Abstract
Ratiometric fluorescence sensing methods are widely used in analysis and detection due to their high sensitivity and stability. In this work, a ratiometric fluorescence method for sensitive detection of Hg2+ was established using a gold nanoclusters/carbon quantum dots (AuNCs/CQDs) nanohybrid probe. The AuNCs/CQDs nanohybrids probe were simply constructed by mixing blue-light-emitting gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with an orange-emissive carbon quantum dots (CQDs). The probe had two fluorescence emission peaks at 434 nm and 561 nm when the excitation wavelength was 375 nm. With the addition of Hg2+, the fluorescence at 434 nm decreased and the fluorescence at 561 nm remained unchanged; the fluorescence intensity ratio Δ(F434/F561) and Hg2+ concentration have a good linear relationship in the range of 8.32 × 10-7 to 7.69 × 10-5 mol L-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 3.58 × 10-7 mol L-1. The method was applied in the detection of Hg2+ in cosmetics and wastewater, and has potential applications for detecting Hg2+ in other samples.

Abstract
Biocompatible fluorescent probes have emerged as essential tools in life sciences for visualizing subcellular structures and detecting specific analytes. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel fluorescent probe (TPE-FdU), incorporated with hydrophilic 2'-fluoro-substituted deoxyuridine and hydrophobic ethynyl tetraphenylethene moieties, which possessed typical aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior. In comparison to the TPE-FdU (pKa 7.68) treated in neutral conditions, it performed well at pH 4, exhibiting an enhanced 450 nm emission signal of approximately four times stronger. As the pH value was increased to 10, the fluorescence intensity was completely quenched. The TEM images of TPE-FdU in an acidic environment (nanospherical morphology, AIE enhance, pH = 4) and in a basic environment (microrods, fluorescence quenching, pH = 9) revealed that it was a pH-dependent self-assembled probe, which was also illustrated by the interpretation of the NMR spectrum. Furthermore, the TPE-FdU probe exhibited a specific response to trace Hg2+ ions. Interestingly, the quenched fluorescence of the TPE-FdU probe caused by Hg2+ can be recovered by the addition of GSH due to the formation of the Hg-S bond being released away. MTT assay and CLSM images demonstrated that TPE-FdU was nontoxic and selectively visualized in the intracellular mitochondria. These results contributed to the development of advanced fluorescent probes with diverse applications in cell imaging, environment protection, and biomedical research.

Abstract
A calix[4]arene-based gelator 1, with lower-rim mono triazolylpyridine group, capable of spontaneous self-assembly into microspheres in different ethanol/H2 O mixtures, is synthesized. The concentration-dependent 1 H NMR spectra and X-ray single-crystal structure of 1 provided evidence for self-assembly of gelator 1 via cooperative interactions of intermolecular noncovalent forces. Furthermore, metallogels by self-assembly of 1 was found to exhibit remarkable selectivity toward Hg2+ ions. 1 H NMR spectra support that Hg2+ ion was bound to the nitrogen atoms of two coordination sites of 1, which composed of triazole and pyridine. Moreover, the results of field emission scanning electron microscopy and rheology experiments indicated that Hg2+ ions not only enhanced the gelling ability of gelator 1 in ethanol but also led to morphological change of its self-assembly through metal-ligand interactions. Finally, the in situ gelation, triggered by mixing a gelator solution of 1 in ethanol with water samples such as deionized (DI), tap, and lake water, leads to the effective removal of Hg(II) from a water sample which reduced from 400 to 1.6 ppm.

Abstract
A newly synthesized AIEgen based on triphenylamine is fully characterized and coded as BRA for the simultaneous and discriminatory selective detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ ions directly in mixed aqueous media for the identification and purification of water with a low detection limit. Moreover, we employed BRA in histotoxicity in that when compared to the control group, fish exposed to the "novel synthesized luminogen (BRA)" that demonstrated photophysical phenomena during the "sensing of mercury and silver (heavy metals) in aqueous media" did not show any major distinguishing changes in the architecture of their gills, liver, muscle, brain, kidney, and heart tissues.

