Impact of Ligand Substitution and Metal Node Exchange in the Electronic Properties of Scandium Terephthalate Frameworks

The search for sustainable alternatives to established materials is a sensitive topic in materials science. Due to their unique structural and physical characteristics, the composition of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can be tuned by the exchange of metal nodes and the functionalization of organic ligands, giving rise to a large configurational space. Considering the case of scandium terephthalate MOFs and adopting an automatized computational framework based on density-functional theory, we explore the impact of metal substitution with the earth-abundant isoelectronic elements Al and Y, and ligand functionalization of varying electronegativity. We find that structural properties are strongly impacted by metal ion substitution and only moderately by ligand functionalization. In contrast, the energetic stability, the charge density distribution, and the electronic properties, including the size of the band gap, are primarily affected by the termination of the linker molecules. Functional groups such as OH and NH2 lead to particularly stable structures thanks to the formation of hydrogen bonds and affect the electronic structure of the MOFs by introducing midgap states.

Based on FRET to construct color-tunable ultralong lifetime room temperature phosphorescent carbon dots in aqueous solution

Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) Carbon Dots have been capturing increasing attention in recent years, while building a general method to adjust the emission color of RTP carbon dots is still a big challenge. Herein we report a simple method that combine the carbon nanodots and dyes (R6G and DCF) in SiO2 nanosphere to get a series of multicolor RTP nanodots (CD@SiO2@dye) with long lifetime in aqueous solution. Leverage on chitosan quaternary ammonium as matrix and diethylenetriamine as N-doping resource to form a cross-linked skeleton as a luminescent center (namely CD), and a rigid network is formed by silica encapsulation (CD@SiO2) to restrict the non-radiative transition process to generate the phosphorescence. The CD-based composites, with 1.10 s green (503 nm) phosphorescence emission, serve as activator to stimulate the corresponding luminescence of organic dyes. Then, based on Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process from CDs (as donor) to organic dyes (as acceptor) under UV excitation, the CD@SiO2@R6G emit ultra-long lifetime (1.13 s) orange-yellow (570 nm) afterglow, and CD@SiO2@DCF emit ultra-long lifetime (1.20 s) yellow-green afterglow (530 nm). Furthermore, it also achieves RTP colors control when the ratio of CDs and the dyes changes, the ratio of green emission and dye's emission activated by CDs will gradually change as well. These kinds of materials keep the inherent advantages of low toxicity and luminous stability, and achieve adjustable RTP color in aqueous solution. Our research provides a strategy to synthesize water-soluble long-life RTP CDs with adjustable color and lifetime.

Direct White-Light Emitting From a Single Metal-Organic Framework with Dual Phosphorescence Peaks

Single component white-light-emitting (SCWLE) materials are extremely desired in the field of solid-state lighting. However, pure-phosphorescent SCWLE has rarely been reported. Herein, one halogen-bonding-containing MOF [Cd(5-BIPA)(phen)] (1) has been synthesized, which shows efficient white-light emission originating from dual phosphorescence bands with different wavelengths and lifetimes. The fabrication of a phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diode device driven by pulsing current enables this MOF to be a promising phosphor.

Recent advances in the design of afterglow materials: mechanisms, structural regulation strategies and applications

