: generating polarization by combining two different polyhedral rotations, for example. In this way, degrees of freedom act as geometric "elements" that can themselves be combined to engineer materials with new and interesting properties. Just as the discovery of new chemical elements quite obviously diversified chemical space, we might expect that identifying new and different types of structural degrees of freedom to be an important strategy for developing new kinds of functional materials. In this context, the broad family of molecular frameworks is emerging as an extraordinarily fertile source of new and unanticipated distortion types, the vast majority of which have no parallel in the established families of conventional solid-state chemistry.Framework materials are solids whose structures are assembled from two fundamental components: nodes and linkers. Quite simply, linkers join the nodes together to form scaffolding-like networks that extend from the atomic to the macroscopic scale. These structures usually contain cavities, which can also accommodate additional ions for charge balance. In the well-established systems-such as lead titanate-node, linker, and extra-framework ions are all individual atoms (Ti, O, and Pb, respectively). But in molecular frameworks, at least one of these components is a molecule.In this Account, we survey the unconventional degrees of freedom introduced through the simple act of replacing atoms by molecules. Our motivation is to understand the role these new distortions play (or might be expected to play) in different materials properties. The various degrees of freedom themselves-unconventional rotational, translational, orientational, and conformational states-are summarized and described in the context of relevant experimental examples. The much-improved prospect for generating emergent functionalities by combining these new distortion types is then discussed. We highlight a number of directions for future research-including the design and application of hierarchically structured phases of matter intermediate to solids and liquid crystals-which serve to highlight the extraordinary possibilities for this nascent field.

Capture and Decomposition of the Nerve Agent Simulant, DMCP, Using the Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework (ZIF-8)

Understanding mechanisms of decontamination of chemical warfare agents (CWA) is an area of intense research aimed at developing new filtration materials to protect soldiers and civilians in case of state-sponsored or terrorist attack. In this study, we employed complementary structural, chemical, and dynamic probes and in situ data collection, to elucidate the complex chemistry, capture, and decomposition of the CWA simulant, dimethyl chlorophosphonate (DMCP). Our work reveals key details of the reactive adsorption of DMCP and demonstrates the versatility of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) as a plausible material for CWA capture and decomposition. The in situ synchrotron-based powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and pair distribution function (PDF) studies, combined with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zinc K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), and Raman spectroscopies, showed that the unique structure, chemical state, and topology of ZIF-8 enable accessibility, adsorption, and hydrolysis of DMCP into the pores and revealed the importance of linker chemistry and Zn²⁺ sites for nerve agent decomposition. DMCP decontamination and decomposition product(s) formation were observed by thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and phosphorus (P) K-edge XANES studies. Differential PDF analysis indicated that the average structure of ZIF-8 (at the 30 Å scale) remains unchanged after DMCP dosing and provided information on the dynamics of interactions of DMCP with the ZIF-8 framework. Using in situ PXRD and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), we showed that nearly 90% regeneration of the ZIF-8 structure and complete liberation of DMCP and decomposition products occur upon heating.

Structural Deterioration of Well-Faceted MOFs upon H2S Exposure and Its Effect in the Adsorption Performance

The structural deterioration of archetypical, well-faceted metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been evaluated upon exposure to an acidic environment (H₂S). Experimental results show that the structural damage highly depends on the nature of the hybrid network (e.g., softness of the metal ions, hydrophilic properties, among others) and the crystallographic orientation of the exposed facets. Microscopy images show that HKUST-1 with well-defined octahedral (111) facets is completely deteriorated, ZIF-8 with preferentially exposed (110) facets exhibits a large external deterioration with the development of holes or cavities in the mesoporous range, whereas UiO-66-NH₂ with (111) exposed facets, and PCN-250 with (100) facets does not reflect any sign of surface damage. Despite the selectivity in the external deterioration, X-ray diffraction and gas adsorption measurements confirm that indeed all MOFs suffer an important internal deterioration, these effects being more severe for MOFs based on softer cations (e.g., Cu-based HKUST-1 and Fe-based PCN-250). These structural changes have inevitable important effects in the final adsorption performance for CO₂ and CH₄ at low and high pressures.

Simulation of Inelastic Neutron Scattering Spectra Directly from Molecular Dynamics Trajectories

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is a widely used technique to study atomic and molecular vibrations. With the increasing complexity of materials and thus the INS spectra, being able to simulate the spectra from various atomistic models becomes an essential step and also a major bottleneck for INS data analysis. The conventional approach using density functional theory and lattice dynamics often falls short when the materials of interest are complex (e.g., defective, disordered, heterogeneous, amorphous, large-scale), for which molecular dynamics driven by an interatomic force field is a more common approach. In this paper, we demonstrate a method to directly convert molecular dynamics trajectories into simulated INS spectra, including not only fundamental but also higher order excitations. The results are compared with data collected on various representative samples from different neutron spectrometers. This development will open great opportunities by providing the key tool to perform in-depth analysis of INS data and to validate and optimize computer models.

