Improved photocatalytic performance of TiO2/carbon photocatalysts: Role of carbon additive

A series of TiO2 - based photocatalysts have been prepared by the incorporation of 10 wt% of various carbon-based nanomaterials as modifying agents to titania. More specifically, commercial TiO2 P25 was modified through a wet impregnation approach with methanol with four different carbon nanostructures: single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), partially reduced graphene oxide (prGO), graphite (GI), and graphitic carbon nitride (gCN). Characterization results (XPS and Raman) anticipate the occurrence of important interfacial phenomena, preferentially for samples TiO2/SWCNT and TiO2/prGO, with a binding energy displacement in the Ti 2p contribution of 1.35 eV and 1.54 eV, respectively. These findings could be associated with an improved electron-hole mobility at the carbon/oxide interface. Importantly, these two samples constitute the most promising photocatalysts for Rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation, with nearly 100% conversion in less than 2 h. These promising results must be associated with intrinsic physicochemical changes at the formed heterojunction structure and the potential dual-role of the composites able to adsorb and degrade RhB simultaneously. Cyclability tests confirm the improved performance of the composites (e.g., TiO2/SWCNT, 100% degradation in 1 h) due to the combined adsorption/degradation ability, although the regeneration after several cycles is not complete due to partial blocking of the inner cavities in the carbon nanotubes by non-reacted RhB. Under these reaction conditions, Rhodamine-B xanthene dye degrades via the de-ethylation route.

Establishing ZIF-8 as a reference material for hydrogen cryoadsorption: An interlaboratory study

Hydrogen storage by cryoadsorption on porous materials has the advantages of low material cost, safety, fast kinetics, and high cyclic stability. The further development of this technology requires reliable data on the H2 uptake of the adsorbents, however, even for activated carbons the values between different laboratories show sometimes large discrepancies. So far no reference material for hydrogen cryoadsorption is available. The metal-organic framework ZIF-8 is an ideal material possessing high thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability that reduces degradation during handling and activation. Here, we distributed ZIF-8 pellets synthesized by extrusion to 9 laboratories equipped with 15 different experimental setups including gravimetric and volumetric analyzers. The gravimetric H2 uptake of the pellets was measured at 77 K and up to 100 bar showing a high reproducibility between the different laboratories, with a small relative standard deviation of 3-4 % between pressures of 10-100 bar. The effect of operating variables like the amount of sample or analysis temperature was evaluated, remarking the calibration of devices and other correction procedures as the most significant deviation sources. Overall, the reproducible hydrogen cryoadsorption measurements indicate the robustness of the ZIF-8 pellets, which we want to propose as a reference material.

Zr-Porphyrin Metal-Organic Framework as nanoreactor for boosting the formation of hydrogen clathrates

We report the first experimental evidence for rapid formation of hydrogen clathrates under mild pressure and temperature conditions within the cavities of a zirconium-metalloporphyrin framework, specifically PCN-222. PCN-222 has been selected for its 1D mesoporous channels, high water-stability, and proper hydrophilic behavior. Firstly, we optimize a microwave (MW)-assisted method for the synthesis of nanosized PCN-222 particles with precise structure control (exceptional homogeneity in morphology and crystalline phase purity), taking advantage of MW in terms of rapid/homogeneous heating, time and energy savings, as well as potential scalability of the synthetic method. Second, we explore the relevance of the large mesoporous 1D open channels within the PCN-222 to promote the nucleation and growth of confined hydrogen clathrates. Experimental results show that PCN-222 drives the nucleation process at a lower pressure than the bulk system (1.35 kbar vs 2 kbar), with fast kinetics (minutes), using pure water, and with a nearly complete water-to-hydrate conversion. Unfortunately, PCN-222 cannot withstand these high pressures, which lead to a significant alteration of the mesoporous structure while the microporous network remains mainly unchanged.

