Electrochemical C-H/C-C Bond Oxygenation: A Potential Technology for Plastic Depolymerization

Herein, we provide eco-friendly and safely operated electrocatalytic methods for the selective oxidation directly or with water, air, light, metal catalyst or other mediators serving as the only oxygen supply. Heavy metals, stoichiometric chemical oxidants, or harsh conditions were drawbacks of earlier oxidative cleavage techniques. It has recently come to light that a crucial stage in the deconstruction of plastic waste and the utilization of biomass is the selective activation of inert C(sp3 )-C/H(sp3 ) bonds, which continues to be a significant obstacle in the chemical upcycling of resistant polyolefin waste. An appealing alternative to chemical oxidations using oxygen and catalysts is direct or indirect electrochemical conversion. An essential transition in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries is the electrochemical oxidation of C-H/C-C bonds. In this review, we discuss cutting-edge approaches to chemically recycle commercial plastics and feasible C-C/C-H bonds oxygenation routes for industrial scale-up.

A three component 1,3-difunctionalization of vinyl diazo esters enabled by a cobalt catalyzed C-H activation/carbene migratory insertion

We report herein, a modular, regioselective 1,3-oxyarylation of vinyl diazo esters via a Co-catalyzed C-H activation/carbene migratory insertion cascade. The transformation involves the formation of C-C and C-O bonds in a one-pot fashion and displays a broad substrate scope with respect to both, vinyl diazo esters as well as benzamides. The coupled products were subjected to hydrogenation to access elusive allyl alcohol scaffolds. Mechanistic investigations reveal interesting insights on the mode of transformation, involving C-H activation, carbene migratory insertion of the diazo compound followed by a radical addition as the key steps of the transformation.

Cofactor-Free Dioxygenases-Catalyzed Reaction Pathway via Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Understanding the general mechanism of the metal-free and cofactor-free oxidases and oxygenases catalyzed activation of triplet O₂ is one of the most challenging questions in the field of enzymatic catalysis. Herein, we have performed Quantum Mechanics/Molecular Mechanics (QM/MM) multiscale simulations to reveal the detailed mechanism of the HOD catalyzed (i.e., 1-H-3-hydroxy-4-oxoquinaldine 2,4-dioxygenase from Arthrobacter nitroguajacolicus Rü61a) decomposition of N-heteroaromatic compounds. The complete catalytic mechanism includes four steps: (1) proton transfer from 1-H-3-hydroxy-4-oxoquinaldine (QND) substrate to His251 residue coupled with an electron transfer from QND to triplet O₂ (i.e., PCET), (2) formation of C-O bond via an open-shell singlet diradical recombination pathway, (3) ring-closure to form a bicyclic ring, and (4) dissociation of CO. The dissociation of CO is determined as the rate-limiting step, and its calculated energy barrier of 14.9 kcal/mol is consistent with the 15.5 kcal/mol barrier derived from experimental kinetic data. The mechanistic profile is not only valuable for understanding the fundamental pathway of cofactor-free oxidases and oxygenases-catalyzed reactions involving the triplet O₂ activation but also discloses a new pathway that undergoes the processes of PCET and open-shell singlet transition state.

Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H bond activation as a sustainable strategy for the synthesis of fluorinated molecules: an overview

The last decade has witnessed the emergence of innovative synthetic tools for the synthesis of fluorinated molecules. Among these approaches, the transition-metal-catalyzed functionalization of various scaffolds with a panel of fluorinated groups (XR_F, X = S, Se, O) offered straightforward access to high value-added compounds. This review will highlight the main advances made in the field with the transition-metal-catalyzed functionalization of C(sp²) and C(sp³) centers with SCF₃, SeCF₃, or OCH₂CF₃ groups among others, by C-H bond activation. The scope and limitations of these transformations are discussed in this review.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Asymmetric C-O Bond Construction Between Benzoic Acid and o-Phthalaldehyde: Mechanism and Origin of Stereoselectivity

A computational study was contributed to explore the origin of stereoselectivity of NHC-mediated cyclization reaction between benzoic acid and o-phthalaldehyde for asymmetric construction of phthalidyl ester. The most energetically favorable pathway mainly includes the following steps: (1) nucleophilic attack on carbonyl carbon of o-phthalaldehyde by catalyst NHC, (2) formation of Breslow intermediate, (3) oxidation by DQ, (4) asymmetric formation of dual C-O bonds, and (5) dissociation of catalyst with the product. The C-O bond formation was testified as the stereoselectivity-determining step, the R-configurational pathway is more energetically favorable than the S-configurational one. The non-covalent interaction (NCI) and atom-in-molecule (AIM) analyses were performed to reveal that the O-H ⋅⋅⋅ O and C-H ⋅⋅⋅ O hydrogen-bond interactions are the key factors for controlling the stereoselectivity. The detailed mechanism and origin of stereoselectivity give useful insights for understanding organocatalytic reactions for asymmetric construction of C-O bond.

