Neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes of the benzene tetraanion

Rare-earth metal complexes of the parent benzene tetraanion and neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal arene complexes have remained elusive. Here, we report the first neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal complexes of the parent benzene tetraanion supported by a monoanionic β-diketiminate (BDI) ligand. Reduction of the trivalent rare-earth metal diiodide precursors (BDI)MI2(THF) (BDI = HC(C(Me)N[C6H3-(3-pentyl)2-2,6])2; M = Y, 1-Y; M = Sm, 1-Sm) in benzene or para-xylene by potassium graphite yielded the neutral inverse-sandwich rare-earth metal arene complexes [(BDI)M(THF) n ]2(μ-η6,η6-arene) (M = Y, Sm; arene = benzene, 2-M; arene = para-xylene, 3-M). Single crystal X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and magnetic characterization studies, together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that these neutral rare-earth metal arene complexes possess an [M3+-(arene)4--M3+] electronic structure with strong metal-arene δ interactions. The arene exchange reactivity shows that 2-Sm has higher stability than 3-Sm. Furthermore, 2-Sm can behave as a four-electron reductant to reduce unsaturated organic substrates. Particularly, while the reaction of 2-Sm with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) yielded (BDI)Sm(η8-COT) (4-Sm), 2-Sm reacted with 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne to afford (BDI)Sm(η4-C4Ph2) (5-Sm), the first rare-earth metallacyclopentatriene complex.

Alkyl backbone variations in common β-diketiminate ligands and applications to N-heterocyclic silylene chemistry

We report the extension of the common β-diketimine proligand class, RArnacnacH (HC(RCNAr)2H), where R is an alkyl group such as Et or iPr, plus Ph, and Ar is a sterically demanding aryl substituent such as Dip = 2,6-diispropylphenyl, Dep = 2,6-diethylphenyl, Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl or mesityl, Xyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl, via one-pot condensation procedures. When a condensation reaction is carried out using the chemical dehydrating agent PPSE (polyphosphoric acid trimethylsilylester), β-diketiminate phosphorus(V) products such as (iPrMesnacnac)PO2 can also be obtained, which can be converted to the respective proligand iPrMesnacnacH via alkaline hydrolysis. The RArnacnacH proligands can be converted to their alkali metal complexes with common methods and we have found that deprotonation of iPrDipnacnacH is significantly more sluggish than that of related β-diketimines with smaller backbone alkyl groups. The basicity of the RArnacnac- anions can play a role in the success of their salt metathesis chemistry and we have prepared and structurally characterised the EtDipnacnac-derived silicon(II) compounds (EtDipnacnac)SiBr and (EtDipnacnac')Si, where EtDipnacnac' is the deprotonated variant MeCHC(NDip)CHC(NDip)Et.

Contrasting a series of bidentate amido phosphine oxide, sulfide, or selenide ligands and complexes of dimethyl aluminum and indium

A series of EP(V)-imine phosphine-imine ligands (Dipp-NC(CH3)-(CH2)-PE(Ph2)) (Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, E = O, S, Se) and corresponding dimethyl aluminum and indium complexes were prepared and characterized using multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy and SC-XRD. Solution-state 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy indicate a mixture of isomers in solution (C6D6, CDCl3, and CD3CN). Solid state structures of both the imine and (E)-enamine isomers of the oxygen-based ligand have been observed. These three ligands (L) were then deprotonated with M(CH3)3 (M = Al or In), with methane loss forming a 6-membered ring via bidentate chelation ((κ2-L)M(CH3)2). The indium/oxide complex also crystallized as a 12-membered ring.

Recent advances in the chemistry of isolable carbene analogues with group 13-15 elements

Carbenes (R2C:), compounds with a divalent carbon atom containing only six valence shell electrons, have evolved into a broader class with the replacement of the carbene carbon or the RC moiety with main group elements, leading to the creation of main group carbene analogues. These analogues, mirroring the electronic structure of carbenes (a lone pair of electrons and an empty orbital), demonstrate unique reactivity. Over the last three decades, this area has seen substantial advancements, paralleling the innovations in carbene chemistry. Recent studies have revealed a spectrum of unique carbene analogues, such as monocoordinate aluminylenes, nitrenes, and bismuthinidenes, notable for their extraordinary properties and diverse reactivity, offering promising applications in small molecule activation. This review delves into the isolable main group carbene analogues that are in the forefront from 2010 and beyond, spanning elements from group 13 (B, Al, Ga, In, and Tl), group 14 (Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb) and group 15 (N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). Specifically, this review focuses on the potential amphiphilic species that possess both lone pairs of electrons and vacant orbitals. We detail their comprehensive synthesis and stabilization strategies, outlining the reactivity arising from their distinct structural characteristics.

