Abstract
BACKGROUND Hypochlorite/hypochlorous acid (ClO-/HOCl) is a biologically crucial reactive oxygen species (ROS), produced in living organisms and has a critical role as an antimicrobial agent in the natural defense system. However, when ClO- is produced excessively, it can lead to the oxidative damage of biomolecules, resulting in organ damage and various diseases. Therefore, it is imperative to have a straightforward, quick and reliable method for over watching the minimum amount of ClO- in different environments. RESULTS Herein, a new probe TTM, containing thienothiophene and malononitrile units, was developed for exceptionally selective and sensitive hypochlorite (ClO-) detection. TTM demonstrated a rapid "turn-on" fluorescence response (<30 s), naked-eye detection (colorimetric), voltammetric read-out with anodic scan, low detection limit (LOD = 0.58 μM and 1.43 μM for optical and electrochemical methods, respectively) and applicability in detecting ClO- in real water samples and living cells. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY This study represents one of the rare examples of a small thienothiophene-based molecule for both optical and electrochemical detections of ClO- in an aqueous medium.

Abstract
Two anthracene-based zirconium metal-organic frameworks (UiO-68-AN-fcu and UiO-68-AN-hcp) with blue emission were synthesized by the solvothermal reaction of ZrCl4 with anthracene-based ligand 4,4'-(9,10-anthracenediyl)dibenzoic acid. The two MOFs inherited the luminescence properties of anthracene-based ligand and exhibited different topologies due to the change of connection mode of Zr-O clusters. The two stable anthracene-based zirconium MOFs served as luminescent sensors for selectively detecting 2-nitrophenol, Fe3+ and Cr2O72-. UiO-68-AN-hcp with flower morphology exhibited stronger quenching effect for 2-nitrophenol, Fe3+ and Cr2O72- by comparing to UiO-68-AN-fcu. Adsorption tests, fluorescence lifetime and spectroscopy studies demonstrated that the fluorescence responses of MOFs for analytes can be primarily attributed to the dynamic quenching mechanism involving energy and electron transfer. These results revealed that the combination of luminescent anthracene-based ligand and Zr-O clusters is a feasible strategy to construst MOFs-based fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
Nowadays, the fabrication of 2D metal-organic nanosheets (2D MONs) has entered the research arena fascinating researchers worldwide. However, a lack of efficient and facile methods has remained a bottleneck for the manufacturing of these 2D MONs. Herein, a 2D metal-organic framework (MOF), i.e., 2D Cu-MOF, was synthesized using a facile and convenient stirring method by using 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (TMDP) as an organic linker. The as-prepared MOF was characterized in detail and based on single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, it was established that tangled layers in the 2D Cu-MOF are interconnected to produce thick strands. These tangled layers could be easily separated via ultrasonication-induced liquid phase exfoliation (UILPE) to give the 2D Cu-MON as illustrated through Tyndall light scattering and exhaustive microscopic exploration such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The application of this 2D Cu-MON was assessed in the field of drug delivery revealing exceptional drug loading for the drug lansoprazole (LPZ) by 2D Cu-MONs as well as drug release in the acidic and neutral medium demonstrating that the 2D Cu-MON is an excellent carrier for antiulcer drug delivery. For environmental protection, the application of 2D Cu-MON was also examined toward the removal of various cationic and anionic dyes with excellent selectivity toward cationic dye removal. The plausible mechanism for dye removal indicated the involvement of cation-π and π-π interactions, for the effective adsorption of cationic dyes as well as a increase in the surface area of 2D Cu-MON by UILPE. Remarkably, the high drug loading and dye removal are imputed to the increase in surface area by UILPE. In a nutshell, the developed 2D Cu-MON will prove to be beneficial for application in the field of drug delivery as well as for wastewater treatment.