Directed Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H Activation to Form C-C and C-O Bonds in One Pot via Three-Component Coupling

Herein, we disclose an efficient cobalt-catalyzed three-component coupling of benzamides, diazo compounds, and tert-butyl hydroperoxide, which provides an efficient approach to construct C(sp²)-C(sp³) and C-O bonds in one-pot accompanied with C-H activation. This protocol features low catalyst loading (4 mol %), the avoidance of additives, and excellent functional group compatibility, providing three-component coupling adducts with high yields under mild conditions (up to 88%). Mechanism studies show that the reaction may involve a radical process.

Copper-Catalyzed Direct C(sp3)-H Alkoxylation to Access Quaternary α-Alkoxylated Amino Acid Derivatives

A copper-catalyzed C(sp³)-H alkoxylation was developed to prepare quaternary α-alkoxylated amino acid derivatives in good yields. This protocol can be applied to a series of α-amino acids bearing a variety of functional group substituents. Facile removal of the auxiliary directing group and tolerance of condensation conditions for amide bond formation enable the potential application of this method in the discovery of new peptide drugs in the future.

Mechanistic details of the cobalt-mediated dehydrogenative dimerization of aminoquinoline-directed benzamides

Key mechanistic features of the cobalt-mediated and aminoquinoline-directed dehydrogenative aryl-aryl coupling were investigated computationally and experimentally. A series of CoII and CoIII complexes relevant to the proposed reaction cycle have been synthesized and characterized. Stoichiometric reactions and electrochemical studies were used to probe the role of different additives in the reaction pathway. Computationally, three different mechanisms, such as charge neutral, anionic, and dimetallic were explored. It is shown that the mono-metallic anionic and charge neutral mechanisms are the most favorable ones, among which the former mechanism is slightly more encouraging and proceeds via the: (a) concerted-metalation-deprotonation (CMD) of the first benzamide C-H bond, (b) PivOH-to-PivO- rearrangement, (c) CMD of the second benzamide C-H bond, (d) C-C coupling, (e) product formation facilitated by the amide nitrogen re-protonation, and (f) catalyst regeneration. The rate-determining step of this multi-step process is the C-C coupling step. The computational studies suggest that the electronics of both the aryl-benzamide and pyridine fragments of the aminoquinoline-benzamide ligand control the efficiency of the reaction.

Copper(i)/Ganphos catalysis: enantioselective synthesis of diverse spirooxindoles using iminoesters and alkyl substituted methyleneindolinones

A copper-catalyzed asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of glycine iminoesters with alkyl substituted 3-methylene-2-oxindoles is described. By using de novo design of P-stereogenic phosphines as ligands, spiro[pyrrolidin-3,3'-oxindole]s are generated in good to excellent yields with high asymmetric induction. A further reduced catalyst loading of 0.1 mol% is sufficient to achieve a satisfactory enantioselectivity of 90% ee. The DFT calculations suggest the second Michael addition of the 1,3-dipole to be the rate- and enantio-determining step. A key feature of this 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition is the wide substrate applicability, even with alkyl aldehyde-derived azomethine ylide; thus it has streamlined a highly enantioselective access to a new class of antiproliferative agents, MDM2-p53.

Carboxylate breaks the arene C-H bond via a hydrogen-atom-transfer mechanism in electrochemical cobalt catalysis

Combined computational and experimental studies elucidated the distinctive mechanistic features of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H oxygenation. A sequential electrochemical-chemical (EC) process was identified for the formation of an amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate. The synthesis, characterization, cyclic voltammetry studies, and stoichiometric reactions of the related amidylcobalt(iii) intermediate suggested that a second on-cycle electro-oxidation occurs on the amidylcobalt(iii) species, which leads to a formal Co(iv) intermediate. This amidylcobalt(iv) intermediate is essentially a cobalt(iii) complex with one additional single electron distributed on the coordinating heteroatoms. The radical nature of the coordinating pivalate allows the formal Co(iv) intermediate to undergo a novel carboxylate-assisted HAT mechanism to cleave the arene C-H bond, and a CMD mechanism could be excluded for a Co(iii/i) catalytic scenario. The mechanistic understanding of electrochemical cobalt-catalyzed C-H bond activation highlights the multi-tasking electro-oxidation and the underexplored reaction channels in electrochemical transition metal catalysis.

