Abstract
The use of visible-light-driven photocatalysts in wastewater treatment, photoreduction of CO2, green solar fuels, and solar cells has elicited substantial research attention. Bismuth oxyhalide and its derivatives are a group of visible-light photocatalysts that can diminish electron–hole recombination in layered structures and boost photocatalytic activity. The energy bandgap of these photocatalysts lies in the range of visible light. A simple hydrothermal method was applied to fabricate a series of bismuth oxychloride/bismuth oxyiodide/grafted graphitic carbon nitride (BiOmCln/BiOpIq/g-C3N4) sheets with different contents of g-C3N4. The fabricated sheets were characterized through XRD, TEM, SEM-EDS, XPS, UV-vis DRS, PL, and BET. The conversion efficiency of CO2 reduction to CH4 of BiOmCln/BiOpIq of 4.09 μmol g−1 can be increased to 39.43 μmol g−1 by compositing with g-C3N4. It had an approximately 9.64 times improvement. The photodegradation rate constant for crystal violet (CV) dye of BiOmCln/BiOpIq of k = 0.0684 can be increased to 0.2456 by compositing with g-C3N4. It had an approximately 3.6 times improvement. The electron paramagnetic resonance results and the quenching effects indicated that 1O2, •OH, h+, and •O2− were active species in the aforementioned photocatalytic degradation. Because of their heterojunction, the prepared ternary nanocomposites possessed the characteristics of a heterojunction of type II band alignment.

Abstract
Bismuth-based nanostructures (BBNs) have attracted extensive research attention due to their tremendous development in the fields of photocatalysis and electro-catalysis. BBNs are considered potential photocatalysts because of their easily tuned electronic properties by changing their chemical composition, surface morphology, crystal structure, and band energies. However, their photocatalytic performance is not satisfactory yet, which limits their use in practical applications. To date, the charge carrier behavior of surface-engineered bismuth-based nanostructured photocatalysts has been under study to harness abundant solar energy for pollutant degradation and water splitting. Therefore, in this review, photocatalytic concepts and surface engineering for improving charge transport and the separation of available photocatalysts are first introduced. Afterward, the different strategies mainly implemented for the improvement of the photocatalytic activity are considered, including different synthetic approaches, the engineering of nanostructures, the influence of phase structure, and the active species produced from heterojunctions. Photocatalytic enhancement via the surface plasmon resonance effect is also examined and the photocatalytic performance of the bismuth-based photocatalytic mechanism is elucidated and discussed in detail, considering the different semiconductor junctions. Based on recent reports, current challenges and future directions for designing and developing bismuth-based nanostructured photocatalysts for enhanced photoactivity and stability are summarized.

Abstract
Pharmaceutical residual contaminants in aquatic ecosystems have caused severe risks to human health. Affordable, eco-friendly and effective photocatalysts to deal with these pollutants has become a hot topic in the scientific community. In this research, Ag3BiO3 nanoparticles were embedded on TiO2 to form n-n heterojunction through a facile hydrothermal method. According to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), brunauer emmett teller (BET), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), photoluminescence (PL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS) tests, the successful construction of TiO2/Ag3BiO3 heterojunction is proved. TiO2/Ag3BiO3 heterojunctions were employed as photocatalysts to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under visible light irradiation in aqueous solution. Optimum TCH photodegradation efficiency was observed for TiO2/Ag3BiO3 (10%), 15.4 times superior to that of TiO2. The enhanced TCH photodegradation efficiency of TiO2/Ag3BiO3 results from improved light absorption capacity and the reduction of recombination of photogenerated charge carriers via generation of n-n heterojunctions. The mechanism of increasing the photodegradation efficiency of TCH was determined by employing reactive species quenching experiments. TiO2/Ag3BiO3 (10%) also exhibited an acceptable stability.

