Abstract
Selective complexation of specific units in homooligomers is usually challenging due to their similar reactivity. We now report a heteronuclear complex using a macrocyclic ligand with four identical ONO chelating units, which was synthesized by selective coordination to molybdenum at two diagonal units, followed by palladium at the remaining units.

Abstract
Zn(II) complexes possess attractive characteristics for supramolecular chemistry, catalysis, and optoelectronic applications, while Zn-Salphen counterparts are also suitable as chemical sensors, although limited by solution-based to date. In this study, we report the synthesis of new polymers from methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate, and a non-symmetrical Zn-Salphen complex. We show that this low-fluorescent complex exhibits aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties and that, the incorporation of AIEE complexes into a polymeric matrix make it possible to achieve fluorescent films with enhanced fluorescence suitable for sensing applications. As a proof of concept, these films could detect acetic acid, showing a decrease of up to 73% in the original fluorescence. Host/guest studies showed a subtle disruption of the emission in aggregates upon treatment with anion guests. These results indicate that an interaction between the guest and Zn-Salphen complex may occur, stabilizing or destabilizing the complex and causing a concomitant increase or decrease in emission.

Abstract
Understanding the photophysical properties of metal salen complexes is not straightforward because the emission efficiency is altered irregularly upon structural modifications. The present study prepared zinc salen complexes with systematic structural variations to pinpoint critical factors to determine the emission efficiency. One of the important experimental observations is the regiochemistry of a phenolate substituent affecting emission efficiency from a salicylidene fluorophore, which is nicely assigned as arising from the photoexcited electronic structure of metal salen complexes. Another significant finding is the thermal fluctuation of a salen ligand arising from the mismatched ligand-metal interaction, which has a significant impact on fluorescence lifetime. The present study sheds light on hidden factors that alter photophysical properties of a metal salen complex, which provide valuable insights into designing new photoactive salen ligands.

Abstract
Charge-transfer emitters are attractive due to their color tunability and potentially high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). We herein present tetraaminospirenes as donor moieties, which, in combination with a variety of acceptors, furnished 12 charge-transfer emitters with a range of emission colors and PLQYs of up to 99 %. The spatial separation of their frontier molecular orbitals was obtained through careful structural design, and two DA structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. A range of photophysical measurements supported by DFT calculations shed light on the optoelectronic properties of this new family of spiro-NN-donor-acceptor dyes.

Abstract
Earth-abundant and cheaper zinc-based organometallic molecules as luminophores are drawing significant research attention for solid-state lighting devices. In this paper, we report two air-stable zinc complexes, where the zinc is coordinated to two sterically encumbered β-diketiminate ligands in a tetrahedral geometry. In such a geometry, eight phenyl/aryl rings from the ligand backbones are oriented in a propeller shape, augmenting the restricted rotation of the putative rings. Such an architecture harnesses aggregation-induced emission behavior with an excellent solid-state emission property. The rigidity of these molecules reduces the possibility of non-radiative transitions and makes them excellent fluorescence emitters. Both molecules exhibit electroluminescence (EL) in the yellowish-green region of the visible spectrum. We have utilized these molecules as emitters to fabricate multilayered organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. The emitter Zn-I in host m-MTDATA exhibits EL with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 4.4%. Among the handful of zinc-based OLEDs, the performance of this emitter is very commendable with power and current efficacies of 15.2 lm W-1 and 12.1 cd A-1, respectively, along with a brightness of 2426 cd m-2.

Abstract
Two Zn(ii) complexes, K1 and K2, obtained from the template reaction of zinc(ii) acetate dihydrate with o-phenylenediamine and 2-hydroxy-5-methylisophthalaldehyde (K1) or 2-hydroxy-5-tert-butyl-1,3-benzenedicarboxaldehyde (K2), respectively, were characterized by X-ray crystallography, spectroscopic (UV-vis, fluorescence and IR), and thermal methods. In the complex [Zn2(MeO)1.4(OH)0.6(L1)]·2H2O K1, there are two binding sites in the macrocyclic ligand and they are occupied by zinc(ii) cations found in slightly distorted square pyramidal environment. The zinc(ii) cations are connected by slightly asymmetric oxo bridges with a Zn1–O14–Zn1[−x, −y + 1, −z + 1] angle of 104.8(2)°. In the dimer [Zn2(CH3COO)2(L2)]·2EtOH K2, there are two crystallographically independent binding sites both occupied by zinc(ii) cations. There is a significant difference between both complexes, since in K1 only one site is independent and the second is occupied due to the application of symmetry rules, and the geometry of both sites is identical. Thin layers of the obtained Zn(ii) complexes were deposited on Si(111) by the spin coating method and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), fluorescence spectroscopy and ellipsometry. In the non-absorbing range, the value of the refractive index exhibits normal dispersion between 1.8 and 2.1 for K1_1–K1_3; and between 2.3 and 2.6 for the K2 series of samples established for long wavelengths (longer than 500 nm). The Zn(ii) complexes and their thin layers exhibited fluorescence between 534–573 nm and 495–572 nm for the compounds and the layers, respectively. The highest quantum yield of fluorescence was achieved for K2 in benzene and in the solid state ϕ = 0.78 and 0.58, respectively. The influence of the solvent polarity on the fluorescence properties of the obtained complexes was studied. Additionally, DFT calculations were performed to explain the structures and electronic spectral properties of the complexes. Tin fluorescent materials were obtained using a spin coating method.![]()