Expanding the Scope of Aluminum Chemistry with Noninnocent Ligands

ConspectusAluminum is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust at 8%, and it is also widely available domestically in many countries worldwide, which ensures a stable supply chain. To further the applications of aluminum (Al), such as in catalysis and electronic and energy storage materials, there has been significant interest in the synthesis and characterization of new Al coordination compounds that can support electron transfer (ET) and proton transfer (PT) chemistry. This has been achieved using redox and chemically noninnocent ligands (NILs) combined with the highly stable M(III) oxidation state of Al and in some cases the heavier group 13 ions, Ga and In.When ligands participate in redox chemistry or facilitate the breaking or making of new bonds, they are often termed redox or chemically noninnocent, respectively. Al(III) in particular supports rich ligand-based redox chemistry because it is so redox inert and will support the ligand across many charge and protonation states without entering into the reaction chemistry. To a lesser extent, we have reported on the heavier group 13 elements Ga and In, and this chemistry will also be included in this Account, where available.This Account is arranged into two technical sections, which are (1) Structures of Al-NIL complexes and (2) Reactivity of Al-NIL complexes. Highlights of the research work include reversible redox chemistry that has been enabled by ligand design to shut down radical coupling pathways and to prevent loss of H2 from unsaturated ligand sites. These reversible redox properties have in turn enabled the characterization of Class III electron delocalization through Al when two NIL are bound to the Al(III) in different charge states. Characterization of the metalloaromatic character of square planar Al and Ga complexes has been achieved, and characterization of the delocalized electronic structures has provided a model within which to understand and predict the ET and PT chemistry of the NIL group 13 compounds. The capacity of Al-NIL complexes to perform ET and PT has been employed in reactions that use ET or PT reactivity only or in reactions where coupled ET/PT affords hydride transfer chemistry. As an example, ligand-based PT reactions initiate metal-ligand cooperative bond activation pathways for catalysis: this includes acceptorless dehydrogenation of formic acid and anilines and transfer hydrogenation chemistry. In a complementary approach, ligand based ET/PT chemistry has been used in the study of dihydropyridinate (DHP-) chemistry where it was shown that N-coordination of group 13 ions lowers kinetic barriers to DHP- formation. Taken together, the discussion presented herein illustrates that the NIL chemistry of Al(III), and also of Ga(III) and In(III) holds promise for further developments in catalysis and energy storage.

Metal-metal cooperativity boosts Lewis basicity and reduction properties of the bis(gallanediyl) CyL2Ga2

The interplay of two proximate gallium centres equips the bimetallic complex CyL2Ga2 (1, CyL2 = 1,2-trans-Cy[NC(Me)C(H)C(Me)N(Dip)]2, Dip = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3) with increased Lewis basicity and higher reducing power compared to the monometallic gallanediyl LGa (2, L = HC[MeCN(Dip)]2) as evidenced by cross-over experiments. Quantum chemical calculations were employed to support the experimental findings.

Diversity of transformation of heteroallenes on acenaphthene-1,2-diimine aluminum oxide

The reactions of oxide [(dpp-bian)Al(μ2-O)2Al(dpp-bian)] (1) (dpp-bian = 1,2-bis[(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino]acenaphthene) with phenyl- or cyclohexylisocyanates result in the formation of carbonimidate derivatives [(dpp-bian)Al(μ-O)(μ-RNCO2)Al(dpp-bian)] (R = Ph, 2; Cy, 3). Addition of N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide to compound 1 leads to the formation of ureate complex [(dpp-bian)Al(μ-O)(μ-(CyN)2CO)Al(dpp-bian)] (4). The reactions of the oxide 1 with pinacolborane and catecholborane afford oxo-bridged hydride [{(dpp-bian)Al(H)}(μ-O){Al(OBpin)(dpp-bian)}] (5) and compound [{(dpp-bian)Al(OBCat)}2(μ-O)] (7), respectively. Insertion of cyclohexylisocyanate into the Al-H bond of compound 5 gives CO insertion product [{(dpp-bian)Al(OC(H)NCy)}(μ-O){Al(OBpin)(dpp-bian)}] (6). New compounds have been characterized by ESR and IR spectroscopy; their molecular structures have been established by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The oxide 1 serves as a catalyst for the hydroboration of heteroallenes (isocyanates, carbodiimides) with pinacolborane.

Gallaphosphene L(Cl)GaPGaL: A novel phosphinidene transfer reagent

Gallaphosphene L(Cl)GaPGaL 1 (L=HC[C(Me)N(Ar)]2 ; Ar=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) reacts with N-heterocyclic carbenes R NHC (R NHC=[CMeN(R)]2 C; R=Me, iPr) to R NHC-coordinated phosphinidenes R NHC→PGa(Cl)L (R=Me 2 a, iPr 2 b) and with isonitriles RNC (R=iPr, Cy) to 1,3-phosphaazaallenes L(Cl)GaP=C=N-R (R=iPr 3 a, Cy 3 b), respectively. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that 2 a/2 b possess two localized lone pair of electrons, whereas 3 a/3 b only show one localized lone pair as was reported for gallaphosphene 1. 2 b reacts with 2.5 equivalents of a borane (THF ⋅ BH3 ) to the NHC-stabilized phosphinidene-borane complex [iPr NHC→P(BH2 )]2 (BH3 )3 4 with concomitant formation of LGa(H)Cl 5. 2-5 are characterized by heteronuclear (1 H, 13 C{1 H}, 31 P{1 H}) NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).