Afterglow materials are attracting widespread attention owing to their distinctive and long-lived optical emission properties which create exciting opportunities in various fields. Recent research has led to the discovery of many new afterglow materials featuring high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and lifetimes of up to several hours under ambient conditions. Afterglow materials are typically categorized according to their luminescence mechanism, such as long-persistent luminescence (LPL), room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), or thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). Through rational design and novel synthetic strategies to modulate spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and populate triplet exciton states (T1), luminophores with long lifetimes and bright afterglow characteristics can be realized. Initial research towards afterglow materials focused mainly on pure inorganic materials, many of which possessed inherent disadvantages such as metal toxicity or low energy emissions. In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials (OIHAMs) have been developed with high PLQY and long lifetimes. These hybrid materials exploit the tunable structure and easy processing of organic molecules, as well as enhanced SOC and intersystem crossing (ISC) processes involving heavy atom dopants, to achieve excellent afterglow performance. In this review, we begin by briefly discussing the structure and composition of inorganic and organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including strategies for regulating their lifetime, PLQY and luminescence wavelength. The specific advantages of organic-inorganic hybrid afterglow materials, including low manufacturing costs, diverse molecular/electronic structures, tunable structures and optical properties, and compatibility with a variety of substrates, are emphasized. Subsequently, we discuss in detail the fundamental mechanisms used by afterglow materials, their classification, design principles, and end applications (including sensing, anticounterfeiting, and photoelectric devices, among others). Finally, existing challenges and promising future directions are discussed, laying a platform for the design of afterglow materials for specific applications.

U-type π-conjugated phosphorescent ligand sensitized lanthanide metal-organic frameworks for efficient white-light-emitting diodes

Lanthanide metal-organic framework (Ln-MOF) based phosphors for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) play an important role in the fields of solid-state lighting and display. The rational design of organic antennae to address the drawback of low extinction coefficients of the lanthanide ions is highly desired. In this work, we provide a new design strategy to achieve an energy transfer molecule with a through-space conjugated folded structure, which can strengthen the skeleton rigidity and facilitate triplet state energy transfer. Consequently, one U-type π-conjugated molecule 2,6-bis(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy) pyridine (H4L) was selected as a light gatherer to sensitize lanthanide ions for the construction of Ln-MOFs [Ln(HL)(H2O)3]n (Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF), which exhibit a long-lived luminescence lifetime (0.88 ms for Eu-MOF and 1.31 ms for Tb-MOF) and high quantum yields (50.87% for Eu-MOF and 85.64% for Tb-MOF). Furthermore, a white LED device with a colour rendering index (89) was fabricated using the mixture of Ln-MOFs with a commercial blue phosphor.

Fast photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B using indium-porphyrin based cationic MOF under visible light irradiation

A broad light-harvesting range and efficient charge separation are two main ways to enhance the visible photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. Herein, an ionic porphyrin MOF [In(TPyP)]·(NO3) (1) (TPyP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)-21H,23H-porphyrin) was synthesized via in situ metalation. The orderly arranged porphyrin photosensitizer and the internal electric field between the MOF host and NO3- guests enable effective visible light response and electron-hole separation. Consequently, the as-synthesized MOF shows efficient photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) organic pollutants. It can degrade 99.07% of RhB within only 20 minutes under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm) with a high chemical reaction rate constant of 0.2400 min-1. The photocatalytic activity of the title MOF is more efficient than those of other reported MOFs, COFs and even inorganic semiconductors. The reusability, energy level, band gap, charge distribution and main degradation mechanisms of the photocatalyst were well studied.

Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets Boosting Red Long Afterglow via Highly Efficient Energy Transfer

Room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) based long-afterglow materials have shown broad application prospects in smart sensors, biological imaging, photodynamic therapy, and many others. However, the fabrication of red long-afterglow materials still faces a great challenge due to the competitive relationship between RTP efficiency and lifetime. In this work, we reported a series of layered double hydroxide (LDHs) nanosheets with red long-afterglow (quantum yield up to 42.35% and lifetime up to 256.77 ms) by taking advantage of the highly efficient triplet-triplet energy transfer from green phosphorescent LDHs to the red fluorescent dye rhodamine B (RhB, as a guest molecule). Specifically, the Zn-based LDHs@RhB composite (Zn-Al-LDH-4-CBBA@RhB) presents energy transfer efficiency as high as 95.18%, and the red long-afterglow could even be excited upon white-light irradiation. Benefiting from the time-resolved afterglow, the LDHs@RhB composites exhibit great potential in the fields of anticounterfeiting and information encryption.

