Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently drawn intense attention due to their potential applications in photocatalysis. Herein, we report a multifunctional COF which consists of triphenylamine (TPA) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2, 2'-bipy) entities. The obtained TAPA-BPy-COF is a heterogeneous photocatalyst and can efficiently catalyze the oxidative coupling of thiols to disulfides. In addition, TAPA-BPy-COF can be further metalated by Pd(II) via 2,2'-bipy-metal coordination. The generated Pd@TAPA-BPy-COF can highly promote photocatalytic synthesis of 3-cyanopyridines via cascade addition/cyclization of arylboronic acids with γ-ketodinitriles in heterogeneous way. This work has demonstrated the way for the rational design and preparation of more efficient photoactive COFs for photocatalysis.

Abstract
Herein, we report a one-pot method for enantioselective C-H allylation of pyridines at C3 via tandem borane and palladium catalysis. This method involves borane-catalyzed pyridine hydroboration to generate dihydropyridines, then palladium-catalyzed enantioselective allylation of the dihydropyridines with allylic esters, and finally air oxidation of the allylated dihydropyridines to afford the products. This method enables the introduction of an allylic group at C3 with excellent regio- and enantioselectivities.

Abstract
The novel selenoviologen-based tetracationic cyclophanes (green boxes 3 and 5) with rigid electron-deficient cavities are synthesized via SN2 reactions in two steps. The green boxes exhibit good redox properties, narrow energy gaps, and strong absorption in the visible range (370-470 nm), especially for the green box 5 containing two selenoviologen (SeV2+) units. Meanwhile, the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) reveals that the green boxes have a stabilized dicationic biradical, high efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and long-lived charge separation state due to the formation of cyclophane structure. Based on the excellent photophysical and redox properties, the green boxes are applied to electrochromic devices (ECDs) and visible-light-driven hydrogen production with a high H2 generation rate (34 μmol/h), turnover number (203), and apparent quantum yield (5.33 × 10-2). In addition, the host-guest recognitions are demonstrated between the green boxes and electron-rich guests (e.g., G1:1-naphthol and G2:platinum(II)-tethered naphthalene) in MeCN through C-H···π and π···π interactions. As a one-component system, the host-guest complexes of green box⊃G2 are successfully applied to visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production due to the intramolecular electron transfer (IET) between platinum(II) of G2 and SeV2+ of the green box, which provides a simplified system for solar energy conversion.

Abstract
A light-triggered synthesis of thio-functionalized pyridines is demonstrated using γ-ketodinitriles, thiols, and eosin Y as the photocatalyst. The reaction proceeds via the selective attack on one of the cyano groups by an in situ generated thiyl radical. The reaction also proceeds with nearly equal efficiency using direct sunlight. Large-scale synthesis and a few useful synthetic transformations of the substituted pyridines are also performed.

Abstract
Pyridine halogenation reactions are crucial for obtaining the vast array of derivatives required for drug and agrochemical development. However, despite more than a century of synthetic endeavors, halogenation processes that selectively functionalize the carbon-hydrogen bond in the 3-position of a broad range of pyridine precursors remain largely elusive. We report a reaction sequence of pyridyl ring opening, halogenation, and ring closing whereby the acyclic Zincke imine intermediates undergo highly regioselective halogenation reactions under mild conditions. Experimental and computational mechanistic studies indicate that the nature of the halogen electrophile can modify the selectivity-determining step. Using this method, we produced a diverse set of 3-halopyridines and demonstrated late-stage halogenation of complex pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals.

Abstract
The functionalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) via B←N Lewis pair formation offers an opportunity to judiciously fine-tune the structural features and optoelectronic properties, to suit the demands of applications in organic electronic devices, bioimaging, and as sensitizers for singlet oxygen generation. We demonstrate that the N-directed electrophilic borylation of 2,6-di(pyrid-2-yl)anthracene offers access to linearly extended acene derivatives Py-BR (R=Et, Ph, C6 F5 ). In comparison to indeno-fused 9,10-diphenylanthracene, the formal "BN for CC" replacement in Py-BR selectively lowers the LUMO, resulting in a much reduced HOMO-LUMO gap. An even more extended conjugated system with seven six-membered rings in a row (Qu-BEt) is obtained by borylation of 2,6-di(quinolin-8-yl)anthracene. Fluorinated Py-BPf shows particularly advantageous properties, including relatively lower-lying HOMO and LUMO levels, strong yellow-green fluorescence, and effective singlet oxygen sensitization, while resisting self-sensitized conversion to its endoperoxide.

