Functionalized graphene nanomaterials: new insight into direct exfoliation of graphite with supramolecular polymers

Zinc Oxide/Carbon Material-Embedded Supramolecular Drug Delivery System with Photoswitching Properties for Highly Selective and Effective Chemotherapy

Phototherapy has become a hopeful procedure for the treatment of cancer. Nevertheless, the straightforward creation of a theranostic system that can achieve both tumor localization and production of oxygen species is greatly desired yet remains a challenging endeavor. In this study, we synthesized spherical nanostructures by decorating zinc oxide (ZnO) with peanut shell-based carbon (PNS-C) in an aqueous solution. The PNS-C-decorated ZnO (ZnO/PNS-C)-embedded supramolecular system exhibited spontaneous self-assembly. The nanogels that are produced have several desirable characteristics, including exceptional resistance to degradation by light, highly stable nanostructures that form spontaneously in biological environments, outstanding ability to prevent the destruction of red blood cells, and a high level of sensitivity to changes in pH and light. Under light irradiation, the addition of ZnO/PNS-C-incorporated supramolecular provided high reactive oxygen species production. Moreover, in vitro cellular assays demonstrated ZnO/PNS-C-incorporated supramolecular exhibited highly selective and induced phototoxicity into cancer cells and no effect on the viability of normal cells both before and after irradiation. Overall, the ZnO/PNS-C-incorporated supramolecular system has the potential to stimulate advancements in phototherapy by utilizing highly tumor-selective therapeutic molecules. This can lead to a more effective targeted therapy for cancers.

Hydrogen Bond Strength-Mediated Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Nanogels for Selective and Effective Cancer Treatment

This study provides a significant contribution to the development of multiple hydrogen-bonded supramolecular nanocarrier systems by demonstrating that controlling the hydrogen bond strength within supramolecular polymers represents a crucial factor to tailor the drug delivery performance and enhance the effectiveness of cancer therapy. Herein, we successfully developed two kinds of poly(ethylene glycol)-based telechelic polymers Cy-PEG and UrCy-PEG having self-constituted double and quadruple hydrogen-bonding cytosine (Cy) and ureido-cytosine (UrCy) end-capped groups, respectively, which directly assemble into spherical nanogels with a number of interesting physical characteristics in aqueous solutions. The UrCy-PEG nanogels containing quadruple hydrogen-bonded UrCy dimers exhibited excellent long-term structural stability in a serum-containing biological medium, whereas the double hydrogen-bonded Cy moieties could not maintain the structural integrity of the Cy-PEG nanogels. More importantly, after the drug encapsulation process, a series of in vitro experiments clearly confirmed that drug-loaded UrCy-PEG nanogels induced selective apoptotic cell death in cancer cells without causing significant cytotoxicity to healthy cells, while drug-loaded Cy-PEG nanogels exerted nonselective cytotoxicity toward both cancer and normal cells, indicating that increasing the strength of hydrogen bonds in nanogels plays a key role in enhancing the selective cellular uptake and cytotoxicity of drugs and the subsequent induction of apoptosis in cancer cells.

Facile synthesis of Pd@graphene nanocomposites with enhanced catalytic activity towards Suzuki coupling reaction

A facile and chemical specific method to synthesize highly reduced graphene oxide (HRG) and Pd (HRG@Pd) nanocomposite is presented. The HRG surfaces are tailored with amine groups using 1-aminopyrene (1-AP) as functionalizing molecules. The aromatic rings of 1-AP sit on the basal planes of HRG through π-π interactions, leaving amino groups outwards (similar like self-assembled monolayer on 2D substrates). The amino groups provide the chemically specific binding sites to the Pd nucleation which subsequently grow into nanoparticles. HRG@Pd nanocomposite demonstrated both uniform distribution of Pd nanoparticles on HRG surface as well as excellent physical stability and dispersibility. The surface functionalization was confirmed using, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infra-red and Raman spectroscopy. The size and distribution of Pd nanoparticles on the HRG and crystallinity were confirmed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and powder X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The catalytic efficiency of highly reduced graphene oxide-pyrene-palladium nanocomposite (HRG-Py-Pd) is tested towards the Suzuki coupling reactions of various aryl halides. The kinetics of the catalytic reaction (Suzuki coupling) using HRG-Py-Pd nanocomposite was monitored using gas chromatography (GC).