Thermally-assisted photosensitized emission in a trivalent terbium complex

Luminescent lanthanide complexes containing effective photosensitizers are promising materials for use in displays and sensors. The photosensitizer design strategy has been studied for developing the lanthanide-based luminophores. Herein, we demonstrate a photosensitizer design using dinuclear luminescent lanthanide complex, which exhibits thermally-assisted photosensitized emission. The lanthanide complex comprised Tb(III) ions, six tetramethylheptanedionates, and phosphine oxide bridge containing a phenanthrene frameworks. The phenanthrene ligand and Tb(III) ions are the energy donor (photosensitizer) and acceptor (emission center) parts, respectively. The energy-donating level of the ligand (lowest excited triplet (T₁) level = 19,850 cm^-1) is lower than the emitting level of the Tb(III) ion (⁵D₄ level = 20,500 cm^-1). The long-lived T₁ state of the energy-donating ligands promoted an efficient thermally-assisted photosensitized emission of the Tb(III) acceptor (⁵D₄ level), resulting in a pure-green colored emission with a high photosensitized emission quantum yield (73%).

Porous functional metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed from different N-heterocyclic carboxylic ligands for gas adsorption/separation

This review mainly summarizes the recent progress of MOFs composed of N-heterocyclic carboxylate ligands in gas sorption/separation. This work may help to understand the relationship between the structures of MOFs and gas sorption/separation.

Luminescence investigation of Sm3+ ,Eu2+ -activated/co-activated Ba2 AlB4 O7 Cl phosphors: novel red to blue colour tuning in chloroborates

Borochlorate phosphors have shown their worth in modern day lighting over the last few years. Colour tunability of the phosphor is a modern techniques used to obtain white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). In the proposed work, Sm³⁺ ,Eu²⁺ -activated/co-activated Ba₂ AlB₄ O₇ Cl phosphors were investigated for WLED applications as well as display devices. A convectional solid-state diffusion method was used to synthesize the proposed phosphors. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of the proposed phosphors confirmed the crystalline nature of the sample. Morphological studies on the samples were carried out using scanning electron microscopy analysis. A photoluminescence study of the colour tunable phosphor showed the characteristic peak of Sm³⁺ together with one broad peak for Eu²⁺ ions. Red to blue colour tunability was observed in the proposed phosphor with enhancement of Eu²⁺ ions. All these results showed the worth of this sample in WLED applications as well as in display devices.

A new mode of luminescence in lanthanide oxalates metal–organic frameworks

Two lanthanide metal–organic frameworks [Ln-MOFs, Ln = Eu(III), Tb(III)] composed of oxalic acid and Ln building units were hydrothermally synthesized and fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscope, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, their magnetic susceptibility measurements were obtained using SQUID based vibrating sample magnetometer (MPMS 3, Quantum Design). Both Ln-MOFs exhibited highly efficient luminescent property. Solid-state photoluminescence (PL) measurements revealed phosphorescence emission bands of Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF centered at 618 nm (red emission) and 550 nm (green emission) upon excitation at 396 nm and 285 nm, respectively. Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF displayed a phosphorescence quantum yield of 53% and 40%, respectively. Time-resolved PL analyses showed very long lifetime values, at 600 and 1065 ± 1 µs for Eu-MOF and Tb-MOF, respectively. Calculations performed by density functional theory indicated a charge transfer form metal centres to the ligand which was in good agreement with the experimental studies. Therefore, this new mode of highly photoluminescent MOF materials is studied for the first time which paves the way for better understanding of these systems for potential applications.

