Interfacial complexation driven three-dimensional assembly of cationic phosphorus dendrimers and graphene oxide sheets

Pyromellitic acid grafted to cross-linked LDH by dendritic units: An efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst for green synthesis of 2,3-dihydro quinazoline and dihydropyrimidinones derivatives

In this work, using layered double hydroxide (LDH) inorganic substrate, melamine as binding agent and dendrimer G1 and also pyromellitic acid (PMA) organic catalytic agent a heterogeneous acid catalyst was designed and prepared. After that, the prepared organic-inorganic catalyst was evaluated by various identification techniques such as FTIR, EDX, XRD, TGA, FESEM, and BET, and the results showed that the desired structure was successfully prepared. Also, in order to investigate the efficiency of the LDH@Me-PMA nanocatalyst as an efficient and heterogeneous catalyst, it was used for green and one-pot synthesis of 2,3-dihydro quinazoline and 3,4-dihydropyrimidinone-2-(1H)-ones derivatives. The use of LDH@Me-PMA catalyst led to the synthesis of the desired derivatives with higher efficiency and shorter reaction time than previously reported works. In addition, the prepared LDH@Me-PMA acid catalyst has the ability to be recycled and reused for 5 consecutive periods and has high stability, which is well consistent with the principles of green chemistry.

Fabrication of nanosheet-assembled hollow copper-nickel phosphide spheres embedded in reduced graphene oxide texture for hybrid supercapacitors

Owing to their metalloid characteristics with high electrical conductivity, transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted considerable research attention as prospective cathodes for hybrid supercapacitors. Unfortunately, they usually exhibit low rate performance as well as poor longevity, which does not meet the demands of hybrid supercapacitors. The nanocomposite constructed from reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and TMPs with a highly porous nature can effectively overcome the above-mentioned issues, greatly widening their utilization. In this work, we fabricated nanosheet-assembled hollow copper-nickel phosphide spheres (NH-CNPSs) by the controllable phosphatizing of copper-nickel-ethylene glycol (CN-EG) precursors. Then, porous NH-CNPSs were embedded in rGO texture (NH-CNPS-rGO) to form a unique porous nanoarchitecture. The obtained NH-CNPS-rGO has several advantages benefiting as the cathode electrode, such as (i) the hollow structure as well as porous nanosheets are conducive to fast electrolyte diffusion, (ii) the electrical conductivity of NH-CNPS is further enhanced when coupled with the rGO texture, hence promoting electron transfer in the whole structure, (iii) wrapping NH-CNPSs within the rGO texture endows the nanocomposite with much better structural stability, resulting in longer durability of the electrode, And (iv) the porous structures generated in the nanocomposite provide a perfect space for reducing the mass transfer resistance and accessing the electrolyte, thereby boosting the reaction kinetics. The tests demonstrated that the optimal NH-CNPS-rGO electrode revealed a capacity of up to 1075 C g^-1, a superior rate capacity, and exceptional longevity of 94.7%. Moreover, a hybrid supercapacitor (NH-CNPS-rGO‖AC) equipped with the NH-CNPS-rGO-cathode electrode and activated carbon (AC)-anode electrode represented a satisfactory energy density of 64 W h kg^-1 at 801 W kg^-1 and amazing longevity (91.8% retention after 13 000 cycles), which endorses the promising potential of NH-CNPS-rGO for high-efficiency supercapacitors. This research showcases an appropriate method to engineer hollow TMP-rGO nanocomposites as effective materials for supercapacitors.

High-Performance Bifunctional Ni-Fe-S Catalyst in situ Synthesized within Graphite Intergranular Nanopores for Overall Water Splitting

Low-cost and efficient bifunctional catalysts are urgently needed for overall water splitting used in large-scale energy storage. In this study, we develop a nickel and iron (di)sulfide (Ni-Fe-S) composite catalyst that is in situ synthesized and fixed within the intergranular nanopores inside high pure polycrystalline graphite. Two precursor solutions (reactants) may permeate the graphite intergranular pores to a depth of more than 3.5 mm. The nanoscale pores serve as an array of nanoreactors for the synthesis of the Ni-Fe-S nanoparticles under conditions much milder than usual. The prepared catalyst efficiently catalyzes both the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER) in 1.0 M KOH. It delivers a current density of 400 mA cm^-2 at a full cell voltage of around 2.3 V without considerable activity decay over 24 h electrolysis. The active species of the catalyst are different for the HER and OER and discussed accordingly. The synthesis strategy based on the nanopores in a monolithic conductive substrate proves to be a simple, efficient, and promising way to prepare electrocatalysts that are cheap, abundant, and industrially attractive.

Influence of functionalized core-shell structure on the thermodynamic and shape memory properties of nanocomposites

Filler/matrix interfacial cohesion exerts a straightforward effect on stress transfer at the interface in composite structures, thereby significantly affecting their integrated mechanical properties. Thus, controlling the interface interaction of polymers/fillers is essential for the fabrication of high-performance polymer composites. In this work, a functionalized core-shell structured hybrid was prepared via charge attraction and applied as a novel filler in the trans-1,4-polyisoprene matrix to improve the interfacial interaction of the filler/matrix. A series of tests on the micro- and macroscale was performed to investigate its thermal, mechanical and shape memory performances. The obtained results show that while guaranteeing the shape memory properties of the composites, the utilization of the core-shell structured hybrid not only improved the heat resistant performance, but also contributed to better mechanical properties. This provides solid evidence for the potential of the innovative method presented herein, which may shed some light on the improvement of the interface design strategy and the development of composites with high performances.

Aldehyde-conjugated chitosan-graphene oxide glucodynamers: Ternary cooperative assembly and controlled chemical release

Simultaneous condensation of aromatic aldehydes (Ar_xCHO; x = 1-4) on chitosan biopolymer (CS) affords, after water-evaporation, structurally-conjugated aryl-functionalized CS-Ar_x-f films. Similarly, cooperative assembly of two-dimensional nanometric graphene oxide (GO), aromatic aldehyde and chitosan provides transparent, flexible and crack-free aldehyde-functionalized, ternary-reinforced CS-Ar_x-GO-f nanocomposite films. Homogenous films were obtained using ortho-hydroxybenzaldehyde Ar₁ while the para-hydroxybenzaldehyde Ar₄ was prone to packing inside. Textural and mechanical properties were investigated and expectedly, significant improvement was found for CS-Ar₁-GO-f because of the great dispersion of the aromatic and the presence of the filler. The sensitivity of unsaturated CN imine bond to hydrolysis was explored for triggering controlled release of aromatics from the as-prepared films. All of them were found to induce a time-dependent aromatic release. It has been moreover observed that the release was significantly delayed in CS-Ar_x-GO-f compared to CS-Ar_x-f, a fact attributed to the interplay of the ring with the basal and edges of graphene oxide, through π-π stacking and additional hydrogen bonding interactions. This finding shows that beyond the conventional wisdom using fillers for improving thermal and mechanical properties, the tiny carbon sheets can act as a regulator for aldehyde release, thereby providing a way for more controlled chemical delivery from confined nanocomposites.
