Abstract
New 1,2-azolylamidino complexes fac-[RuCl(DMSO)3(NHC(R)az*-κ2N,N)]OTf [R = Me (2), Ph (3); az* = pz (pyrazolyl, a), indz (indazolyl, b)] are synthesized via chloride abstraction from their corresponding precursors cis,fac-[RuCl2(DMSO)3(az*H)] (1) after subsequent base-catalyzed coupling of the appropriate nitrile with the 1,2-azole previously coordinated. All the compounds are characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. Those derived from MeCN are also characterized by X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed several reduction waves in the range of -1.5 to -3 V. The electrochemical behavior in CO2 media is consistent with CO2 electrocatalytic reduction. The catalytic activity expressed as [icat(CO2)/ip(Ar)] ranged from 1.7 to 3.7 for the 1,2-azolylamidino complexes at voltages of ca. -2.7 to -3 V vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium. Controlled potential electrolysis showed rapid decomposition of the Ru catalysts. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction experiments using compounds 1b, 2b and 3b carried out in a CO2-saturated MeCN/TEOA (4 : 1 v/v) solution containing a mixture of the catalyst and [Ru(bipy)3]2+ as the photosensitizer under continuous irradiation (light intensity of 150 mW cm-2 at 25 °C, λ > 300 nm) show that compounds 1b, 2b and 3b allowed CO2 reduction catalysis, producing CO and trace amounts of formate. The combined turnover number for the production of formate and CO is ca. 100 after 8 h and follows the order 1b < 2b ≈ 3b.

Abstract
Six new pyrazolylamidino Cu(II) complexes are synthesized directly from the reactions of Cu(X)2 salts (X = ClO4-, BF4-, or Cl-) and pyrazole (pzH) in nitrile solution (RCN, R = Me or Et) at 298 K via the metal-mediated coupling of RCN with pzH: [Cu(HNC(R)pz)2(X)2] (X = ClO4- or BF4-, R = Me, 1 or 7 and Et, 2 or 8, respectively) and dichloro Cu(II) complexes [Cu2Cl2(μ-Cl)2(HNC(Me)pz)2] (3) and [CuCl2(HNC(Et)pz)] (4). Four more new complexes, [Cu2(μ-Cl)2(HNC(Me)pz)2(pzH)2][X]2 (X = ClO4-, 5 and BF4-, 9) and [Cu2(μ-Cl)2(HNC(Et)pz)2(pzH)2(X)2] (X = ClO4-, 6 and BF4-, 10), are obtained indirectly from the anion substitution reaction with Cl- ions in 1 and 7, and 2 and 8, respectively. All complexes are characterized by EA, FTIR, UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallographic analyses. HNC(Et)pz or pzH is unobserved in both the nitrile-exchange reaction of 2 to d6-1 and the anion-substitution reaction of 2 to d6-5 in the CD3CN solution. The 1H NMR results reveal that the pzH-RCN coupling is intramolecular and reversible on a Cu(II) center. The crystal structures of these complexes show diverse supramolecular assemblies through imino NH⋯anion hydrogen bonds and pyrazolylamidino pz-pz (π⋯π) and pz-Cu(II) (π⋯metal) interactions. EPR results suggest weak magnetic couplings between Cu(II) centers in the polynuclear Cu(II) complexes. The yield and rate of the formation of 1 are higher in the reaction of Cu(ClO4)2 with a 4-fold molar excess of pzH compared with a 2-fold excess, indicating that [Cu(pzH)4]2+ is the more active species for pzH-RCN coupling. The highest rate for the formation of 1 is achieved when [Cu(pzH)4(ClO4)2] is used in MeCN solution. Thus, a plausible synthetic path for synthesizing pyrazolylamidino Cu(II) complexes is established. An intermediate species, [Cu(HNC(Me)pz)2(pzH)2][ClO4]2 (1a), is proposed for the synthetic process based on spectroscopic studies and DFT calculations. The reaction of [Cu(pzH)4X2] (X = ClO4-, Cl-, NO3-, or BF4-) in MeCN solution suggests that the lability of coordinated anions upon nitrile substitution affects the rate of the formation of bis-pyrazolylamidino Cu(II) complexes.