Abstract
The potential emergence of fluorescence-based techniques has propelled research towards developing probes that can sense trace metal ions specifically. Although luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are well suited for this application, the role of building blocks towards detection is not fully understood. In this work, a systematic screening by varying number of Lewis basic (pyridyl-N atoms) sites is carried out in a series of isostructural, robust UiO-67 MOFs, and targeting a model metal ion-Fe3+ . All the three fluorescent MOFs are seen to present quenching response towards Fe3+ ions in water. However, UiO-67@N exhibits highly selective and sensitive response, whereas emission of both UiO-67 and UiO-67@NN is quenched by several metal ions. Detailed experimental and theoretical mechanistic investigation is carried out in addition to demonstration of UiO-67@N being able to sense trace amount of Fe3+ ions in synthetic biological water sample. Further, UiO-67@N based mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) has been prepared and employed to mimic the real time Fe3+ ions detection in water.

Abstract
Herein, we revealed the factors that affect the emission in mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the combination of terephthalic acid (BDC), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (BDC-NH2), and 2,5-dihydroxylterephthalic acid [BDC-(OH)2] as models. The -NH2 and -(OH)2 groups change the π-conjugation and luminescence behaviors than BDC, so the ligands show different optical behaviors. The Zn2+ ion with a 3d10 full electronic structure shows little effect on the emission of the ligand and is selected as the metal node. We found that the emission of BDC is weak and incompatible to that of BDC-NH2, so only the emission of BDC-NH2 was observed in the BDC/BDC-NH2-MOF. Crosstalk occurs between the emissions from BDC and BDC-(OH)2 for the single emission from BDC/BDC-(OH)2-MOFs, even different ratios are selected. The MOFs prepared with BDC-NH2 and BDC-(OH)2 show dual emission at 450 and 550 nm, while the relative intensity was easily tuned with the ligand ratio and excitation wavelength. Thus, abundant optical behaviors and extensive applications were realized, including but not limited to (1) dual emission from single MOFs, (2) tunable color from blue to yellow with the excitation from 290 to 370 nm for information encryption and decryption, (3) white emission obtained under an excitation of 330 nm, and (4) response of -NH2 groups to HCHO and Fe3+ ions for ratiometric fluorescence sensing and visual detection. This work revealed the factors that affect the emission in mixed-ligand MOFs, studied their optical behaviors, and realized different applications with single MOFs.

Abstract
In this work, a series of bimetallic Cd/Zr-UiO-66 materials were successfully synthesized for fluorescence sensing toward traces of As5+ and Fe3+ via a one-pot method. Interestingly, the obtained bimetallic Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) can be served as turn-on probe for As5+ as well as turn-off probe for Fe3+. The LODs of Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) toward As5+ and Fe3+ were calculated to be 5.4 μM and 4.3 μM, respectively, indicating its effective sensing properties for As5+ and Fe3+ in methanol media. Moreover, even in the presence of other potentially interfering toxic metal ions such as As3+, Cd2+ and Pb2+, Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) still presented good anti-interference abilities. Additionally, the removal efficiency of Cd/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) toward As5+ was higher than 70% when the initial As5+ was lower than 50 mg/L. The fluorescence quenching of Fe3+ were mainly due to the competitive absorption of excitation source and RET, while the ACE mechanism was mostly responsible for the enhancement of As5+. More importantly, this job might pave the way for future researches and applications on sensing As5+ and Fe3+.

Abstract
Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) as chemosensors, can sense various analytes, such as heavy metal ions, antibiotics, pesticides, and small biological molecules. Based on the fluorescence characteristics of LMOFs, a variety of logic gates have been developed. In this review, we mainly discuss some common logic systems based on LMOFs, and then summarize the strategies of constructing logic gates from two perspectives. One is based on superior characteristics of MOFs, which can be synthesized from Ln3+ based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) or form hybrids by encapsulating different materials, including metal ions, dyes, and quantum dots (QDs). The other is to control the presence of inputs by reactions between different reactants and then further control switches of logic gates. Additionally, the common sensing mechanisms of LMOFs in logic gates are discussed. In the end, we have envisioned MOFs that possess a promising future in logic computing areas.