Efficient exfoliation of UV-curable, high-quality graphene from graphite in common low-boiling-point organic solvents with a designer hyperbranched polyethylene copolymer and their applications in electrothermal heaters

The use of stabilizer with designer structures can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in common solvents to render functionalized graphene desirable for their various applications. Herein, a hyperbranched polyethylene copolymer, HBPE@Py@Acryl, simultaneously bearing multiple pyrene terminal groups and pendant acryloyl moieties has been successfully synthesized from ethylene with a Pd-diimine catalyst based on unique chain walking mechanism. The unique structural design of the HBPE@Py@Acryl makes it capable of effectively promote graphite exfoliation in a series of common, low-boiling-point organic solvents, e.g. CHCl₃, to render stable graphene dispersions with concentrations effectively adjustable by changing feed concentrations of graphite and polymer or sonication time. Meanwhile, it can be irreversibly adsorbed on the exfoliated graphene surface based on the π-π interactions between them to concurrently render acryloyl-functionalized graphene free of structural defects, with majority (92.7%) of them having a thickness of 2-3 layers. This allows us to obtain graphene electrothermal films simply by filtration and UV irradiation, which exhibit outstanding stability in use. The action mechanism of the HBPE@Py@Acryl as stabilizer for promoting graphite exfoliation and the role of UV irradiation on improving the stability in use of resulting graphene films have been elucidated.

Dual stimuli-responsive supramolecular boron nitride with tunable physical properties for controlled drug delivery

The new concept of modifying and tailoring the properties of existing two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials by invoking the assembly of supramolecular networks upon association with a adenine-functionalized macromer (A-PPG) has significant potential to facilitate the development of highly water-dispersible few-layered 2D nanosheets. In this study, we propose that water-soluble A-PPG directly self-assembles into a long-period stacking-ordered lamellar structure over the surface of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) in aqueous solution, due to the efficient non-covalent interactions between A-PPG and BN nanosheets. The layer number of BN nanosheets can be easily tuned by altering the mass ratio of the A-PPG and BN blend, and the resulting exfoliated nanosheets also exhibit excellent temperature/pH-responsive behavior, biocompatibility and extremely high drug-loading capacity (up to 36.2%), features that are highly desirable yet exceedingly rare in traditional 2D nanomaterials. Importantly, in vitro drug release studies showed the drug-loaded nanosheets function as a stable nanocarrier with excellent stability and drug entrapment under normal physiological conditions. Increasing the environmental temperature to 40 °C or decreasing the pH to 5.5 triggered rapid release of the encapsulated drug from the drug-loaded nanosheets, suggesting this newly developed material has potential as a novel multi-responsive 2D nanocarrier to safely deliver drugs and effectively facilitate controlled drug release under specific microenvironmental conditions. This study provides new insight towards the promising application of this system in controlled release drug delivery systems.

Dynamic tungsten diselenide nanomaterials: supramolecular assembly-induced structural transition over exfoliated two-dimensional nanosheets

A simple and effective method for direct exfoliation of tungsten diselenide (WSe₂) into few-layered nanosheets has been successfully developed by employing a low molecular weight adenine-functionalized supramolecular polymer (A-PPG). In this study, we discover A-PPG can self-assemble into a long-range, ordered lamellar microstructure on the surface of WSe₂ due to the efficient non-covalent interactions between A-PPG and WSe₂. Morphological and light scattering studies confirmed the dynamic self-assembly behavior of A-PPG has the capacity to efficiently manipulate the transition between contractile and extended lamellar microstructures on the surface of metallic 1T-phase and semiconducting 2H-phase WSe₂ nanosheets, respectively. The extent of WSe₂ exfoliation can be easily controlled by systematically adjusting the amount of A-PPG in the composites, to obtain nanocomposites with the desired functional characteristics. In addition, the resulting composites possess unique liquid–solid phase transition behavior and excellent thermoreversible properties, revealing the self-assembled lamellar structure of A-PPG functions as a critical factor to manipulate and tailor the physical properties of exfoliated WSe₂. This newly developed method of producing exfoliated WSe₂ provides a useful conceptual and potential framework for developing WSe₂-based multifunctional nanocomposites to extend their application in solution-processed semiconductor devices.

