Abstract
Photocatalytic technology holds significant promise for sustainable development and environmental protection due to its ability to utilize renewable energy sources and degrade pollutants efficiently. In this study, BiOI nanosheets (NSs) were synthesized using a simple water bath method with varying amounts of mannitol and reaction temperatures to investigate their structural, morphological, photoelectronic, and photocatalytic properties. Notably, the introduction of mannitol played a critical role in inducing a transition in BiOI from an n-type to a p-type semiconductor, as evidenced by Mott-Schottky (M-S) and band structure analyses. This transformation enhanced the density of holes (h+) as primary charge carriers and resulted in the most negative conduction band (CB) position (-0.822 V vs. NHE), which facilitated the generation of superoxide radicals (·O2-) and enhanced photocatalytic activity. Among the samples, the BiOI-0.25-60 NSs (synthesized with 0.25 g of mannitol at 60 °C) exhibited the highest performance, characterized by the largest specific surface area (24.46 m2/g), optimal band gap energy (2.28 eV), and efficient photogenerated charge separation. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrated that BiOI-0.25-60 NSs achieved superior methylene blue (MB) degradation efficiency of 96.5% under simulated sunlight, 1.14 times higher than BiOI-0-70 NSs. Additionally, BiOI-0.25-60 NSs effectively degraded tetracycline (TC), 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-D), and rhodamine B (Rh B). Key factors such as photocatalyst concentration, MB concentration, and solution pH were analyzed, and the BiOI-0.25-60 NSs demonstrated excellent recyclability, retaining over 94.3% of their activity after three cycles. Scavenger tests further identified ·O2- and h+ as the dominant active species driving the photocatalytic process. In this study, the pivotal role of mannitol in modulating the semiconductor characteristics of BiOI nanomaterials is underscored, particularly in promoting the n-type to p-type transition and enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. These findings provide a valuable strategy for designing high-performance p-type photocatalysts for environmental remediation applications.

Abstract
With the intensification of the energy crisis and the growing concern over environmental pollution, particularly the discharge of organic dye pollutants in industrial wastewater, photocatalytic degradation of these contaminants using solar energy has emerged as an effective, eco-friendly solution. In this study, we successfully synthesized 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n heterojunctions via a simple precipitation method and a high-temperature calcination method. The unique 2D structures of g-C3N4 nanosheets (NSs) and BiOI NSs, coupled with the synergistic effect between the two materials, significantly enhanced the photocatalytic degradation performance of the heterojunctions under simulated sunlight. The band structures, as determined by Tauc curves, Mott-Schottky curves and XPS-VB analysis, revealed a Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism that efficiently reduced charge carrier recombination and improved electron-hole separation. The photocatalytic activity of 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n heterojunctions for rhodamine B (Rh B) degradation reached 99.7% efficiency within 60 min, a 2.37-fold and 1.27-fold improvement over pristine BiOI NSs and g-C3N4 NSs, respectively. Furthermore, the heterojunction exhibited excellent recyclability stability, with the degradation efficiency decreasing by only 1.2% after five cycles. Radical scavenging experiments confirmed the involvement of superoxide radicals (∙O2-) and hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) as the primary reactive species in the degradation process. This work highlights the potential of 2D/2D g-C3N4/BiOI p-n heterojunctions for efficient photocatalytic applications in environmental remediation.

Abstract
Building a heterojunction is a fascinating option to guarantee sufficient carrier separation and transfer efficiency, but the mechanism of charge migration at the heterojunction interface has not been thoroughly studied. Herein, MIL-53(Fe)/Bi4O5I2 photocatalyst with a Z-scheme heterojunction structure is constructed, which achieves efficient photocatalytic decontamination under solar light. Driven by the newly-built internal electric field (IEF), the formation of Fe-O-Bi electron migration channel allows for rapid separation and transfer of charge carriers at the heterojunction interface, confirmed by the material characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The narrower band gap and improved visible light response also contribute to the enhanced photocatalytic activity of composite materials. With levofloxacin as the target pollutant, the optimal MIL-53(Fe)/Bi4O5I2 achieves complete removal of pollutant within 150 min, the photocatalysis rate of which is ca. 4.4 and 26.0 times that of pure Bi4O5I2 and MIL-53(Fe), respectively. Simultaneously, the optimal composite material exhibits satisfactory photodegradation of seven fluoroquinolones, and the photocatalysis rates are as follows: lomefloxacin > ciprofloxacin > enrofloxacin > norfloxacin > pefloxacin > levofloxacin > marbofloxacin. DFT calculations reveal a positive relationship between degradation rate and Fukui index (ƒ0) of main carbon atoms in seven fluoroquinolones. This study sheds light on the existence of electron migration channels at Z-scheme heterojunction interface to ensure sufficient photoinduced carrier transfer, and reveals the influence of pollutant structure on photolysis rate.

Abstract
The investigation focused on creating and studying a new 2D-2D S-scheme CdS/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalyst. Various techniques examined its structure, composition, and optical properties. This included XRD, XPS, EDS, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, DRS, and PL. The heterojunction showed a reduced charge recombination rate and more excellent stability, helping to lessen photocorrosion. This was due to photogenerated holes moving more quickly out of the CdS valence band. The interface between g-C3N4 and CdS favored a synergistic charge transfer. A suitable flat band potential measurement supported enhanced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in degrading 4-nitrophenol and 2-nitrophenol. This resulted in remarkable degradation efficiency of up to 99% and mineralization of up to 79%. The findings highlighted the practical design of the new 2D-2D S-scheme CdS/g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalyst and its potential application in various energy and environmental settings, such as pollutant removal, hydrogen production, and CO2 conversion.