Abstract
Porous coordination polymers with organic aminium as one of the guest species possess a potential application in dye adsorption and white-light material manufacture. Polycarboxylic acid with multiple COOH substituents tends to form this type of porous material (with metal ion). Here the solvothermal self-assembly between Cd2+ and a hexacarboxylic acid creates such a porous material [(CH3)2NH2]6[Cd3(L)2]·5DMF·3H2O (H6L = 3,4-di(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)phthalic acid) 1. Total potential guest accessible void volume in 3-D 1 is found to be 4327 Å3. Based on its better porous structure and stability, the ability of 1 to adsorb organic dyes is investigated. It has been proved that (i) 1 can selectively adsorb cationic dyes as Azure A (AA+) and/or Methylene Blue (MB+), rather than neutral and anionic ones; (ii) the maximum adsorption capacity is 698.2 mg·g-1 for AA+ and 573.2 mg·g-1 for MB+, respectively; and (iii) to the adsorption of AA+, it can be recycled for at least five rounds. Also, it is utilized to fabricate the while-light emitting material. Based on the blue-light emission of 1, the trace Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions are introduced into the pores of 1 successfully, obtaining a white-light emitting material Eu3+/Tb3+@1 (CIE chromaticity coordinates: (0.33, 0.32)). Meanwhile, Eu3+/Tb3+@1 is found to be a potential fluorescence photochromic material, showing a yellow-white-blue light emission. According to these investigations, the relationship between material structure and its adsorption property for dyes, the points that should be paid attention to in the construction of white-light emitting materials as well as the potential adsorption mechanism for dyes and rare earth ions are deeply discussed.

Abstract
The discharge of excessive metal ions and anions into water bodies leads to the serious pollution of water and environment, which in turn has a certain impact on industry, agriculture, and human life. Because of the unique advantages of luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs), they have been successfully explored as various fluorescent probes to quickly and effectively detect these pollutants. This perspective not only introduces the design strategy and classification of LMOFs, especially the construction methods of water-stable LMOFs, but also reports the latest progresses in some LMOFs between 2016 and 2020 as well as expounds the mechanisms of LMOFs for detecting anions and cations. Moreover, the luminescence properties of LMOFs are related to the selection of metal ions, the structure of organic ligands, the pore size, and the interaction of guest molecules. Finally, the further development of LMOFs is summarized and prospected in this field.

RSC Adv 2021; 11:36913-36919. [PMID: 35494380 PMCID: PMC9043824 DOI: 10.1039/d1ra06592k] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Download PDF] [Figures] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/02/2021] [Accepted: 10/25/2021] [Indexed: 11/30/2022] Open
Abstract
A novel anionic Cd(ii)-based metal–organic framework, H2[Cd9(DDB)4(BPP)4(H2O)14]·4H2O·2DMA (1), was successfully obtained with a rigid carboxylate ligand 3,5-di(2′,4′-dicarboxylphenyl)benzoic acid (H5DDB) and a flexible pyridyl ligand 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane (BPP). Complex 1 contains two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb structures and one-dimensional (1D) chain structures. The adjacent 2D structures are linked by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form an ABAB 3D supramolecular structure, where the 1D chain structures traverse the channels of the 2D structures. Due to the anionic framework, Ln(iii) ions (Ln = Eu and Tb) can be encapsulated in the framework of 1 by a post-synthetic modification process to obtain Ln(iii)@1, where 1.09Eu(iii)@1 (1a) and 0.658Tb(iii)@1 (1b) can be obtained by soaking complex 1 in a Eu(NO3)3·6H2O or Tb(NO3)3·6H2O aqueous solution for 48 h. The liquid-state emission spectra of Ln(iii)@1 can be tuned to be a white light emission by changing the Eu(iii)/Tb(iii) molar ratio in solution. Moreover, 1b can be used as a “turn-off” fluorescent probe for bilirubin with a low detection limit of 0.250 μM in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.4), which presents excellent sensitivity, high selectivity, and reusability. Furthermore, the devised fluorescent probe in serum also exhibits the fluorescence “turn-off” process with a low detection limit of 0.279 μM, and the recovery rate of bilirubin is 99.20–101.9%. The possible mechanisms of the fluorescence “turn-off” process can be explained by resonance energy transfer, and the weak interaction between 1b and bilirubin. A novel anionic Cd(ii)-based metal–organic framework was used toencapsulateLn(iii) ions, which exhibits tunable luminescence and selective sensing of bilirubin.![]()