MOF-Based Membranes for Gas Separations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent the largest known class of porous crystalline materials ever synthesized. Their narrow pore windows and nearly unlimited structural and chemical features have made these materials of significant interest for membrane-based gas separations. In this comprehensive review, we discuss opportunities and challenges related to the formation of pure MOF films and mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). Common and emerging separation applications are identified, and membrane transport theory for MOFs is described and contextualized relative to the governing principles that describe transport in polymers. Additionally, cross-cutting research opportunities using advanced metrologies and computational techniques are reviewed. To quantify membrane performance, we introduce a simple membrane performance score that has been tabulated for all of the literature data compiled in this review. These data are reported on upper bound plots, revealing classes of MOF materials that consistently demonstrate promising separation performance. Recommendations are provided with the intent of identifying the most promising materials and directions for the field in terms of fundamental science and eventual deployment of MOF materials for commercial membrane-based gas separations.

Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) through the Lens of Molecular Dynamics Simulation: Current Status and Future Perspective

As hybrid porous structures with outstanding properties, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have entered into a large variety of industrial applications in recent years. As a result of their specific structure, that includes metal ions and organic linkers, MOFs have remarkable and tunable properties, such as a high specific surface area, excellent storage capacity, and surface modification possibility, making them appropriate for many industries like sensors, pharmacies, water treatment, energy storage, and ion transportation. Although the volume of experimental research on the properties and performance of MOFs has multiplied over a short period of time, exploring these structures from a theoretical perspective such as via molecular dynamics simulation (MD) requires a more in-depth focus. The ability to identify and demonstrate molecular interactions between MOFs and host materials in which they are incorporates is of prime importance in developing next generations of these hybrid structures. Therefore, in the present article, we have presented a brief overview of the different MOFs’ properties and applications from the most recent MD-based studies and have provided a perspective on the future developments of MOFs from the MD viewpoint.

Thermodynamic Evidence of Structural Transformations in CO2-Loaded Metal-Organic Framework Zn(MeIm)2 from Heat Capacity Measurements

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of porous compounds with potential applications in molecular sieving, gas sequestration, and catalysis. One family of MOFs, zeolitic imidizolate frameworks (ZIFs), is of particular interest for carbon dioxide sequestration. We have previously reported the heat capacity of the sodalite topology of the zinc 2-methylimidazolate framework (ZIF-8), and in this Article we present the first low-temperature heat capacity measurements of ZIF-8 with various amounts of sorbed CO₂. Molar heat capacities from 1.8 to 300 K are presented for samples containing up to 0.99 mol of CO₂ per mol of ZIF-8. Samples with at least 0.56 mol of CO₂ per mol of ZIF-8 display a large, broad anomaly from 70 to 220 K with a shoulder on the low-temperature side, suggesting sorption-induced structural transitions. We attribute the broad anomaly partially to a gate-opening transition, with the remainder resulting from CO₂ rearrangement and/or lattice expansion. The measurements also reveal a subtle anomaly from 0 to 70 K in all samples that does not exist in the sorbate-free material, which likely reflects new vibrational modes resulting from sorbate/ZIF-8 interactions. These results provide the first thermodynamic evidence of structural transitions induced by CO₂ sorption in the ZIF-8 framework.

Functionalized Dynamic Metal-Organic Frameworks as Smart Switches for Sensing and Adsorption Applications

Over the past two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with flexible structures or dynamic behavior have shown great potential as functional materials in many fields. This paper presents a review of these dynamic and functional MOFs, which can undergo controllable and reversible transformation, with regard to their application as smart switches. Trigger conditions, which include physical/chemical stimuli (e.g., guest molecules, light, temperature, pressure), are also discussed. Research methods for investigating the dynamic processes and mechanisms involving experimental characterization and computational modeling are briefly mentioned as well. The emphasis is on the aspects of the design and functionalization of dynamic MOFs. The pre-design of metal nodes, organic linkers, and topology, as well as post-modification of components, increases the possibility of obtaining functionalized dynamic materials. Recent advances with regard to potential applications for dynamic frameworks as smart switches for adsorption and sensing are also reviewed.