Abstract
The chemistry of the rhenium trihydrido complex [ReH3 (PPh3 )4 ] (1) has been reinvestigated. An improved synthesis and the solid-state structure of the compound as well as several reactions are reported. The solid-state structure of 1 is similar to that of [TcH3 (PPh3 )4 ] having a capped-octahedral coordination sphere. The PPh3 ligands surround the Re atom in a trigonal-pyramidal mode with a short apical Re-P bond (2.300(2) Å) and three longer basal bonds (2.429(2)-2.449(2) Å). Reactions of 1 with monodentate phosphines such as PMe3 or PBu3 give the mono-substituted complexes [ReH3 (PPh3 )3 (PMe3 )] (2) and [ReH3 (PPh3 )3 (PBu3 )] (3) under retention of the apical PPh3 ligand and substitution of one of the basal PPh3 ligands. The stability of the phosphine trihydride complexes decreases in the order PPh3 >PMe3 >PBu3 . Treatment of [ReH3 (PPh3 )4 ] with trityl hexafluorophosphate in CH3 CN does not result in a hydride abstraction, but gives the tetrahydrido cation [ReH4 (NCCH3 )(PPh3 )3 ]+ (4), while reactions with nitriles give unstable azavinylidene complexes of the composition [ReH2 (PPh3 )3 (NC(H)R)] (5). They are formed by an insertion of the nitrile into a Re-H bond. The solid-state structure of the methyl derivative [ReH2 (PPh3 )3 (NC(H)CH3 )] (5 a) was determined showing a linear Re-N-C unit with rhenium-nitrogen and nitrogen-carbon double bonds, while the N=CH-C bond is clearly bent with an angle of 124°. Two previously unknown polymorphs of [ReH5 (PPh3 )3 ] were isolated from reactions of 1 with HOC6 H3 (CH3 )2 and thiourea after prolonged heating in toluene and characterized by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
Tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes that incorporate a chloride ligand are promising photoluminescent materials, but those incorporating a bromide or iodide ligand have received very little attention regarding their solid-state properties. In this work, three rhenium(I) complexes differing only by the nature of their halide ligand (X = Cl, Br, and I) were compared. They are based on a fac-[ReX(CO)3(N^N)] framework where the N^N bidentate ligand is a 3-(2-pyridyl)-1,2,4-triazole unit functionalized by an appended phenyl group. DFT calculations showed that the character of the lowest energy transitions progressively changes from Re → N^N ligand (MLCT) to X → N^N ligand (XLCT) when increasing the size of the halogen atom. Regarding the electrochemical behavior, the chloride and bromide complexes 1-Cl and 1-Br were similar, while the iodide complex 1-I exhibited a strikingly different electrochemical signature in oxidation. From a spectroscopic viewpoint, all three complexes emitted weak red-orange phosphorescence in dichloromethane solution. However, in the solid state, marked differences appeared. Not only was 1-Cl a good emitter of yellow light, but it had strong solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE) properties. In comparison, 1-Br and 1-I were less emissive and they showed better mechanoresponsive luminescence (MRL) properties, probably related to a loose molecular arrangement in the crystal packing and to the opening of vibrational non-radiative deactivation pathways. This study highlights for the first time how the nature of the halide ligand in this type of complex allows fine tuning of the solid-state optical properties, for potential applications either in bio-imaging or in the field of MRL-active materials.

Abstract
The selective photoreactions under mild conditions play an important role in synthetic chemistry. Herein, efficient and mild protocols for switching the photoreactions of Ir(III)-diamine complexes between the interligand C-N coupling and dehydrogenation are developed in the presence of O2 in EtOH solution. The photoreactions of achiral diamine complexes rac-[Ir(L)2(dm)](PF6) (L is 2-phenylquinoline or 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)quinoline, dm is 1,2-ethylenediamine, 1,2-diaminopropane, 2-methyl-1,2-diamino-propane, or N,N'-dimethyl-1,2-ethylenediamine) are competitive in the oxidative C-N coupling and dehydrogenation at room temperature, which can be switched into the interligand C-N coupling reaction at 60 °C, affording hexadentate complexes in good to excellent yields, or the dehydrogenative reaction in the presence of a catalytic amount of TEMPO as an additive, affording imine complexes. Mechanism studies reveal that 1O2 is the major reactive oxygen species, and metal aminyl is the key intermediate in the formation of the oxidative C-N coupling and imine products in the photoreaction processes. These will provide a new and practical protocol for the synthesis of multidentate and imine ligands in situ via the postcoordinated strategy under mild conditions.

Abstract
Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) by transition-metal catalysts is an attractive means for storing renewably sourced electricity in chemical bonds. Metal coordination compounds represent highly tunable platforms ideal for studying the fundamental stepwise transformations of CO2 into its reduced products. However, metal complexes can decompose upon extended electrolysis and form chemically distinct molecular species or, in some cases, catalytically active electrode deposits. Deciphering the degradative pathways is important for understanding the nature of the active catalyst and designing robust metal complexes for small-molecule activation. Herein, we present a new dicationic rhenium bipyridyl complex capable of multielectron ligand-centered reductions electrochemically. Our in-depth experimental and computational study provides mechanistic insight into an unusual reductively induced Hoffman-type elimination. We identify benzylic tertiary ammonium groups as an electrolytically susceptible moiety and propose key intermediates in the degradative pathway. This investigation highlights the complex interplay between the ligand and metal ion and will guide the future design of metal-organic catalysts.