A simple sequential addition protocol for the reductive coupling of ketones and aldehydes by a potassium aluminyl grants access to unsymmetrical pinacolate derivatives. Isolation of an aluminium ketyl complex presents evidence for the accessibility of radical species. Product release from the aluminium centre was achieved using an iodosilane, forming the disilylated 1,2-diol and a neutral aluminium iodide, thereby demonstrating the steps required to generate a closed synthetic cycle for pinacol (cross) coupling at an aluminyl anion.

Synthesis and Reactivity of Aluminum Disilacyclopropenes. Cyclic AlSi2 Delocalized 2π Systems

The synthesis, structures, and reactivity of the first unsaturated AlSi2 three-membered ring systems were described. Reactions of dilithiodisilene [(NHB)LiSi═SiLi(NHB)] (1, NHB = diazaborolyl) with aluminum halides AlCl3, Ar(SiMe3)NAlCl2 (Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3), Cp*AlBr2 (Cp* = C5Me5), and TipAlBr2·Et2O (Tip = 2,4,6-iPr3C6H2) led to the formation of AlSi2 three-membered ring species, solvated (NHBSi)2AlCl(OEt2) (2) and solvent-free (NHBSi)2AlN(SiMe3) Ar (3), (NHBSi)2AlCp* (4), and (NHBSi)2AlTip (5), in good yields. X-ray diffraction studies and DFT calculations disclosed delocalized AlSi2 2π electron systems. Methanolysis of 4a resulted in cleavage of the Al-Si σ and Si-Si π bonds, giving trihydrodisilane (NHB)H(MeO)SiSiH2 (NHB) (6). Reaction of 4b with 4 equiv of N2O and H2C═CH2 resulted in the insertion of four oxygen atoms and four H2C═CH2 π bonds into all of the Al-Si and Si-Si bonds, yielding the O- and CH2CH2-bridged polycyclic species 7 and 8, demonstrating the synergistic reactivity of the Al-Si and Si-Si bonds in the AlSi2 ring system.

Modification of a Common β-diketiminate NacNac Framework via Sequential Lithiation and Small Molecule Insertion

A widely utilised class of ligands in synthesis and catalysis, β-diketiminate (BDI) or NacNac compounds were initially considered innocent in the sense that they remained intact in all their applications. That changed when the γ-C-H unit of their NCCCN backbone was found to engage in reactions with electrophiles. Here, we show that this special reactivity can be used advantageously to prepare tripodal modifications of the common NacNac ligand derived from 2,6-diisopropylphenyl-β-methyldiketimine [NacNacH (Me, Dipp)]. Lithiation to give NacNacLi, followed by reactions with isocyanates, isothiocyanates and a carbodiimide, have afforded a series of tripodal NacNac variants having N,N,N,O; N,N,N,S; or N,N,N,N potential dentation sites, many of which have been crystallographically characterised. Distinct ligating modes of these new ligands have been elucidated through the crystal structures of their lithiated derivatives.

Germanium(II) Dithiolene Complexes

The 1 : 2 reaction of the imidazole-based dithiolate (2) with GeCl2  • dioxane in THF/TMEDA gives 3, a TMEDA-complexed dithiolene-based germylene. Compound 3 is converted to monothiolate-complexed (5) and N-heterocyclic carbene-complexed (7) germanium(II) dithiolene complexes via Lewis base ligand exchange. A bis-dithiolene-based germylene (8), involving a 3c-4e S-Ge-S bond, has also been synthesized through controlled hydrolysis of 7. The bonding nature of 3, 5, and 8 was investigated by both experimental and theoretical methods.

Structures, Bonding Analyses and Reactivity of a Dicationic Digallene and Diindene Mimicking trans-bent Ditetrylenes

The reaction of bisdicyclohexylphosphinoethane (dcpe) and the subvalent MI sources [MI (PhF)2 ][pf] (M=Ga+ , In+ ; [pf]- =[Al(ORF )4 ]- ; RF =C(CF3 )3 ) yielded the salts [{M(dcpe)}2 ][pf]2 , containing the first dicationic, trans-bent digallene and diindene structures reported so far. The non-classical MI ⇆MI double bonds are surprisingly short and display a ditetrylene-like structure. The bonding situation was extensively analyzed by quantum chemical calculations, QTAIM (Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules) and EDA-NOCV (Energy Decomposition Analysis with the combination of Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence) analyses and is compared to that in the isoelectronic and isostructural, but neutral digermenes and distannenes. The dissolved [{Ga(dcpe)}2 ]2+ ([pf]- )2 readily reacts with 1-hexene, cyclooctyne, diphenyldisulfide, diphenylphosphine and under mild conditions at room temperature. This reactivity is analyzed and rationalized.

