Making strong polyelectrolyte brushes pH-sensitive by incorporation of gold nanoparticles

Polyelectrolyte Complexation When Considering the Counterion-Mediated Hydrogen Bonding

In this work, we have investigated a pH-modulated complexation between two oppositely charged strong polyelectrolytes to demonstrate the effect of counterion-mediated hydrogen bonding (CMHB) on polyelectrolyte complexation. We have found that such a pH-modulated complexation cannot be understood without considering the CMHB. Thermodynamically, the effect of CMHB on the polyelectrolyte complexation is manifested by the alteration of both enthalpic and entropic contributions to the free energy change. The pH-dependent intrinsic ion-pairing and complex coacervation processes of the polyelectrolyte complexation can be understood when considering the CMHB. Our study demonstrates that both the extent of polyelectrolyte complex formation in bulk solutions and the formation of polyelectrolyte multilayers on surfaces are controlled by the pH-dependent intrinsic ion-pairing process. Furthermore, on the basis of the pH-dependent intrinsic ion pairing, the properties of the multilayers can be tuned by pH. This work provides a new strategy to control the polyelectrolyte complexation with counterions and will inspire new ideas for building advanced polyelectrolyte materials.

Effects of Amino Acid Side-Chain Length and Chemical Structure on Anionic Polyglutamic and Polyaspartic Acid Cellulose-Based Polyelectrolyte Brushes

We used atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study polyelectrolyte brushes based on anionic α,L-glutamic acid and α,L-aspartic acid grafted on cellulose in the presence of divalent CaCl₂ salt at different concentrations. The motivation is to search for ways to control properties such as sorption capacity and the structural response of the brush to multivalent salts. For this detailed understanding of the role of side-chain length, the chemical structure and their interplay are required. It was found that in the case of glutamic acid oligomers, the longer side chains facilitate attractive interactions with the cellulose surface, which forces the grafted chains to lie down on the surface. The additional methylene group in the side chain enables side-chain rotation, enhancing this effect. On the other hand, the shorter and more restricted side chains of aspartic acid oligomers prevent attractive interactions to a large degree and push the grafted chains away from the surface. The difference in side-chain length also leads to differences in other properties of the brush in divalent salt solutions. At a low grafting density, the longer side chains of glutamic acid allow the adsorbed cations to be spatially distributed inside the brush resulting in a charge inversion. With an increase in grafting density, the difference in the total charge of the aspartic and glutamine brushes disappears, but new structural features appear. The longer sides allow for ion bridging between the grafted chains and the cellulose surface without a significant change in main-chain conformation. This leads to the brush structure being less sensitive to changes in salt concentration.

pH-responsive SERS substrates based on AgNP-polyMETAC composites on patterned self-assembled monolayers

Patterned silver nanoparticle (NP)-poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (AgNP-polyMETAC) composites were prepared by electrochemical lithography, surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and NP growth inside the polymer brushes. For this purpose, polymer brushes of poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] trimethyl ammonium chloride (polyMETAC) were utilized as strong electrolyte brush system. These were introduced in form of patterned polymer brushes to create pH-responsive surface enhanced Raman scattering SERS substrates. It is well-known that the charges of strong polyelectrolyte chains are usually insensitive to pH changes, hence, rarely strong polyelectrolyte brushes have been utilized so far to study pH-responsive properties of such films. Here pH-insensitive polyMETAC brushes exhibit pH-sensitive properties and can be used as pH-responsive surfaces for SERS applications due to the embedding of AgNPs into the polymer brushes. When increasing the pH, the assembly of the AgNPs transfers from quasi two-dimensional (2D) aggregates, attaching mainly to the polymer surface, into a three-dimensional (3D) assembly, where the particles are penetrating into the brushes. These changes result in significant alterations of the SERS efficiency of the polymer brush composite. At pH 5, the enhancement of the Raman scattering approaches its maximum. The fabricated SERS substrates show a high sensitivity as well as good experimental reliability at different pH values. Moreover, electrochemical lithography was utilized to fabricate patterned SERS substrate, which allows an easy combination of multiple other functionalities in hierarchical structuring steps. In addition, the microstructure is in our studies beneficial because of a simplified and reliable characterization of the polymer brushes at defined sample areas. The introduction of the microstructured brush system is regarded moreover attractive for the development of high-throughput platforms for rapid, automated screening and analysis applications.

Hierarchy of Hybrid Materials-The Place of Inorganics-in-Organics in it, Their Composition and Applications

Hybrid materials, or hybrids incorporating both organic and inorganic constituents, are emerging as a very potent and promising class of materials due to the diverse, but complementary nature of the properties inherent of these different classes of materials. The complementarity leads to a perfect synergy of properties of desired material and eventually an end-product. The diversity of resultant properties and materials used in the construction of hybrids, leads to a very broad range of application areas generated by engaging very different research communities. We provide here a general classification of hybrid materials, wherein organics-in-inorganics (inorganic materials modified by organic moieties) are distinguished from inorganics-in-organics (organic materials or matrices modified by inorganic constituents). In the former area, the surface functionalization of colloids is distinguished as a stand-alone sub-area. The latter area-functionalization of organic materials by inorganic additives-is the focus of the current review. Inorganic constituents, often in the form of small particles or structures, are made of minerals, clays, semiconductors, metals, carbons, and ceramics. They are shown to be incorporated into organic matrices, which can be distinguished as two classes: chemical and biological. Chemical organic matrices include coatings, vehicles and capsules assembled into: hydrogels, layer-by-layer assembly, polymer brushes, block co-polymers and other assemblies. Biological organic matrices encompass bio-molecules (lipids, polysaccharides, proteins and enzymes, and nucleic acids) as well as higher level organisms: cells, bacteria, and microorganisms. In addition to providing details of the above classification and analysis of the composition of hybrids, we also highlight some antagonistic yin-&-yang properties of organic and inorganic materials, review applications and provide an outlook to emerging trends.