Limitation of room temperature phosphorescence efficiency in metal organic frameworks due to triplet-triplet annihilation

The effect of triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) on the room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is studied in benchmark RTP MOFs based on Zn metal centers and isophthalic or terephthalic acid linkers (ZnIPA and ZnTPA). The ratio of RTP to singlet fluorescence is observed to decrease with increasing excitation power density. Explicitly, in ZnIPA the ratio of the RTP to fluorescence is 0.58 at 1.04 mW cm−2, but only 0.42 at (the still modest) 52.6 mW cm−2. The decrease in ratio is due to the reduction of RTP efficiency at higher excitation due to TTA. The density of triplet states increases at higher excitation power densities, allowing triplets to diffuse far enough during their long lifetime to meet another triplet and annihilate. On the other hand, the shorter-lived singlet species can never meet an annihilate. Therefore, the singlet fluorescence scales linearly with excitation power density whereas the RTP scales sub-linearly. Equivalently, the efficiency of fluorescence is unaffected by excitation power density but the efficiency of RTP is significantly reduced at higher excitation power density due to TTA. Interestingly, in time-resolved measurements, the fraction of fast decay increases but the lifetime of long tail of the RTP remains unaffected by excitation power density. This may be due to the confinement of triplets to individual grains, leading decay to be faster until there is only one triplet per grain left. Subsequently, the remaining “lone triplets” decay with the unchanging rate expressed by the long tail. These results increase the understanding of RTP in MOFs by explicitly showing the importance of TTA in determining the (excitation power density dependent) efficiency of RTP. Also, for applications in optical sensing, these results suggest that a method based on long tail lifetime of the RTP is preferable to a ratiometric approach as the former will not be affected by variation in excitation power density whereas the latter will be.

A zinc(II) complex based on 5-(ethylamino)isophthalic acid and trans-1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethene with a threefold interpenetrated crystal structure: synthesis, crystal structure and room temperature phosphorescence

A coordination complex {[Zn(EtAIPA)(dpe)]·H2O} n (1), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions based on 5-(ethylamino)isophthalic acid (H2EtAIPA) and trans-1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethene (dpe). The title complex was characterized by elemental analysis, UV/Vis absorption, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and emission properties. The as-prepared complex appears as a puckered 2D (4,4) network, The individual 2D nets are interlocked with each other to form a 3-fold parallel interpenetrated 2D architecture. Time-resolved measurements reveal cyan phosphorescence emission at room temperature.

Metal Ions as the Third Component Coordinate with the Guest to Stereoscopically Enhance the Phosphorescence Properties of Doped Materials

The construction of multicomponent doped systems is an important direction for the development of phosphorescence materials. Herein, benzophenone is selected as the host, phenylquinoline isomers are designed as guests, and seven metal ions are selected as the third component (Al³⁺, Cu^+/2+, Zn²⁺, Ga³⁺, Ag⁺, Cd²⁺, and In³⁺) to construct the three-component doped system. Ag⁺ and Cd²⁺ can considerably increase the emission intensity up to 38 times, and the highest phosphorescence quantum efficiency reaches 70%. Al³⁺, Ga³⁺, and In³⁺ can prolong the emission wavelength, and the phosphorescence wavelength can be red-shifted up to 60 nm. Cu²⁺, Ga³⁺, and In³⁺ can extend the phosphorescence lifetime by a maximum of 3.6 times. A series of experiments demonstrated that the coordination of metals and guests is the key to improve the phosphorescence properties. This work presents a simple and effective strategy to enhance the phosphorescence properties of doped materials.

Acridine based metal-organic framework host-guest featuring efficient photoelectrochemical-type photodetector and white LED

A novel metal-organic framework (MOF) host-guest material [Cd₃(EtOIPA)₄(HAD)₂]·H₂O has been successfully synthesized by the reaction of 5-ethoxyisophthalic acid (EtOIPA), acridine (AD) and Cd(II) salts under hydrothermal conditions. Structurally, the title MOF possesses a trinucleate Cd(II) based 2D double-layer with the protonated AD cations as the template encapsulated into the grids. The combination of experiments and theoretical calculations reveals that the orderly arrangement of EtOIPA dimers, protonated AD cations and trinucleate Cd(II) clusters generates highly delocalized π-electron channels with a prolonged exciton lifetime. The MOF powders show bright yellow emission with a long lifetime of 50.63 ns. Photoelectrochemical measurements reveal a high photocurrent density ratio of 290 between light and dark conditions at 0 V bias potential, making it a perfect self-driven photodetector. By coating the yellow phosphor on a commercially available blue LED, a high performance white LED with CIE, CCT and CRI values of (0.325, 0.336), 88.2 and 5844 K, respectively can be obtained.