Abstract
Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) compounds display a photophysical phenomenon in which the aggregate state exhibits stronger emission than the isolated units. The common term of "AIEgens" was coined to describe compounds undergoing the AIE effect. Due to the recent interest in AIEgens, the search for novel hybrid organic-inorganic compounds with unique luminescence properties in the aggregate phase is a relevant goal. In this perspective, the abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic d10 zinc cation offers unique opportunities for building AIE active fluorophores, sensing probes, and bioimaging tools. Considering the novelty of the topic, relevant examples collected in the last 5 years (2016-2021) through scientific production can be considered fully representative of the state-of-the-art. Starting from the simple phenomenological approach and considering different typological and chemical units and structures, we focused on zinc-based AIEgens offering synthetic novelty, research completeness, and relevant applications. A special section was devoted to Zn(II)-based AIEgens for living cell imaging as the novel technological frontier in biology and medicine.

Abstract
In the present research, the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and structural investigations of a unique ZnII complex of imine-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) is designed, and hereby described, as a catalyst for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2. The uncommon features of the designed catalytic system is the elimination of the need for a high pressure of CO2 and the significant shortening of reaction times commonly associated with such difficult transformations like that of styrene oxide to styrene carbonate. Our studies have shown that imine-POSS is able to chelate metal ions like ZnII to form a unique coordination complex. The silsesquioxane core and the hindrance of the side arms (their steric effect) influence the construction process of the homoleptic Zn4@POSS-1 complex. The compound was characterized in solution by NMR (1H, 13C, 29Si), ESI-MS, UV/Vis spectroscopy and in the solid state by thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP MAS) NMR (13C, 29Si) spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Four D-A type Zn(ii) coordination complexes, [Zn(C29H29N3O2)·(CH3OH)]·(CH3OH) (1), Zn2(C74H90N6O4)·(CH3OH) (2), [Zn(C30H28N4O2)·(CH3OH)]·(CH3OH) (3) and [Zn(C38H44N4O2)·(C2H5OH)]·(C2H5OH) (4), were designed, synthesized, and studied. Their fluorescence properties in the solid state and in THF solution were comprehensively analysed based on their single-crystal structures. The results showed that the red-shift of fluorescence emission from complexes 1 to 4 was successfully achieved via the strategy of enhancing intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effects by increasing the number of electron-pulling and pushing groups gradually. Meanwhile, because of the fluorescence recognition abilities of these four complexes towards iodide anions in THF, they could be regarded as potential fluorescent sensors for I- in this organic solution in the future.

Abstract
In this work, we present the synthesis of a novel Zn-Salphen complex containing an allyl group, which was used as building block in the further preparation of a new family of functional terpolymers. These polymers were obtained through radical co-polymerization with methyl metacrylate (MMA) and n-butyl acrylate (nBuA) in different ratios. The supramolecular recognition behavior of each polymer was evaluated via potentiometric measurements against selected anions in aqueous media. Interestingly, this proof of concept study shows that these systems were selective against only fluoride (F−) or both, fluoride and acetate (OAc−), by tailoring the relative content of Zn-Salphen monomer, thus making them a promising starting point for modular design of chemical sensors through straightforward synthetic approaches.

New complexes of Zn(ii), Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) with Schiff bases are prepared in a one-step condensation of 4-(dibutylamino)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 4,5-diaminophthalonitrile in the presence of a metal salt. The complexes possess efficient absorption in the blue-green part of the spectrum with molar absorption coefficients up to 98 000 M-1 cm-1. The Pt(ii) complex shows very strong red phosphorescence in anoxic solutions at room temperature with a quantum yield of 65% in toluene which places it among the brightest emitters available for this spectral range. The phosphorescence of the Pd(ii) complex under the same conditions is very weak (Φ < 1%) but is enhanced to Φ > 10% upon immobilization into polymers. Optical thermometers based on self-referenced lifetime read-out are prepared upon immobilization of the dyes into gas-blocking poly(vinylidene chloride-co-acrylonitrile). At 25 °C, the materials based on Pd(ii) and Pt(ii) complexes show sensitivities of -2.1 and -0.52%τ/K, respectively. Application of the sensors for imaging of temperature on surfaces (planar optode) and for monitoring of fast temperature fluctuations (fiber-optic microsensor) is demonstrated. Immobilized into a gas-permeable matrix, the Pt(ii) complex also performs as a promising oxygen-sensing material. The new systems are also attractive for imaging of oxygen or temperature with the help of multi-photon microscopy, due to a good match with the biological optical window and much better brightness under two photon excitation compared to that of the conventional Pt(ii) meso-tetra-(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin.