Scalable exfoliation and dispersion of two-dimensional materials - an update

The preparation of dispersions of single- and few-sheet 2D materials in various solvents, as well as the characterization methods applied to such dispersions, is critically reviewed. Motivating factors for producing single- and few-sheet dispersions of 2D materials in liquids are briefly discussed. Many practical applications are expected for such materials that do not require high purity formulations and tight control of donor and acceptor concentrations, as required in conventional Fab processing of semiconductor chips. Approaches and challenges encountered in exfoliating 2D materials in liquids are reviewed. Ultrasonication, mechanical shearing, and electrochemical processing approaches are discussed, and their respective limitations and promising features are critiqued. Supercritical and more conventional liquid and solvent processing are then discussed in detail. The effects of various types of stabilizers, including surfactants and other amphiphiles, as well as polymers, including homopolymeric electrolytes, nonionic polymers, and nanolatexes, are discussed. Consideration of apparent successes of stabilizer-free dispersions indicates that extensive exfoliation in the absence of dispersing aids results from processing-induced surface modifications that promote stabilization of 2D material/solvent interactions. Also apparent paradoxes in "pristineness" and optical extinctions in dispersions suggest that there is much we do not yet quantitatively understand about the surface chemistry of these materials. Another paradox, emanating from modeling dilute solvent-only exfoliation by sonication using polar components of solubility parameters and surface tension for pristine graphene with no polar structural component, is addressed. This apparent paradox appears to be resolved by realizing that the reactivity of graphene to addition reactions of solvent radicals produced by sonolysis is accompanied by unintended polar surface modifications that promote attractive interactions with solvent. This hypothesis serves to define important theoretical and experimental studies that are needed. We conclude that the greatest promise for high volume and high concentration processing lies in applying methods that have not yet been extensively reported, particularly wet comminution processing using small grinding media of various types.

Microwave reduction of graphene oxide rationalized by reactive molecular dynamics

Obtaining graphene (GRA) in industrial quantities is among the most urgent goals in today's nanotechnology. Elegant methods involve the oxidation of graphite with its subsequent solvent-assisted exfoliation. The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) is challenging leading to a highly-disordered oxygen-rich material. A particularly successful microwave-induced reduction of GO was reported recently (Science, 2016, 353, 1413-1416). We mimic the experiment by reactive molecular dynamics and establish the molecular mechanisms of reduction and their time scales as functions of temperature. We show that the rapid removal of oxygen groups achieved by microwave heating leaves GRA sheets intact. The epoxy groups are most stable within GO. They can rearrange into the carbonyl groups upon quick heating. It is important to avoid creating holes upon graphite oxidation. They cannot be healed easily and undermine GRA thermal stability and electronic properties. The edge oxygen groups cannot be removed by irradiation, but their effect is marginal on the properties of μm GRA sheets. We demonstrate that different oxygen groups are removed from GO at drastically different temperatures. Therefore, it is possible to obtain separate fractions, e.g. carbonyl-, hydroxyl- and carboxyl-free partially reduced GO. Our results guide the improvement of the GO reduction methods and can be tested directly by experiment.

The fast fabrication of flexible electronic devices of graphene composites

The rapid production and accurate deposition of graphene composites are first integrated into one process, due to the strong interaction between the polymer bond with sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) and graphene. It is demonstrated that tension-shear exfoliation in high viscosity fluid may get a higher graphene production rate than in N-methyl-pyrrolidone. In addition, the micro-scale patterns of graphene nanomaterials produced by this method show high electrical conductivity and superior sensitivity to pressure due to their porous structure.

Supramolecular assembly-mediated lithium ion transport in nanostructured solid electrolytes