Microenvironment Regulation of {Co4IIO4} Cubane for Syngas Photosynthesis

It is a great challenging task for selectivity control of both CO₂ photoreduction and water splitting to produce syngas via precise microenvironment regulation. Herein, a series of UiO-type Eu-MOFs (Eu-bpdc, Eu-bpydc, Ru_x-Eu-bpdc, and Ru_x-Eu-bpydc) with different surrounding confined spaces were designed and synthesized. These photosensitizing Ru_x-Eu-MOFs were used as the molecular platform to encapsulate the [Co^II₄(dpy{OH}O)₄(OAc)₂(H₂O)₂]²⁺ (Co₄) cubane cluster for constructing Co₄@Ru_x-Eu-MOF (x = 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4) heterogeneous photocatalysts for efficient CO₂ photoreduction and water splitting. The H₂ and CO yields can reach 446.6 and 459.8 μmol·g^-1, respectively, in 10 h with Co₄@Ru_0.1-Eu-bpdc as the catalyst, and their total yield can be dramatically improved to 2500 μmol·g^-1 with the ratio of CO/H₂ ranging from 1:1 to 1:2 via changing the photosensitizer content in the confined space. By increasing the N content around the cubane, the photocatalytic performance drops sharply in Co₄@Ru_0.1-Eu-bpydc, but with an enhanced proportion of CO in the final products. In the homogeneous system, the Co₄ cubane was surrounding with Ru photosensitizers via week interactions, which can drive water splitting into H₂ with >99% selectivity. Comprehensive structure-function analysis highlights the important role of microenvironment regulation in the selectivity control via constructing homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic systems. This work provides a new insight for engineering a catalytic microenvironment of the cubane cluster for selectivity control of CO₂ photoreduction and water splitting.

Facile Synthesis of a Long Afterglow Calcium-Organic Framework in Water

Presented here is a water-stable Ca-MOF that has been facilely synthesized from the metastable 3D framework in water and exhibits room-temperature phosphorescence with second scale long afterglow.

Red room temperature phosphorescence of lead halide based coordination polymer showing efficient angle-dependent polarized emission and photoelectric performance

The development of organic-inorganic hybrid materials with long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) has attracted tremendous attention owing to their promising applications in the optoelectronic and anti-counterfeiting fields. In this work, by the selection of lead halide and electron-poor heteroaromatic molecule 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), a coordination polymer [Pb(phen)Cl₂] has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. This complex shows an alternating arrangement of a long-range order of phen π-conjugated systems and lead halide inorganic chains as revealed by X-ray single-crystal structural analysis. This structural character and special chemical components endow this hybrid material with a rare example of red room temperature phosphorescence. Its electronic structure and electronic transition behavior were further examined by theoretical calculations. Meanwhile, the film of the complex features remarkable angle-dependent polarized emission and photoelectric performance.

Size-Induced Highly Selective Synthesis of Organometallic Rectangular Macrocycles and Heterometallic Cage Based on Half-Sandwich Rhodium Building Block

The controlled synthesis of organometallic supramolecular macrocycles cages remains interesting and challenging work in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Here, two tetranuclear rectangular macrocycles and an octuclear cage were designed and synthesized utilizing a rigid and functionalized pillar linker, 2,6-bis(pyridin-4-yl)-1,7-dihydrobenzo [1,2-d:4,5-d']diimidazole (BBI4PY) based on three half-sandwich rhodium building blocks bearing different sizes. X-ray crystallography in combination with 1H NMR spectroscopy elucidated that the two building blocks with shorter spacers only result in rectangular macrocycles. However, the building block of bulkier size to avoid the π-π stacking interactions between two ligands BBI4PY led to the formation of an octuclear cage complex. The latter cage contains two types of metal ions, namely Rh3+ and Cu2+, showing significant characteristics of heterogeneous metal-assembling compounds. In addition, the cage accommodates two free isopropyl ether solvent molecules, thus displaying host-guest behavior.