Abstract
The first systematic synthesis of bismuth oxychloride/bismuth oxybromide/graphitic carbon nitride (BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4) nano-composites used a controlled hydrothermal method. The structure, morphology and characteristic of BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4 photocatalyst were measured by XRD, UV-vis-DRS, FT-IR, FE-TEM, FE-SEM-EDS, PL, BET, HR-XPS and EPR. Under visible light irradiation, the photodegradation activity was evaluated for the decolorization of crystal violet (CV) and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HBA) in aqueous solution. The catalytic performance showed that, when using sample BB2C1-4-250-30 wt% g-C3N4 composite as a photocatalyst, the best reaction-rate-constant (k) was 0.071 h-1. It was 1.5 times higher than the k value of BB2C1-4-250 as a photocatalyst. From the scavenging effect of various scavengers, the results of EPR showed that reactive OH was the main scavenger, while O2-, h+ and 1O2 were the second scavenger in CV degradation. In this study, a possible photodegradation mechanism was proposed and discussed. In this work, our method of BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4 preparation could be used for future mass production and the BiOxCly/BiOmBrn/g-C3N4 composite materials could be applied to the environmental pollution control in future.

Abstract
In recent years, lithium-containing ceramic materials have attracted considerable research attention as high-temperature adsorbents of carbon dioxide. The recycling of electrode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries for use as photocatalysts in recovering CO2 and degrading organic pollutants is worthy of exploration. Solid, magnetic ferrite-containing photocatalysts are easily separated from reaction solutions by using magnetic devices. Solid catalysts (e.g., LiFeO2, LiFe5O8, NaFeO2, and K2Fe2O4) were prepared through the calcination of Fe2O3 and M2CO3. CO2 was photoreduced and crystal violet (CV) and 2-hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HBA) were photodegraded under visible light irradiation. The optimized K2Fe2O4 photocatalyst increased the rate of photocatalytic conversion from CO2 to methane at 20.9 µmol g-1 h-1. The catalytic efficiency indicated that the optimized reaction rate constants of CV with LiFeO2, NaFeO2, and K2Fe2O4 were 2.98 × 10-1, 5.32 × 10-1, and 4.36 × 10-1 h-1, respectively. The quenching effect achieved through the use of various scavengers and the electron paramagnetic resonance in CV degradation revealed the substantial contribution of the reactive superoxide anion radical O2- and the minor roles of h+ and the OH radical. Its usefulness in the synthesis of solid-base catalyst MFeO2 is promising for environmental control and relevant applications, particularly in solar energy manufacturing.

Abstract
Bi2SiO5/Bi4MoO9 photocatalysts with heterostructures were successfully prepared using a one-pot solvothermal route. The effect of the molybdenum source on composite formation is discussed. Under ultraviolet light irradiation, the Bi2SiO5/Bi4MoO9 heterojunction photocatalyst exhibited higher photocatalytic performance than Bi2SiO5 and Bi4MoO9 towards the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP). This dramatically enhanced photoactivity can be ascribed to the construction of a heterojunction interface between Bi2SiO5 and Bi4MoO9, which not only suppresses the recombination of photoexcited charge carriers but also enhances light absorption. In addition, from a practical point of view, the the effect of initial CIP concentration and coexisting ions on the photodegradation process using as-prepared Bi2SiO5/Bi4MoO9 heterojunction photocatalysts was explored. Trapping experiments demonstrate that photoexcited holes and superoxide radicals are the main active species in the photodegradation of CIP over Bi2SiO5/Bi4MoO9 heterojunctions. Meanwhile, the conduction band and valence band potentials of Bi2SiO5 and Bi4MoO9 were measured by density functional theory calculation, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky curves. A possible photocatalytic mechanism for CIP degradation over the Bi2SiO5/Bi4MoO9 heterojunction is proposed.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation of toxic pollutants is an efficient technique to completely remove the toxic pollutants from water bodies. In the present investigation, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants was studied over porous g-C3N4/H-ZSM-5 nanocomposite under visible light irradiation. The composite g-C3N4/H-ZSM-5 was synthesized by mixing an aqueous solution of H-ZSM-5 zeolite (increases surface area and provides active sites for degradation) with melamine (precursor of g-C3N4) for 10-12 h followed by calcinations at 550 °C. The photocatalyst was characterized by XRD, BET, HRTEM, FESEM, EDS and elemental mapping analysis. These techniques confirmed that, g-C3N4/H-ZSM-5 composite have layered and porous structure with uniform distribution of g-C3N4 on H-ZSM-5 surface. The BET N2 adsorption-desorption analysis verified that the catalyst has high surface area (∼175 m2/g) having mesopores and micropores. The prepared catalyst was then used for the photodegradation of a model dye, Methylene Blue (MB) and an endocrine disrupting compound, Fipronil (FIP). Effects of various parameters such as pH, catalyst dose and scavengers were also studied. The % photocatalytic degradation of MB and FIP were around ∼92% and ∼84% with a high rate constants of 0.00997 and 0.00875 min-1, respectively. From the scavenger study, OH (hydroxyl radical) and radical was found to be the major reactive species for MB and FIP degradation. From these studies it is revealed that, the catalyst is visible active, easy to prepare and an efficient photocatalyst for toxic pollutant degradation.