An Atomically Dispersed Mn-Photocatalyst for Generating Hydrogen Peroxide from Seawater via the Water Oxidation Reaction (WOR)

In this work, we have fabricated an aryl amino-substituted graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) catalyst with atomically dispersed Mn capable of generating hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) directly from seawater. This new catalyst exhibited excellent reactivity, obtaining up to 2230 μM H₂O₂ in 7 h from alkaline water and up to 1800 μM from seawater under identical conditions. More importantly, the catalyst was quickly recovered for subsequent reuse without appreciable loss in performance. Interestingly, unlike the usual two-electron oxygen reduction reaction pathway, the generation of H₂O₂ was through a less common two-electron water oxidation reaction (WOR) process in which both the direct and indirect WOR processes occurred; namely, photoinduced h⁺ directly oxidized H₂O to H₂O₂ via a one-step 2e^- WOR, and photoinduced h⁺ first oxidized a hydroxide (OH^-) ion to generate a hydroxy radical (^•OH), and H₂O₂ was formed indirectly by the combination of two ^•OH. We have characterized the material, at the catalytic sites, at the atomic level using electron paramagnetic resonance, X-ray absorption near edge structure, extended X-ray absorption fine structure, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and multiscale molecular modeling, combining classical reactive molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemistry calculations.

Monolithic Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Energy-Efficient Water Adsorption Applications

Space cooling and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) accounts for roughly 10% of global electricity use and are responsible for ca. 1.13 gigatonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. Adsorbent-based HVAC technologies have long been touted as an energy-efficient alternative to traditional refrigeration systems. However, thus far, no suitable adsorbents have been developed which overcome the drawbacks associated with traditional sorbent materials such as silica gels and zeolites. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer order-of-magnitude improvements in water adsorption and regeneration energy requirements. However, the deployment of MOFs in HVAC applications has been hampered by issues related to MOF powder processing. Herein, three high-density, shaped, monolithic MOFs (UiO-66, UiO-66-NH₂ , and Zr-fumarate) with exceptional volumetric gas/vapor uptake are developed-solving previous issues in MOF-HVAC deployment. The monolithic structures across the mesoporous range are visualized using small-angle X-ray scattering and lattice-gas models, giving accurate predictions of adsorption characteristics of the monolithic materials. It is also demonstrated that a fragile MOF such as Zr-fumarate can be synthesized in monolithic form with a bulk density of 0.76 gcm^-3 without losing any adsorption performance, having a coefficient of performance (COP) of 0.71 with a low regeneration temperature (≤ 100 °C).

Densified HKUST-1 Monoliths as a Route to High Volumetric and Gravimetric Hydrogen Storage Capacity

We are currently witnessing the dawn of hydrogen (H₂) economy, where H₂ will soon become a primary fuel for heating, transportation, and long-distance and long-term energy storage. Among diverse possibilities, H₂ can be stored as a pressurized gas, a cryogenic liquid, or a solid fuel via adsorption onto porous materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as adsorbent materials with the highest theoretical H₂ storage densities on both a volumetric and gravimetric basis. However, a critical bottleneck for the use of H₂ as a transportation fuel has been the lack of densification methods capable of shaping MOFs into practical formulations while maintaining their adsorptive performance. Here, we report a high-throughput screening and deep analysis of a database of MOFs to find optimal materials, followed by the synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of an optimal monolithic MOF (_monoMOF) for H₂ storage. After densification, this _monoMOF stores 46 g L^-1 H₂ at 50 bar and 77 K and delivers 41 and 42 g L^-1 H₂ at operating pressures of 25 and 50 bar, respectively, when deployed in a combined temperature-pressure (25-50 bar/77 K → 5 bar/160 K) swing gas delivery system. This performance represents up to an 80% reduction in the operating pressure requirements for delivering H₂ gas when compared with benchmark materials and an 83% reduction compared to compressed H₂ gas. Our findings represent a substantial step forward in the application of high-density materials for volumetric H₂ storage applications.

Monolithic metal-organic frameworks for carbon dioxide separation

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is both a primary contributor to global warming and a major industrial impurity. Traditional approaches to carbon capture involve corrosive and energy-intensive processes such as liquid amine absorption. Although adsorptive separation has long been a promising alternative to traditional processes, up to this point there has been a lack of appropriate adsorbents capable of capturing CO2 whilst maintaining low regeneration energies. In the context of CO2 capture, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained much attention in the past two decades as potential materials. Their tuneable nature allows for precise control over the pore size and chemistry, which allows for the tailoring of their properties for the selective adsorption of CO2. While many candidate materials exist, the amount of research into material shaping for use in industrial processes has been limited. Traditional shaping strategies such as pelletisation involve the use of binders and/or mechanical processes, which can have a detrimental impact on the adsorption properties of the resulting materials or can result in low-density structures with low volumetric adsorption capacities. Herein, we demonstrate the use of a series of monolithic MOFs (monoUiO-66, monoUiO-66-NH2 & monoHKUST-1) for use in gas separation processes.

