Coupling influences of organic components and temperature on nitrogen transformation and hydrochar characterization during hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge

Nitrogen (N) in sewage sludge (SS) should be reduced if it is to be used to produce clean solid fuels. However, the N transformation during hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of SS is not yet fully understood. Since the composition of SS is complex, it is wise to study a model compound, which should have typical functional groups of organic components. Hence, in this study, six model components (protein, lipid, cellulose, hemicellulose, humic acid, and lignin) representing the main organic components in SS were mixed with SS and treated at 150-270 °C for 1 h. The influence of the organic component and reaction temperature on hydrochar yield, hydrochar characterization, and N distribution in the products was investigated. Except for proteins and lipids, all the other components were found to contribute to the N content and aromatization of the hydrochar. Humus shows the best comprehensive performance in terms of both reducing the N content and increasing the aromaticity. The strongest effects of hemicellulose and cellulose on N retention in hydrochar are found to occur at 210 °C and 240 °C, respectively. The N retention caused by lignin is correlated with the Mannich reaction at 240 °C, while humus significantly promotes N transformation at 240 °C. For carbohydrates, lignin, and humus, the temperatures required for increasing the N content and aromaticity maintain a high degree of consistency. Although protein pulls down the energy recovery (ER) and yield of the hydrochar, observations indicate that it favors the carbonization process. This finding can be used for estimating the N content and quality of hydrochar and provides references for future research targeting the upgrading of hydrochar.

Green Phenolic Resins from Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB) Phenolated Lignin and Bio-Oil as Phenol Substitutes for Bonding Plywood

Lignin is a natural biopolymer with a complex three-dimensional network and it is rich in phenol, making it a good candidate for the production of bio-based polyphenol material. This study attempts to characterize the properties of green phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins produced through phenol substitution by the phenolated lignin (PL) and bio-oil (BO), extracted from oil palm empty fruit bunch black liquor. Mixtures of PF with varied substitution rates of PL and BO were prepared by heating a mixture of phenol-phenol substitute with 30 wt.% NaOH and 80% formaldehyde solution at 94 °C for 15 min. After that, the temperature was reduced to 80 °C before the remaining 20% formaldehyde solution was added. The reaction was carried out by heating the mixture to 94 °C once more, holding it for 25 min, and then rapidly lowering the temperature to 60 °C, to produce the PL-PF or BO-PF resins. The modified resins were then tested for pH, viscosity, solid content, FTIR, and TGA. Results revealed that the substitution of 5% PL into PF resins is enough to improve its physical properties. The PL-PF resin production process was also deemed environmentally beneficial, as it met 7 of the 8 Green Chemistry Principle evaluation criteria.

Selective Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation of Lignin to Alkyl Guaiacols Over NiMo/Al-MCM-41

Efficient deoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oils is central to their adoption as precursors to sustainable liquid fuels in place of current fossil resources. In-situ catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH), using isopropanol and formic acid as solvent and in-situ hydrogen sources, was demonstrated over metal-doped and promoted MCM-41 for the depolymerization of oxygen-rich (35.85 wt%) lignin from Chinese fir sawdust (termed O-lignin). A NiMo/Al-MCM-41 catalyst conferred an optimal lignin-derived oil yield of 61.6 wt% with a comparatively low molecular weight (M_w =542 g mol^-1 , M_n =290 g mol^-1 ) and H/C ratio of 1.39. High selectivity to alkyl guaiacols was attributed to efficient in-situ hydrogen transfer from isopropanol/formic acid donors, and a synergy between surface acid sites in the Al-doped MCM-41 support and reducible Ni/Mo species, which improved the chemical stability and quality of the resulting lignin-derived bio-oils.

Sustainable Esterification of a Soda Lignin with Phloretic Acid

In this work, a sustainable chemical process was developed through the Fischer esterification of Protobind^® lignin, a wheat straw soda lignin, and phloretic acid, a naturally occurring phenolic acid. It aimed at increasing the reactivity of lignin by enhancing the number of unsubstituted phenolic groups via a green and solvent-free chemical pathway. The structural features of the technical and esterified lignins were characterized by complementary spectroscopic techniques, including ¹H, ¹³C, ³¹P, and two-dimensional analysis. A substantial increase in p-hydroxyphenyl units was measured (+64%, corresponding to an increase of +1.3 mmol g⁻¹). A full factorial design of the experiment was employed to quantify the impact of critical variables on the conversion yield. The subsequent statistical analysis suggested that the initial molar ratio between the two precursors was the factor predominating the yield of the reaction. Hansen solubility parameters of both the technical and esterified lignins were determined by solubility assays in multiple solvents, evidencing their high solubility in common organic solvents. The esterified lignin demonstrated a better thermal stability as the onset of thermal degradation shifted from 157 to 220 °C, concomitantly to the shift of the glass transition from 92 to 112 °C. In conclusion, the esterified lignin showed potential for being used as sustainable building blocks for composite and thermoset applications.

Steam explosion pretreatment improves acetic acid organosolv delignification of oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse

Steam explosion can be used to pretreat lignocellulosic materials to decrease energy and chemical consumption during pulping to obtain environmentally friendly lignin and to improve lignin yield without changing its structure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extraction of lignin from oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse using steam explosion pretreatment followed by acetosolv. The biomasses were pretreated at 168 °C for a reaction time of 10 min. Steam explosion combined with acetosolv at lower severities was also carried out. Steam explosion followed by acetosolv increased the lignin yield by approximately 15% and 17% in oil palm mesocarp fibers and sugarcane bagasse, respectively. In addition, steam explosion decreased the reaction time of acetosolv four-fold while maintaining the lignin yield from sugarcane bagasse. Similar results were not obtained for oil palm mesocarp. High-purity and high-quality lignins were obtained using steam explosion pretreatment with structural characteristics similar to raw ones. Sugarcane bagasse lignin seems to be a better option for application in material science due its higher lignin yield and higher thermal stability. Our findings demonstrate that steam explosion is efficient for improving lignin yield and/or decreasing pulping severity.

Advanced development of dairy farm waste-based biocarbon-reinforced unsymmetrical structured bio-phenolic polybenzoxazine composites

In the present work, an attempt has been made to develop cow manure carbon-reinforced hybrid biophenol-based benzoxazine composites for antifouling coating applications. Bio-based benzoxazine with unsymmetrical molecular structure was synthesized using the mixture of a combination of cardanol and eugenol with diaminodiphenyl methane and paraformaldehyde, and the hybrid-benzoxazine obtained was characterized using different analytical techniques, viz., Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance and MALDI mass. Bio-based benzoxazine was further reinforced with varying weight percentages (1, 3 and 5 wt%) of biocarbon derived from cow manure to obtain hybrid composite coatings. The hybrid benzoxazine matrix and composites were studied for their thermal behaviour, contact angle (CA), morphology, corrosion-resistant behaviour and antifouling character to utilize them as coatings materials for different industrial applications. Results obtained from different studies inferred that the biocarbon-reinforced composites possess an enhanced value of glass transition temperature (249°C), high char yield (38.4%), improved CA (105.6°), higher efficiency of corrosion protection against mild steel surface (98%) and improved antimicrobial activity.

Reactivity improvement by phenolation of wheat straw lignin isolated from a biorefinery process