Abstract
The bis(pyridylimino)isoindoline (BPI) ligand is a tridentate chelate that binds to metals via a meridional coordination mode. However, when this ligand forms a complex with Re(CO)3, an almost exclusively facial moiety, the BPI ligand deforms to coordinate in a facial mode. We have in-vestigated this deformation via structural and theoretical means, and the non-planar binding mode of the ligand bathochromically shifts the metal to ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition.

Abstract
New 1,2-azolylamidino complexes cis-[Ru(bipy)2(NH═C(R)az*-κ2N,N)](OTf)2 (R = Me, Ph; az* = pz, indz, dmpz) are synthesized via chloride abstraction after a subsequent base-catalyzed coupling of a nitrile with the previously coordinated 1,2-azole. The synthetic procedure allows the easy obtainment of complexes having different electronic and steric 1,2-azoylamidino ligands. All of the compounds have been characterized by 1H, 13C, and 15N NMR and IR spectroscopy and by monocrystal X-ray diffraction. Photophysical studies support their phosphorescence, whereas their electrochemistry reveals reversible RuII/RuIII oxidations between +1.13 and +1.25 V (vs SCE). The complexes have been successfully used as catalysts in the photooxidation of different thioethers, the complex cis-[Ru(bipy)2(NH═C(Me)dmpz-κ2N,N)]2+ showing better catalytic performance in comparison to that of [Ru(bipy)3]2+. Moreover, the significant catalytic performance of the dimethylpyrazolylamidino complex is applied to the preparation of the drug modafinil, which is obtained using ambient oxygen as an oxidant. Finally, mechanistic assays suggest that the oxidation reaction follows a photoredox route via oxygen radical anion formation.

Abstract
The chiral-recognition processes of homoproline (hpro) and [Ir(pq)2(MeCN)2](PF6) (pq is 2-phenylquinoline; MeCN is acetonitrile) are investigated, in favor of formation of the thermodynamically stable diastereomers Λ-[Ir(pq)2(d-hpro)] and Δ-[Ir(pq)2(l-hpro)]. Moreover, the diastereoselective photoreactions of Δ-[Ir(pq)2(d-hpro)] and Δ-[Ir(pq)2(l-hpro)] are reported in the presence of O2 at room temperature. Diastereomer Δ-[Ir(pq)2(l-hpro)] is dehydrogenatively oxidized into imino acid complex Δ-[Ir(pq)2(hpro-2H2)] (hpro-2H2 is 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropicalinate), while diastereomer Δ-[Ir(pq)2(d-hpro)] occurs by interligand C-N cross-coupling and dehydrogenative oxidation reactions, affording three products: Δ-[Ir(pq)(d-pqh)] [pqh is N-(2-phenylquinolin-8-yl)homoproline], Δ-[Ir(pq)2(hpro-2H2)], and Δ-[Ir(pq)2(d-hpro-2H6)] [hpro-2H6 is 2,3,4,5-tetrahydropicalinate]. The C-N cross-coupling and dehydrogenative oxidation reactions are competitive, and the dehydrogenative oxidation reactions are regioselective. By optimization of the photoreaction parameters such as the diastereomeric substrate, solvent, and temperature as well as base, each possible competitive product is selectively controlled. In addition, density functional theory calculations are performed to elucidate the distinctly chiral recognition between proline and hpro with an iridium(III) complex.

Abstract
The ground- and excited-state properties of three novel complexes [ReCl(CO)3(Ln-κ2N)] bearing 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, 2,6-di(thiazol-2-yl)pyridine and 2,6-di(pyrazin-2-yl)pyridine functionalized with 9-carbazole attached to the central pyridine ring of the triimine core via phenylene linkage were investigated by spectroscopic and electrochemical methods and were simulated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT. To get a deeper and broader understanding of structure-property relationships, the designed Re(i) carbonyl complexes were compared with previously reported analogous systems - without any groups attached to the phenyl ring and bearing pyrrolidine instead of 9-carbazole. The results indicated that attachment of the N-carbazolyl substituent to the triimine core has less influence on the nature of the triplet excited state of [ReCl(CO)3(Ln-κ2N)] than the pyrrolidine group. Additionally, the impact of the ligand structural modifications on the light emission of the Re(i) complexes under external voltage was preliminarily examined with electroluminescence spectra of diodes containing the synthesized new molecules in an active layer.