Abstract
Lewis-base coordinated iminoborane adducts, in contrast to their isoelectronic analogue imines, remain largely unexplored given the lack of efficient synthetic strategies for generating robust compounds. Herein, we report the preparation of a cyclic amino iminoborane carbene complex 2 obtained in quantitative yield by adding NHC to the 1,8-(trimethylsilyl)aminonaphthalene complex of boron 1 to induce the elimination of trimethylsilyl chloride (TMSCl). The iminoborane-NHC adduct 2 shows unprecedented thermal stability both in the solid and solution phases, due to the rigid, pre-established geometry of the 1,8-diaminonaphthalene scaffold. Theoretical calculations reveal an exceptionally strong iminoborane-NHC bond as a consequence of the enhanced boron-center acidity in combination with the lower steric and electronic shielding. We show that the chemical bond can be understood as donor-acceptor interaction, leading to a different kind of electronic situation of the B═N π-bond. The high conjugation between the pz-lone pair of the tricoordinated sp2 hybridized N atom and the B═N π-system results in a particularly long B═N double bond distance. Taking advantage of the pendant lone pair of the dicoordinated sp2 hybridized N atom, the iminoborane-NHC adduct gives access to NHC-stabilized borenium cation 3 through the reaction with trimethylsilyl triflate (Me3SiOTf) or to the gallium adduct 4 by reacting with GaCl3. Incorporating an iminoborane functional group into a π-conjugated system brings a new bonding situation for broadening the scope of BN-containing polyaromatic systems.

Abstract
The introduction of unconventional elements into π-conjugated systems has been studied to manipulate the electronic states and properties of compounds. Herein, boron- and germanium-containing hybrid macrocycles, as a new class of element-hybrid conjugated systems, have been synthesized. The palladium-catalyzed Stille cross coupling of bis(bromothienyl)borane and bis(trimethylstannylthienyl)- or bis(trimethylstannylphenyl)-substituted dithienogermoles as the boron- and germanium-containing building blocks, respectively, produced a mixture of several macrocyclic compounds. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of the 2:2 coupling product revealed a planar structure with a cavity inside the macrocycle. The optical properties of the macrocyclic products indicated rather small electronic interactions between the building units. However, intramolecular photoenergy transfer from the dithienogermole unit to the boron unit was clearly observed with respect to the fluorescence spectra.

Abstract
AbstractOrganic electronics are at the forefront of modern research, with goals of creating more efficient and environmentally benign devices. Organic molecules can achieve this as they typically result in materials that are solution-processable and less toxic than their transition-metal counterparts. Electrochromic molecules have unique color changing properties upon passing an electrical current making them highly sought after for colored displays, dimming mirrors, and smart windows. Part of my PhD work was devoted to developing a new class of electrochromic molecules, the phosphoryl-bridged viologens, with more favorable redox properties and new color changing modes. In order to understand the necessity and potential of new electrochromes, it is important to assess the history of the field and its future. In addition to designing new molecules for electrochromic devices, it is equally important to design a multifunctional species with a bright, competitive future across various organic electronic applications.

Abstract
Herein, we report our experimental and computational investigations on a stable and modifiable As-bridged dipyridinoheterole, dipyridinoarsole. Oxidation of the arsenic atom changes the frontier orbital energies and quaternization of nitrogen atoms produces electrochromic materials. Dipyridinoarsole is suitable for practical applications due to its superior stability compared to its phosphole analogues.

C–PC framework has been established. Compounds 3a and 3b have a remarkably small HOMO–LUMO energy gap (3a: 5.09; 3b: 5.05 eV) with a very high-lying HOMO (−4.95 eV for each). Consequently, 3a and 3b readily undergo one-electron oxidation with the mild oxidizing agent GaCl3 to afford radical cations [{(IPr)C(Ph)}P(cAACR)]GaCl4 (R = Me 4a, Cy 4b) as crystalline solids. The main UV-vis absorption band for 4a and 4b is red-shifted with respect to that of 3a and 3b, which is associated with the SOMO related transitions. The EPR spectra of compounds 4a and 4b each exhibit a doublet due to coupling of the unpaired electron with the 31P nucleus. Further one-electron removal from the radical cations 4a and 4b is also feasible with GaCl3, affording the dications [{(IPr)C(Ph)}P(cAACR)](GaCl4)2 (R = Me 5a, Cy 5b) as yellow crystals. The molecular structures of compounds 3–5 have been determined by X-ray diffraction and analyzed by DFT calculations. The 2-phospha-1,3-butadiene derivatives 3 are readily accessible by reduction of 2 with Mg. Sequential one-electron oxidation of 3 with GaCl3 leads to the formation of radical cations 4 and dications 5 as crystalline solids.![]()