Experimental and Computational Study of a Confirmed Borylene-to-Diborene Dimerization

While the dimerization of heavier group 13 carbene analogues to the corresponding alkene analogues is known and relatively well understood, the dimerization of dicoordinate borylenes (LRB:, L = neutral donor; R = anionic substituent) to the corresponding diborenes (LRB═BRL) has never been directly observed. In this study we present the first example of a formal borylene-to-diborene dimerization through abstraction of a labile phosphine ligand from the tricoordinate hydroborylene precursor (CAAC)(Me3P)BH (CAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene) by bulky Lewis-acidic dihaloboranes (BX2Y, X = Cl, Br, Y = aryl, boryl), generating the corresponding dihydrodiborene (CAAC)HB═BH(CAAC) and (Me3P)BX2Y as the byproduct. An in-depth experimental and computational mechanistic analysis shows that this seemingly simple process (2 LL'BH + 2 BX2Y → LHB═BHL + 2 L'BX2Y) is in fact based on a complex sequence of finely tuned processes, involving the one-electron oxidation of and PMe3 abstraction from the borylene precursor by BX2Y, multiple halide transfers between (di)boron intermediates and BX2Y/[BX3Y]-, and multiple one-electron redox processes between diboron intermediates and the borylene precursor, which make the reaction ultimately autocatalytic in [(CAAC)(Me3P)BH]•+. The findings suggest that [LBXR]• boryl radicals are more likely coupling partners than dicoordinate LRB: borylenes in the reductive coupling of base-stabilized LBX2R boranes to LRB═BRL diborenes.

Cooperation towards nobility: equipping first-row transition metals with an aluminium sword

The exploration for noble metals substitutes in catalysis has become a highly active area of research, driven by the pursuit of sustainable chemical processes. Although the utilization of base metals holds great potential as an alternative, their successful implementation in predictable catalytic processes necessitates the development of appropriate ligands. Such ligands must be capable of controlling their intricate redox chemistry and promote two-electron events, thus mimicking well-established organometallic processes in noble metal catalysis. While numerous approaches for infusing nobility to base metals have been explored, metal-ligand cooperation has garnered significant attention in recent years. Within this context, aluminium-based ligands offer interesting features to fine-tune the activity of metal centres, but their application in base metal catalysis remains largely unexplored. This perspective seeks to highlight the most recent breakthroughs in the reactivity of heterobimetallic aluminium-base-metal complexes, while also showcasing their potential to develop novel and predictable catalytic transformations. By turning the spotlight on such heterobimetallic species, we aim to inspire chemists to explore aluminium-base-metal species and expand the range of their applications as catalysts.

Revealing unbound β-diketiminate anions: structural dynamics from caesium complexes

This study reports the first structural elucidation of β-diketiminate anions (BDI-), known for strong coordination, in their unbound form within caesium complexes. β-Diketiminate caesium salts (BDICs) were synthesised, and upon the addition of Lewis donor ligands, free BDI- anions and donor-solvated Cs+ cations were observed. Notably, the liberated BDI- anions exhibited an unprecedented dynamic cisoid-transoid exchange in solution.

Expanding the Utility of β-Diketiminate Ligands in Heavy Group VI Chemistry of Molybdenum and Tungsten

We report the synthesis of 17 molybdenum and tungsten complexes supported by the ubiquitous BDI ligand framework (BDI = β-diketiminate). The focal entry point is the synthesis of four molybdenum and tungsten(V) BDI complexes of the general formula [MO(BDI^R)Cl₂] [M = Mo, R = Dipp (1); M = W, R = Dipp (2); M = Mo, R = Mes (3); M = W, R = Mes (4)] synthesized by the reaction between MoOCl₃(THF)₂ or WOCl₃(THF)₂ and LiBDI^R. Reactivity studies show that the BDI^Dipp complexes are excellent precursors toward adduct formation, reacting smoothly with dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) and triethylphosphine oxide (OPEt₃). No reaction with small phosphines has been observed, strongly contrasting the chemistry of previously reported rhenium(V) complexes. Additionally, the complexes 1 and 2 are good precursors for salt metathesis reactions. While 1 can be chemically reduced to the first stable example of a Mo(IV) BDI complex 15, reduction of 2 resulted in degradation of the BDI ligand via a nitrene transfer reaction, leading to MAD (4-((2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imino)pent-2-enide) supported tungsten(V) and tungsten(VI) complexes 16 and 17. All reported complexes have been thoroughly studied by VT-NMR and (heteronuclear) NMR spectroscopy, as well as UV-vis and EPR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis.