Abstract
The reaction of [Re(CO)3(THF)(μ-Br)]2 or [Re(CO)5X] (X = Cl, Br, I) with the diaryl-2-azabutadienes [(RS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CAr2] containing two thioether arms at the 4,4-position forms the luminescent S,N-chelate complexes fac-[(OC)3ReX{(RS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CAr2}] (1a-h). The halide abstraction by silver triflate converts [(OC)3ReCl{(PhS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2}] (1c) to [(OC)3Re(OS([double bond, length as m-dash]O)2CF3){(PhS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2}] (1j) bearing a covalently bound triflate ligand. The cyclic voltammograms reveal reversible S^N ligand-centred reduction and irreversible oxidation waves for all complexes. The crystal structures of nine octahedral complexes have been determined along with that of (NaphtylS)2C[double bond, length as m-dash]C(H)-N[double bond, length as m-dash]CPh2 (L6). A rich system of weak non-covalent intermolecular secondary interactions through CHX(Cl, Br)Re, CHO, COπ(Ph), CHπCO, CHO and CHS contacts has been evidenced. The photophysical properties have been investigated by steady-state and time-resolved absorption (fs transient absorption, fs-TAS) and emission (ns-TCSPC and ps-Streak camera) spectroscopy in 2-MeTHF solution at 298 and 77 K. The emission bands are composed of either singlet (450 < λmax < 535 nm) and/or triplet emissions (at 77 K only, λmax < 640 nm, or appearing as a tail at λ > 600 nm), which decay in a multiexponential manner for the fluorescence (short ps (i.e. <IRF) < τF < 1.9 ns at 298 and 77 K) and monoexponentially for the phosphorescence (4.0 < τP < 7.0 ns at 77 K). The fs-TAS data reveal the presence of 2 to 4 transient species decaying in four narrow time windows (generally 125-165 fs, 370-685 fs, 3-6 ps, 30-45 ps). The complexity of these kinetics was explained by studying the photophysical behaviour of ligand L6. Its behaviour is the same as the complexes thus indicating that the ligand dictates the kinetic traits of the Re-species, except for the triplet emission as L6 is not phosphorescent. The triplet lifetime (4.0 < τP < 7.0 ns) is considered very short but not unprecedented. Furthermore, the nature of the lowest energy excited states of these chelate compounds and L6 has been addressed using DFT and TDDFT calculations and been assigned to metal-to-ligand (MLCT) and/or intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT).

Abstract
New cis-(1,2-azole)-aquo bis(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (1,2-azole (az*H) = pzH (pyrazole), dmpzH (3,5-dimethylpyrazole), and indzH (indazole)) complexes are synthesized via chlorido abstraction from cis-[Ru(bipy)2Cl(az*H)]OTf. The latter are obtained from cis-[Ru(bipy)2Cl2] after the subsequent coordination of the 1,2-azole. All the compounds are characterized by 1H, 13C, 15N NMR spectroscopy as well as IR spectroscopy. Two chlorido complexes (pzH and indzH) and two aquo complexes (indzH and dmpzH) are also characterized by X-ray diffraction. Photophysical and electrochemical studies were carried out on all the complexes. The photophysical data support the phosphorescence of the complexes. The electrochemical behavior of all the complexes in an Ar atmosphere indicate that the oxidation processes assigned to Ru(II) → Ru(III) occurs at higher potentials in the aquo complexes. The reduction processes under Ar lead to several waves, indicating that the complexes undergo successive electron-transfer reductions that are centered in the bipy ligands. The first electron reduction is reversible. The electrochemical behavior in CO2 media is consistent with CO2 electrocatalyzed reduction, where the values of the catalytic activity [icat(CO2)/ip(Ar)] ranged from 2.9 to 10.8. Controlled potential electrolysis of the chlorido and aquo complexes affords CO and formic acid, with the latter as the major product after 2 h. Photocatalytic experiments in MeCN with [Ru(bipy)3]Cl2 as the photosensitizer and TEOA as the electron donor, which were irradiated with >300 nm light for 24 h, led to CO and HCOOH as the main reduction products, achieving a combined turnover number (TONCO+HCOO-) as high as 107 for 2c after 24 h of irradiation.