Chlorination of a Zeolitic-Imidazolate Framework Tunes Packing and van der Waals Interaction of Carbon Dioxide for Optimized Adsorptive Separation

Molecular separation of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄) is of growing interest for biogas upgrading, carbon capture and utilization, methane synthesis and for purification of natural gas. Here, we report a new zeolitic-imidazolate framework (ZIF), coined COK-17, with exceptionally high affinity for the adsorption of CO₂ by London dispersion forces, mediated by chlorine substituents of the imidazolate linkers. COK-17 is a new type of flexible zeolitic-imidazolate framework Zn(4,5-dichloroimidazolate)₂ with the SOD framework topology. Below 200 K it displays a metastable closed-pore phase next to its stable open-pore phase. At temperatures above 200 K, COK-17 always adopts its open-pore structure, providing unique adsorption sites for selective CO₂ adsorption and packing through van der Waals interactions with the chlorine groups, lining the walls of the micropores. Localization of the adsorbed CO₂ molecules by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction data and periodic density functional theory calculations revealed the presence and nature of different adsorption sites. In agreement with experimental data, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations of adsorption isotherms of CO₂ and CH₄ in COK-17 confirmed the role of the chlorine functions of the linkers and demonstrated the superiority of COK-17 compared to other adsorbents such as ZIF-8 and ZIF-71.

Structural Deterioration of Well-Faceted MOFs upon H2S Exposure and Its Effect in the Adsorption Performance

The structural deterioration of archetypical, well-faceted metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been evaluated upon exposure to an acidic environment (H₂S). Experimental results show that the structural damage highly depends on the nature of the hybrid network (e.g., softness of the metal ions, hydrophilic properties, among others) and the crystallographic orientation of the exposed facets. Microscopy images show that HKUST-1 with well-defined octahedral (111) facets is completely deteriorated, ZIF-8 with preferentially exposed (110) facets exhibits a large external deterioration with the development of holes or cavities in the mesoporous range, whereas UiO-66-NH₂ with (111) exposed facets, and PCN-250 with (100) facets does not reflect any sign of surface damage. Despite the selectivity in the external deterioration, X-ray diffraction and gas adsorption measurements confirm that indeed all MOFs suffer an important internal deterioration, these effects being more severe for MOFs based on softer cations (e.g., Cu-based HKUST-1 and Fe-based PCN-250). These structural changes have inevitable important effects in the final adsorption performance for CO₂ and CH₄ at low and high pressures.

A reference high-pressure CH4 adsorption isotherm for zeolite Y: results of an interlaboratory study

This paper reports the results of an international interlaboratory study led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on the measurement of high-pressure surface excess methane adsorption isotherms on NIST Reference Material RM 8850 (Zeolite Y), at 25 °C up to 7.5 MPa. Twenty laboratories participated in the study and contributed over one-hundred adsorption isotherms of methane on Zeolite Y. From these data, an empirical reference equation was determined, along with a 95% uncertainty interval (Uk=2). By requiring participants to replicate a high-pressure reference isotherm for carbon dioxide adsorption on NIST Reference Material RM 8852 (ZSM-5), this interlaboratory study also demonstrated the usefulness of reference isotherms in evaluating the performance of high-pressure adsorption experiments.

MOF-Based Polymeric Nanocomposite Films as Potential Materials for Drug Delivery Devices in Ocular Therapeutics