[Ga@Bi10(NbMes)2]3-: a linear Nb-GaI-Nb filament coordinated by a bismuth cage

In this work, we report a low-valent Ga(I) complex, [Ga@Bi₁₀(NbMes)₂]^3-, with a linear Nb-Ga-Nb fragment, representing the first compound with Nb-Ga and Nb-Bi bonds. Quantum-chemical calculations reveal that the complex is an electron-precise cluster. The possible fragmentation pathway of the title cluster was studied by using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations.

Synthesis, characterisation and reactivity studies of chiral β-diketiminate-like supported aluminium Lewis acid complexes towards difficult Diels Alder cycloadditions

Synthesis and characterisation of several chiral, oxazoline containing β-diketiminate type ligand supported-aluminium compounds are reported. Together with 1 equiv. of Na(BAr^Cl₄) (Ar^Cl = 3,5-Cl₂-C₆H₃), these chiral Lewis acid complexes, which possess an "achiral end" and "chiral end" have been successfully utilised as catalysts in asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions of 1,3-cyclohexadiene and several different chalcones. Systematic increase in the steric demand of the ligand's "achiral end" of these complexes resulted in enhanced enantioinduction for the cyclisation of 1,3-cyclohexadiene and chalcone. Further structural modifications of the "chiral end" clearly established that having a tert-butyl group connected to the stereogenic centre of the oxazoline fragment yielded the highest enantioselectivity value for the examined cyclisation. A substrate scope was then expanded using several different dienophiles (i.e. chalcones) generating an enantiomeric excess range of 24-68%.

The emerging chemistry of the aluminyl anion

The chemistry of low valent p-block metal complexes continues to elicit interest in the research community, demonstrating reactivity that replicates and in some cases exceeds that of their more widely studied d-block metal counterparts. The introduction of the first aluminyl anion, a complex containing a formally anionic Al(I) centre charge balanced by an alkali metal (AM) cation, has established a platform for a new area of chemical research. The chemistry displayed by aluminyl compounds is expanding rapidly, with examples of reactivity towards a diverse range of small molecules and functional groups now reported in the literature. Herein we present an account of the structure and reactivity of the growing family of aluminyl compounds. In this context we examine the structural relationships between the aluminyl anion and the AM cations, which now include examples of AM = Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs. We report on the ability of these compounds to engage in bond-breaking and bond-forming reactions, which is leading towards their application as useful reagents in chemical synthesis. Furthermore we discuss the chemistry of bimetallic complexes containing direct Al-M bonds (M = Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn) and compounds with Al-E multiple bonds (E = NR, CR₂, O, S, Se, Te), where both classes of compound are derived directly from aluminyl anions.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Structural Analysis of [Al(NONDipp)(H)(SiH2Ph)] ( = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) Compounds, Made Via Oxidative Addition of Phenylsilane to Alkali Metal Aluminyls

We report the oxidative addition of phenylsilane to the complete series of alkali metal (AM) aluminyls [AM{Al(NON^Dipp)}]₂ (AM = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs). Crystalline products (1-AM) have been isolated as ether or THF adducts, [AM(L)_n][Al(NON^Dipp)(H)(SiH₂Ph)] (AM = Li, Na, K, Rb, L = Et₂O, n = 1; AM = Cs, L = THF, n = 2). Further to this series, the novel rubidium rubidiate, [{Rb(THF)₄}₂(Rb{Al(NON^Dipp)(H)(SiH₂Ph)}₂)]⁺ [Rb{Al(NON^Dipp)(H)(SiH₂Ph)}₂]^-, was isolated during an attempted recrystallization of Rb[Al(NON^Dipp)(H)(SiH₂Ph)] from a hexane/THF mixture. Structural and spectroscopic characterizations of the series 1-AM confirm the presence of μ-hydrides that bridge the aluminum and alkali metals (AM), with multiple stabilizing AM···π(arene) interactions to either the Dipp- or Ph-substituents. These products form a complete series of soluble, alkali metal (hydrido) aluminates that present a platform for further reactivity studies.

Hydroboration and Deoxygenation of CO2 Mediated by a Gallium(I) Cation

Hydroboration of CO₂ to formoxy borane occurs under ambient conditions in acetonitrile using pinacolborane HBpin in the presence of gallium(I) cation [(Me₄TACD)Ga][BAr₄] (1; Me₄TACD = N,N',N″,N'''-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane; Ar = C₆H₃-3,5-Me₂). Slow turnover was accompanied by side reactions including ligand scrambling of HBpin to give BH₃(CH₃CN) and crystalline B₂pin₃. When 1 was reacted with CO₂ alone, the formation of the gallium(III) carbonato complex [(Me₄TACD)Ga(κ₂-O₂CO)][BAr₄] (3) along with CO was observed. This complex was assumed to form via the unstable oxido cation [(Me₄TACD)Ga=O]⁺ (4). Reaction of 1 with N₂O in the presence of BPh₃ confirmed the formation of the oxido cation, which was spectroscopically characterized as a triphenylborane adduct [(Me₄TACD)Ga=O(BPh₃)][BAr₄] (4·BPh₃). CO was also detected when CO₂ was reacted with 1 in the presence of HBpin, suggesting that compound 3 may also be formed in initial stages of catalysis. Compound 3 reacts with HBpin to give formoxy borane, borane redistribution products, and an unidentified Me₄TACD-containing species 5, which was also observed in "catalytic" runs starting from 1, HBpin, and CO₂. Hydroboration of CO₂ using HBpin with slow turnover and competitive ligand scrambling was also observed in the presence of gallium(III) hydride dication [(Me₄TACD)GaH][BAr₄]₂ (2), which is unreactive toward CO₂ in the absence of HBpin.