Abstract
The postcoordinated interligand-coupling strategy provides a useful and complementary protocol for synthesizing polydentate ligands. Herein, diastereoselective photoreactions of Λ-[Ir(pq)2(d-AA)] (Λ-d) and Λ-[Ir(pq)2(l-AA)] (Λ-l, where pq is 2-phenylquinoline and AA is an amino acid) are reported in the presence of O2 under mild conditions. Diastereomer Λ-d is dehydrogenatively oxidized into an imino acid complex, while diastereomer Λ-l mainly occurs via interligand C-N cross-dehydrogenative coupling between quinoline at the C8 position and AA ligands at room temperature, affording Λ-[Ir(pq)(l-pq-AA)]. Furthermore, the photoreaction of diastereomer Λ-l is temperature-dependent. Mechanistic experiments reveal the ligand-radical intermediates may be involved in the reaction. Density functional theory calculations were used to eluciate the origin of diastereoselectivity and temperature dependence. This will provide a new protocol for the amination of quinoline at the C8 position via the postcoordinated interligand C-N cross-coupling strategy under mild conditions.

Abstract
The aquation reactions of four rhenium(I) dicarbonyl complexes, [Re(CO)2(NN)(PR3)(Cl)], where NN = 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen) and 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (DMPhen) and PR3 = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) and 1,4-diacetyl-1,3,7-triaza-5-phosphabicylco[3.3.1]nonane (DAPTA). Additionally, the anation reactions of the corresponding aqua complexes with Cl- were investigated. Single crystals of [Re(CO)2(DMPhen)(PTA)(Cl)]·DMF and [Re(CO)2(DMPhen)(DAPTA)(Cl)] were obtained, and their structures were determined using X-ray diffraction. The Re-Cl interatomic distances are 2.4991(13) and 2.4922(6) Å, respectively, indicating a mild trans influence effect of the phosphine ligands. The rate constants, kaq, for the aquation reactions of these complexes spanned a range of (3.7 ± 0.3) × 10-4 to (15.7 ± 0.3) × 10-4 s-1 with the two Phen complexes having rate constants that are 2.5 times greater than those of the DMPhen complexes at 298 K. Similarly, the second-order anation rate constants (kCl) of the resulting aqua complexes, [Re(CO)2(NN)(PR3)(H2O)]+, with Cl- ions at 298 K varied between (2.99 ± 0.05) × 10-3 and (6.79 ± 0.09) × 10-3 M-1 s-1. Likewise, these rate constants for the Phen complexes were almost 2 times faster than those of the DMPhen complexes. The pKa values of the four aqua complexes were determined to be greater than 9.0 for all of the complexes with [Re(CO)2(Phen)(PTA)(H2O)]+ having the highest pKa value of 9.28 ± 0.03. From the pKa values and the ratios of the aquation and anation rate contants, which give thermodynamic Cl- binding constants, the speciation of the rhenium(I) complexes in blood plasma, the cytoplasm, and the cell nucleus were estimated. The data suggest that the aqua complexes would be the dominant species in all three environments. This result may have important implications on the potential biological activity of these complexes.

Abstract
Cationic fac-[Re(CO)3(pz*H)(pypzH)]OTf (pz*H = pyrazole, pzH; 3,5-dimethylpyrazole, dmpzH; indazole, indzH; 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole, pypzH) were obtained from fac-[ReBr(CO)3(pypzH)] by halide abstraction with AgOTf and subsequent addition of the corresponding pyrazole. Successive deprotonation with Na2CO3 and NaOH gave neutral fac-[Re(CO)3(pz*H)(pypz)] and anionic Na{fac-[Re(CO)3(pz*)(pypz)]} complexes, respectively. Cationic fac-[Re(CO)3(pz*H)(pypzH)]OTf, neutral complexes fac-[Re(CO)3(pz*H)(pypz)], and fac-[Re(CO)3(pypz)2Na] were subjected to photophysical and electrochemical studies. They exhibit phosphorescent decays from a prevalently 3MLCT excited state with quantum yields (Φ) in the range between 0.03 and 0.58 and long lifetimes (τ from 220 to 869 ns). The electrochemical behavior in Ar atmosphere of cationic and neutral complexes indicates that the oxidation processes assigned to ReI → ReII occurs at lower potentials for the neutral complex compared to cationic complex. The reduction processes occur at the ligands and do not depend on the charge of the complexes. The electrochemical behavior in CO2 saturated media is consistent with CO2 electrocatalyzed reduction, where the values of the catalytic activity [icat(CO2)/icat(Ar)] ranged from 2.7 to 11.5 (compared to 8.1 for fac-[Re(CO)3Cl(bipy)] studied as a reference). Controlled potential electrolysis for the pyrazole cationic (3a) and neutral (4a) complexes after 1 h affords CO in faraday yields of 61 and 89%, respectively. These values are higher for indazole complexes and may be related to the acidity of the coordinated pyrazole.