Synthesis and structure of a zinc(II) coordination polymer assembled with 5-(3-carboxybenzyloxy)isophthalic acid and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane

A zinc(II) coordination polymer [Zn(cyip)(bpe)] n (1), (cyipH2 = 5-(3-carboxybenzyloxy)-isophthalic acid, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane), has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Its structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and further characterized by elemental analysis and IR spectra. Complex 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group I2/a. In 1, the [cyip]2– ligand bridges the Zn(II) cations to form infinite chains, which are connected through O–H···O hydrogen bonds into layers in the form of 2-fold interpenetrated nets.

Triplet exciton dynamics of pure organics with halogen substitution boosted two photon absorption and room temperature phosphorescence: A theoretical perspective

Organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) molecules have shown promising applications in organic light emitting diodes and vivo imaging. Thus, triplet exciton dynamics in solid phase should be revealed and the molecule should possess large two photon absorption (TPA) cross sections under near-infrared excitation. The effects of halogen substitution and intermolecular interaction on RTP and TPA properties are studied at molecular level for a series of derivatives. Surrounding environment in solid phase is considered by combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics method. Intermolecular interactions are evaluated by the independent gradient model and calculated through the molecular force field energy decomposition method. Minimum energy crossing point, Huang-Rhys factor and reorganization energy are discussed, triplet exciton dynamics are investigated by thermal vibration correlation function method. Results indicate that the largest TPA cross sections are found for molecule in water. The halogen substitution can enlarge the proportion of (π, π*) and facilitate the intersystem crossing process. Restricted intramolecular rotation motions of dihedral angle in low frequency regions are found for Br-Np-Cz-BF₂ in solid phase. While enhanced vibrations of bond length and bond angle in high frequency regions are detected for I-Np-Cz-BF₂. Effects of halogen substitution and intermolecular interaction on triplet exciton dynamics are highlighted.

Organically tuned white-light emission from two zero-dimensional Cd-based hybrids

In this work, we report two zero-dimensional Cd-based hybrid compounds, denoted CdACP and CdODA, where the Cd atoms adopt tetrahedral geometry. The optical analysis reveals that these materials are classified as wide-gap semi-conductors which makes them suitable for optoelectronic applications. The photoluminescence analysis proves the wavelength dependent white-light emission behavior of the investigated materials. The structural-optical property studies show that, thanks to the heavy halide effect, the CdACP exhibits both fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence through harvesting triplet states. Meanwhile, in contrast to CdACP, the white light emission from CdODA is purely fluorescence in nature. In fact, within CdODA, both C-H⋯π and N-H⋯N interactions facilitate the intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) between the different cations which leads to ultra-fast fluorescence through excited state ESIPT. Under sub-gap excitations, the inorganic sub-lattice is responsible for the blue-green emission through the STE mechanism, while the organic cations contribute by an intense red emission.

CuII Ion Doping Enhances the Water Stability of Luminescent Metal–Organic Framework, Realizing the Detection of Fe3+ and Antibiotics in Aqueous Solutions

Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (LMOFs) have been widely developed in the field of chemical sensing owing to their outstanding photoluminescence performance, high selectivity, anti-interference, high sensitivity, and fast response, and have become one of the research hotspots of emerging functional materials. However, in practical applications, many tests are carried out in the water environment, and fragile water stability greatly limits the application of MOFs in the field. Therefore, it is important to develop a method to enhance the water stability of MOFs. Herein, a new complex {[Zn(L)]·CH₃CN}_n (Zn-MOF, H₂L = 5-(benzimidazol-1-yl) isophthalic acid) with a superior photophysical property has been synthesized first. Its water stability was highly enhanced by the doping of Cu^II ions by the one-pot method. In addition, the detection performances of doping material Cu_0.1/Zn-MOF for sixteen metal ions and thirteen antibiotics were well studied. It was found that Cu_0.1/Zn-MOF displays high sensitivity, fast response, lower detection limit, and long-term stability for the detection of Fe³⁺, NFT, NFZ, FZD, and TC in the aqueous medium.