A Phosphine-ß-diketiminate Nickel(I)-Complex for Small Molecule Activation

A bis(diphenyl)-phosphine functionalized ß-diketimine ligand (PNac-H) was applied for the synthesis of a subvalent Ni(I) complex [PNac-Ni]. Here, the Ni(I) center is stabilized by a tetradentate PNNP-type pocket, forming a square planar coordination sphere. Subsequently, the Ni(I) complex was investigated with regard to its reactivity and the activation of small molecules. The reductive potential of Ni(I) enabled an activation of different substrate classes, such as CH2 X2 (X=Br, I), I2 or Ph2 E2 (E=S, Se). The ligand's design allows a stabilization of the reactive Ni(I) species while at the same time enabling activation processes due to a hemilabile coordination behavior and accessible axial coordination sites. The activation products have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as elemental analysis.

Diverse reactivity of an iron-aluminium complex with substituted pyridines

The reaction of an Fe-Al complex with an array of substituted pyridines is reported. Depending on the substitution pattern of the substrate site-selective sp2 or sp3 C-H bond activation is observed. A series of reaction products are observed based on (i) C-Al bond formation, (ii) C-C bond formation by nucleophilic addition or (iii) deprotonation of the β-diketiminate ligand. A divergent set of mechanisms involving a common intermediate is proposed.

Direct Comparison of Subvalent, Polycationic Group 13 Cluster Compounds: Lessons learned on Isoelectronic DMPE Substituted Gallium and Indium Tetracation Salts

The tetracationic, univalent cluster compounds [{M(dmpe)}₄ ]⁴⁺ (M=Ga, In; dmpe=bis(dimethylphosphino)ethane) were synthesized as their pf salts ([pf]^- =[Al(OR^F )₄ ]^- ; R^F =C(CF₃ )₃ ). The four-membered ring in [{M(dmpe)}₄ ]⁴⁺ is slightly puckered for M=Ga and almost square planar for M=In. Yet, although structurally similar, only the gallium cluster is prevalent in solution, while the indium cluster forms temperature dependent equilibria that include even the monomeric cation [In(dmpe)]⁺ . This system is the first report of one and the same ligand inducing formation of isoelectronic and isostructural gallium/indium cluster cations. The system allows to study systematically analogies and differences with thermodynamic considerations and bonding analyses, but also to outline perspectives for bond activation using cationic, subvalent group 13 clusters.

Unravelling the Potential of Ylides in Stabilizing Low-Valent Group 13 Compounds: Theoretical Predictions of Stable, Five-Membered Group 13 (Aluminum and Gallium) Carbenoids Capable of Small-Molecule Activation

Computational investigations provide evidence toward the remarkable ability of strongly electron-donating ylidic functionalities in stabilizing singlet group 13 carbenoids with promising ligand properties. All of the proposed carbenoids are found to be considerably nucleophilic and possess significant singlet-triplet energy separation values. The calculated activation barriers and reaction free energies obtained for the cleavage of different enthalpically strong bonds by these carbenoids are found to be either comparable to or lower than those of the experimentally evaluated aluminum and gallium carbenoids, thereby indicating their potential in small-molecule activation.

Deoxygenating Reduction of CO2 by [Cp*Al]4 to Form a (Al3O2C)2 Cluster Featuring Two Ketene Moieties

Herein we report that the reaction of the low-valent aluminum(I) species [Cp*Al]₄ (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) with CO₂ exhibits complete cleavages of the C═O bonds. The deoxygenating reduction reaction of [Cp*Al]₄ with CO₂ at 120 °C afforded [(Cp*)₃Al₃O₂C(CO)]₂ (1), which featured two stacked (Al₃O₂C)₂ units and two C═C═O ketene moieties. Moreover, the isoelectronic analogues of diimine and isothiocyanate with CO₂ were also investigated, and the reactions of [Cp*Al]₄ with Dipp*-N═C═N-Dipp* and Dipp-C═N═S [Dipp* = 2,6-bis(diphenylmethyl)-4-tert-butylphenyl; Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl] afforded dialuminylimine (2) and tetrameric [Cp*AlS]₄ (3), respectively.