Abstract
The shortage of freshwater resources caused by heavy metal pollution is an acute global issue, which has a great impact on environmental protection and human health. Therefore, the exploitation of new strategies for designing and synthesizing green, efficient, and economical materials for the detection and removal of heavy metal ions is crucial. Among the various methods for the detection and removal of heavy ions, advanced functional systems including nanomaterials, polymers, porous materials, and biomaterials have attracted considerable attention over the past several years due to their capabilities of real-time detection, excellent removal efficiency, anti-interference, quick response, high selectivity, and low limit of detection. In this tutorial review, we review the general design principles underlying the aforementioned functional materials, and in particular highlight the fundamental mechanisms and specific examples of detecting and removing heavy metal ions. Additionally, the methods which enhance water purification quality using these functional materials have been reviewed, also current challenges and opportunities in this exciting field have been highlighted, including the fabrication, subsequent treatment, and potential future applications of such functional materials. We envision that this tutorial review will provide invaluable guidance for the design of functional materials tailored towards the detection and removal of heavy metals, thereby expediting the development of high-performance materials and fostering the development of more efficient approaches to water pollution remediation.

Abstract
Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a well-known toxic heavy metal. It has become one of the most significant environmental pollutants in the world because of its serious physiological toxicity, persistence, easy migration, and high bioconcentration. Thus, the development of methods for monitoring Hg2+ is indispensable. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a new fluorescent probe, TPH, for the detection of Hg2+ in the water environment. The TPH probe could quantitatively detect Hg2+ between 0 and 5 μM (LOD = 16 nM), with a linear range of 0-2.5 μM. In addition, the TPH probe was used to monitor Hg2+ in water samples successfully. Thus, this probe is suitable for monitoring Hg2+ in the actual water environment.

Abstract
Noninvasively imaging mercury poisoning in living organisms is critical to understanding its toxicity and treatments. Especially, simultaneous fluorescence imaging of Hg2+ and MeHg+in vivo is helpful to disclose the mysteries of mercury poisoning. The key limitation for mercury imaging in vivo is the low imaging signal-to-background ratio (SBR) and limited imaging depth, which may result in unreliable detection results. Here, we designed and prepared a near-infrared II (NIR II) emissive probe, NIR-Rh-MS, leveraging the "spirolactam ring-open" tactic of xanthene dyes for in situ visualization of mercury toxicity in mice. The probe produces a marked fluorescence signal at 1015 nm and displays good linear responses to Hg2+ and MeHg+ with excellent sensitivity, respectively. The penetration experiments elucidate that the activated NIR-II fluorescence signal of the probe penetrates to a depth of up to 7 mm in simulated tissues. Impressively, the probe can monitor the toxicity of Hg2+ in mouse livers and the accumulation of MeHg+ in mouse brains via intravital NIR-II imaging for the first time. Thus, we believe that detecting Hg2+ and MeHg+ in different organs with a single NIR-II fluorescence probe in mice would assuredly advance the toxicologic study of mercury poisoning in vivo.

Abstract
Stimuli-induced structural transformation of supramolecular cages has drawn increasing attention because of their sensitive feature to external variations as model systems to simulate biological processes. However, combining structural transformation and useful functions has remained a difficult task. This study reports the solvato-controlled self-assembly of two unique topologies with different emission characteristics, a water-soluble Ag8 L4 cage (A) and an Ag4 L2 cage (B), produced from the same sulfonate-pendant tetraphenylethene (TPE) bridged tetrakis-(1,2,4-triazolium) ligand. Both cages show interesting solvent-responsive reversible structural transformation, and the change of fluorescence signals can efficiently track the process. Additionally, water-soluble cage A exhibits unique properties in thermochromism, thiol amino acid sensing, and subcellular imaging in aqueous media.

Abstract
Mercury ion, as a metal cation with great toxic effect, is widely present in various production and living environments. It seriously threatens human health and environmental safety. It is of great significance to develop convenient and effective methods for mercury ion detection. Here, we designed and synthesized a new ratiometric fluorescent probe (namely APS-NA) for the detection of mercury ions in the environment and multiple biological samples. The probe is constructed by covalently connecting two fluorophores with lipolic acid to achieve fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In the molecular structure of APS-NA, acridone is used as an energy donor, 1,8-naphthalimide is used as an energy acceptor, and a dithioacetal group is used as the reaction site for Hg2+. The intact APS-NA mainly shows the green fluorescence from the acceptor moiety 1,8-naphthalimide; the presence of Hg2+ ions would break the dithioacetal linkage between acridone and 1,8-naphthalimide; the defunctionalization of FRET would lead to bright blue fluorescence emission of acridone; thus ratiometric fluorescent detection of Hg2+ can be achieved by this recognition process. The probe not only has a large Stokes shift (Δλ = 110 nm), but also has high selectivity, high sensitivity (low detection limit 30 nM) and naked eye visualization. In addition, we have successfully used this probe for the detection Hg2+ of actual samples and imaging of a variety of organisms. These results indicate that the probe has broad application prospects.