An anthracene based metal-organic framework showing efficient angle-dependent polarized emission, luminescence thermometry, and photoelectronic response

The development of luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted extensive attention due to their applications in photoelectric devices, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), anti-counterfeiting, biological imaging and so on. In this work, a novel anthracene based metal-organic framework, [Cd(DCPA)(DMF)]·(H₂O) (1) (H₂DCPA = 9,10-di(p-carboxyphenyl)anthracene), has been successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The highly ordered arrangement and special spatial conformation of the anthracene chromophore play a significant role in the photophysical properties of 1. The combination of theoretical calculations and experiments shows that the molecular orbitals have good separation for inhibiting the recombination of electrons and holes. Furthermore, the fluorescence emission of 1 can be instantaneously and reversibly tuned between blue and green at different polarizing angles. Temperature-dependent fluorescence measurements indicate a good linear relationship between the maximum emission intensity/wavelength and the temperature for efficient thermochromism and luminescence thermometry. Photoelectric measurements reveal that 1 shows high performance of photocurrent generation under light illumination. Therefore, our research affords a new perspective to extend the application of luminescent MOFs in the fields of polarized emission, thermometry and photoelectronic response.

Investigation on the catalytic behavior of a novel thulium-organic framework with a planar tetranuclear {Tm4} cluster as the active center for chemical CO2 fixation

Herein, the exquisite combination of coplanar [Tm₄(CO₂)₁₀(μ₃-OH)₂(μ₂-HCO₂)(OH₂)₂] clusters ({Tm₄}) and structure-oriented functional BDCP^5- leads to the highly robust nanoporous {Tm₄}-organic framework {(Me₂NH₂)[Tm₄(BDCP)₂(μ₃-OH)₂(μ₂-HCO₂)(H₂O)₂]·7DMF·5H₂O}_n (NUC-37, H₅BDCP = 2,6-bis(2,4-dicarboxylphenyl)-4-(4-carboxylphenyl)pyridine). To the best of our knowledge, NUC-37 is the first anionic {Ln₄}-based three-dimensional framework with embedded hierarchical microporous and nanoporous channels, among which each larger one is shaped by six rows of coplanar {Tm₄} clusters and characterized by plentiful coexisting Lewis acid-base sites on the inner wall including open Tm^III sites, N_pyridine atoms, μ₃-OH and μ₂-HCO₂. Catalytic experimental studies exhibit that NUC-37 possesses highly selective catalytic activity on the cycloaddition of epoxides with CO₂ as well as high recyclability under gentle conditions, which should be ascribed to its nanoscale channels, rich bifunctional active sites, and stable physicochemical properties. This work offers an effective means for synthesizing productive cluster-based Ln-MOF catalysts by employing structure-oriented ligands and controlling the solvothermal reaction conditions.

Efficient Energy-Transfer-Induced High Photoelectric Conversion in a Dye-Encapsulated Ionic Pyrene-Based Metal-Organic Framework

Selective construction and stability studies of a molecular trefoil knot and Solomon link

Two novel compounds, a molecular trefoil knot and a Solomon link, were constructed successfully through the cooperation of multiple π-π stacking interactions. A reversible transformation between the trefoil knot and the corresponding [2 + 2] macrocycle could be achieved by solvent- and guest-induced effects. However, the Solomon link maintains its stability in different concentrations, solvents and guest molecules. Single-crystal X-ray crystallographic data, NMR spectroscopic experiments and ESI-MS support the synthesis and structural assignments. These synthesis methods open the door to the further development of smart materials, which will push the advancement of rational design of biomaterials.

Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Co-Crystal Showing Direct White Light and Photo-Electric Conversion

The development of molecular crystalline materials with efficient room-temperature phosphorescence has been obtained much attention due to their fascinating photophysical properties and potential applications in the fields of data storage, bioimaging and photodynamic therapy. Herein, a new co-crystal complex [(DCPA) (AD)₂] (DCPA = 9,10-di (4-carboxyphenyl)anthracene; AD = acridine) has been synthesized by a facile solvothermal process. Crystal structure analysis reveals that the co-crystal possesses orderly and alternant arrangement of DCPA donors and AD acceptors at molecular level. Fixed by strong hydrogen bonds, the DCPA molecule displays seriously twisty spatial conformation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show well separation of HOMO and LUMO for this co-crystal system, suggesting the efficient triplet excitons generation. Photoluminescence measurements show intensive cyan fluorescence (58.20 ns) and direct white phosphorescence (325 µs) emission at room-temperature. The transient current density–time curve reveals a typical switching electric response under the irradiation of simulated light, reveal that the [(DCPA) (AD)₂] co-crystal has a high photoelectric response performance.

Angle-Dependent Polarized Emission and Photoelectron Performance of Dye-Encapsulated Metal-Organic Framework

Molecule-based crystalline materials with angle-dependent polarized emission have attracted considerable attention owing to their extensive applications in displays and anticounterfeiting. Herein, one anionic metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Zn_2.5(μ₃-OH)(NDC)₂(HNDC)](HPIM)}_n was constructed on the basis of an excellent photoactive ligand naphthalene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (H₂NDC). The protonated 2-propylimidazole (HPIM) guests residing in the nanochannels of MOF can be exchanged by a D-π-A cationic dye. The resulted host-guest system shows a rare example of ratiometric fluorescent polarizations and highly enhanced photoelectron performance in comparison with the pristine MOF.

High Loading of Air-Sensitive Guest Molecules into Polycrystalline Metal-Organic Framework Hosts

Loading air-sensitive guest molecules inside polycrystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) hosts is currently a challenging process. In this study, the air-sensitive guest molecule magnesocene (MgCp₂) was loaded into two porous MOF hosts, polycrystalline Ni-MOF-74 and NH₂-MIL-101(Al), using a gas-phase infiltration process. X-ray powder diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray mapping measurements demonstrated that MgCp₂ was successfully loaded inside the three-dimensional pores of NH₂-MIL-101(Al) with a maximum loading of 43.1 wt %. MgCp₂ was found to cover the outside of Ni-MOF-74 owing to the small one-dimensional channels.

Optimization of plasmonic metal structures for improving the hydrogen production efficiency of metal-organic frameworks

The introduction of plasmonic metals of gold (Au) nanoparticles onto metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been testified as an efficient approach to boost the H2 evolution ability because the excited Au particles can generate hot electrons that can then be injected into MOFs to inhibit the recombination of charges. Generally, Au particles possess two modes of polarization, which are transverse and longitudinal polarizations. However, which of the two modes is more efficient remains unclear and is yet to be disclosed. Herein, we report a strategy of finely controlling the transverse and longitudinal polarizations by gradually reducing the length, without changing the width of Au rods, and then combining with MOF Pt@MIL-125 to construct Pt@MIL-125/Au Schottky junctions, for investigating the polarization mode effects. The results indicate that with the reduction in the length of Au rods from 67 nm to 38 nm, the transverse polarization will be increased, which can lead to a significant enhancement in the electron-hole separation efficiency and H2 generation activity. When Au is in spherical shape, the transverse polarization effect reaches the highest level, thereby achieving the highest H2 production rate of 265.1 μmol g-1 h, which is 1.6 times more than that of 67 nm Au rods. The enhancement can be attributed to the significant accelerated electron transfer rate induced by transverse polarization and evidenced by ESR analysis. The results indicate that the transverse polarization is more efficient for hot electron injection and highlight that the Au sphere is a more appropriate candidate for producing the maximum SPR effect during photocatalysis.