Post-Synthetic Modification of ZIF-8 Crystals and Films through UV Light Photoirradiation: Impact on the Physicochemical Behavior of the MOF

The physicochemical modification of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) is a current challenge in the search to improve their performance in different technological applications. In this work we analyze the post-synthetic modification of ZIF-8 crystals and films through a simple and clean treatment that involves the exposure to a UV lamp under environmental conditions. It is demonstrated that a short treatment alters the MOF structure and chemistry, providing a modified ZIF-8 due to partial disconnections of its structure which increase the amount of terminal surface species such as Zn-OH and -C=N-H, but without compromising the overall MOF structure, specific surface area or thermal stability. Additionally, it leads to changes in several properties of the ZIF-8, such as its capacity to accumulate charge through pseudocapacitive processes, its interaction with nitric oxide and its light absorption behavior. This strategy of modifying ZIF-8 without the use of chemicals through a gentle disconnection of its own structure could open new perspectives of post-functionalization of crystals and films of ZIF-8 to be used in a wide range of applications.

Thermodynamic evidence of a transition in ZIF-8 upon CH4 sorption

We present the results of an experimental study of methane sorption in ZIF-8. We measured isotherms at five different temperatures between 87 K and 107 K. We have observed three sub-steps in each of the isotherms. The intermediate sub-step had not been observed experimentally in previous studies of this system. This newly determined experimental feature suggests that a transition is taking place in the sorbed system (this newly observed sub-step occurs over a loading interval where published computer simulation results for CH4 in ZIF-8 had identified a structural transition occurring in the sorbent). We have studied the kinetics of adsorption for this system (we measure the time required for the system to reach equilibrium after gas is added to the experimental cell as a function of sorbent loading). We observed a sharp peak in the equilibration time at high loadings, below saturation. We have explored the isosteric heat of adsorption, and its dependence on sorbent loading, for this system. We found a broad peak in the isosteric heat at loadings corresponding to the intermediate isotherm sub-step. Previously reported computer simulations for the isosteric heat dependence on loading for CH4 in ZIF-8 are in good agreement with our experimental results for this quantity.

Flexibility in Metal–Organic Frameworks: A Basic Understanding

Much has been written about the fundamental aspects of the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Still, details concerning the MOFs with structural flexibility are not comprehensively understood. However, a dramatic increase in research activities concerning rigid MOFs over the years has brought deeper levels of understanding for their properties and applications. Nonetheless, robustness and flexibility of such smart frameworks are intriguing for different research areas such as catalysis, adsorption, etc. This manuscript overviews the different aspects of framework flexibility. The review has touched lightly on several ideas and proposals, which have been demonstrated within the selected examples to provide a logical basis to obtain a fundamental understanding of their synthesis and behavior to external stimuli.

Linker-Doped Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) and Their Ultrathin Membranes for Tunable Gas Separations

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) have gained much interest due to their potentials in gas separations. A hybrid approach by mixing metals and/or linkers has been recently investigated to fine-tune the ZIF framework porosity and surface properties and potentially extending their separation applications for many important gas mixtures. In general, the hybrid approach requires mixing of isostructural ZIFs to maintain their topology, thus limiting the options of linkers and metal centers to obtain hybrid ZIFs. Linker-doping, as reported here, can be a strategy to expand the option of imidazolate linkers to obtain mixed-linker hybrid ZIFs. Two linkers are investigated to be doped into the ZIF-8 framework: 2-ethylimidazole (eIm) and 2-phenylimidazole (phIm). The linker-doping strategy is shown to tune the "stiffness" of Zn-N bonding as characterized by FT-IR, thereby the linker flip-flopping motion of ZIF-8, which is analyzed through gas adsorption isotherms. Furthermore, well-intergrown ultrathin eIm-doped ZIF-8 membranes are grown on α-Al₂O₃ substrates, in which the incorporation of eIm affects the morphology and thickness of the polycrystalline membranes, improving the permeance of propylene and propane molecules.

Phonons in deformable microporous crystalline solids

Phonons are quantum elastic excitations of crystalline solids. Classically, they correspond to the collective vibrations of atoms in ordered periodic structures. They determine the thermodynamic properties of solids and their stability in the case of structural transformations. Here we review for the first time the existing examples of the phonon analysis of adsorption-induced transformations occurring in microporous crystalline materials. We discuss the role of phonons in determining the mechanism of the deformations. We point out that phonon-based methodology may be used as a predictive tool in characterization of flexible microporous structures; therefore, relevant numerical tools must be developed.