2D/2D Heterojunction systems for the removal of organic pollutants: A review. Adv Colloid Interface Sci 2021; 297:102540. Abstract
Photocatalysis is considered to be an effective way to remove organic pollutants, but the key to photocatalysis is finding a high-efficiency and stable photocatalyst. 2D materials-based heterojunction has aroused widespread concerns in photocatalysis because of its merits in more active sites, adjustable band gaps and shorter charge transfer distance. Among various 2D heterojunction systems, 2D/2D heterojunction with a face-to-face contact interface is regarded as a highly promising photocatalyst. Due to the strong coupling interface in 2D/2D heterojunction, the separation and migration of photoexcited electron-hole pairs are facilitated, which enhances the photocatalytic performance. Thus, the design of 2D/2D heterojunction can become a potential model for expanding the application of photocatalysis in the removal of organic pollutants. Herein, in this review, we first summarize the fundamental principles, classification, and strategies for elevating photocatalytic performance. Then, the synthesis and application of the 2D/2D heterojunction system for the removal of organic pollutants are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts and their application for removing organic pollutants are presented.

Abstract
Semiconductor-based photocatalysis has been identified as an encouraging approach for solving the two main challenging problems, viz., remedying our polluted environment and the generation of sustainable chemical energy. Stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX and BixOyXz where X = Cl, Br, and I) are a relatively new class of semiconductors that have attracted considerable interest for photocatalysis applications due to attributes, viz., high stability, suitable band structure, modifiable energy bandgap and two-dimensional layered structure capable of generating an internal electric field. Recently, the construction of heterojunction photocatalysts, especially 2D/2D systems, has convincingly drawn momentous attention practicably owing to the productive influence of having two dissimilar layered semiconductors in face-to-face contact with each other. This review has systematically summarized the recent progress on the 2D/2D heterojunction constructed between BiOX/BixOyXz with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4). The band structure of individual components, various fabrication methods, different strategies developed for improving the photocatalytic performance and their applications in the degradation of various organic contaminants, hydrogen (H2) evolution, carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction, nitrogen (N2) fixation and the organic synthesis of clean chemicals are summarized. The perspectives and plausible opportunities for developing high performance BiOX/BixOyXz-g-C3N4 heterojunction photocatalysts are also discussed.

Abstract
A graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) modified Bi4O5I2 composite was successfully prepared in-situ via the thermal treatment of a g-C3N4/BiOI precursor at 400°C for 3 hr. The as-prepared g-C3N4/Bi4O5I2 showed high photocatalytic performance in Methyl Orange (MO) degradation under visible light. The best sample presented a degradation rate of 0.164 min-1, which is 3.2 and 82 times as high as that of Bi4O5I2 and g-C3N4, respectively. The g-C3N4/Bi4O5I2 was characterized by X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and transient photocurrent response in order to explain the enhanced photoactivity. Results indicated that the decoration with a small amount of g-C3N4 influenced the specific surface area only slightly. Nevertheless, the capability for absorbing visible light was improved measurably, which was beneficial to the MO degradation. On top of that, a strong interaction between g-C3N4 and Bi4O5I2 was detected. This interplay promoted the formation of a favorable heterojunction structure and thereby enhanced the charge separation. Thus, the g-C3N4/Bi4O5I2 composite presented greater charge separation efficiency and much better photocatalytic performance than Bi4O5I2. Additionally, g-C3N4/Bi4O5I2 also presented high stability. •O2- and holes were verified to be the main reactive species.

Abstract
A series of visible-light-induced 2D/2D layered g-C3N4/Bi12O17Cl2 composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized by a one step chemical precipitation method with g-C3N4, BiCl3 and NaOH as the precursors at room temperature and characterized through XRD, FTIR, XPS, TEM, BET and UV-vis DRS measurements. The results of XRD, FTIR and XPS indicated that g-C3N4 has been introduced in the Bi12O17Cl2 system. The TEM image demonstrated that there was strong surface-to-surface contact between 2D g-C3N4 layers and Bi12O17Cl2 nanosheets, which contributed to a fast transfer of the interfacial electrons, leading to a high separation rate of photoinduced charge carriers in the g-C3N4/Bi12O17Cl2 system. Rhodamine B was considered as the model pollutant to investigate the photocatalytic activity of the resultant samples. The g-C3N4/Bi12O17Cl2 composite showed a clearly improved photocatalytic degradation capacity compared to bare g-C3N4 and Bi12O17Cl2, which was ascribed to the interfacial contact between the 2D g-C3N4 layers and Bi12O17Cl2 sheet with a matched energy band structure, promoting the photoinduced charges' efficient separation. Finally, combined with the results of the trapping experiment, ESR measurements and the band energy analysis, a reasonable photocatalytic mechanism over the 2D/2D layered g-C3N4/Bi12O17Cl2 composite was proposed. Surface-to-surface contact g-C3N4/Bi12O17Cl2 hybrid material with a matched energy band structure could efficiently transfer photoinduced charges, improving the photocatalytic activity.![]()