Structurally characterised intermediate of the oxidative addition of a heteroleptic germylene to gallanediyle

Bond activation reactions using main group metal complexes are gaining increasing interest. We report on reactions of LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Ar)]₂, Ar = Dipp = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃,) with heteroleptic tetrylenes L'ECl (E = Ge, Sn; L' = N(SiMe₃)Ar), yielding the donor-acceptor complex LGa-Sn(Cl)L' (1) or the oxidative addition product L(Cl)GaGeL' (3). The reaction with DMPGeCl (DMP = 2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃, Mes = 2,4,6-Me₃C₆H₂) yielded LGa(μ-Cl)GeDMP (2), which represents an intermediate of the oxidative addition reaction. 1-3 were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy as well as by single crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD), while their electronic nature was analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

Potassium Aluminyl Promoted Carbonylation of Ethene

The potassium aluminyl [K{Al(NON^Dipp)}]₂ ([NON^Dipp]²⁻=[O{SiMe₂NDipp}₂]²⁻, Dipp=2,6‐iPr₂C₆H₃) activates ethene towards carbonylation with CO under mild conditions. An isolated bis‐aluminacyclopropane compound reacted with CO via carbonylation of an Al−C bond, followed by an intramolecular hydrogen shift to form K₂[Al(NON^Dipp)(μ‐CH₂CH=CO‐1κ²C^1,3‐2κO)Al(NON^Dipp)Et]. Restricting the chemistry to a mono‐aluminium system allowed isolation of [Al(NON^Dipp)(CH₂CH₂CO‐κ²C^1,3)]⁻, which undergoes thermal isomerisation to form the [Al(NON^Dipp)(CH₂CH=CHO‐κ²C,O)]⁻ anion. DFT calculations highlight the stabilising influence of incorporated benzene at multiple steps in the reaction pathways.

Geminal C-Cl and Si-Cl bond activation of chloromethanes and chlorosilanes by gallanediyl LGa

The activation of relatively inert E-X σ-bonds by low-valent main group metal complexes is receiving increasing interest. We here confirm the promising potential of gallanediyl LGa (L = HC[C(Me)N(Dip)]₂, Dip = 2,6-i-Pr₂C₆H₃) to activate E-Cl (E = C, Si) σ-bonds of group 14 element compounds. Equimolar reactions of LGa with chloromethanes and chlorosilanes EH_xCl_4-x (E = C, x = 0-2; E = Si, x = 0, 1) occurred with E-Cl bond insertion and formation of gallylmethanes and -silanes L(Cl)GaEH_xCl_3-x (E = C, x = 2 (1), 1 (2), 0 (3); E = Si, x = 1 (4)). In contrast, consecutive insertion into a geminal E-Cl bond was observed with two equivalents of LGa, yielding digallyl complexes [L(Cl)Ga]₂EH_xCl_2-x (E = C, x = 2 (5); E = Si, x = 1 (6), 0 (7)). Compounds 1-7 were characterized by heteronuclear NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ²⁹Si (4, 6)), IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and their solid-state structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (sc-XRD).

A Free Aluminylene with Diverse σ-Donating and Doubly σ/π-Accepting Ligand Features for Transition Metals*

We report herein the synthesis, characterization, and coordination chemistry of a free N-aluminylene, namely a carbazolylaluminylene 2 b. This species is prepared via a reduction reaction of the corresponding carbazolyl aluminium diiodide. The coordination behavior of 2 b towards transition metal centers (W, Cr) is shown to afford a series of novel aluminylene complexes 3-6 with diverse coordination modes. We demonstrate that the tri-active ambiphilic Al center in 2 b can behave as: 1. a σ-donating and doubly π-accepting ligand; 2. a σ-donating, σ-accepting and π-accepting ligand; and 3. a σ-donating and doubly σ-accepting ligand. Additionally, we show ligand exchange at the aluminylene center providing access to the modulation of electronic properties of transition metals without changing the coordinated atoms. Investigations of 2 b with IDippCuCl (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) show an unprecedented aluminylene-alumanyl transformation leading to a rare terminal Cu-alumanyl complex 8. The electronic structures of such complexes and the mechanism of the aluminylene-alumanyl transformation are investigated through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Controlling Al- Interactions in Group 1 Metal Aluminyls ( = Li, Na, and K). Facile Conversion of Dimers to Monomeric and Separated Ion Pairs

The aluminyl compounds [M{Al(NON^Dipp)}]₂ (NON^Dipp = [O(SiMe₂NDipp)₂]^2-, Dipp = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃), which exist as contacted dimeric pairs in both the solution and solid states, have been converted to monomeric ion pairs and separated ion pairs for each of the group 1 metals, M = Li, Na, and K. The monomeric ion pairs contain discrete, highly polarized Al-M bonds between the aluminum and the group 1 metal and have been isolated with monodentate (THF, M = Li and Na) or bidentate (TMEDA, M = Li, Na, and K) ligands at M. The separated ion pairs comprise group 1 cations that are encapsulated by polydentate ligands, rendering the aluminyl anion, [Al(NON^Dipp)]^- "naked". For M = Li, this structure type was isolated as the [Li(TMEDA)₂]⁺ salt directly from a solution of the corresponding contacted dimeric pair in neat TMEDA, while the polydentate [2.2.2]cryptand ligand was used to generate the separated ion pairs for the heavier group 1 metals M = Na and K. This work shows that starting from the corresponding contacted dimeric pairs, the extent of the Al-M interaction in these aluminyl systems can be readily controlled with appropriate chelating reagents.

