Abstract
This work proposes the synthesis of a new polymer with imprinted ions (IIP) for the pre-concentration of uranium in natural waters using digital imaging as a detection technique. The polymer was synthesized using 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol (Br-PADAP) for complex formation, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinking reagent, methacrylic acid (AMA) as functional monomer, and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile as a radical initiator. The IIP was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (FTIR). Uranium determination was performed using digital imaging (ID), and some experimental conditions (sample pH, eluent concentration, and sampling flow rate) were optimized using a two-level full factorial design and Doelhert response surface methodology. Thus, using the optimized conditions, the system allowed the determination of uranium with detection and quantification limits of 2.55 and 8.51 µg L-1, respectively, and a pre-concentration factor of 8.2. All parameters were determined using a 25 mL sample volume. The precision expressed as relative deviation (RSD%) was 3.5% for a solution with a concentration of 50 µg L-1. Given this, the proposed method was used for the determination of uranium in four samples of natural waters collected in the city of Caetité, Bahia, Brazil. The concentrations obtained ranged from 35 to 75.4 μg L-1. The accuracy was evaluated by the addition/recovery test, and the values found ranged between 91 and 109%.

Abstract
Water is an essential moiety for the human use since a long time. Availability of good-quality water is very essential, as it is used in almost all the industrial, agricultural, and household activities. However, several factors such as increased urbanization and industrialization, extensive use of chemicals, natural weathering of rocks, and human ignorance led to incorporation of enormous toxicants into the water. The water toxicants are broadly classified as inorganic, organic, and radiological toxicants. Inorganic toxicants include heavy metals (As, Cr, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb) and metalloids, ammonia, nitrate, and fluoride. Uranium is included in radiological toxicants which also causes chemical toxicity. Organic pollutants include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, phenolic compounds, phthalate esters, pesticides, pharmaceutical and personal care products, perchlorates, and flame retardants. These toxicants are harmful for the ecosystem as well as for the human beings causing different types of health complications like lung cancer, nasal cancer, gingivitis, severe vomiting and abdominal pain, hormonal imbalance, skeletal damage, neurotoxicity like Alzheimer and Parkinson disease, renal toxicity, nephrotoxicity, etc. The USEPA and WHO specified the permissible concentration of these pollutants in the drinking water. Determination techniques having high sensitivity, low cost, rapid onsite, and real-time detection of traces of water pollutants are discussed. This review also covers in depth about the remediation techniques, for the control of water toxicants, such as chelation of the heavy metals, intoxication of pollutants using various plants, adsorption of toxicants using different sorbent medias, and photocatalytic breakdown of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

Abstract
Trace detection of fluoride ion has gained increasing attention due to fluoride's close association with biological and environmental processes. Herein, we construct a novel hybrid nanosystem consisting of carbon dots and curcumin for sensitive and selective sensing of F-. Carbon dots are synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of 2,3-diaminopyridine and selenourea in hydrochloric acid. This material is employed as the fluorescent indicator that exhibits intense blue and yellow emission with quantum yields of 12% and 33%, respectively. Curcumin, possessing an absorption peak at 532 nm, can significantly quench the yellow fluorescence of carbon dots through inner filter effect. Curcumin is also used to specifically recognize F-. When F- is added, the curcumin-F- complex generates, which leads to the hypochromatic shift of the absorption band from 532 to 430 nm. In such a case, the inner filter effect reduces, and yellow fluorescence of carbon dots recovers. Thus, a fluorescence turn-on sensor of F- is built based on the carbon dots/curcumin system. The limits of detection and quantitation are measured to be 0.39 and 1.30 μM, respectively. For real usage, the proposed method is applied to determinate F- in tap water and milk samples with relative standard deviations below 7.9%.

Abstract
This review (with 177 refs) gives an overview on nanomaterial-based methods for the determination of uranyl ion (UO22+) by different types of transducers. Following an introduction into the field, a first large section covers the fundamentals of selective recognition of uranyl ion by receptors such as antibodies, aptamers, DNAzymes, peptides, microorganisms, organic ionophores (such as salophens, catechols, phenanthrolines, annulenes, benzo-substituted macrocyclic diamides, organophosphorus receptors, calixarenes, crown ethers, cryptands and β-diketones), by ion imprinted polymers, and by functionalized nanomaterials. A second large section covers the various kinds of nanomaterials (NMs) used, specifically on NMs for electrochemical signal amplification, on NMs acting as signal tags or carriers for signal tags, on fluorescent NMs, on NMs for colorimetric assays, on light scattering NMs, on NMs for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based assays and wireless magnetoelastic detection systems. We then discuss detection strategies, with subsections on electrochemical methods (including ion-selective and potentiometric systems, voltammetric systems and impedimetric systems). Further sections treat colorimetric, fluorometric, resonance light scattering-based, SERS-based and photoacoustic methods, and wireless magnetoelastic detection. The current state of the art is summarized, and current challenges are discussed at the end. Graphical abstract An overview is given on nanomaterial-based methods for the detection of uranyl ion by different types of transducers (such as electrochemical, optical, photoacoustic, magnetoelastic, etc) along with a critical discussion of their limitations, benefits and application to real samples.