On the Efficient Separation of Gas Mixtures with the Mixed-Linker Zeolitic-Imidazolate Framework-7-8

A recently reported modification of the zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with partial replacement of the 2-methylimidazolate (mIm) linker with benzimidazolate (bIm), namely ZIF-7-8, is investigated with molecular simulations using a first-time reported force field. The size of the ZIF-7-8 aperture, which governs the gas-separation efficiency of this material and which has not been estimated before for this modification, is smaller than that of the original ZIF-8. The diffusivities of CO₂, N₂, and CH₄ estimated through transition state theory calculations result in remarkably high diffusion selectivities for CO₂/CH₄ and CO₂/N₂ mixtures. This performance enhancement is investigated in terms of structural flexibility in the form of the aperture motion through extensive estimation of the effective diameter, the total effective area, and the motion of the aperture linkers, of both ZIF-8 and ZIF-7-8. Both apertures exhibit an oscillation through the rotation of the linkers, which are adjusted according to the size of the penetrant molecules the moment they pass through it. Finally, a subsequent analysis reveals that there is strong dependency of the separation performance on the bIm-to-mIm ratio: below 33% bIm incorporation, the appearance of ZIF-8-alike wide apertures decreases dramatically the size-based selectivity of the mixtures in ZIF-7-8.

On flexible force fields for metal-organic frameworks: Recent developments and future prospects

Classical force field simulations can be used to study structural, diffusion, and adsorption properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). To account for the dynamic behavior of the material, parameterization schemes have been developed to derive force constants and the associated reference values by fitting on ab initio energies, vibrational frequencies, and elastic constants. Here, we review recent developments in flexible force field models for MOFs. Existing flexible force field models are generally able to reproduce the majority of experimentally observed structural and dynamic properties of MOFs. The lack of efficient sampling schemes for capturing stimuli-driven phase transitions, however, currently limits the full predictive potential of existing flexible force fields from being realized. Tailoring the gas separation efficiency of metal organic framework ZIF-8 through metal substitution: a computational study

The influence of a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)'s metal identity on its gas separation performance is studied extensively through molecular simulations for a variety of gases. ZIF-8 is used as the original framework for alterations of different metal substitutes of the Zn²⁺ metal. ZIF-8 consists of cages connected by narrow apertures that exhibit flexibility through "swelling", allowing for relatively large penetrants to diffuse. Replacing the central metal atom in the basic tetrahedral unit of ZIF-8 with Cd, Co or Be results in three different structures with increasing bonding stiffness with their neighboring atoms. The metal modification approach offers a way to control the flexibility and the size of the aperture, which constitutes the main energy barrier of the penetrant's hop-like diffusion between the framework's cages. Newly developed force fields are reported and utilized here; the new frameworks are compared to the original one, in terms of the diffusivity of various gas molecules as a function of their size (from He to n-butane). The correlation of the gas diffusivity with the aperture flexibility-molecular size relation is investigated. The results reveal that the aperture flexibility-molecular size relation governs the diffusivity, which shapes a common trend along all modifications. Furthermore, a new generalized method is employed for the screening of the various modifications for specific gas separations. This method is useful to detect optimum separation performance for the various modifications: CdIF-1 (Cd) for n-butane/iso-butane mixture; ZIF-67 (Co) for propylene/n-propane and ethylene/ethane mixtures; BeIF-1 (Be) for CO₂/C₂H₆, CO₂/CH₄ and CO₂/N₂ mixtures.

Molecular Mechanism of Swing Effect in Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework ZIF-8: Continuous Deformation upon Adsorption

Zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 displays flexibility of its structure by rotation of its imidazolate linker. This "swing effect" has been widely described in the literature, both experimentally and theoretically, as a bistable system where the linker oscillates between two structures: "open window" and "closed window". By using quantum chemistry calculations and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, it is shown that the deformation upon adsorption is in fact continuous upon pore loading, with thermodynamics of packing effects being the reason behind stepped adsorption isotherms experimentally observed. Finally, we study a variant of ZIF-8 with a different linker, highlighting the influence of the linker and the balance of microscopic interactions on the framework's flexibility.

Detecting Molecular Rotational Dynamics Complementing the Low-Frequency Terahertz Vibrations in a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework

We show clear experimental evidence of cooperative terahertz (THz) dynamics observed below 3 THz (∼100  cm^{-1}), for a low-symmetry Zr-based metal-organic framework structure, termed MIL-140A [ZrO(O_{2}C-C_{6}H_{4}-CO_{2})]. Utilizing a combination of high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering and synchrotron radiation far-infrared spectroscopy, we measured low-energy vibrations originating from the hindered rotations of organic linkers, whose energy barriers and detailed dynamics have been elucidated via ab initio density functional theory calculations. The complex pore architecture caused by the THz rotations has been characterized. We discovered an array of soft modes with trampolinelike motions, which could potentially be the source of anomalous mechanical phenomena such as negative thermal expansion. Our results demonstrate coordinated shear dynamics (2.47 THz), a mechanism which we have shown to destabilize the framework structure, in the exact crystallographic direction of the minimum shear modulus (G_{min}).