Abstract
A 2-D copper(ii)-based coordination polymer, [Cu(SCN)(hmp)]n CP (1), was crystallized via the slow evaporation method after the reaction of CuSO4·5H2O, 2-pyridinemethanol (hmpH), sodium thiocyanate and sodium hydroxide in water for functional applications. CP (1) was characterized via elemental analysis, FTIR, PXRD, magnetic, EPR, crystallographic and TGA studies. The crystal structure and EPR data confirmed a square pyramidal geometry around the Cu(ii) ions. The topological analysis revealed that CP 1 has a {6^3} point symbol with a [6.6.6] extended point symbol and 3-c net, uninodal net having hcb and Shubnikov hexagonal plane net/(6,3) type of uncommon topology. The magnetic studies suggested the strong antiferromagnetic nature of CP (1). The fluorescence sensing property of CP (1) was investigated with different nitro aromatic compounds and hazardous metal ions. CP (1) demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity towards nitrobenzene, even in the presence of other competitive nitro aromatics. In addition, CP (1) showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward Fe3+ over other metal ions. The possible detection mechanisms were proposed employing UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy and DFT calculations. CP (1) also showed excellent recyclability towards both analytes, and its initial intensity was almost regained after several washings. Moreover, CP (1) acted as an excellent adsorbent material for natural dyes with different charges and sizes, i.e., methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine-B. Furthermore, CP (1) was utilized repeatedly for the effective adsorption of MB from wastewater without significant loss in its adsorption capacity. Hence, the present CP (1) was designed to relate coordination chemistry with various functional applications of interest.

Abstract
A new HfIV -based metal-organic framework with UiO-66 topology was synthesized via a one-step solvothermal method by using 3-methyl-4-phenylthieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2 MPTDC) as a ligand. The MOF material showed a high stability in a broad pH range (from pH 2 to pH 12) in an aqueous medium. The presence of hydrophobic methyl and phenyl substituents in the carboxylic acid ligand and strong Hf-O bond play crucial roles in its stability. The new MOF material was systematically characterized by various techniques such as XRPD, N2 sorption, thermogravimetric analyses and FT-IR spectroscopy. The photophysical properties of the MOF material were also examined by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies. It was observed that the blue fluorescence of the MOF material was selectively quenched in the presence of Fe3+ ion in pure aqueous medium. A mechanistic study disclosed that quenching occurs via a strong inner filter effect (IFE) arising from Fe3+ ion in aqueous medium. Interestingly, the fluorescence of the MOF material can be recovered by elimination of the IFE of Fe3+ ion via reduction of Fe3+ ion by ascorbic acid (AA). Based on the fluorescence recovery by AA, a MOF based on-off-on probe was developed for the sensing of Fe3+ ion and AA in aqueous medium. Inspired by this reversible sensing event, we demonstrate basic (NOT, OR, YES, INHIBIT and IMP) and higher integrated logic operations utilizing this fluorescent MOF. This MOF-based logic systems could be potentially used for next-generation logic-gate based analytical applications as well as for the detection and discrimination of targeted molecules in various complex domains.

Abstract
Two novel metal-organic frameworks, formulated as [Mn(CIP-)2] (1) and [Ag(CIP-)] (2) (HCIP = 4-(4-carboxylphenyl)-2,6-di(4-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)pyridine), were solvothermally synthesized based on a pyridyl-imidazole-carboxyl multifunctional ligand. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that complex 1 is a 3D microporous framework with uncoordinated imidazole groups, and complex 2 is a 2D + 2D → 2D 3-fold parallel interpenetrated network. Complex 1 exhibited excellent CO2 selective absorption over N2 and CH4. IAST calculations revealed that the selectivities of 1 for the CO2/CH4 (50 : 50) and CO2/N2 (15 : 85) mixtures were 8.0 and 117 at 273 K under 1 bar, respectively. Moreover, the luminescence investigations displayed that complex 2 is an excellent MOF-based multiresponsive fluorescent probe for Fe3+, CrO42-/Cr2O72- and the pesticide 2,6-Dich-4-nitroaniline, with high selectivity and sensitivity. Notably, complex 2 exhibited a highly sensitive sensing ability (5.2 × 104 M-1) and a low detection limit (1.7 × 10-7 M) for 2,6-Dich-4-nitroaniline. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first Ag-MOF-based fluorescent sensor that can simultaneously detect metal ions, inorganic anions and pesticides.