Room-temperature Pd/Ag direct arylation enabled by a radical pathway

Direct arylation is an appealing method for preparing π-conjugated materials, avoiding the prefunctionalization required for traditional cross-coupling methods. A major effort in organic electronic materials development is improving the environmental and economic impact of production; direct arylation polymerization (DArP) is an effective method to achieve these goals. Room-temperature polymerization would further improve the cost and energy efficiencies required to prepare these materials. Reported herein is new mechanistic work studying the underlying mechanism of room temperature direct arylation between iodobenzene and indole. Results indicate that room-temperature, Pd/Ag-catalyzed direct arylation systems are radical-mediated. This is in contrast to the commonly proposed two-electron mechanisms for direct arylation and appears to extend to other substrates such as benzo[b]thiophene and pentafluorobenzene.

Bidentate Directing Groups: An Efficient Tool in C-H Bond Functionalization Chemistry for the Expedient Construction of C-C Bonds

During the past decades, synthetic organic chemistry discovered that directing group assisted C-H activation is a key tool for the expedient and siteselective construction of C-C bonds. Among the various directing group strategies, bidentate directing groups are now recognized as one of the most efficient devices for the selective functionalization of certain positions due to fact that its metal center permits fine, tunable, and reversible coordination. The family of bidentate directing groups permit various types of assistance to be achieved, such as N,N-dentate, N,O-dentate, and N,S-dentate auxiliaries, which are categorized based on the coordination site. In this review, we broadly discuss various C-H bond functionalization reactions for the formation of C-C bonds with the aid of bidentate directing groups.

Ion exchange collaborating coordination substitution: More efficient Cr(VI) removal performance of a water-stable CuII-MOF material

An unusual water-stable cationic metal-organic framework {[Cu(L)_0.5(bpe)(H₂O)](NO₃)•(H₂O)_0.5}_n (1) (H₄L = bis(3,5-dicarboxypyridinium)-p-xylylene) was synthesized, which was developed into an effective capture material for removal chromate from water. The results show that this material efficiently traps HCrO₄^- pollutant ions via single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) coordination substitution process. The HCrO₄^- uptake capacity of 1 is high to 190 mg/g. Meaningfully, the structure of 1-HCrO₄ ({[Cu(L)_0.5(bpe)(HCrO₄)]}_n) can be accurately obtained by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, where the chromate enter the framework to form stable coordination with central metal ions Cu²⁺. This is the first example of a stable coordination between chromate and the framework during the capture process. The captured HCrO₄^- are not dissociated easily into the solution due to the coordination bond. This interaction makes the enrichment of HCrO₄^- more stable and the capture capacity excellent. Furthermore, the HCrO₄^- releasing process displays good regeneration in a single crystal state, which further elaborates the reversible SCSC transformation. The mechanism of Cr(VI) removal was also confirmed by DFT calculation studies. This work provides a new way to design and develop efficient MOF capture materials.

Insights into N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Oxidative α-C(sp3)-H Activation of Aliphatic Aldehydes and Cascade [2 + 2] Cycloaddition with Ketimines

Predicting the chemoselectivity of [2 + 2] cyclizations is an important challenge in organic chemistry. Herein, we provided a valuable case for this issue. Density functional theory calculations were performed to systematically study the possible mechanisms and origin of selectivities for the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed oxidative α-C(sp³)-H activation of aliphatic aldehydes and the cascade [2 + 2] cycloaddition with ketimines. The [2 + 2] cycloaddition of azolium enolate intermediates to the C═N bond, rather than the C═O bond of ketimine, is revealed to be determined by chemo- and stereoselectivity. By comparing the energy gap between the frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) of the two reacting parts involved in the [2 + 2] cycloaddition transition states, we propose a new strategy to determine the origin of the reaction chemoselectivity. Moreover, the local nucleophilic index can efficiently predict the active site of ketimines. Further analyses illustrate that NHC can increase the nucleophilicity of aldehydes and the acidity of the α-C(sp³)-H bond, and 3,3',5,5'-tetra- tert-butyl diphenoquinone (DQ) acts as an oxidant and promotes α-C(sp³)-H bond deprotonation. This work is useful not only for understanding the NHC-catalyzed oxidative [2 + 2] annulation but also for developing new applications of the FMO theory in organocatalytic cyclizations.