Abstract
It is critical to design a novel and simple bifunctional sensor for the selective and sensitive detection of ions in an aqueous media in environmental samples. As a result, in this study, tetraphenylethene hydrazinecarbothioamide (TPE-PVA), known as probe 1, was successfully synthesized and characterized as having impressive photophysical phenomena such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanochromic properties by applying mechanical force to the solid of probe 1. The emission of the solid of probe 1 changed from turquoise blue to lemon yellow after grinding, from lemon yellow to parakeet green after annealing at 160 °C, and to arctic blue after fuming with DCM. Such characteristics could lead to a variety of applications in several fields. The probe was implemented and demonstrated remarkable selectivity and sensitivity toward mercury(II) and silver(I) ions by substantially switching off emission over other cations. Following an extensive photophysical analysis, it was discovered that detection limits (LOD) as low as 0.18344 and 0.2384 μg mL-1 for Hg2+ and Ag+, respectively, are possible with a quantum yield (Φ) of 2.26. Probe 1 was also explored as a Hg2+ and Ag+ paper strip-based sensor and kit for practical use. The binding mechanisms of probe 1 (TPE-PVA) with Hg2+ and Ag+ were confirmed by 1H NMR titration. These results could lead to the development of reliable onsite Hg2+ and Ag+ fluorescent probes in the future.

Abstract
Ultrasensitive detection of Hg2+ in aquatic ecosystems is of great significance due to its high toxicity and ubiquity in water. Herein, using a one-step in-situ synthesis method, blue fluorescent carbon dots (CDs), red fluorescent InP/ZnS quantum dots (InPQDs), and MOFs (ZIF-8) integrated multicolor nano-sensor CDs/InPQDs@ZIF-8 was constructed for consecutive visual detection of Hg2+ and Cys. The InPQDs can act as the response unit for Hg2+ and Cys, with the limit of detection (LOD) of 8.68 and 37.96 nM, respectively. Significantly, the low detection limit combines with good specificity and accuracy of the nano-sensor meet the requirement for the safety monitoring and control of Hg2+ in drinking and environmental water. Moreover, the color recognition and processing software installed on smart phone can realize the real-time and rapid sensing of Hg2+ and Cys. A logic gate circuit was also devised, providing the possibilities for the application of the nano-sensor in the field of intelligent devices. As far as we know, this was the first example to apply InPQDs to the continuous multicolor visual detection of Hg2+ and Cys, which provided reference for the construction of environmentally-friendly dual emission fluorescent sensors for hazardous substance monitoring.

Effects of Mercury Contamination on Microbial Diversity of Different Kinds of Soil. Microorganisms 2022; 10:microorganisms10050977. Abstract
Soil microorganisms promote the recovery of contaminated soil by influencing the cyclic transformation of various substances. In this study, we investigated the impact of mercury pollution on the structure, composition, and main populations of soil microbial communities using a high-throughput sequencing method and observed that mercury pollution significantly influenced the diversity, structure, and distribution pattern of microbial communities. Furthermore, during mercury pollution, the Shannon and Chao indices decreased for the bacterial communities and increased for the fungal communities. Mercury pollution mainly reduced the relative abundances of Proteobacteria (16.2−30.6%), Actinomycetes (24.7−40.8%), and other dominant bacterial phyla. The relative abundance of Ascomycota decreased by 17.4% and 16.7% in alkaline and neutral soils, respectively, whereas the relative abundance of unclassified_k_Fungi increased by 26.1% and 28.6%, respectively. In acidic soil, Ascomycota increased by 106.3% and unclassified_k_Fungi decreased by 71.2%. The results of redundancy and correlation analyses suggested that soil microbial diversity was significantly correlated with soil properties such as pH, cation exchange capacity, soil organic carbon, and total nitrogen (p < 0.05) under different treatments. Our findings highlight the impact of Hg pollution on soil microbial communities, thereby providing a theoretical foundation for the bioremediation of soil Hg pollution.

Abstract
Ratio fluorescence has attracted much attention because of its self-calibration properties. However, it is difficult to obtain suitable fluorescent materials with well-resolved signals simultaneously under one excitation. In this work, we report a different strategy, using MIL-68(In)-NH2 as both the fluorescence element and the scattered light unit, and coupling the fluorescence and the scattered light to construct the fluorescence and scattered light ratio system. Based on the optical properties and the second-order scattering (SOS) of the material nanoparticles, the synthesized MIL-68(In)-NH2 can be used to realize the ratio detection of Hg2+. Because the scattering intensity of small particle MIL-68(In)-NH2 is weak, SOS is not obvious. When Hg2+ is introduced the coordination reaction between the amino nitrogen atoms of MIL-68(In)-NH2 and Hg2+ make the particles larger, resulting in the decrease of fluorescence and the enhancement of SOS. As a result, a novel Hg2+ ratiometric detection method is developed by using the dual signal responses of the fluorescence and scattering. Under the optimal conditions (pH = 6, reaction time 5 min, room temperature, and the maximum excitation wavelength 365 nm), the linear range of the method is 0-100 μM, and the detection limit is 5.8 nM (Ksv = 9.89 × 109 M-1). In addition, the probe is successfully used to evaluate Hg2+ in actual water samples. Compared with the traditional method of recording only the fluorescence signal, the proposed fluorescence-scattering method provides a new strategy for the design of ratiometric sensors.