Abstract
More and more severe energy problem triggers extensive application of nuclear energy, and the adverse effects brought by nuclear materials such as uranyl to the environment are becoming the concern, as it has become a threat to human's health. Therefore, the detection of uranyl is increasingly important, which aims to make the application of uranium under surveillance and protection. A lot of detection methods employing varying materials based on different techniques for uranyl have been proposed including those using expensive and complicated instruments such as ICP-MS, ESI-MS, and neutron activation analysis etc. Those methods based on expensive instruments often provide quite low limit of detection (LOD) and excellent validity and repeatability, however, methods that are low-cost, convenient and rapid are in demand because these are satisfied characters for on-site and in-time determination. In the review, we discuss uranyl sensors based on spectrographic techniques, which is facile and promising for rapid assessment of uranium content in practical application. Spectrographic techniques including fluorescence, UV-vis spectrophotometry, resonance light scattering (RLS) and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) are evaluated. In detail, the core materials that playing extremely important roles in detection performance are stated consisting of small molecule, biomolecule, polymer and nanomaterial.

Abstract
A newer efficient U(VI) ion adsorbent was synthesized by impregnating Br-PADAP [2-(5-Bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(diethylamino)phenol] onto multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The effects of various operation conditions on uranium adsorption (i.e., pH contact time, temperature, and initial uranium concentration) were systematically evaluated using batch experiments. The results indicated that the uranium adsorption on modified MWNCTs (5.571 × 10-3g/mg × min) reached faster equilibrium than that on pristine MWNCTs (4.832 × 10-3g/mg × min), reflecting the involvement of appropriate functional groups of Br-PADAP on the chelating ion-exchange mechanism of U(VI) adsorption. Modified MWNCTs (83.4mg/g) exhibited significantly higher maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity than pristine MWNCTs (15.1mg/g). Approximately 99% of uranium adsorbed onto modified MWNCTs can be desorbed by 2.5mL of 1M HNO3 solution. Therefore, Br-PADAP-modified MWNCTs can server as a promising adsorbent for efficient uranium adsorption applications in water treatment. Subsequently, the proposed solid-phase extraction (using a mini-column packed with Br-PADAP/MWCNT) was successfully utilized for analysing trace uranium levels by the ICP-AES method in different environmental samples with a pre-concentration factor of 300-fold. The coexistence of other ions demonstrated an insignificant interference on the separative pre-concentration of uranium. the detection limit was recognized as 0.14μg/L, and the relative standard deviation was approximately 3.3% (n = 7).

Abstract
In this work, a new visual colorimetric strip based on cellulose acetate nanofiber mats modified by 2-(5-Bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-(diethylamino) phenol was successfully prepared via electrospinning technology. The prepared colorimetric strip showed high sensitivity towards UO22+ with the yellow-to-purple color change signal. Upon the optimal conditions of solution pH at 6.0 and response time for 80min, the detection limit for UO22+ can reach 50 ppb. Moreover, the strip also exhibited excellent anti-interference ability in the presence of other metal ions. In order to achieve the quantitative detection for UO22+, a color-differentiation map was established, which was prepared from converted H values. Finally, the strip was also used to detect UO22+ in the seawater and showed high sensitivity.

Abstract
Ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) have drawn much attention in the selective determination of heavy metals. In this study, 8-hydroxyquinoline-grafted gelatin with different types of functional groups was first introduced as a biomolecular monomer to enhance the selectivity of imprinted cavities. Based on its swelling and film-forming properties, a simple strategy containing formation of the hydrogel film, swelling/folding followed by cross-linking, was proposed to prepare three-dimensional IIPs with high adsorption capacity (235.7 mg g(-1)), strong selectivity (imprinted factor was 2.9), and rapid kinetics. Based on the different swelling container, different morphologies of IIPs could be prepared to satisfy the requirements of practical application. Consequently, the IIPs extraction coupled with a spectrophotometric method was applied for determination of lead ions, and the limit of detection was 0.2 ng mL(-1), which could be used for monitoring of Pb(II) in drinking water and surface water.

Abstract
Theophylline is an inexpensive drug employed in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder medications and is toxic at higher concentration. The development of a molecularly imprinted polymer based theophylline electrochemical sensor on glassy carbon electrode by the electropolymerization of 4-amino-5-hydroxy-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid is being discussed in this work. The MIP modification enhances the theophylline recognition ability and the electron transfer kinetics of the bare electrode. The parameters, controlling the performance of the imprinted polymer based sensor, like number of electropolymerization cycles, composition of the pre-polymerization mixture, pH and immersion time were investigated and optimized. The interaction energy and the most stable conformation of the template-monomer complex in the pre-polymerization mixture were determined computationally using ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. The amperometric measurements showed that the developed sensor has a method detection limit of 0.32μM for the dynamic range of 0.4 to 17μM, at optimized conditions. The transducer possesses appreciable selectivity in the presence of structurally similar interferents such as theobromine, caffeine and doxofylline. The developed sensor showed remarkable stability and reproducibility and was also successfully employed in theophylline detection from commercially available tablets.