Abstract
In this study, Bi7O9I3 photocatalyst was successfully synthesized via a simple and rapid microwave irradiation method. The characterization of prepared photocatalysts was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL). The photocatalytic performance was determines by the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under xenon lamp illumination. The Bi7O9I3 catalyst exhibited superior photocatalytic performance and the first-order kinetic rate constant of Bi7O9I3 was about 4.2 times greater than that of BiOI. The enhanced photocatalytic activity was associated with surface morphology, suitable band gap energy and low recombination rate of electron–hole pairs. Furthermore, the photocatalytic efficiency of BPA with Bi7O9I3 was systematically investigated using a three factor, three level Box–Behnken experimental design and response surface methodology (RSM). A quadratic polynomial model was proposed. Experimental and predicted values exhibited a good correlation with a predicted R2 value of 0.9016. A relative significance study of three independent variables showed that catalyst dosage had the most significant positive effect on the degradation of BPA, followed by initial concentration of BPA and pH value. The prepared Bi7O9I3 is a promising photocatalyst for practical application in organic pollutant decomposition. Bi7O9I3 was synthesized via a microwave irradiation method and the influence of different parameters on BPA degradation was investigated using a response surface methodology.![]()

Abstract
The band gaps of bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) and bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) are about 2.40 eV and 1.30 eV, respectively. Although both BiVO4 and Bi2S3 are capable of strong visible light absorption, electron–hole recombination occurs easily. To solve this problem, we designed a one-step hydrothermal method for synthesizing a Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3)/Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) heterojunction using polyvinylpyrrolidone K-30 (PVP) as a structure-directing agent, and 2-Amino-3-mercaptopropanoic acid (l-cysteine) as a sulfur source. The pH of the reaction solution was regulated to yield different products: when the pH was 7.5, only monoclinic BiVO4 was produced (sample 7.5); when the pH was 8.0 or 8.5, both Bi2S3 and BiVO4 were produced (samples 8.0 and 8.5); and when the pH was 9.0, only Bi2S3 was produced (sample 9.0). In sample 8.0, Bi2S3 and BiVO4 were closely integrated with each other, with Bi2S3 particles formed on the surface of concentric BiVO4 layers, but the two compounds grew separately in a pH solution of 8.5. Visible-light photocatalytic degradation experiments demonstrated that the degradation efficiency of the Bi2S3/BiVO4 heterojunction was highest when prepared under a pH of 8.0. The initial rhodamine B in the solution (5 mg/L) was completely degraded within three hours. Recycling experiments verified the high stability of Bi2S3/BiVO4. The synthesis method proposed in this paper is expected to enable large-scale and practical use of Bi2S3/BiVO4.