Alumination of aryl methyl ethers: switching between sp2 and sp3 C-O bond functionalisation with Pd-catalysis

The reaction of [{(ArNCMe)₂CH}Al] (Ar = 2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl) with aryl methyl ethers proceeded with alumination of the sp³ C-O bond. The selectivity of this reaction could be switched by inclusion of a catalyst. In the presence of [Pd(PCy₃)₂], chemoselective sp² C-O bond functionalisation was observed. Kinetic isotope experiments and DFT calculations support a catalytic pathway involving the ligand-assisted oxidative addition of the sp² C-O bond to a Pd-Al intermetallic complex.

Reactions of Iso(thio)cyanates with Dialanes: Cycloaddition, Reductive Coupling, or Cleavage of the C═S or C═O Bond

The dialanes [(dpp-Bian)Al-Al(dpp-Bian)] (1) and [(dpp-dad)Al(THF)-(THF)Al(dpp-dad)] (2) (dpp-Bian = 1,2-[(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)NC]₂C₁₂H₆, dpp-dad = [(2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃)NC(CH₃)]₂) react with some isothiocyanates, isocyanates, and diphenylketene via [2 + 4] cycloaddition of the C═O or C═S bond across the C═C-N-Al fragment to afford complexes [L(X═C-Y)Al-Al(X═C-Y)L] with an intact Al-Al single bond (3, L = dpp-Bian, X = PhN, Y = O; 4, L = dpp-Bian, X = Ph₂C, Y = O; 6, L = dpp-dad, X = BnN, Y = S; 7, L = dpp-dad, X = tBuN, Y = O; 8, L = dpp-dad, X = iPrN, Y = S; and 9, L = dpp-dad, X = CyN, Y = S). A mixed C═N and C═O mode cycloadduct, [(dpp-Bian)(TosN═C-O)Al-Al(TosN-C═O)(dpp-Bian)] 5, was obtained in the reaction of 1 with tosylisocyanate. Heating the solution of 3 resulted in a thermal transformation and a change of the cycloaddition mode from C═O to C═N to give the product [(dpp-Bian)(PhN-C═O)Al(O)Al(PhN-C═O)(dpp-Bian)] 10. The reduction of 7 and 8 with Na yielded the products [Na(THF)_n]₂[(dpp-dad^-H)(X═C-Y)Al]₂ (12, X = iPrN, Y = S, n = 2 and 13, X = tBuN, Y = O, n = 3) in which one of the methyl groups of the backbone of the initial dpp-dad ligand was dehydrogenated. When 2 was reacted with the bulky adamantyl isocyanate AdNCO, the C-C coupling of two substrates occurred to form 14 [(dpp-dad)Al(O═C-NAd)₂Al(dpp-dad)] in which the coupled dianionic oxamide ligand bridged two Al atoms in a μ,η⁴-N,O/N,O mode. Moreover, in the presence of 2.0 equiv of Na metal, precursor 2 reacts with tBuNCS, p-TolylNCS, or Me₃SiNCO, possibly through the reduced Al^I intermediate, to yield the sulfur- or oxygen-bridged dimer [Na(solv)_n]₂[(dpp-dad)Al(μ-E)]₂ (15, E = S, solv = THF, n = 3 and 16, E = O, solv = DME, n = 2) upon C═S or C═O bond cleavage. Dialane 1 reacts with dimethylsulfone to give a Lewis adduct [(dpp-Bian)(Me₂SO₂)Al]₂ (17), which releases dimethylsulfone upon heating. The diamagnetic compounds 3-10 and 12-17 were characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The molecular structures of 3-17 were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Electronic structures of the compounds and possible isomers have been examined by DFT calculations.

A bis(imino)carbazolate pincer ligand stabilized mononuclear gallium(I) compound: synthesis, characterization, and reactivity

The first bis(imino)carbazolate pincer ligand supported mononuclear Ga(I) compound LGa: (3) was synthesized and fully characterized. Oxidation of 3 with elemental selenium afforded the dinuclear Ga(III) compound [LGa(μ-Se)]₂ (4) bearing two bridging Se atoms. Ligand substitution of Cr(CO)₆ with 3 under UV light irradiation afforded the gallylene-chromium complex LGa: → Cr(CO)₅ (5). In addition, the attempted synthesis of the aluminium analogue LAl: through reduction of LAlI₂ (7) only led to isolation of the dinuclear Al(III) compound (LAlI)₂ (8), most probably formed through the C-C coupling of two imino radicals.