Abstract
In this study we report efficient method for the syntheses of mono- and diarylated diphenyldithienylethene (DPDTE) via a palladium-catalyzed C–H arylation reaction. These new derivatives showed amplified luminescent properties thanks to a change in polarity, particularly in the presence of an electron-withdrawing groups (EWG). Moreover, the arylated DPDTEs showed dual-emissive phenomena, including fluorescence in organic solvents and aggregation-induced emission.

Abstract
A new near-infrared (NIR)-emitting aza-boron-dipyrromethene dye with two electron-donating amino groups at 1- and 7-positions has been prepared via several steps of reactions. This probe showed a NIR absorption at 748 nm with an obvious shoulder peak at 634 nm in CH3CN/H2O. Interestingly, a NIR fluorescence emission at 843 nm was observed with a large Stokes shift of 95 nm. This novel NIR-emitting aza-boron-dipyrromethene dye was further investigated as a Hg2+-sensing fluorescent probe, which selectively bound to Hg2+, showing a blue-shifted and sharp absorption band at 695 nm with the disappearance of the shoulder peak at 634 nm. Correspondingly, the color change could be easily seen from blue to green. Interestingly, the emission exhibited an absolutely "turn-on" peak at 725 nm with a significant blue shift by 118 nm (from 843 to 725 nm), due to the efficient inhibition of the intramolecular-charge-transfer process arising from two amino groups. This probe was finally introduced to Hela cells, showing a "OFF-ON" NIR emission upon exposure to Hg2+. The overall results confirmed that this novel NIR-emitting aza-boron-dipyrromethene fluorescent probe with a large Stokes shift could serve as a colorimetric and fluorescent "turn-on" sensor for Hg2+ in both solutions and living cells.

Abstract
Ions, including anions and heavy metals, are extremely toxic and easily accumulate in the human body, threatening the health of humans and even causing human death at low concentrations. It is therefore necessary to detect these toxic ions in low concentrations in water. Fluorescent sensing is a good method for detecting these ions, but some conventional dyes often exhibit an aggregation caused quench (ACQ) effect in their solid state, limiting their large-scale application. Fluorescent probes based on aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have received significant attention due to their high fluorescence quantum yields in their nano aggragated states, easy fabrication, use of moderate conditions, and selevtive recognization of organic/inorganic compounds in water with obvious changes in fluorescence. We surmarize the recent advances of AIE-based sensors for low concentration toxic ion detection in water. The detection probes can be divided into three categories: chemical reaction types, chemical interaction types and physical interaction types. Chemical reaction types utilize nucleophilic addition and coordination reaction, while chemical interaction types rely on hydrogen bonding and anion-π interactions. The physical interaction types are composed of electrostatic attractions. We finally comment on the challenges and outlook of AIE-active sensors.

Abstract
Today atherosclerosis is considered as a main cause of death in the worldwide. There is a significant association between heavy metal exposure and atherosclerosis. In this study, we discussed the scientific literature about the effect of mercury on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We also considered the epidemiological studies on mercury as a risk factor for atherosclerosis. Web of Science, Google Scholar, Medline, PubMed, and Scopus were searched by using the following keywords to 2019: (cardiovascular diseases OR atherosclerosis OR endothelial dysfunction) AND (mercury). Mercury has the potential to act as one of the novel risk factors for atherosclerosis development. The findings have indicated the role of mercury in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, vascular endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammation, and dyslipidemia. Mercury can induce atherosclerosis indirectly via increasing the total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-C levels as well as decreasing the HDL-C level. Mercury can be considered as a risk factor in the atherosclerosis progression. However, more studies are required to find the exact mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis induced by mercury.

