Anisotropic Multitentacle Janus Particles Synthesized by Selective Asymmetric Growth

Anisotropic colloidal particles with asymmetric morphology possess functionally rich heterogeneous structures, thus offering potential for intricate superstructures or nanodevices. However, it is a challenge to achieve controlled asymmetric surface partitioned growth. In this work, an innovative strategy is developed based on the selective adsorption and growth of emulsion droplets onto different regions of object which is controlled by wettability. It is found that the emulsion droplets can selectively adsorb on the hydrophilic surface but not the hydrophobic one, and further form asymmetric tentacle by the interfacial sol-gel process along its trajectory. Janus particles with an anisotropic shape and multitentacle structure are achieved via integration of emulsion droplet (soft) and seed (hard) templates. The size and number of tentacles exhibit tunability mediated by soft and hard templates, respectively. This general strategy can be expanded to a variety of planar substrates or curved particles, further confirming the correlation between tentacle growth and Brownian motion. Most interestingly, it can be employed to selectively modify one region of surface partitioned particles to achieve an ABC three-component Janus structure.

C,N co-doped TiO2 hollow nanofibers coated stainless steel meshes for oil/water separation and visible light-driven degradation of pollutants

Complex pollutants are discharging and accumulating in rivers and oceans, requiring a coupled strategy to resolve pollutants efficiently. A novel method is proposed to treat multiple pollutants with C,N co-doped TiO₂ hollow nanofibers coated stainless steel meshes which can realize efficient oil/water separation and visible light-drove dyes photodegradation. The poly(divinylbenzene-co-vinylbenzene chloride), P(DVB-co-VBC), nanofibers are generated by precipitate cationic polymerization on the mesh framework, following with quaternization by triethylamine for N doping. Then, TiO₂ is coated on the polymeric nanofibers via in-situ sol-gel process of tetrabutyl titanate. The functional mesh coated with C,N co-doped TiO₂ hollow nanofibers is obtained after calcination under nitrogen atmosphere. The resultant mesh demonstrates superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic property which is promising in oil/water separation. More importantly, the C,N co-doped TiO₂ hollow nanofibers endow the mesh with high photodegradation ability to dyes under visible light. This work draws an affordable but high-performance multifunctional mesh for potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Water Spider-Inspired Nanofiber Coating with Sustainable Scale Repellency via Air-Replenishing Strategy

To survive underwater even in severely hypoxic water for a long period, the water spider has to periodically collect and replenish air into the diving bell. Inspired by this natural air-replenishing strategy, a water spider-inspired nanofiber (WSN) coating with underwater superaerophilicity displaying excellent and sustainable scalephobic capability is prepared. Air film on the WSN coating can be well-kept and further employed as the barrier layer for scale repellence. Significantly, scalephobic capability of the WSN coating mainly originates from two aspects: inhibiting interfacial nucleation and reducing interfacial adhesion of scale. Compared with previous studies, this WSN coating achieves excellent and sustainable scale repellence (≈ 98% reduction in scale deposition) even after a one-month dynamic scaling test. Thus, this air-replenishing strategy may raise a new avenue for advanced long-term scalephobic materials.

Template assisted preparation of silicone (polydimethylsiloxane) elastomers and their self-cleaning application

The formation of self-cleaning functions on silicone elastomers is crucial for practical applications but still challenging. In this study, superhydrophobic silicone elastomers (SHSEs) with a 3D-hierarchical microstructure were achieved during the curing process with the assistance of a homemade template. The micro-nano structure formed by the assistance of the template makes the silicone elastomer surface achieve robust superhydrophobicity with a WCA at ∼163°, which can easily self-clean, removing surface contamination. Also, TiO2 particles transferred from the template endow the surface with photocatalytic functions, which can degrade organic pollutants under UV irradiation. After sandpaper abrasion, the formed SHSE can maintain its excellent hydrophobicity and show liquid repellency to wine and coffee droplets. The SHSEs with self-cleaning functions have promising applications in water treatment, medical facilities, and wearable devices.

Review on the recent development of durable superhydrophobic materials for practical applications

Biomimetic superhydrophobic surfaces show great potential in oil-water separation, anti-icing and self-cleaning. However, due to the instability caused by its fragile structure and non-durable superhydrophobicity, it is difficult to apply them in the actual field. Here, by introducing surface wettability and analysing the mechanism of superhydrophobic failure, it is concluded that the reason for the failure of the superhydrophobic surface comes from the transition of the surface energy and the hysteresis of the contact angle (CA). On the basis of this analysis, it is concluded that the principle of designing a durable superhydrophobic surface is to satisfy one of the following three points: improving the binding force between molecules, introducing durable materials and improving chemical durability. On this basis, a variety of preparation methods are proposed, such as assembly method and spray/dip coating method, and the design and preparation of a self-healing surface inspired by nature will also be included in the introduction. Last but not least, the preparation and application of a durable super-hydrophobic surface in oil-water separation, anti-icing and self-cleaning are also introduced in detail. This review reveals the conclusions and prospects of durable superhydrophobic surfaces, and aims to inspire more researchers to invest in this research.

The effects of bio-inspired micro/nano scale structures on anti-icing properties

Ice formation and accumulation have detrimental effects on commercial surfaces and people's lives. The ice adhesion strength decreases with increasing surface hydrophobicity, and the superhydrophobicity of a surface can be constructed by a combination of low surface free energy and high surface roughness. Conversely, the characteristics of biological surfaces have aroused wide attention as a result of the superhydrophobicity of plants and animals, deriving from the synergistic effects of chemical compositions and multi-scale hierarchical structures. Therefore, inspired by bio-mimetic studies on biological surfaces, a lot of artificial bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces have been broadly designed and constructed. Herein, we aim to summarize the fundamental theories of surface wettability and recent progress in the fabrication of bio-inspired surfaces. The bio-inspired surfaces prepared by different facile methods not only have superhydrophobicity, but also have anti-icing/icephobic properties. In the end, some challenges and problems in the future study and advancement of bio-inspired superhydrophobic surfaces are proposed.

Bioinspired surfaces with wettability: biomolecule adhesion behaviors

Surface wettability plays an important role in regulating biomolecule adhesion behaviors. The biomolecule adhesion behaviors of superwettable surfaces have become an important topic as an important part of the interactions between materials and organisms. In addition to general research on the moderate wettability of surfaces, the studies of biomolecule adhesion behaviors extend to extreme wettability ranges such as superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic and slippery surfaces and attract both fundamental and practical interest. In this review, we summarize the recent studies on biomolecule adhesion behaviors on superwettable surfaces, especially superhydrophobic, superhydrophilic and slippery surfaces. The first part will focus on the influence of extreme wettability on cell adhesion behaviors. The second part will concentrate on the adhesion behaviors of biomacromolecules on superwettable surfaces including proteins and nucleic acids. Finally, the influences of wettability on small molecule adhesion behaviors on material surfaces have also been investigated. The mechanism of superwettable surfaces and their influences on biomolecule adhesion behaviors have been studied and highlighted.