Novel MOF-based polymer nanocomposite films were successfully prepared using Zr-based UiO-67 as a metal-organic framework (MOF) and polyurethane (PU) as a polymeric matrix. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) analysis confirms the improved stability of the UiO-67 embedded nanocrystals, and scanning electron microscopy images confirm their homogeneous distribution (average crystal size ∼100-200 nm) within the 50 μm thick film. Accessibility to the inner porous structure of the embedded MOFs was completely suppressed for N₂ at cryogenic temperatures. However, ethylene adsorption measurements at 25 °C confirm that at least 45% of the MOF crystals are fully accessible for gas-phase adsorption of nonpolar molecules. Although this partial blockage limits the adsorption performance of the embedded MOFs for ocular drugs (e.g., brimonidine tartrate) compared to the pure MOF, an almost 60-fold improvement in the adsorption capacity was observed for the PU matrix after incorporation of the UiO-67 nanocrystals. The UiO-67@PU nanocomposite exhibits a prolonged release of brimonidine (up to 14 days were quantified). Finally, the combined use of SXRPD, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses confirmed the presence of the drug in the nanocomposite film, the stability of the MOF framework and the drug upon loading, and the presence of brimonidine in an amorphous phase once adsorbed. These results open the gate toward the application of these polymeric nanocomposite films for drug delivery in ocular therapeutics, either as a component of a contact lens, in the composition of lacrimal stoppers (e.g., punctal plugs), or in subtenon inserts.

Design of a Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework System for Enhanced Targeted Delivery to Mitochondria

Mitochondria play a key role in oncogenesis and constitute one of the most important targets for cancer treatments. Although the most effective way to deliver drugs to mitochondria is by covalently linking them to a lipophilic cation, the in vivo delivery of free drugs still constitutes a critical bottleneck. Herein, we report the design of a mitochondria-targeted metal-organic framework (MOF) that greatly increases the efficacy of a model cancer drug, reducing the required dose to less than 1% compared to the free drug and ca. 10% compared to the nontargeted MOF. The performance of the system is evaluated using a holistic approach ranging from microscopy to transcriptomics. Super-resolution microscopy of MCF-7 cells treated with the targeted MOF system reveals important mitochondrial morphology changes that are clearly associated with cell death as soon as 30 min after incubation. Whole transcriptome analysis of cells indicates widespread changes in gene expression when treated with the MOF system, specifically in biological processes that have a profound effect on cell physiology and that are related to cell death. We show how targeting MOFs toward mitochondria represents a valuable strategy for the development of new drug delivery systems.

Tuning porosity in macroscopic monolithic metal-organic frameworks for exceptional natural gas storage

Widespread access to greener energy is required in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. A significant barrier to cleaner natural gas usage lies in the safety/efficiency limitations of storage technology. Despite highly porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrating record-breaking gas-storage capacities, their conventionally powdered morphology renders them non-viable. Traditional powder shaping utilising high pressure or chemical binders collapses porosity or creates low-density structures with reduced volumetric adsorption capacity. Here, we report the engineering of one of the most stable MOFs, Zr-UiO-66, without applying pressure or binders. The process yields centimetre-sized monoliths, displaying high microporosity and bulk density. We report the inclusion of variable, narrow mesopore volumes to the monoliths’ macrostructure and use this to optimise the pore-size distribution for gas uptake. The optimised mixed meso/microporous monoliths demonstrate Type II adsorption isotherms to achieve benchmark volumetric working capacities for methane and carbon dioxide. This represents a critical advance in the design of air-stable, conformed MOFs for commercial gas storage.

While metal–organic frameworks exhibit record-breaking gas storage capacities, their typically powdered form hinders their industrial applicability. Here, the authors engineer UiO-66 into centimetre-sized monoliths with optimal pore-size distributions, achieving benchmark volumetric working capacities for both CH₄ and CO₂.

A sol-gel monolithic metal-organic framework with enhanced methane uptake

A critical bottleneck for the use of natural gas as a transportation fuel has been the development of materials capable of storing it in a sufficiently compact form at ambient temperature. Here we report the synthesis of a porous monolithic metal-organic framework (MOF), which after successful packing and densification reaches 259 cm³ (STP) cm^-3 capacity. This is the highest value reported to date for conformed shape porous solids, and represents a greater than 50% improvement over any previously reported experimental value. Nanoindentation tests on the monolithic MOF showed robust mechanical properties, with hardness at least 130% greater than that previously measured in its conventional MOF counterparts. Our findings represent a substantial step in the application of mechanically robust conformed and densified MOFs for high volumetric energy storage and other industrial applications.