Abstract
As a global public health problem, food safety has attracted increasing concern. To minimize the risk exposure of food to harmful ingredients, food quality and safety inspection that covers the whole process of "from farm to fork" is much desired. Fluorescent sensing is a promising and powerful screening tool for sensing hazardous substances in food and thus plays a crucial role in promoting food safety assurance. However, traditional fluorphores generally suffer the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect, which limit their application in food quality and safety inspection. In this regard, luminogens with aggregation-induced emission property (AIEgens) showed large potential in food analysis since AIEgens effectively surmount the ACQ effect with much better detection sensitivity, accuracy, and robustness. In this contribution, we review the latest developments of food safety monitoring by AIEgens, which will focus on the molecular design of AIEgens and their sensing principles. Several examples of AIE-based sensing applications for screening food contaminations are highlighted, and future perspectives and challenges in this emerging field are tentatively elaborated. We hope this review can motivate new research ideas and interest to aid food safety and quality control, and facilitate more collaborative endeavors to advance the state-of-the-art sensing developments and reduce actual translational gap between laboratory research and industrial production.

Abstract
It is highly challenging to develop fast and sensitive fluorescent methods for monitoring organic mercury in purely aqueous solutions as well as live cells. Especially, selective fluorescent detection of methylmercury over inorganic mercury ions has not been reported. We developed a fast and sensitive fluorescent detection method for Hg2+ ions as well as methylmercury using an amino acid-based fluorescent probe (1) and SDS micelles. The fluorescent probe in SDS micelles detected sensitively and selectively Hg2+ ions and methylmercury among 16 metal ions in purely aqueous solution by the enhancement of the red emission at 575 nm, and the detection of methylmercury was completed within 1 min. The probe in SDS micelles with EDTA showed highly sensitive and selective turn on detection for methylmercury over Hg2+. The limit of detection was 9.1 nM for Hg2+ (1.8 ppb, R2 = 0.989) and 206 nM for CH3Hg+ (R2 = 0.997). 1 rapidly penetrated live cells and detected intracellular Hg2+ ions as well as CH3Hg+ by the enhancement of both red emissions and green emissions. Subsequent treatment of EDTA into the cell confirmed the selective detection of methylmercury in the cells. The present work indicated that the fluorescent probe with micelle systems provided a fast, sensitive, and selective detection method for monitoring inorganic mercury as well as methyl mercury.

Abstract
Metal ions play important roles in biological system. Approaches capable of selective and sensitive detection of metal ions in living biosystems provide in situ information and have attracted remarkable research attentions. Among these, fluorescence probes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behavior offer unique properties. A variety of AIE fluorogens (AIEgens) have been developed in the past decades for tracing metal ions. This review highlights recent advances (since 2015) in AIE-based sensors for detecting metal ions in biological systems. Major concerns will be devoted to the design principles, sensing performance, and bioimaging applications.

Abstract
AIE-active positional isomers, TTE-o-PhCHO, TTE-m-PhCHO and TTE-p-PhCHO, tetrathienylethene (TTE) derivates with peripherally attached ortho-/meta-/para-formyl phenyl groups, were designed and synthesized. The formyl substitution position can effectively modulate their photophysical properties, mechanochromism and fluorescent response to hydrazine. TTE-o-PhCHO and TTE-m-PhCHO exhibit remarkable AIE characteristics, and TTE-p-PhCHO possesses aggregation-induced emission enhancement performance. They all exhibit high contrast mechanochromism, and TTE-m-PhCHO shows larger red-shift (164 nm) than TTE-o-PhCHO (104 nm) and TTE-p-PhCHO (125 nm) due to the more twisted molecular conformation and much looser molecular packing. Moreover, TTE-o-PhCHO with a higher contrast color change can be used as ink-free rewritable paper. In addition, TTE-p-PhCHO, as a turn-on fluorescent probe, can selectively detect hydrazine with significant color changes that are visible by the naked eye . Therefore, the position dependence of groups would be an effective method to modulate the molecular arrangement, as well as develop AIE compounds for mechano-stimuli responsive materials, ink-free rewritable papers and chemosensors.

Abstract
In this work, we presented a new tetraphenylethene-derived fluorescent probe TPE-M for Hg2+ detection in an aqueous solution. Probe TPE-M is molecularly dissolved in CH3OH/PBS (20 mM, pH = 7.4) (3 : 7, v/v) mixed solution and is almost non-emissive. Reaction of TPE-M with Hg2+ leads to release of an AIE-active precursor 4, and results in a significant fluorescence enhancement. The Hg2+ recognition process has some distinct advantages including rapid response, high selectivity and sensitivity, strong anti-interference ability, and a low detection limit (4.16 × 10−6 M). Moreover, the probe is applicable to detect Hg2+ in real food samples such as shrimp, crab and teas, suggesting the practical applicability of TPE-M. A new AIE-based fluorescent probe TPE-M for Hg2+ detection in an aqueous solution has been developed.![]()