Abstract
A modular route to previously inaccessible classes of ring-fused π-extended heteroacenes bearing the heavy inorganic element tellurium (Te) is presented. These new materials can be viewed as n-doped analogs of molecular graphene subunits that exhibit color tunable visible light phosphorescence in the solid state and in the presence of air. The general mechanism of phosphorescence in these systems was probed experimentally and computationally via time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The incorporation of Te into π-extended oligoacene frameworks was achieved by an efficient Zr/Te transmetalation protocol; related zirconium-element exchange reactions have been used to prepare both electron-rich and electron-deficient heterocycles containing different elements from throughout the p-block. Therefore, the current study provides a clear path to incorporate inorganic elements into heteroacenes of greater complexity and side group selectivity compared to existing synthetic routes.

Abstract
The first examples of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and cyclic(alkyl)(amino) carbene (CAAC) stabilized borepinium and borafluorenium heterocycles are reported herein. The optical properties of the heterocyclic borenium cations were tuned by varying the Lewis base and by changing the number of atoms in the ring. More importantly, functionalizing the cationic boron ring system in the NHC-borafluorenium cation affords a temperature-sensitive molecule with reversible colorimetric "turn off/turn on" properties in solution. Notably, this is the first report of thermochromism in these cationic species. This property, which is mediated by an intermolecular boron-oxygen bond equilibrium, was examined in detail by X-ray crystallography, variable temperature-UV/Vis absorption spectroscopy (VT-UV/Vis), and density functional theory (DFT).

Abstract
Rationally designed cationic phospha-polyaromatic fluorophores were prepared through intramolecular cyclization of the tertiary ortho-(acene)phenylene-phosphines mediated by CuII triflate. As a result of phosphorus quaternization, heterocyclic phosphonium salts 1 c-3 c, derived from naphthalene, phenanthrene, and anthracene cores, exhibited very intense blue to green fluorescence (Φem =0.38-0.99) and high photostability in aqueous medium. The structure-emission relationship was further investigated by tailoring the electron-donating functions to the anthracene moiety to give dyes 4 c-6 c with charge-transfer character. The latter significantly decreases the emission energy to reach near-IR region. Thus, the intramolecular phosphacyclization renders an ultra-wide tuning of fluorescence from 420 nm (1 c) to 780 nm (6 c) in solution, extended to 825 nm for 6 c in the solid state with quantum efficiency of approximately 0.07. The physical behavior of these new dyes was studied spectroscopically, crystallographically, and electrochemically, whereas computational analysis was used to correlate the experimental data with molecular electronic structures. The excellent stability, water solubility, and attractive photophysical characteristics make these phosphonium heterocycles powerful tools in cell imaging.

Abstract
Functionalization of a methylviologen with four methyl ester substituents significantly facilitates the first two reduction steps. The easily generated radical cation shows markedly improved air stability compared to the parent methylviologen, making this derivative of interest in organic electronic applications.

Abstract
The synthesis of the first bismuth-containing macromolecules that exhibit phosphorescence in the solid state and in the presence of oxygen is reported. These red emissive high molecular weight polymers (>300 kDa) feature benzobismoles appended to a hydrocarbon scaffold, and were built via an efficient ring-opening metathesis (ROMP) protocol. Moreover, our general procedure readily allows for the formation of cross-linked networks and block copolymers. Attaining stable red phosphorescence with non-toxic elements remains a challenge and, thus, our new class of soluble (processable) polymeric phosphor is of great interest. Furthermore, the formation of bismuth-rich cores within organic-inorganic block copolymer spherical micelles is possible, leading to patterned arrays of bismuth in the film state.

Abstract
2,3,4,5-Tetraaryl-1-phenylarsoles were synthesized by utilizing safely generated diiodophenylarsine and zirconacyclopentadienes. The obtained peraryl arsoles showed aggregation-induced emission (AIE), where intense emission was observed in the solid states (quantum yields up to 0.61), whereas the corresponding solutions were very weakly emissive. The optical and electronic properties were examined by experimental and computational methods. It was elucidated that the aryl groups at the 2,5-positions affected the frontier orbitals and the aromaticity of the arsole core. On the other hand, those at the 1,3,5-positions were perpendicular to the luminophore and effective for a restriction of aggregation-caused quenching. Because the lone pair of the arsenic atom has a sufficient coordination ability due to the low aromaticity of the arsole moiety, a gold(I) chloride complex of 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylarsole was synthesized. The complex formation caused a blue shift of the emission from the bare ligand. Interestingly, the complex showed luminescent mechanochromism; grinding the crystals with a blue emission (λem =445 nm) gave amorphous samples with a greenish-blue emission (λem =496 nm).