Synthesis, Morphostructure, Surface Chemistry and Preclinical Studies of Nanoporous Rice Husk-Derived Biochars for Gastrointestinal Detoxification

This article summarizes the methodology of synthesis, surface functionalization and structural properties of rice husk-derived nanostructured carbon enterosorbents (biochars) in connection with the preliminary in vitro study results of uraemic toxin adsorption in model experiments, as well as preclinical trials in vivo. The obtained nanostructured carbon sorbents were studied using a number of modern physicochemical methods of investigation: low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, isotherms recording and calculation of the specific surface area, pore volumes were carried out using the Autosorb-1 "Quantachrome" device. Scanning electron microscopy and EDS-analysis. Mercury intrusion porosimetry analysis of the ACs were accomplished using "Quantachrome Poremaster" data analysis software. In vitro adsorption results assessed by use of HPLC and UV-spectroscopy for the nanostructured carbon sorbents with respect to the investigated low-molecule toxins suggest that the rice husks-derived carbon enterosorbents modified with the functional groups are able to reduce clinically significant levels of uraemic toxins and are comparable to the commercial enterosorbents. Based on the results of the comparative analysis for biocompatibility of canine kidney epithelial cells it was determined that the samples of the modified sorbents CRH-P-450 and CRH-475-KOH-850-N do not exhibit cytotoxicity in comparison with the commercial carbon enterosorbent «Adsorbix Extra». According to the results of the in vivo studies, it was determined that there was a positive effect of the enterosorbent CRH-P-450 on uremia and intoxication.

Gate-opening effect in ZIF-8: the first experimental proof using inelastic neutron scattering

Gate-opening effect. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments show that nitrogen exposure induces the swinging of the –CH₃ groups and the imidazolate linkers in ZIF-8, this being the origin of the gate-opening effect.

Improved mechanical stability of HKUST-1 in confined nanospace

Confinement of HKUST-1 in the cavities of a specially designed activated carbon allows us to improve the mechanical stability of the hybrid system, MOF@AC, while preserving the excellent adsorption properties of the parent MOF.

Use of eutectic mixtures for preparation of monolithic carbons with CO₂-adsorption and gas-separation capabilities

With global warming becoming one of the main problems our society is facing nowadays, there is an urgent demand to develop materials suitable for CO2 storage as well as for gas separation. Within this context, hierarchical porous structures are of great interest for in-flow applications because of the desirable combination of an extensive internal reactive surface along narrow nanopores with facile molecular transport through broad "highways" leading to and from these pores. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been recently used in the synthesis of carbon monoliths exhibiting a bicontinuous porous structure composed of continuous macroporous channels and a continuous carbon network that contains a certain microporosity and provides considerable surface area. In this work, we have prepared two DESs for the preparation of two hierarchical carbon monoliths with different compositions (e.g., either nitrogen-doped or not) and structure. It is worth noting that DESs played a capital role in the synthesis of hierarchical carbon monoliths not only promoting the spinodal decomposition that governs the formation of the bicontinuous porous structure but also providing the precursors required to tailor the composition and the molecular sieve structure of the resulting carbons. We have studied the performance of these two carbons for CO2, N2, and CH4 adsorption in both monolithic and powdered form. We have also studied the selective adsorption of CO2 versus CH4 in equilibrium and dynamic conditions. We found that these materials combined a high CO2-sorption capacity besides an excellent CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 selectivity and, interestingly, this performance was preserved when processed in both monolithic and powdered form.

Immersion calorimetry as a tool to evaluate the catalytic performance of titanosilicate materials in the epoxidation of cyclohexene

Different types of titanosilicates are synthesized, structurally characterized, and subsequently catalytically tested in the liquid-phase epoxidation of cyclohexene. The performance of three types of combined zeolitic/mesoporous materials is compared with that of widely studied Ti-grafted-MCM-41 molecular sieve and the TS-1 microporous titanosilicate. The catalytic test results are correlated with the structural characteristics of the different catalysts. Moreover, for the first time, immersion calorimetry with the same substrate molecule as in the catalytic test reaction is applied as an extra means to interpret the catalytic results. A good correlation between catalytic performance and immersion calorimetry results is found. This work points out that the combination of catalytic testing and immersion calorimetry can lead to important insights into the influence of the materials structural characteristics on catalysis. Moreover, the potential of using immersion calorimetry as a screening tool for catalysts in epoxidation reactions is shown.

From Pd nanoparticles to single crystals: 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation on well-defined model catalysts

Although 1,3-butadiene hydrogenation is known to be a structure-sensitive reaction, correlation of the catalytic activity with the exact Pd particle surface structure shows that the reaction is in fact particle size independent.
